Why Memoir Matters: Learning from the Lives of Others

Memoir, as a genre focused on the lives of real people told from their own vantage point, gives audiences the unique opportunity to connect with the experience of others. Whether looking for guidance, consolation, or simply a new perspective, the audience gains a powerful and eye-opening sense of kinship with fellow human beings.

In the six lessons of Why Memoir Matters: Learning from the Lives of Others, associate professor and author Tahneer Oksman guides you through enduring categories and themes within the genre of memoir, exploring how these deeply personal stories work and why they are so impactful. The course also addresses the ethical responsibilities of the memoir writer, in terms of writing about personal life details and what it means to tell the truth as a writer while sharing personal memories, shocking events, and even family secrets.

While everyone has a story and a perspective of their own, many of the best-known and most resonant memoirs focus on the fundamental experiences and life-altering transitions of the writer’s life. From the painful process of growing up captured in a coming-of-age story, to the difficulties of ordeals like major illness and grief to the multigenerational upheaval of immigration, you will see how a memoir offers the audience an opportunity for healing, growth, and self-discovery through the stories of others.

Writing a memoir isn’t the same as telling your entire life story. It’s about capturing a specific experience—a story within your story. While memoirs used to be reserved for celebrities, since the 1980s and 90s, ordinary people have been publishing them… and with great success.

Why read them? Because they show us how others have faced and overcome challenges similar to our own. This audiobook touches on topics like education, migration, motherhood, family secrets, and illness.

But honestly, I found it boring. It didn’t capture my interest, and I didn’t take away any inspiration—something unusual for me, since I usually find new ideas in everything I read.

I really wanted this to be a good audible that would spark an interest or teach me something new about memoirs.
It did not.
It gave some good examples if you’re interested in memoirs, but besides that it just goes over the different topics that can be discussed.
Learning through others is good and all but this just wasn’t what I hoped.
If you want to know more of a history or gets recs then it could be helpful but that’s all.

The text feels rather shallow, offering a collection of banal observations such as the idea that motherhood is a transformative experience. It might still be of interest to those feeling overwhelmed by the sheer volume of autobiographical works out there. At the very least, the compilation offers a few worthwhile recommendations within the genre.

Very short, with a run time of around 3 hours in audio format. Some of its enjoyable, walking through different examples of memoir as a means of highlighting why they matter (and why we might consider our own). As a series of case studies it does get a bit dry and lacks any real points of inspiration, especially if that’s not your usual learning style (which it is not for me)

I love the process of writing and story telling, and this book brings great topics to light. It also reminds me why I love memoirs and biographies… I love seeing through others eyes.

I enjoyed this, but it wasn't anything I didn't already know. Memoir helps us relate to others, learn about the world around us and our own lives through others' stories.

I'm interested in people's stories. This book offered snippets of some very interesting memoirs and their motivations and experiences.
