The Unforgetting: A Psychological Thriller

Rate this book
Ten years ago, Reagan’s friend died in a tragic accident.
But what if it wasn’t an accident?

The morning after a wild college graduation party, we found Lanie Martin at the bottom of a ravine—dead from a terrible fall and a snapped neck. We told the police it was an accident. What else could we say?

We panicked. We were wasted the night before. So before the cops arrived, we cleaned up the scene and got our stories straight. Ella swore me to silence about what I saw. Said there was nothing to it. And maybe there wasn’t...but I’ve never been sure.

Now, ten years later, I’m a new mom battling crushing postpartum depression—and the memories I buried are starting to resurface. Flashbacks. Fractured images. Fear and dread.

Then the invitation a ten-year reunion at Ella’s family camp in the Adirondacks. A weekend of remembrance and healing. But something tells me this isn’t about healing.

This is about secrets. And someone wants them to stay buried.

What really happened that night at the cabin? What did I see—and why did I forget?

I came for closure. I came to remember. But if I uncover the truth, I might not leave here alive.

Some buried secrets are better left unearthed.

“The Unforgetting” by Bonnie Traymore completely sucked me in from the very first page. The suspense had me hooked right away, and the pacing kept me turning pages without a second thought. I loved the character development—each person felt so complex and real, which made the emotional stakes feel even higher. The mix of mystery and thrills kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. I couldn’t put it down, and I’d definitely recommend it to anyone who loves a good psychological thriller.

This book grabbed me immediately from the prologue, and it only got better from there. I could not put it down and read it all the way through.

Reagan is a new mother struggling with post partum depression, and adjusting to married life with an infant. Awful memories come flooding back from her past when she opens an invitation from an old friend, Ella, for a weekend getaway for their 10 year college reunion. This is also the 10 year anniversary of the tragic death of their friend Lanie, that occurred at this same camp.

As the weekend approaches, Reagan can’t help but remember snippets of that night: the drugs, the alcohol, a mishap with the fire, how many people were there, a biker guy, the scream… what’s real and what’s subconscious guilt? What actually happened that landed their friend Lanie at the bottom of that ravine?

Once the old gang gets back together at the cabin, the second hand awkwardness due to the tension building is palpable. Reagan, Ella, Ted, Brady, & Josh are all back together. Ella’s parents, Helen and Rob, even show up for the memorial. As the weekend wears on, a hurricane makes its way inland trapping everyone there so nobody can leave after the memorial service, and everything starts to unravel as Reagan begins putting the broken fragments of her memories back together.

Everyone begins to turn on each other… where does Reagan’s husband Matt fit into the equation? The pebbling of clues throughout the book kept me turning the pages anxious to find out what happened next. Highly recommend!

I read this book as an ARC thanks to NetGalley. All opinions are my own and given voluntarily.

In the throes of postpartum depression, new mother Reagan is desperate to get better. She has an adorable four-month-old son Danny, and a doting husband Matt, who she probably doesn’t deserve. But she needs to prove to Matt (and herself) that she can snap out of it. The only problem is that the birth of Danny has reignited her memory of that horrific night ten years ago. She’s been struck with little snippets of the night her college friend Lanie had a fatal accident. But was it really an accident? Between the combination of drugs and booze in her system, Reagan’s memory is foggy. She only remembers snippets.

The boozy party in the Adirondacks. The bonfire. The scream— and Lanie dead.

As the old friends gather for a weekend of remembering, Reagan wonders if it is a week of trying to get her to forget. One of the friends knows something, and she suddenly feels like her life might be in jeopardy.

“The Unforgetting” by Bonnie Traymore is a chilling psychological thriller that is set against the stunning backdrop of the High Peaks. Twisty paths, high elevation, and the threat of a severe storm add another layer of allure as the friends gather in a rustic cabin for the weekend, Secret alliances and hushed conversations spark Reagan’s curiosity as she quickly realizes that she needs to be very careful how she proceeds if she wants to survive the weekend. The author has done an excellent job of spreading breadcrumbs of information, allowing the reader, alongside Reagan, to piece together some sinister information.

Traymore’s greatest strength in writing this novel is her flawless character development—particularly when creating Reagan—which will resonate with many. In the beginning, Reagan seems unhinged and almost pitiful. You wonder how reliable she is and if she’ll ever get it together. Reagan is in a vulnerable position as a new mother struggling with mental health issues, which makes her easy to manipulate. Imagine trying to make sense of your foggy memory, only to experience relentless gaslighting by those around you, shaking your confidence and thwarting any attempts to recover the truth. Reagan’s character is a prime example of how others can take advantage of fragility and use it to their advantage. Still, relying on her intuition and propelled by a strong sense of justice, readers experience Reagan’s cheer-worthy evolution.

Looking for a twisty, spine-tingling thriller? Look no further. “The Unforgetting” by Bonnie Traymore checks all the boxes. Shocking revelations that you won’t see coming, robust character development, and a beautiful, albeit haunting, setting. It’s all here waiting for you to discover!

★★★

”Secrets are dangerous, and they never die. They live on, as long as the people who harbor them. And sometimes even longer than that.”

A college graduation party in the Adirondack Mountains ends in tragedy when one of the graduates is found dead. Ten years later, the remaining friends reunite at the place that changed their lives forever.

Told from two POVs—Ella’s and Reagan’s—we quickly realize that not everything is as it seems. Lanie, the girl whose life was cut short at the party, had plenty of secrets, some worth killing for. Ella, whose wealthy family hosted the ill-fated party, appears to have moved on. She’s successful in her family’s real estate business, married, and a mother of two. Then and now, she has a lot to lose—and it seems she may have omitted a few key details when she gave her police interview. Reagan, on the other hand, overindulged that night and only remembers fragments. She struggled in the aftermath and now suffers from postpartum depression. Her pregnancy and hormonal changes seem to have triggered buried memories, and she is determined to uncover what really happened to Lanie.

History begins to repeat itself when another member of the group disappears in the midst of a storm and is later found dead. Could the killer be one of them?

I love a good locked-room mystery, and the setting was perfect. The mystery itself was well-executed, but I struggled to connect with the characters. Reagan was clearly grappling with her new role as a mother while still haunted by her friend's death. She often seemed to be putting on a facade, making it difficult to truly understand or empathize with her. Similarly, although we hear directly from Ella, her narration felt distant—almost as if we were experiencing her story secondhand. Perhaps this was intentional, but to me, the characters could have been developed more deeply.

I did enjoy the epilogue—it left the reader with a lingering sense of uncertainty and tension, proving that not all stories tie up neatly.

Thanks to Netgalley and Pathways Publishing for the Arc

Reagan is struggling with postpartum depression. A few weeks ago, she had what she calls an “incident,” where she mixed stuff she shouldn’t have and nearly died. While she has a strong support system in her mom and husband, her fragile mental state makes her incredibly vulnerable. Her struggles, however, are nothing new—she’s always been prone to mental illness (though she refuses to use that term). As a college student, she used alcohol and drugs to drown her anxiety. Ten years ago, one of her friends died in what was ruled an accident. Since Reagan was, in her words, “high as a kite,” she doesn’t remember much of that night, but she knows she saw things. When her friend Ella invites her to commemorate their old friend’s death with the surviving members of the group, Reagan says yes.

The gathering is a typical case of “why are these people even friends to begin with?”—because honestly, they aren’t good friends to each other. And it’s not a “we’ve changed too much over the years” thing; they were already pretty terrible friends even ten years ago. I really enjoyed getting inside the minds of Ella and Reagan, one of them afraid the truth will come out, while the other battles with her mind, trying to find out what’s true and what’s not. As is often the case in thrillers written by women, the men are awful (I swear, some authors must use these books as therapy! 😅), and I do wish we’d learned more about Matt, Reagan’s husband.

I can’t give away the ending because it would spoil things, but the resolution is both satisfying and frustrating—because yes, it *can* be both.

Bonnie Traymore delivers a gripping and atmospheric mystery in The Unforgetting, a novel that masterfully blends past trauma with present-day suspense. With a premise centered around a group of childhood friends returning to the site of a haunting death, this story is filled with tension, secrets, and an unforgettable twist that will leave readers stunned.

One of the novel’s greatest strengths is its structure—following characters as both kids and adults, weaving past and present together seamlessly. This dual-timeline approach heightens the suspense, allowing the reader to slowly uncover the buried truths alongside the characters. The eerie nostalgia of returning to a place tied to tragedy adds an extra layer of psychological depth, making the mystery all the more compelling.

As the reunion-like weekend unfolds, tensions rise, and old wounds resurface, leading to shocking revelations and a web of deceit that no one saw coming. Traymore keeps the pacing tight, balancing character development with well-timed twists that keep readers engaged until the very last page.

For fans of mysteries that mix psychological suspense with reunion-gone-wrong scenarios, The Unforgetting is a must-read. It offers everything from dark secrets to unexpected betrayals, ensuring that the story lingers in the reader’s mind long after the final chapter. Bonnie Traymore has crafted a compelling, twist-filled thriller that is both chilling and utterly unputdownable.

Reagan is invited back to her friend Ella’s cabin a decade after their big blowout party that ended with the death of their best friend, Lanie. Ella’s asked their whole gang to return for a small memorial for Lanie and so everyone can catch up. Most of that night was a blur for Reagan, who was drunk and high and only remembers bits and pieces ever since. But more has started to come back for her since giving birth to her son and she feels that returning to the cabin may help her remember what happened and quelch any lingering suspicions. Because she thinks there was more to Lanie’s death than an accidental fall. But the question is, will she be able to handle the truth of what happened that night?

The narrative is from the point of view of both Reagan and Ella, although there’s not too much revealed to the reader that Reagan isn’t aware of. Just vague snippets of dialogue from Ella to others that make you suspicious of her intentions and how much she knows. Reagan is the typical unreliable narrator due to her state of mind that night and how she constantly doubts herself about whether she really saw that, heard that, etc. It gets a bit repetitive. Plus, she suffered from postpartum depression, and everyone treats her like she has serious mental issues that make her unreliable. You’d think she had schizophrenia rather than anxiety and depression. The characters never really apologize for their treatment of her mental health, either. It's not a big surprise, they are all liars and terrible people anyway.

Some of the twists are good but you may see them coming. And there’s a big unanswered question which isn’t terrible, but was just odd, like the author couldn’t decide how to resolve it. But the story flowed easily and kept me interested and engaged. Based on this book, I’d read more by this author.

Reagan’s memory of the night her friend died 10 years ago is spotty, tainted by alcohol and drugs. Ever since her son was born a few months ago, she’s been out of sorts and remembering little flashes. Just enough that she knows she knew something more happened that night, but nothing cohesive. When a 10 year anniversary memorial is organized, she goes because she feels like this will help her regain her memory. She gets far more than she bargained for…

A solid thriller. Compelling storytelling and interesting characters. Parts of it were a bit predictable, but there were enough twists to keep it engaging. Full four stars and a strong recommendation for thriller lovers.

The Unforgetting by Bonnie Traymore is a gripping thriller that explores secrets, guilt and memory. This story also discusses postpartum depression, so if that is triggering to anyone, be aware.
After a wild party at a cabin in the Adirondacks Lanie Martin is discovered at the bottom of a ravine, her neck broken from what looks like a fall. Before the core group of friends call the police, Ella convinces Reagan to not say anything about what she may have seen to the cops. With their stories coordinated Ella and Reagan clean up the evidence of the party and the police deemed the death an accident. Now years later Reagan is struggling with postpartum depression and fragments of that harrowing night are coming to the service. When Ella invites her and the others to a 10-year reunion at the cabin, will Reagan's memories reveal what truly happened at night?
This story was a great read. Perfectly balanced with tension and deceit, I was hooked early on. I liked the dual POV between Ella and Reagan and how it shows that perceptions can change depending on the circumstance.

The Unforgetting is an absolutely all consuming, addictive and highly bingeable psychological thriller. Right from the prologue I was hooked and it only got better from there. It was straight to the point, no fluff type of thriller and I just love those. The atmosphere in this thriller was tense, palpable with a constant building suspense. The past and present tenses made for an engaging read that kept me flipping the pages way past my bedtime. I absolutely needed to know !!!!

One of the highlights in this book is the character development, especially with Reagan. The author makes you doubt her reliability, is she or isn't she reliable? All the characters become untrustworthy at some point. There are some shocking twists while others were a little more obvious, for me it didn't hinder my enjoyment. My only thing is I felt the ending was missing just a little more resolution regarding something, but apart from that it was a solid read!

Overall, this was an absolutely unputdownable, fun and suspenseful ride which I thoroughly enjoyed. I will definitely be on the lookout for more from this author.

Another great book my Ms. Traymore! She brings a fantastic psychological thriller that kept me glued to the pages from start to finish as she has Reagan realizing at the class reunion that events were not as she thought at her graduation party. The author throws enough twists into the story and had me guessing right to the end. She moves the story fluidly with her descriptive scenes and delivers a terrific read.

Excellent!

It has been a long time since I found a plot that kept me in suspense until the end, especially that very ending that blew my mind and moved me with the various reflections it proposes on complex issues and finally with characters that are very difficult to forget for their touching stories.

The story is a psychological thriller that explores memory, the past, guilt, psychiatric disorders and mystery from every angle! It also explores some complex themes such as friendship and trauma.

If you are looking for a book that will play with your mind, that won't let you get out of your chair and that will leave you shocked then, this is the book you should read.

The morning after a raging college graduation party, we found Lanie Martin lying at the bottom of a ravine, her neck snapped in a fatal fall. And I’m not proud of what came next.
Before we called the police, we covered ourselves. Cleaned up from the blow-out at Ella’s cabin in the Adirondacks the night before. Got our stories straight.
Ella begged me not to tell the police what I saw. She insisted that it was an accident—and we all went along. What did I know? I was plastered that night, and large chunks of that evening are missing for me.
But now, in my postpartum state, memories are starting to return, and I can’t help but feel that they might be connected to the soul crushing depression I’ve been experiencing. Is it guilt? Or do I know more than I think I do?

Reunion in at a cabin while experiencing PPD-sure, I'll go! This novel is a slow burn and often has you questioning if Elle is an unreliable narrator, in a dream, or just plain crazy-read to find out! “The Unforgetting” by Bonnie Traymore completely sucked me in from the very first page and I finished it in a day. She is a newer author to me and while I found some chapters a little unbelievable, it was a fun book that kept me engaged until the end.

Bonnie Traymore has a unique writing style that I really enjoy. This is my second book of hers and enjoyed it very much. I look forward to more of her books. In this gripping psychological thriller, Reagan comes to terms with what happened to her friend Lanie 10 years ago.
She’s slowly starting to piece together the bits & pieces from that time & in so doing, puts herself in danger. Will justice finally prevail or will Reagan be the next victim of a suspicious death in order for a killer to keep her silent? “The Unforgetting” is suspenseful & engaging with a plot that keeps you guessing until the very end.

A solid and atmospheric thriller involving a young mother returning to the place that haunts her lost memories. She’s invited to a memorial of her late friend Lanie, at the same remote cabin where tragedy struck ten years ago. Her intoxication that tragic night was speckled with chilling glimpses of truth to Lanie’s demise, but mostly a hazy and unreliable blur that made her friends ridicule or shame her.

The beginning and middle felt a bit superficial, with lots of fluff that could use an edit. The last third picked up in suspense, twists, depth of characters and writing. There were some challenges in distinguishing characters with heavy “he said/she said” hypothetical gossip. I would have loved to have seen edits in this type of dialogue and increases in actual observations. The ending left me confused without a clear answer.

It’s a 3.5 stars rounded up, as it feels rusty but has promise. I would read more from this author.

I loved following along with the journey of remembering in this thriller. When I think back to the story I can picture it vividly in my head - the woods, the cabin, and the ravine where Lanie was found dead. The book has lots of tension and develops as Reagan meets with her old college friends and starts remembering the lost details of that fateful night.

I highly recommend this book, if you are looking for a book full of suspense and intrigue, this book is for you. I love books that have an entertaining plot like this one, those that are difficult to stop reading and this one has it completely; it immerses you in this story of a supposed accident and how after 10 years it continues to haunt the protagonist. Incredible narrative of the author, it manages to connect and above all embarks you on this story with an incredible ending. I love how the protagonist faces the whole situation and how it develops as the years go by, it is very interesting and adds a lot to the plot.

The Unforgetting was, unfortunately, very forgettable for me. It was a super quick and easy read, and felt very much like a YA book. Though the characters are adults, the way they behave seemed juvenile. Would not recommend as an adult thriller, perhaps as a YA one.

Ms. Traymore writes interesting and intriguing stories that are hard to put down. There is always more to her stories with immersing twists. Source: BookSprout.

THE UNFORGETTING - Probably one of Ms. Traymore's better written books, although it needs better editing, too much repetition. Interesting. Intriguing. Plenty of distractions. Good characters and story lines. Source: Booksprout. 4*

A LITTLE GETAWAY - Great characters. Some unpredictable kinks. Rare profanity, one F-word, and no spicy sex, yes, they have sex but the reader is not invited, so no boring sex scenes. Cannot put the book down until finished. 5*

THE BLUFF - Interesting with a couple of unexpected twists and a fun ending. Good characters and story lines. 4*

KILLER MOTIVES - One of those books that must be finished before putting it down. Interesting story lines with a variety of characters with secrets, and then some. Good pacing kept the pages flying with no vulgar language or sex but plenty of intrigue and happenings. Well written. 4*

LITTLE LOOSE ENDS - Continues about seven months after Killer Motives ends. Their past catches up with the Mancusios. There are plenty of twists, players and intrigue as they fight for their family's safety. Well written story lines made this another hard to put down book. 4*

THE GUEST HOUSE - Another entertaining, interesting, and intriguing story filled with good characters and immersing story lines that are believable making the book hard to put down. TGH picks up after The Stepfamily ends. There is a lot of easy to understand technical information about hearing aids devices for the D/deaf population as well as the difficulties with communication faced by the D/deaf. 4*

THE STEPFAMILY - Definitely one of the better books I have read lately. Interesting with good story lines. Every time there appears to be an end, there's more and a different story to add to the mess. Many secrets come to light and not all are favorable. Only thing I did not care for was the nose scratching at the end. The scratcher was smarter than that but that story line needed closing, poorly done. 4*

HEAD CASE - I enjoy reading books by Ms. Traymore. Well written page turners that hold my interest and have me thinking while I'm immersed in the story. Good characters, good story lines, nice romances all equal to an entertaining read. Two victims accepted their fates in the same way, only flaw in the story. 4*

The Unforgetting is a belter of a thriller from Bonnie Traymore. I have previously read and reviewed "The Bluff" and knew I was in for a good listen, not just for what I knew would be a well-written thriller, but also due to the accomplished and exceptional narrator (Helen Laser). This is a fantastic pairing, Laser having brilliant continuity and clear distinction between all characters and emulating the narrative perfectly

Closure can be a powerful thing, especially when one of your closest friends fell to their death ten years ago, but for Reagan, the remembrance service is unravelling a pandora's box of deception and lies. Reagan did not want to go, she did not want to travel and reunite with her friends from college, but battling post-partum depression, she is encouraged to go by her husband, after all, it is a no partners party

To add insult to injury, Reagan's nemesis Josh has not changed, still picking on everyone. Ella is still acting weird behind her picture-perfect smile, after all, the accident happened at her parents campground, at the party she arranged that spiralled out of control and was rashed by bikers and crunchies. Her husband Ted is ambiguous, the only partner allowed at the reunion due to being part of the friend group and Brady (aka Brainy, a nickname given by josh that he hates) the quietest, super intelligent giant of the group. All were there the night that Lainy fell, all were involved in the cleanup when they found her the next day, hiding the evidence so that Ella's family were not sued. But who was responsible?

Dual POV between Ella and Reagan, the suspense is maintained through well constructed back-stories and timelines, easy to follow and gripping the whole way.

Another belter from Bonnie Traymore and I cannot wait to see more from this very talented author

Synopsis

The day after a wild college graduation celebration, a group of friends discovered Lanie Martin at the bottom of a ravine, her neck broken from a tragic fall. Before they made the decision to contact the authorities, they cleaned up the aftermath of the party at Ella’s cabin in the Adirondacks. They coordinated their stories, with Ella pleading with Reagan not to reveal what she had witnessed. She maintained it was an accident, and everyone agreed. Reagan had been heavily intoxicated that night, leaving her with significant gaps in her memory. However, now that she’s in a postpartum phase, fragments of that night are resurfacing, and she can’t shake the feeling that they might be linked to the overwhelming depression she’s been facing. Is it guilt, or does she hold more knowledge than she realizes? When Ella invites her to a ten-year reunion at her family camp—a gathering meant for remembrance and healing—Reagan feels compelled to attend. Could the memories she’s trying to piece together be the key to her moving forward?

My thoughts
The Unforgetting explores deep-seated secrets, guilt, the tricky nature of memory, and the struggles of postpartum depression (just a heads up for trigger warnings). The story unfolds through the eyes of both Reagan and Ella. Reagan is on a quest to piece together her memories, while Ella is determined to keep any secrets hidden. Throughout the book, I found myself questioning why this group of friends even stuck together, which I think is part of what the author intended. It also shows how perspectives can shift based on different circumstances, leaving you unsure of who to trust. The ending caught me off guard, but I was definitely satisfied with it. Overall, I’d rate it 3.5 out of 5 stars.

The Unforgetting by Bonnie Traymore is a highly recommended psychological thriller where secrets from the past haunt the present.

Reagan is struggling with postpartum when buried memories from ten years ago are trying to resurface. At a raging party ten years ago her friend Lanie was found the next day dead at the bottom of a ravine. Reagan's memories of the night are blurry because she was wasted and doesn't remember much from that night. But now she feels like she is remembering bits and pieces from the night. Then Ella invites Reagan and others to a gathering of remembrance and healing at her family's cabin in the Adirondacks where the death occurred. Reagan attends with hopes that it will help her recover her memories.

This is a fast-paced, quick read. As one would predict, the reunion is tense and uncomfortable, and the buried memories are disturbing. There isn't a lot of character development beyond that of Reagan, which is perfunctory. The rest of the characters are quickly slotted into their roles into the entertaining but familiar narrative trope.

The good news is that the swift pace, high tension, and low page count will keep your interest high throughout. 3.5 Thanks to Pathways Publishing for providing me with an advance reader's copy via NetGalley. My review is voluntary and expresses my honest opinion.
