Seekers was adapted for TV in 1993 featuring Brenda Fricker as Stella Hazard, and Josette Simon as Susie Hazard.
Lynda La Plante, CBE (born Lynda Titchmarsh) is a British author, screenwriter, and erstwhile actress (her performances in Rentaghost and other programmes were under her stage name of Lynda Marchal), best known for writing the Prime Suspect television crime series.
Her first TV series as a scriptwriter was the six part robbery series Widows, in 1983, in which the widows of four armed robbers carry out a heist planned by their deceased husbands.
In 1991 ITV released Prime Suspect which has now run to seven series and stars Helen Mirren as DCI Jane Tennison. (In the United States Prime Suspect airs on PBS as part of the anthology program Mystery!) In 1993 La Plante won an Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America for her work on the series. In 1992 she wrote at TV movie called Seekers, starring Brenda Fricker and Josette Simon, produced by Sarah Lawson.
She formed her own television production company, La Plante Productions, in 1994 and as La Plante Productions she wrote and produced the sequel to Widows, the equally gutsy She's Out (ITV, 1995). The name "La Plante" comes from her marriage to writer Richard La Plante, author of the book Mantis and Hog Fever. La Plante divorced Lynda in the early 1990s.
Her output continued with The Governor (ITV 1995-96), a series focusing on the female governor of a high security prison, and was followed by a string of ratings pulling miniseries: the psycho killer nightmare events of Trial & Retribution (ITV 1997-), the widows' revenge of the murders of their husbands & children Bella Mafia (1997) (starring Vanessa Redgrave), the undercover police unit operations of Supply and Demand (ITV 1998), videogame/internet murder mystery Killer Net (Channel 4 1998) and the female criminal profiler cases of Mind Games (ITV 2001).
Two additions to the Trial and Retribution miniseries were broadcast during 2006.
This review is just to help me remember key points about the book. If you find it helpful or relatable that's cool too. ︵‿︵‿︵‿︵‿︵‿︵‿︵‿︵︵‿︵‿︵‿︵‿︵‿︵‿︵‿︵
"Mike is keeping more secrets than just his infidelity."
4 Stars ⭐️
This book was a hidden gem and a fast paced weekend read. I liked Stella the most as the jaded wife of an unfaithful man she is a bit of a wild card which keeps it interesting. For a book that's over 20 years old it has aged well considering part of the story is focused on computers and viruses on small round disks. The ending felt quite tense and I was genuinely unsure what way the story was going to go.

Stella and Susie are worried when they haven’t heard from their husbands for more than a week, but they are absolutely horrified when they meet at his office to find they both married to the same man—Susie is even pregnant. Mike Hazard isn’t the man he claims to be, an unfairly dismissed cop making an honest living as a private investigator. Instead he’s mixed up with some very dangerous people eager to get their hands on the disc Mike has hidden, and they don’t mind which wife or baby they hurt to get answers. Stella and Susie form an uneasy alliance of investigation and childcare to get to the bottom of things.
This historical novel formed the basis of a 1993 screenplay by Lynda la Plante, but the action and suspense is as fresh as ever—the baddies were quite menacing. The scene where an overbearing Stella and a forthright Susie each learn about the other’s marriage is priceless. I loved how their combative relationship slowly evolved, being increasingly underpinned by their solidarity of both being wronged by Mike. As usual, Lynda la Plante’s dialogue and characterisations just draw your attention from the first moments. Balancing the scales of justice at the end felt a little rushed but not badly. I would love more books involving Stella and Susie! 🎧 UK actor Helen Keeley’s accents, emotion, and pacing were excellent on the audio.
Meet Susie and Stella Hazard, two women who are married to the same guy, Mike. Mike was a cop, but that all went south when he was accused (and found guilty) of corruption.
Anyway. My man Mike here goes missing. The women find out they're married to the same guy, they become friends, Susie has a baby but turns out to be the most atrocious mother ever, and they catch Mike in the end, where we are left on a cliffhanger.
The blurb made this sound like it was going to be a dark and twisted thrill. In reality, it was 6 hours of Susie and Stella bitching at each other about Mike, about the PI Business, about the baby, about money, you get the gist.
I enjoyed the British set-up for this book, but it fell extraordinarily flat in its focus on the women's relationship, rather than the mystery and betrayal at hand.
2.5/5. Wasn't the worst, I enjoyed some of it, but I'm not recommending.
Audio version of this book was pretty good. The books plot had you roped in from the first couple of chapters. The characters that got introduced throughout the book, they were all really good and kept the books plot going. I really did enjoy this one, can't wait to read more from this author in the future.
I thought this was a new book as the audio copy was released April 2024 but then realised it was an earlier book made into a TV series. A little dated now.
Product Description As a TV drama, this book brings together Josette Simon and Brenda Fricker as two detectives who set up their own agency. The author won a BAFTA Award for her TV drama "Prime Suspect".
