And Afterthoughts Labs is no closer to changing the past than they were when the experiments began.
Kanara isn’t supposed to remember any of that. She isn’t supposed to remember anything that happened during her sixtieth trial as a test subject at Afterthoughts Lab. Meanwhile, none of Kanara’s friends remember her, other than Eliot, and she can’t talk freely with him, either. Security cameras feed her every word back to her captors, and there are spies in her therapy group.
Dr. Zylen says they're here to change the past. To save the world. But Isabella left behind a message, a clue from a previous test trial where she unraveled more of the truth than even Eliot knows. If Isabella is right, there's something Dr. Zylen isn't telling them. It could be a matter of life and death.
And if anyone finds out that Kanara's on to him? Well, that's a matter of life and death, too.
Kanara gets her memories wiped about every two weeks and relives arriving to the hospital for the first time for two years until this time she arrives and remembers everything from the last trial. This one is different. Everyone in their therapy pod is different, grieving a death that they’ve forgotten about, Kanara’s sister is in the pod for this trial this time, and Earth has been destroyed. All the patients in the hospital are being experimented on to find a way to change the past and save the earth.
The second book in the Afterthoughts series is just as amazing as the first! Plot twists and dramatic reveals. Things are explained a little better in this book and it really helps you understand the world but even with the explanations you still get the excitement of the thriller and unknown. I was very impressed with how well you actually come to know Kanaras alternate personality, Kay Lee in this one! The ending is a cliffhanger but I’m so excited for the next book!
In a future where the world has already been destroyed, Kanara is a test subject at Afterthoughts Lab, trapped in a cycle of memory erasing experiments meant to change the past. She’s not supposed to remember previous trials but she does. Isolated and watched, with only Eliot remembering her, Kanara discovers a hidden message revealing secrets about the lab and its true purpose.
Afterimage masterfully blends psychological tension with emotional depth. Kanara’s isolation is palpable, her paranoia justified, and her determination quietly heroic. The presence of constant surveillance and traitorous allies gives every scene a razor’s edge.
What really sets this apart is its slow burning mystery, unraveling layer by layer through breadcrumbs left by a dead girl who might have known too much. A chilling exploration of control, memory, and what it means to fight for the truth when the world insists you forget.
I loved Kanara and Eliot in this one as well and cannot wait for the next instalment!!
I WAS NOT PREPARED FOR THAT. I’m not sure exactly what I was expecting but this completely blew my mind!! In a good way! I really liked where the author took the story from here, it made sense for the story and was explained really naturally. I loved how the sci-fi aspects of this book made sense, like I could actually understand how this would work if it was a real thing. That made the story a lot easier to understand. The only problem I had with this book was the timeline. Supposedly a week had passed when the book was over but it really didn’t feel like it, if I’d had to guess I would have said like three days at most. That can probably be chalked up to the author not explaining what the characters did when they weren’t solving stuff in the story, but it still felt rushed to me. But the ENDING. The last two chapters were fantastic! I actually screamed out loud. But as far a cliffhangers go (and there is one in this book) I’m so so so thrilled with how the author decided to end this book and I’m counting down the days until the last one comes out!
I absolutely devoured this sequel to Afterthoughts! If you loved the sci-fi and mystery of the first book then you are going to love this one as our main group goes deeper down the rabbit hole about the fate of the Earth and get to work together in new ways (no spoilers). Having Jade join the group definitely added a new dynamic and it was really awesome getting to learn about some of the other characters through different perspectives. The way this one ends has me soooo excited to read the next one!
I read the first book in this series, and the prequel and loved them. I was itching to know what would happen next, with all the secrets out in the open and I fell into the story quickly turning the pages as I tried to predict the many twists and turns. Overall it was an excellent sequel, though there were some parts that I felt like could’ve been explained better. Though it didn’t really detract from the enthralling and compelling narrative. Will read the next book and wait anxiously to know what happens next. Recommended!
I absolutely loved the first book and am super happy to say I loved the this second book as well. Do not read this book until you read the first book, Afterthoughts, or you will not understand what is happening. This book picks up right after the first book ends and continues the story. Absolutely recommend this series and can’t wait for the next one!
Received a copy as an ARC reader. Really enjoyed it!!! I cannot wait to find how the series ends! Fantastic world building. Some of it was a bit predictable, but not in a bad way. Highly recommended the series!
Such a good quick read. I’m super excited to see what happens next. This author is amazing with their words and their descriptions. I love the sci-fi and mystery aspect of it. Highly recommend.
I loved this book just like the others!! I found it really well done, especially with the back and forth between perspectives. That was done very well with an easy transition between Kay Lee and Kanara. I enjoyed seeing more Eliot and Kanara together too. I think they’re building up to a great relationship. The only part for me that was a tad confusing was switching between thoughts throughout the chapter. It wasn’t all from Kanara’s perspective, as little thoughts from Eliot or another character were thrown within the dialogue. But overall it was a very good read and I’m excited for the 3rd book! I received an arc copy of this book for an honest review.
