For starters, her name isn’t Smith—but it sounds common enough to hide her real identity. And with a new haircut and some hair dye, no one will recognize her on the other side of the country. Or so she hopes.
Years after running away from home and the memories of her kidnapping, Allie finds her footing again in a small town in Maine. She has a safe roof over her head, freedom, and a job she loves at The Lair—a local bar managed by a stoic, protective ex–Navy SEAL who makes her heart beat faster than it should.
But the internet never forgets, and Allie’s parents made sure her most vulnerable years were broadcasted for millions to see. When her past resurfaces and her true identity is at risk of being discovered, Allie finds that her growing crush on her older boss isn’t her biggest problem after all.

The Lair is a romantic suspense novel that explores the consequences of overexposing children on the internet. Mixed with a slow-burning romance full of tension, it's perfect for readers who enjoy grumpy x sunshine, age gap, and boss x employee romances. It includes spice and profanity. Recommended for mature readers only.
Lisina Coney is a Spanish international bestselling romance author in her twenties.
She’s a lover of slow-burn stories with happy endings and main characters who help readers feel less alone in their journeys.
When she’s not reading or writing, Lisina can be found fighting people over the last French fry, spending too much time on social media (Gen Z habits die hard), and pestering her two very patient cats.
I’m not really sure what to rate this, so I'm not going to. 🤷♀️
For the most part, this book deals heavily with harmful ways child exposure to social media and how it can impact their mental health in the long run. To show how sharing too much personal information can backfire and that there are some people out there who will use it in not-so-great ways.
I’m not sure about the other readers, but I really feel like the romance is just kind of an afterthought in this story. 🤔
This is definitely a slow burn, like super, super slow. Allie (25) and Travis (37) might see each other most of the time as she works for him, but aside from some grunts and one-word answers from Travis, they hardly ever talked unless it was about work. It didn't help that we only get Allie's POV so we have no clue what's going on in Travis's head. She's been working with him for a year, but reading these two made it seem like she was still a newbie and he was just barely tolerating her.
Ngl, I just don't get how she could develop a crush/infatuation on him when he barely acknowledges her and only communicates with grunts and glares.
Apparently, it appears like he cares for her in his own way. I didn't get confirmation on this because again, single POV. But, based on his reactions to her at times and the way he stepped up and protected her when she needed it, I'm going to assume this is his way of showing that he’s not indifferent to her at all.
But like my confusion with Allie's crush, I don't understand what Travis found so appealing in her, especially since he made it his life mission to avoid getting too close to other people. What made her so different? I just really need it to make some sense.
Like I said, these two spent time together more as boss and employee and nothing more. Sure, there were some instances where they got too close but Allie's constant assumption that he probably didn't see her as anything more than an employee is kind of ruining the fun in their interactions. I couldn't blame her, though, because Travis' actions can be pretty confusing if you look at it from Allie's perspective. But of course, as readers, we knew why he acted like that around her.
When her secret came out, she decided to leave to sort things out for herself and what to do with her awful parents. Ngl, this decision, although reasonable, made me lose some interest in the plot. Because what do you mean you have to run away AGAIN? Aren't you getting tired? Because I am. 😭 How can this even be considered romance when the MCs hardly have any romantic interactions? 🫠
I think the romance only started at the 85%. This is the point where they decided to date, only for them to separate for five weeks again at the 89% because Travis needs to go back home and Allie still wasn't sure how to move on with her life and what she wanted to do with Travis. Like, girl, isn't it a bit late to still be uncertain about what you want? 😩
Maybe it's just me, but this author certainly has a knack for creating complex and frustrating characters. So frustrating that I've pulled my hair way more times than I should have.
Honestly, if readers are expecting a romance, they might still find it here, but it might feel somewhat lacking. It really feels more like a bonus feature than a main attraction. I suppose it was fine, but my frustration with Allie really put a damper on my interest in their romance.
But if readers are curious about how sharing children's information online can be harmful in various ways, this will definitely shed some light into that issue. I learned a few things, and it’s been quite an eye-opener. In this aspect, I think the author was able to successfully convey her message, and I appreciate her taking the time to write about it. It was unusual to read something about that topic, but it was really informative to learn how to be cautious when sharing data online and how it can greatly affect us.
Anyway, my issue with this story is why her parents didn't face any consequences for what they put her and her siblings through? They basically got away with their abuse. Other than that, I think this was quite okay, though it may not be intended for a wide audience. But that's just my assumption, and I really hope I'm freaking wrong. I seriously hope this finds its intended readers though. 🤞

I was originally planning to read 'The Brightest Light' series first, but since this is a romantic suspense and I'm a sucker for that genre, I'm going to read this book first.
I don’t know how she does it, but her books keep getting better. She finds the best combination of: - addictive storytelling - loveable, relatable characters - green flag men - open communication - healing from trauma And her books are truly a safe haven for me.
(Speaking of Safe Haven, if you love that Nicolas Sparks movie/book, this is for you.)
This book also touches on the subject of (over-)sharing your children on the internet, and the dangers that might bring. A must-read eye-opener, brought within the package of a romance book that you can’t put down.
I loved these characters and Travis and Allie are EVERYTHING. (Also: what a man!!!!!) 🤍
I love a smitten man, and this big, quiet hero is the kind of steadfast book boyfriend that has me swooning every time. The story is a great mix of slow-burning romance and heroine-focused introspection, with a touch of suspense to keep things interesting. Our heroine has gone through a lot in her life, and the exploration of children on social media was really interesting. But I will openly admit that it was the hero who made the story for me - his unwavering support and tender love was heartwarming, and the romance developed into something very satisfying. I do think there were a couple of things that could’ve been explored further, but I sincerely enjoyed the story from start to finish. A win for me!
The story follows Allie, a woman who has been drifting from place to place for years. Growing up, she was exploited by her parents for fame on social media, and she’s been avoiding attention ever since. But Allie ended up working at a bar in a small town about a year ago, and it’s starting to feel a little bit like home. Sure, her bear of a boss is a mountain of a man, but he’s got a softer side that makes Allie feel safe. So when trouble seems to come to town, it’s Travis that Allie starts to rely on. As the two spend more time together out of work, they form a friendship that sometimes feels like more.
I loved Coney’s debut, so I was excited to dive into this story. It’s a little different than the usual romance, with a focus on Allie and her complicated past. I didn’t mind that we only got her perspective, because it was easy to see how much Travis cared about her. Their relationship takes its time to heat up, but I could feel the connection between them right away. There’s a forbidden element in that Travis is Allie’s older boss, so it made sense that the romance is such a slow burn. We get to see them form a great emotional connection, though I certainly wouldn’t have minded even more development there. The only thing I didn’t love was the final act, but it did make sense for the story. All in all, it was a very solid 4-star read for me, and a fresh, fulfilling love story.
this was one of my most anticipated of the year so i was torn between binging the heck out of this it and just taking my time. but yeah obviously i couldn’t just do that and i think two days was wayyy too much time and i was forcing myself not to pick it up but that didn’t work. now i regret reading it « too fast » what am i supposed to do now ?? if you know me you probably also know my love for Lisina Coney and The Brightest Light trilogy, if you don’t well she’s my favourite author ever and they are my favourite books ever so. and yes i did get a tattoo because of it a couple years ago and im still obsessed with both my little tattoo and the books to this day. so when Lisina announced her new book back in november i was soooo excited ! as her biggest fan (obviously) i was just popping my head everytime she posted something and she gave us soo much in the last few months. i mean yeah guys the promotion of this book was real good ! and even though just her announcing anything got me going crazy all her posts and stories over the past months sold me even more. so yeah this story deals with an « unusual » topic i guess you could say, i for one think she did an amazing job with it ! and i’m so proud of her for all of it knowing the struggles she had with it ! it came out perfectly <3
now i have to say i haven’t read a lot of romantic suspense books so this was kinda new to me but this introduction to it just won me over. i usually just want characters to be happy and in love and even though i love to try new things and read all kind of genres i dont really know why but in my head i somehow always associated romantic suspense to something i wouldn’t be a huge fan of. and i can’t even really explain why… so when she first announced that even though i was literally jumping everywhere i was a tiny bit scared i wouldn’t enjoy as much because of some strange ideas i had in my head but oh boy she delivered!
Allie and Travis are exactly how i thought they’d be, okay who am i kidding, they’re even better. i don’t know how she does it but i swear no one writes love interests like she does ! and i know some amazing book boyfriends but hers ? yeah they never disappoint!!! also getting this book in Allie’s POV only was unexpected because i somehow assumed we’d get both but i actually enjoyed way more than i would have otherwise. it was the perfect choice. the found family in this one was everything like come on !!! i love all these characters so much and im gonna miss them a lot…
don’t get me starting on the age gap guys you know im a sucker for them… and yes this book has it all the feet kicking and giggling and blushing and everything !!!
but yes Lisina Coney raises awareness on a serious topic that isn’t talked about enough and people might not be interested at first for some reasons but it really is worth it !
i recently re-read for the hundredth time The Brightest Light trilogy and fell in love with all the characters all over again ( also if you’ve read The Darkest Corner Of The Heart (book 2) you might notice that Lisina mentioned The Lair there first back in February 2024 !!!) and i loved watching Allie and Travis’ beautiful love grow <333
so it’s no surprise that i rated The Lair by Lisina Coney 5⭐️ ! it really is a beautiful book dealing with a serious topic and has a pure and special love story between two amazing people i really hope you’ll give all a chance !
The one sex scene in the end and the cute epilogue was the most exciting thing out of this entire story. Otherwise this book and couple had no pulse. Super repetitive writing that took itself too seriously. The heroine's parents were just so cartoonishly villain-like that it was distracting and I couldn't take it seriously. Also, please stop using the word "peck" every time your couple kiss. It's weird. They aren't birds.
3.5 stars The only thing that held this story together was the main subject which was - children in social media. This subject means alot to the author, as I've learned from her social media, but the execution was, unfortunately, lacking. Allie was an inconsistent character, I didn't really relate to her as a victim and her relationship with Travis was very strange and unconvincing. They had no chemistry whatsoever. Also, this book had some clichés that really bothered me. And last but not least, what's with calling his arms hairy several times and comparing him to a bear? Is that supposed to be attractive? 🤔
Book shows the horrors of child exposure to family vlogging and social media. h is a victim of this and it leads to her kidnapping by a child trafficking ring at the age of 12 that she later escapes.
[Check the tw(s) before you start]
I loved this book. We are shown her story from her childhood, how she faces her abusive parents that record her entire life to be put out to public which traumatises her for a lifetime. She runs away from home at 19 and six years later settles in a small town working at H's bar.
The hero of this book, i love him. He's grumpy, closed off but also has the biggest heart and he's very protective of her. He shares his own PTSD from being in the army. They were just perfect for each other and their interactions were so good and sweet.
Safety - Very safe. No ow/om drama. H is not a hoe and h is a virgin. Epilogue is 3 years later, married with two babies.

I swear to god Lisina Coney knows exactly How to write MY favorite type of Romance books(and mmcs). Ate this up like I ate my pizza.
Loved the message of this book and I think it's important especially when family vloggers are very, very popular nowadays. I appreciate that the author touched this subject and how the children can't consent to that life.
I'm absolutely in love with this story. It's something new for Lisina, but no less wonderful than her previous books. When Lisina first announced a romantic suspense, I was immediately intrigued.
The topic explored in this book is truly important and often overlooked. Not everyone understands what children go through when their lives are constantly shared online. After reading The Lair, I found myself thinking even more deeply about this issue. I believe it's crucial to raise awareness and talk more about such topics.
I really loved how slowly the relationship between Allie and Travis developed. Even though he seemed grumpy and distant at first, he was always attentive and caring toward Allie. They didn’t realize their feelings were mutual until the very end, which created a lot of tension between them. I couldn’t wait for them to finally take that step romantically.
One of the best parts of this book is that Allie didn’t want to start a relationship until she had worked on her mental health and dealt with her past trauma. She didn’t want anyone to save her—Allie wanted to work through her trauma and only then start building her future.
I adore Lisina’s books, and I’m truly obsessed with this story. If you're a fan of romantic suspense, age gap, and slow-burn romance, I highly recommend reading this one.
Talk about SLOW BUUUUUUUURNNNN... Miss Lisina has done it again. This is how slow burn is done (not for everybody tho, because as much as I, personally love slow burn this was nerve-wracking)
I love Lisina's writing style. It's easy, fun, sweet - sorry - too damn sugary for your own good because the way this woman writes her MMCS?! UGH chefss kiss, makes you melt on the spot and get your standards high as fuck, but at the same time repetitive... the story is going good and then she starts repeating herself, whether it is the dialogue between the mmcs or the girl explains for the hundredth time how big, gruffly, grumpy and closed off her love interest is... that's what the readers might find boring, there is nothing new happening except for Allie swoning (I get it girlie) over her boss, how grumpy he is, the way he is as big as a bear and so on and so on...
But I also love her books because they are different from your typical "manwhore x shy, inexperienced, nerdy, unpopular girl", another thing I love is that here we have a healthier relationship between the main characters from the beginning, there is drama but no toxicity, no cheating and as I said what annoys me the most is that every second book the MAIN thing and for most of the readers the "fun" part is when the MMC is a fucking manwhore who slept with half the population... mmm no thank you.
I came to love it when there is a dual pov in my romances and if the book has only one pov, honestly, I find it kinda boring to read only from the girl's pov, LIKE lemme see how the man is struggling, how much she preoccupies his thoughts, how he is losing his mind over her, when and how - literally and simply give me everything from the moment he started to fall for the fmc.
They are both introverts and closed off so it was a little bit confusing how their relationship started, they didn't talk much, and when they finally understood their feelings, out of nowhere started the drama, she ran away again, and then Travis THE MAN HE IS, went after her, they had dates, THERE IS ONLY ONE CHAPTER SEXY TIME and that's it like I NEEEEDED more, you gave a man dying of thirst a drop of water and then left... consider me dead.
(for those who want only a little smut this one is for you)
🍃 Boss x employee 🍃 Age gap (25-37) 🍃 Grumpy, shy ex-navy SEAL (secretly big cinnamon roll) x Shy sunshine 🍃 Small town 🍃 Exposure to social media, child trafficking, suspense... 🍃 Sloooooow buuuurnn (sexy time at 90%) 🍃 No cheating, no OM/OW drama!! 🍃 Mention of PTSD
"I asked you how you'd felt about changing your last name. Remember? Because I know last names mean nothing to you, but I still wanted to ask you if you'd take mine. You're the best thing that's ever happened to me. If I ask to be yours forever, will you say yes?"
“I want to travel, try new things, do all the things ! used to be scared of before. I want to have the rest of my firsts with you. And one day... one day, I don't want that bedroom in your house to be empty anymore."
"I’ve missed you so much, I felt like I couldn't breathe in my own house because you weren't there. It felt empty, soulless. I hated every second you weren't with me because…”
The Lair is a romantic suspense, the suspense parts following a unique concept I've never read about before. The Lair follows Allie, who was exploited on social media, specifically by her mother when growing up. At 19, she left her parents house and moved multiple times to escape recognition (and info getting back to her mother about her whereabouts) Now she's been living in Maine for a year, finally making roots somewhere. She loves her job and the friends she's made there. Especially her boss, who she's developed a bit of a crush on. But the thing is she's been lying to them. About her past and her true identity. Her perfect world there can't last too long without her past coming and rearing its ugly head.
I really loved Allie & Travis! He was so sweet and honestly a perfect partner for Allie! I had never read a book where a character had been exploited as a child on social media, and I felt Lisina Coney did a wonderful job writing about such a difficult topic that is on the newer side
more summed up version for those who like this version of a review better - romantic suspense - fmc grew up being exploited in social media, with a very toxic mother - boss x employee romance - Slowburn romance - age gap romance
this book... wow. I've said it once and I'll say it a hundred times—Lisina's writing never fails to amaze me. I've loved everything she's written, but this is by far my favourite. is it a much more controversial topic? 100%. but Lisina handled it with such care and wrote Allie's story so beautifully. I'm so glad this book exists, and I think it's one that, whether big or small, every single parent on social media should read. my heart broke for Allie, and it breaks even more knowing what she went through isn't all that far-fetched in today's world. I think this book will open a lot of people's eyes to the harm social media can have on children, and I'm so proud of Lisina for being brave enough to tell it.
if you're hesitating on whether or not to pick this one up when it comes out, this is your sign to do it. whether you've read Lisina's past books or not, and whether you loved them or not, this is one worth reading—I promise you that.
also, Travis could literally step on my neck and I'd say thank you.
If you are a Gen Z Internet addict (like myself lol) YOU NEED TO READ THIS BOOK! Lisina is shining an important light on subject matter that is uncharted territory for our generation: the long term impacts of social media and its usage, more importantly the long term effects this has for the children who are posted online!
This book has challenged me and made me reflect on how I want to handle my children being on the internet. This book is not perfect but it’s needed right now, especially in light of the Shari Franke book release and the Franke case.
Regardless if you like the books, buy into the romance, etc. this book Is an important read for the question it raises about our online space and our engagement with it.
Thank you Lisina for writing on this subject matter! Hoping this gets picked up by a read publisher bc it is needed in bookstores!
Update a little over a week later. I have not stopped thinking about this book it’s not just a wattpad 4.5 it might be an actual 4.5 for me. I keep thinking about the guy in this book & I’ve been replaying multiple difference scenes in my head (not dirty ones get your minds out of the gutter I said in my review nothing happens until the end but like the scene where people are at her door and he gets there in 6 minutes when he lives 13 minutes away like omg not a damsel in distress but a strong woman who has gone through trauma asking for help from someone she trusts for the first time in her life)
vvvv Original Review vvvv
It’s a wattpad 4.5 but maybe like a 3 in terms of comparison to other books (I said in an update that I read this on my phone and it was giving major wattpad vibes) fun factor like a 5 and I could see it making a good movie adaptation
I had a lot of fun reading it and enjoyed the anti-internet/influencer content. You could call it a slow burn because nothing happens until the second to last chapter but they had so much tension the entire time that I still felt like their relationship was moving too fast. Overall a fun little read. I really hope this author/book gets it’s flowers
This is not the blueprint by any means but every family vlogger needs to read a book like this, be scared, and stop filming their children. Sacconejolys I'm looking directly into your eyes.
Anywho, I picked this up because I felt like it and instead of the 1800 books on my TBR, I decided to read the one book I learned existed 2 minutes prior to adding it to my kindle LMAO. I've read Lisina Coney before (which I did not realize until I was halfway through this one) and enjoyed her writing and I'm happy to report I enjoyed this one too.
Allie has run away from her home and family in hopes of protecting herself and leaving her past behind her. After growing up in an influencer family and having all her vulnerabilities aired out for all to see PLUS being kidnapped because of it all, she's done. Somehow this lands her in a small-ish town in Maine, working at a sports bar with her grumpy boss and she decides that this feels like the place to settle - for now, anyway. Her and Travis get along, despite him having a daily word count of 10 words, and she has yet to be fired for the mistakes she can't help but make. When the energies shift and her and Travis get to see a better side of one another, she's wondering if it's time to let people (him) know about who she really is, especially once her safety is threatened again. But how do you tell your boss and new friends that you've been lying about who you are since day one?
Allie deserved better from her childhood and I was so sad for her. Her parents can rot. When she talks about her classmates seeing her first period online? I was going to rage because I know there are influencers out there doing this shit too and kids are nothing if not meaner than they were when I was 10.... yeah, no way.
When her and Travis start upping their conversational abilities with one another I was JUMPING FOR JOY. I love a grumpy, gentle giant and that's exactly what this bear of a man is. I was so excited LMAO. Overall, the two of them were cute as hell and I enjoyed it a lot.
THE REAL STAR OF THE SHOW WAS CHARLIE? He was so kind and encouraging for Allie in the ways she needed it most. Him and Lola (Lisina, did you watch Charlie and Lola growing up or is this a coincidence) pulling Allie out of her shell enough to get her to admit she had friends was exactly the support I needed to see for her. I was so worried he was going to turn out to be a creep and he just absolutely was not that. Very golden retriever energy LMAO.
Reading this author’s other books I was expexting a lot more. The romance felt flat, they went from zero to a 100. All of a sudden he’s calling her sweetheart & she loves him? Hello missgurl what made you love him? Other than him being grumpy 24/7? I also feel like the writing wasn’t as good as her other novels. Sadly, this wasn’t it for me.
This book started out gripping and then lost the pace towards the end, and then I realized that the FMC’s name is the middle name of a certain pop star, and the MMC has the same name as that pop star’s football boyfriend. Once I realized it was about them, it made me super uncomfortable. I think writing fan fiction of literal actual living human beings is disrespectful.
One star because I was fooled it could be like an MZ book, but nope Fmc insufferable, repetitive inner monologues and her whole story, THE WHOLE POINT OF THIS BOOK, wasn't executed well. Mmc was barely there🤔
First of all, this is my first book from this author, and I've got to say, I love this author's writing. It is so easy to read and reminds me of some of my favourite authors. The suspense is not that suspenseful at all, so I don't want to mislead you guys on that part. It is mainly about the danger of exposing young children's lives on social media, which is very concerning nowadays.
Second of all, the slow burn is burning. Gosh, I love when we have this sizzling connection between our two leads. Like, we wanna them to moosh their face in, but intense boiling chemistry kinda made me not want them to smoosh. Just so that I could live in that purgatory of won't they, will they.
As for the plot itself, well, it was meaningful. Not something you would usually read about in a romance book. So, that's a point in itself.
Also, it worried me there. The smut. I thought this book would be a clean book. But nope! You only got one scene, but hey, that one scene saved it. I always want my smut.
All in all, it was a pretty satisfying read. The pacing could be a little better, and some of the aspects of the ending (especially about our girl's family) could be handled more satisfactorily, but other than that, it was pretty great. I wanna read more books from this author too! I feel great things from her.
I'm seriously blown away by this book. It's like Mariana Zapata level slow burn in the BEST WAY! And I will honestly say that the romance wasn't even the main plot in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, it's beautiful and very present, but the way Lisina Coney tackled the hard topic of the dangers of social media and kids being overexposed was honestly so inspiring as a parent and really made me ponder so much more then I already do. This is a MUST READ. It's a fictional story, but based in a lot of truths and possibilities of what could happen. I would recommend to anyone with kids especially. I'm truly in awe of this book. Literally eveything about it is so good! Don't skip out on the authors note, I loved hearing the heart behind why she wrote this book and the struggle behind her decision to publish it
The romance was the least interesting part of this book? The romance didn’t do anything for me and I didn’t feel the chemistry or connection between them.
