“Everyone I love will leave me,” Josephine St. Claire whispered to herself.

“Wrong,” an annoying voice said behind her ear. “ I won’t leave you.”

She turned around to behold the unbearably handsome yet immensely irritating face of Theodore Lawrence, Lord Lowry, or ‘Teddy’ to his long-suffering friends.

“You don’t count, Teddy—wait, is your mouth full?”

“Indeed it is,” Teddy replied, with said mouth spitting crumbs of cake. “And, may I ask, why do I not count?”

Josephine sighed. “Because you are my best friend.”

He was wrong; she’d been right. He did leave her. But not before he had ruined everything by kissing her.

Josephine St. Claire prefers to be called ‘Jo’.

Unruly, with more interest in books, writing, and swordfights than in corsets and slippers, she is struggling to find her place in Regency London’s marriage mart. Her one comfort in life, her three sisters and one roguish brother, are slowly slipping away into adulthood, leaving her behind. And she, at nineteen, is horrified by the idea of looming romance and marriage.

At least she still has her best friend, Laurie. Or, as he now likes to be called, ‘Teddy’. She can rely on him not to succumb to any silly romantic ideas.

Theodore Lawrence, Lord Lowry, used to be called ‘Laurie’ when he was a child.

He is not a child any longer. He is about to step into his title and his responsibilities, and leave away the comfort of his early boyhood for good. Orphaned at infancy, he has been blessed with a found the St. Claires. Four sisters and a boy slightly older than him were the ones who saved his life when he was lost and alone. And his friendship with Jo has continued to save him, every day since.

Too bad he is about to utterly wreck it.

Because Laurie has a he has been in love with his best friend for years. And if he doesn’t do something about it soon, he is going to lose his mind.

Laurie is about to propose to Jo.

It is going to be a resounding disaster.

And that, by far, is not the worst thing that’s about to happen.

Rejected is a Jo and Laurie rewriting. This story is not a retelling of the book in its Just of the Jo and Laurie part. We are going to remake their story into a Regency era swoon-fest. And we are going to get it right this time.

Or not.

Bring tissues

……

This short and dark Regency retelling of Jo and Laurie’s story is for everyone who has shipped them so hard, they wished for a better ending. Do you think we might get it with this story?

Rejected is a quick, short read, but don’t let its length fool It’s packed with drama, romance, heat, darkness and light, and it will make you cry and swoon, and then cry again.

This one is for the Jo and Laurie endgame fans.

Welcome to the world of M.C. FRANK's books, where characters aren't going to have an easy time of it: They will find themselves in icy-cold dystopian worlds where kissing is forbidden (among other things), or in green forests ruled by evil Sheriffs. If they're in Jane Austen's England, they have to be running away from a traumatic childhood, or if they are in our contemporary world, they're scared they'll die before they have finished high school. That sort of thing.
Don't worry, though, she knows we all need a little hope and joy in our lives, so there's a good dose of those as well in everything she writes.
M.C. Frank (writer, reader, designer, physicist and teacher, to name a few) has been living in a world of stories ever since she can remember (that's before she knew how to write). She started writing them down when she could no longer stand the characters in her head screaming at her to give them life, and while those first scribblings weren't exactly good (nor were they books, although she insisted on calling them that), they were enough for her to discover her passion in life.
She got her university degree in physics a few years ago (yes, she's like Sheldon, only a bit crazier!) and is now free to pursue her love of reading and writing, as well her free-lance job as editor-in-chief. She lives with her 'dude' in a home filled with candles, laptops and notebooks, where she rearranges her overflowing bookshelves every time she feels stressed.
Which is often, since (as you might have noticed) she doesn't pick the easiest subjects for her novels.

This was absolutely ridiculous 🙄. Jo felt sorry for herself for the entire book and Theodore/Teddy/Laurie was either an emotional 12 year old girl or his balls hadn’t dropped yet.

M C Frank’s books have some eye catching covers and Rejected is no exception.

As Josephine St Claire and her two sisters grow older, her sisters leave the next. Josephine is fine right where she is, but she also knows that her best friend, Theodore Lawrence, will leave her too. She spends a lot of time feeling sorry for herself…and I think she is in denial.

Sometimes what we want is right in front of us, we just aren’t able to see it.

I have been enjoying the Rakes and Ruin series, but Rejected is not one of my favorites. That’s okay, it as still worth the reading to find out more about Josephine and what she wants out of life.

The POVs switch from her writing letters to her deceased sister, Beth, and current events. Sometimes I felt her despair and other times I just wanted to tell her to get over herself. The pages ooze angst, and I guess, if you think of the times, it may be more realistic than I originally thought. At least Josephine was able to live her life the way she wanted, not being forced into a marriage she didn’t want. Love is messy and it takes her the entire book to figure it out. I’m glad Rejected was a quick read, because it lacked the depth of plot that I love so much, yet I was satisfied with the end result.

If you read Little Women and wanted it to be a bit darker and a lot more interesting, you’ll love this inventive take on Jo and Laurie.

On the eve of her sister Meg’s wedding and her other sister Amy’s last night at home before traveling abroad with their Aunt March, (which Jo longed to do herself) lifelong friend and neighbor Laurie professes his deep and abiding love for her, and proposes marriage. A frightened Jo turns him down, accusing him of being unwell and confused.

Through letters to her deceased sister Beth, Jo works through her confusion and grief in turning down the man she’s always had feelings for without ever truly examining those feelings.

The tension between them as well as Jo’s revelations about loss and longing are beautifully written and while there are no explicit intimacies, there’s plenty of passion.

I was generously furnished an advance reader copy from the author, and I’m pleased to share my honest and enthusiastic review.

This is a re-imagining, not a retelling (since this is a non-canonical pairing). The character development arcs are also different from canon, but for all of us that remember the movie adaptations more than the novel I think it is what we wished for. Even though Jo and Laurie are OOC, they and their story (and MC Frank's storytelling) is emotional and compelling.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I've always adored Jo and Laurie's relationship and dynamic, which is why I always need to turn to fanfiction every time I finish a Little Women adaptation. I will forever be bitter at Louisa May Alcott wrenching them apart, periodically making me chase that alternative happy ending to wash out the unpleasant taste of the path she chose for them.

And so, I was very much excited when I discovered Rejected , a full-on book dedicated to providing Jo and Laurie that happily ever after so many of us wished for them.

However, it did not live up to my expectations.

As the description makes clear, this wasn't a retelling of Little Women , but more of a partial re-imagining in a bit of an alternative universe setting (where the Marches were the St. Claires and lived in England instead of the US), fully focused on Jo and Laurie over a much smaller period of time than the original book.

Rejected began at Meg's wedding. With Jo being morose about being left behind now that one sister had married, the other was about to leave for continental Europe with their aunt, and the third had already died. Overwhelmed by her dark thoughts, she escaped to the gardens, only to be chased by Laurie, who'd finally reached his breaking point in keeping his feelings hidden and blurted out a confession and marriage proposal. Which got shot down. The book explored the immediate fallout and the next several months of Jo's despondent musings and her sporadic reunions with Laurie while she came to terms with her own feelings.

But here's the issue: while the premise was fine, the execution was terrible.

This book read like little to no planning went into it, like it was stream of thought and penned down as the words came up, which resulted in tangled progression and messy pacing. I often thought a scene or interaction was over, broken by one of Jo's letters to Beth (which were used as an avenue to provide background info and as a way for Jo to externalize and confront her feelings), only for it to pick right back up. I liked the idea of the letters, but a lot of the time, they absolutely broke the flow of the story. Like during Laurie's first confession. That scene was SO long and broken by SO many letters.

But, honestly, all three of the instances when Laurie and Jo fought about how they felt were too long. They talked in circles, with no logical progression to their conversations or consistent attitude. It was beyond frustrating. One would desperately plead while the other was angry, only to switch roles in the next sentence. And back and forth they went.

There needed to be building blocks to their relationship progression. A clear path with stages to conquer, so they could move onto the next one. A thread where a bursting confession not taken seriously became impossible to wave away. Followed by mounting angst, anger, and desperation until an explosive fight, and then a period of regret and reflection, where realization dawned. I wanted to see them come together step by laborious step. Not stumble their way through a snarl of inconsistent behaviors and repetitive arguments.

So, yeah. I appreciated the effort, but Rejected ended up being more of a chore to get through than anything else.

Oh, my what an angsty second chance Regency romance! If you like Little Women & Jane Austen books (and other romances in this series), you’ll definitely love this one. An awesome next addition to Frank’s Rakes of Ruin series, loved it!

19yo Jo has been best friends with Laurie aka Teddy, Lord Lowry ever since she was 2 and he was 3. At her sister’s nuptial ball, life has a twisty surprise for Jo. And for Laurie. But it all works out in the end.

I loved the darkness Jo kept pouring into the letters to her sister. And yes, grief does, indeed, do dark things to us all. I loved how Laurie — such a cinnamonroll — was her beacon of light, but most of all, I loved Jo’s coming of age story and self-realisations amidst her fears of abandonment. I kept thinking while reading - who guards the guardians? — only other guardians — and that’s what those two were for each other. The tone of the book as well as the filial setting - a family with 3 sisters and 1 brother plus 1 BFF - plus Jo’s writings plus a surprise twist at the end reminded me of Little Women. Can’t wait for the next story in this series!

Recommended for lovers of Jane Austen with added haunting maudlin twists. Those who go out of their way to help everyone else to the point of forgetting themselves or those who find the world weighs down on them might have a difficult time reading this - in which case - skip to the end to the author’s note and read that first, then return to where you paused.

This book had my emotions all over the place... it was soon good! The main characters, Laurie (Lawrence) and Jo (Josephine), had been friends most of their lives, best friends. A major issue for Jo is that her young sister, Beth, died when she was a child and it had a profound impact on her (the entire family really).

This story is the ultimate love story, discovering and being content within yourself. Laurie is striving to grow, while Jo is determined to remain in the past, and it makes for a tumultuous transition for the couple. Feelings are expressed and trampled, pleaded, dismissed, screamed and ignored. The tether between Laurie and Jo strong. Can either be truly whole without the presence of the other? The physical hurdles pale in comparison to the emotional challenges before the young couple. If you enjoy emotionally charged and angst filled stories I strongly recommend Rejected by MC Frank. The writing is superb and the story will hook you, keeping you immersed in their chaos until it finds its conclusion.

I voluntarily reviewed a gift copy of this book. Happy Reading Y'all 📚

This novella is for anyone who read the earlier story with Jo and Laurie and wished it had reached a more satisfying conclusion. Much like the rest of MC Frank's romances, this one is a tearjerker filled with drama and suspense and the deep seated concern that they heroines may not find a happy ending. Jo is a tomboy, which, in regency times, was NOT an admirable trait. She has trouble fitting in as her beloved siblings grow into adulthood and her looming marriage is a distinctly threatening possibility. Laurie, who has always been Jo's best friend, now goes by Teddy and is looking for a marriage for himself. The only problem is...he's in love with his best friend. Chaos, twists, and turns abound, and readers will be glued to the edge of their seats as they wait for the conclusion. Fans of dark romance will definitely enjoy this story!

This is a retelling of the classic Little Women. The story focuses mostly on Jo and Laurie’s relationship. This is one of my favorite stories and I thought the twist on this one was sweet and touching. The author did a wonderful job of describing the scenes and giving the story a unique perspective. Jo is such a wonderful character. I love her grit and determination, her persistence in solving everyone’s troubles but she overlooks her own. If you love the story of Little Women, I think you will enjoy this adaptation, if you’ve never read Little Women, this is a great story. It is a much quicker read and just as charming. I highly recommend! I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

I need to read more of this author's work. This is the first of her books that I have read and I am astounded and moved by the depth of Jo's pain and Laurie's commitment. The author may have intended this to be a mere regency romance, but it feels more like an in-depth slice of the lives of two people dealing with grief and rejection in very different ways. I particularly appreciate Laurie's insight as to how Jo's rejection made him become the man he could be. I need to get my hands on more of this author's work.

I received an ARC from the author and I am voluntarily leaving a review.

🌫🌬Full of emotions

At her sister Margaret's wedding, Josephine St. Claire was sulking.

At 19, she was the youngest.
What would her future hold?
Would she end up alone?...

--------

A story full of diverse and varied emotions that beautifully recounts the tortured relationship between Josephine and Theodore.

Personally, I enjoyed (and felt sorry for) Teddy's character more.
However, Josephine's character won't leave you indifferent!

I don't like the Regency period, but I found the story powerfully emotional.

I recommend it to fans of the genre.

As a girl I loved Little Women, especially Jo and Laurie, and I was rooting for them to be together. But, alas, it didn't happen. So when I found that Rejected was about my favorite Little Women characters, I immediately snatched it. I liked the change in period, of the story taking place in the Regency period and not during the American Civil War, so that Jo has to spend a season in London, in search for a husband. I enjoyed the romance between Jo and Laurie. It was so intense and stormy, that it kept me on the edge of my seat.

I was excited to read this when I saw that it was a better ending in my opinion for Jo and Laurie from Little Women; always hated how that whole scenario ended in the original. These two are still pains in the booty though! So much miscommunication, angst, withholding, and needing to grow between these two. I did get annoyed at times, but I appreciate the connection these two have. Overall, enjoyed the read! This author does a good job at tugging at the heart strings!

I really enjoyed this as a Little Women retelling, it had that feel that worked in this dark romance novel. M.C. Frank is always able to create a strong storyline and that the characters had that spirit of the original and as something unique, I thought the storyline worked well and had that element that I wanted from this type of book.

I adored this story. Jo and Laurie’s friendship-turned-love had me smiling, sighing, and aching all at once. Their banter was golden, the longing was so real, and the emotional payoff was everything I hoped for. A beautifully written reminder that sometimes love grows quietly, right beside you, all along.

It is a little like “Little Women”. The heroine is feeling left out as her siblings start getting married and traveling. The hero was practically raised with the heroine’s family and has been in love with the heroine since the beginning. He proposes and is rejected. Will they come together in the end? I enjoyed the reading

This retelling of Jo and Laurie is certainly filled with angst. I felt their ending in Little Women was very believable, but a little disappointing. This ending is more to my liking. But the getting there was so upsetting and heartbreaking. I even got angry with Jo.

I was gifted this book from the author and I appreciate this work.

I loved the references even after the departure from the original. It took character growth to get there, but this ended up the story I needed after experiencing "Little Women." It was also interesting to have everything set within London society/the English countryside, & I feel that added an additional layer to the retelling. Now, I'm curious about the other stories in this series.

This was everything I expected and so much more. It is so reminiscent of Louisa May Alcott’s style, has the same chaotic yet heartfelt emotion and heartwarming family dynamics. I loved getting more of the Jo I wanted. This truly is the ending I wanted for Jo and Laurie and I’m so glad it’s now out in the world for other diehard romantic dreamers like myself.

This is a quick read but is jam packed with emotion. You could really feel what the characters were feeling. The pace was fluid and pulled you in right away. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I also loved how everything was neatly wrapped up in the end but still left open enough to continue the story with the other characters, should the author choose to do so.

There is no character development as to why Laurie loves her so much. So it’s just kind of weird that he keeps “fainting” for her love and she just keeps saying no.
