i love the donghua already, but i couldn’t get through the writing translation in the novel form. i 100% prefer this comic version so far & the art is so pretty.
"If you don't know what to live for, then live for me."
I really enjoyed reading this volume as a donghua comic. The story pulled me in right away and kept me engaged the whole time. I love how Xie Lian feels both gentle and strong. He’s compassionate in ways that feel genuine, not exaggerated, and there’s a quiet resilience to him that made me care about what he was going through. Hua Cheng’s presence adds this steady tension that lingers in the background, and I found myself paying attention to every interaction between them. The side characters add personality and energy, and the world feels rich without being overwhelming. It gave me that mix of mystery, emotion, and atmosphere that makes me want to keep reading.
The book itself is beautiful. The cover design and dust jacket are simple but aesthetically pleasing, and it looks great displayed on my shelf. I’m genuinely happy with the overall physical quality. The only real issue for me is that some of the darker panels look pixelated and a little blurry. In certain scenes, especially the low light ones, it almost feels like I’m looking at screenshots from a 720p video. It’s noticeable, and I do wish the images were sharper, but it didn’t stop me from enjoying the experience.
I know there’s been debate about labeling. A lot of TGCF fans call this a donghua comic, and that’s what I call it too. I understand why it’s labeled as manhua, though I can see how that might confuse new fans trying to buy the manhua. This edition uses panels from the donghua and has “manhua” printed on the front, while the version with STARember’s art is labeled “the comic,” even though that’s the actual manhua. That mix-up can definitely cause confusion. I’m rating this purely as a donghua comic and not comparing it to the actual manhua for fairness. For what it is, I truly enjoyed it, and I’m happy to have it in my collection.
I almost feel bad rating this comic adaptation so poorly (the original source material is a 5-star favourite of mine!), but reading this was honestly a chore. The pages are filled exclusively with stills from the anime, and as a result, everything is VERY dark; to the point you almost wish you were reading it as a webcomic on your phone so you could turn up the brightness. Moreover, the panels they’ve chosen from the anime aren’t always very clear, so the action is blurred, the finer details in the forest are lost, and most of the characters look really similar. All in all, despite the gorgeous packaging (the metallic printed edges, the stamped hard case, etc.), I just don’t think this is worth collecting unless you’ve set out to own every edition of this series there is.
Why are so many manga and Korean dramas focused on making men look like women. Also why are do so many of these uber femme men look the same? I could honestly not tell who the main character was except by his white/grey robes. Also they have that plastic surgery chin-face so it's fake as. The women also look like the men but they're wearing lipstick and have different hairstyles. Other than that they may as be called A, B, C and J, because giving all these identical characters names is confusing.
The plot? What plot? Brides are being kidnapped and murdered. Character A, who is a hero and has ascended to heaven after being kicked out of the place twice already, goes on the hunt for the Ghost Killer. He is accompanied by B and C, who wear red robes and are therefore able to be distinguished from A, but not from each other.
There's lots of dark dark dark drawings that might be accomplished, but I couldn't work out what was happening in them. Black, red, a bit of white - maybe this is aesthetically pleasing, but it's fu$king hard to read or enjoy.
Finally I got to the end to find that the Ghost Killer had been vanquished, it was all about a messy love affair, and A, B and C were all off to do something else in the next book. HO HUM, what a pain in the arse this book was.
PLEASE, all artists in China, Korea, Japan, etc, Stop with the men who look like women. It's ridiculous.
Like????? Why?!
It's pretty, but that's about all it has going for it. I read this not knowing it was originally a novel, and not having watched the show; that was a mistake. I don't understand half of what was going on, both story-wise and in the action sequences. Who is that Wen woman? Who or what destroyed the Prince's city/people? Why did the destruction result in the Prince being demoted? Why is the Prince so disrespected? Why does that martial guard/assistant keep hitting trees? I'm so confused!
Then there's the art. I settled in for my nighttime reading with just my table lamp on, as is usual. Eventually I ended up sitting at an angle with the book shoved right under my lamp, because the art panels were so dark that I couldn't make them out! Ridiculous.
If you're not already familiar with and enjoy the source material, stay away from these books.

The show is 5 stars. I’m completely obsessed with the characters, the story, and the print books (chapter book versions). I’m only giving this version 4 stars because I didn’t realise (it was shrink-wrapped) it was just going to be kind of blurry stills from the show with speech bubbles. The gold edges are very pretty but for the price tag it’s not worth it unless you’re basically just collecting everything TGCF.
The introduction of Hua Cheng is always so badass!
This took me way WAY longer than I thought it would. I didn’t think it’d be just literal screengrabs from the donghua, but what the hell sure. I also broke and splurged on getting the beautiful box set with all the cute extras. I wanted to read the 6 volumes as a cute little cozy and easy read for end-of-year/holiday times, but honestly I think it takes more willpower for me to power through this than reading an actual book or regular manga.
a gorgeous art style and an interesting plot. it's a book that makes me want to run to barnes and Noble just to grab the next volume and continue immediately. can't wait to see what happens next!
