Demon Lover

Rate this book
Over a difficult winter, Caitlin Ross has led a simple life preparing for the birth of her first child. Now spring and her due date are imminent, and she's about to find out that for a witch married to a shaman, life never stays simple for long. When she witnesses a chance encounter between her husband and Gordarosa's new dance teacher, Caitlin discovers they once were lovers. Timber swears he wants nothing to do with his old flame. But the dance teacher has magic of her own, and she'll stop at nothing to get Timber back.

When a local girl with a crush on Timber is murdered, the sheriff arrests Caitlin's husband for the crime. Caitlin suspects her rival of framing Timber out of revenge, and sets out to clear his name. In her quest, she uncovers a motive far deeper and more dangerous that simple retribution. To bring Timber home, Caitlin must sacrifice her very being, and make an alliance with a Power as old as Love itself.

She remembers being in the woods one time with two others. Something about this frightened her, so she ran away. When she tripped over a rotten log, a large spider ran across it. She screamed, and the others laughed. Eventually, she made it back to the house.

She believes this happened at the lake house that was sold when she was three, but some have assured her that the house did not look like that and the event never took place.

I just finished my advance copy of Demon Lover. I think I may be allergic to Caitlin Ross novels. It seems that every time I read one, my eyes start to water, I get the sniffles, and I sometimes have trouble catching my breath. Author Katherine Lampe has created both a world, and more importantly, main characters that are so real, so believable, and so lovable that I cannot help but be emotionally invested in the events.

This latest installment is a work of far reaching consequence for both the characters and the series. Timber's past has come back, not just to haunt him, but to swallow him whole, and it is up to Caitlin to find and free him. Sure there are goddesses and gods involved and some nasty bits of magic, not to mention the purely mundane difficulties of dealing with the law when a murder has taken place, but it is the bond between Caitlin and Timber that is at the heart of this work.

There is such beauty and love in Caitlin and Timber's relationship, such amazing balance of passion and pragmatism, such a wonderful partnership. Lampe has created the closest thing to a perfect relationship that I have ever seen in either life or fiction, and Demon Lover goes a long way in demonstrating why it works. Men, take note. If you want to know how to “get it right,” you can't do much better than follow Timber's lead. The stories in Lampe's novels are fantastic, but it is the characterizations that have made me and many others such dedicated fans of the Caitlin Ross adventures.

Once again, Lampe has taken on the task of showing us just how the interaction of gods and humans can play out. This book brilliantly involves the reader in both the way the gods change us and the way we change the gods and just how uncomfortable and frightening it can be for all concerned.

If you haven't gotten around to reading the novella, The Fits of the Season (which I highly recommend), Demon Lover will be the reader's opportunity to view the world from Timber's point of view as the book alternates from Caitlin to Timber. It is a fascinating and enlightening experience to see things from our inimitable Scot's view. Lampe places the reader inside Timber's head. I got the feeling that I was riding just behind his eyes. Never have I felt such an intimate connection with a character.

As always, Lampe's skill and talent with words makes the act of reading an effortless and absorbing pleasure, with gorgeous turns of phrase and captivating imagery. Impeccable writing and master storytelling. Read it!

Katherine Lampe has done it again. Caitlin Ross and Timber MacDuff are back with another adventure, this one hitting a little too close to home. (no spoilers). Ms. Lampe's rich imagery and descriptions of religious and magical rituals keep the reader fully engrossed in this latest installment of the Caitlin Ross series.

Unlike the previous books, Demon Lover shifts character voices between Caitlin and Timber. While readers of the series will recognize Caitlin's voice and emotions, it is the first time we are seeing things from Timber's point-of-view and it does not disappoint. Writing as such two strong characters within the same book and keeping their voices separate and distinct is no easy task, but Katherine accomplishes it with style and believability. I feel as if I know them both a little better now and am grateful for that.

None of the books in the Caitlin Ross series should be missed and Demon Lover is no exception. Congratulations to Katherine Ross on another GOODREAD! Can't wait to see what's next!

This one is a real page-turner.

Katherine Lampe writes something like paranormal fiction but her protagonists aren't vampires or shapeshifters. They and other characters in her books have some personal magic power, and also access power and communicate with supernatural entities use a variety of magic forms and rituals that are common in the Americas and Europe. This lets Katherine get her characters into and out of trouble using everything from Tarot readings to shamanic journeying to charms you can buy off the Internet or make with supplies from your local craft store, which I think is a lot of fun. In this story, for example, a love charm ends up implicating someone as a murder suspect.

The relationship between protagonists Caitlin and Timber (who are married) is a delightful change from the usual antagonistic romantic relationship (or its opposite, the soulmates-until-the-end-of-time-even-though-we-only-met-two-days-ago relationship) in many paranormal romances.

This novel uses elements and gods from African religions, and the antagonist is an African woman. Because people might feel this is cultural appropriation, Katherine includes an afterword explaining her choices and how she researched these subjects. Because of that and because I'm white and they aren't my religious elements or gods, my enjoyment of the story wasn't affected.

The story shifts between Caitlin's and Timber's POVs. They have really distinctive voices. For example, Timber is much more tentative about communicating with himself verbally. I really sense that his relationship to the world is mediated through his body, so that when his body is taken over, he is more lost than some people would be.

A couple of previous books in this series explored Timber's past involving criminal activity and substance abuse. He is in recovery but his past still affects him, especially when he feels powerless or is confronted by authority.

In this story Timber is subject to sexual harrassment and rape. There are other paranormal novels where a male character has a history of being sexually abused, but I haven't often read one where the abuse happens during the story. Sexual harrassment is often used as a plot driver in the paranormal genre in ways that make me uncomfortable: there is a trope (I'm looking at you, Charlaine) where male characters use sexual harrassment against female characters as a form of flirting/power-jockeying with other male characters. I hate that, and I am glad that is NOT what is being done with the sexual harrassment in this book.

I was glad to see Tintri Fionn again, from an earlier book. He's one of my favorite characters.

Demon Lover is the first book I have read in the Caitlin Ross series, but it will not be the last! Magic, drama, romance, intrigue, wit, action, adventure- this story has it all!

Katherine Lampe has a gift for delving deep into the human, and non-human, psyche. Emotions are explored and loyalties are put to the test in this exciting sixth book!

There's also a yummy Scottish accent. Mmm. Tasty.

Seriously, GET. THIS. BOOK.

I received this book as a Goodreads First-reads giveaway.

Though this author is new to me, I wonder why she isn't better known. Though the cover did not incite and the summary wasn't very descriptive, the story was a good read. The back and forth between the two main characters gave a full, well-rounded visualization of the story.

Not only did I find the characters real and easy to read (though my knowledge of Scottish accents made it difficult to figure out at times) the story was a fascinating mix of mystery, music and magic; all in the seemingly normal realms of life. It makes one wonder if someone near us may be a little more magical than they seem.

My only comment would be that this book should have been proof-read by a French speaker prior to being published. Though the short two or three word sentences were for the most part fine, the full sentences were riddled with issues which could have easily been avoided. Luckily, there were only a couple and it did not impact the story whatsoever, it was just a bit disappointing that it happened in the midst of a great scene.

Knowing that there are other books (the main character has her own series!) makes me want to see what else happens in their little town. All in all, I recommend this light and enjoyable read to any fiction readers who want a bit of magic in their lives!
