Ashes #14

Courage in the Ashes

Rate this book
The Last Frontier Civilization as we know it was shattered by the nuclear nightmare of the Great War. But out of the smoldering wreckage, Ben Raines has emerged as the courageous leader of a Rebel Army that will fight not only for its own survival, but to help rebuild a country out of the rubble that was once America. Ben's dream of a nation freed from the deadly grip of outlaw gangs and armies of terrorists is close to becoming a reality. Most of the forces of lust and murder that chose to remain in the lower forty-eight have been wiped out. Those warlords, thugs, and punks who survived the purge have taken their gangs north to the untamed wilderness of Alaska for one last showdown with America's famed soldier and survival expert. Raines and his rebel soldiers follow in close pursuit-until a sniper's bullet crashes into Ben's chest. Knowing this may be their only chance, the outlaw armies prepare to make one final all-out counter-attack on the forces of freedom, whose leader now lies near death...as the future of a free America suddenly hangs in the balance!

All of the Ashes series books by William W. Johnstone were exciting and well written (I’ve completed 14 of the 32 stories). I am always fascinated how creative and innovative Ben Raines is in overcoming his enemy. In the Survival in the Ashes and the Courage in the Ashes, Ben starts to go beyond the “Take no Prisoners” attitude when dealing with the cannibalistic Night People called Believers and the scum, criminal street punk perverts of society. In these two stories he starts to show some compassion by offering his opponents an opportunity to surrender. Many refuse and continue fighting against the inevitability of death from Ben’s Rebel Army, but some accept. Examples of changing biker attitudes is in Courage in the Ashes where groups of bikers accept Ben’s offer and become an important part of Ben Raines Rebel Army. Maybe Ben is getting soft in his old age. On to the next story in the series to find out what happens to Ben and his Rebel Army in Europe in Terror in the Ashes.

Wow! And Now, Europe!

The Rebels have "fixed" things in America, so now we've sailed to Ireland to help free the people there. This has been a transition novel, from the fighting to save us, our USA, from the clutches of evil, to moving on to saving Europe . The Rebels face more challenges there, but will be doing so with an experienced fighting group, more equipment, and high spirits.

A lot of old troubles are settled one way or another in this book. The Northstar Campaign finally takes place, and then Ben and company end up in Galway County, Ireland. This marks the first overseas campaign of the Out of the Ashes series.

Great

After 14 books in a series of over 30, I can't believe how engrossed I am this far in. I still recommend that you read this novel.

Very good adventure series. Basically the forming of a new United States after WW3 and the story of the man who leads and forms it. If you like men's adventure stories you will enjoy it. Recommended
