This book covers a lot of different areas for the reader to find out more about becoming prepared for a man-made and/or natural disaster. Having been through a few hurricanes here in Southwest Florida, especially Hurricane Ian in 2022 when we didn't have electricity for weeks, I really appreciated that this book covers a lot of the things that are really important: obtaining and purifying water, how to make fire, alternative electricity sources, community, and even personal psychological and emotional preparation.

As a practicing mental health therapist, I particularly appreciated the fact that the author addressed at length the importance of personal psychological preparation, managing anxiety, and the importance of creating community. The author provided some excellent ideas for consideration in this topic, including mindfulness techniques, and discussing the importance of creating community BEFORE something bad happens. In this aspect, the book excels.

The author provides very detailed information about some of the topics, such as teaching multiple ways to build shelters, make fire, and purify water and gives some very practical steps to take. In other topics, such as emergency first aid and alternative energy sources , the book provides more of an overview of the various alternatives and provides questions for the reader to use to help them research their options outside of the book. One thing I would have loved would have been to provide more resources for figuring out those options or to start with that research.

All in all, though, this book is an excellent place to start your journey for prepping for disasters. Reading this book helped me nod in appreciation about what I've been through during hurricanes, as well as make a list of topics I need to learn more about. It also really was a great reminder of ways to create community NOW rather than waiting until the next disaster. I highly recommend this book not as "the" book to read about prepping, but as an important first step to help you identify the various aspects of preparation that will be helpful.

Most of us have experienced a temporary power outage, but have you ever wondered what to do if it lasted more than a few hours or days? Do you have the confidence that you can survive and provide for your family? Benjamin Dane offers answers and solutions to some basic questions you may have about how to even begin. Clean water is usually the first priority. But, if this is going to be a long-term situation, there are many other things you will need to know.

Go from panic to prepared with the tips in this remarkable book. Having a plan and some preorganization in place makes a tremendous difference if an emergency does occur. Whether it's the collapse of a major power grid, or recovering from a large storm, or if you have decided you want to become more self-sustained, Dane's beginner Prepper's guide gets you started in the right direction. I also was very pleased with the many links he provided for the reader; searching for help can bog you down. Keep in mind, though, it's good to print what you find most helpful now and save it in a waterproof container.

I reviewed this from the Kindle version, but have ordered the paperback to have handy if there's no internet for a period of time. I highly recommend this book!

We need to be prepared for the world we currently live in, and you never know when you are going to face a difficult situation like not having energy for hours or days (like even some developed countries have experienced recently). The author, an outdoor enthusiast, put together a fantastic guide in order to learn purification techniques, food preservation methods, share tips on how to create a safety perimeter, craft a fire-starting kit, or even how to build a communication plan. Skills that I never thought could be so important, but that even if luckily we never experience such a bad scenario, are interesting to learn about.

This book gives a solid general overview of what to expect in a grid-down situation and how to prepare for it. It covers the basics in a clear order, starting with how the power grid works and why it can fail, then moving into the main areas that matter most like mental preparedness, water, food, energy, shelter, first aid, and home security. The book has many illustrations that make the topics easier to follow and make it feel more engaging.
Overall, I’d say this is a good starter book for someone who wants a clear introduction to prepping and emergency readiness.

Good starting point

A solid introduction to the topic, especially for beginners. While I was already familiar with much of the information, the book does a great job of laying out the basics in a clear and accessible way. I would have liked to see more detail on survival solutions, but overall, it’s a well-structured and informative read for anyone new to the subject.
