Thanks to BookSirens for an ARC of this book. I’ve generally enjoyed books from this author so I was happy to read this one. Peter Winsloe and Geneva Randolph are best friends. Unfortunately, Geneva’s older brother Rand is also Peter’s best friend from school. The three of them are inseparable until Rand marries Brontë. Rand and his new wife move from the San Francisco area to Texas, and agree that with the help of Peter and Geneva, they will start their own business doing what Rand’s father does.
The story follows the journey of Peter and Geneva to Texas as both struggle to fight the attraction they feel for one another, and it should be no surprise that they fail in that respect. The banter between them, often filled with double-entendres, is amusing. I’m a sucker for the funny juxtaposition of words. For example, Peter and Geneva want to go for massages, but the only opening is a couples’ massage. “A moan escapes Geneva when the therapist presses up her back.” Peter is on the massage table right beside her and thinks, “This was a horrible idea.” And Geneva immediately tells him, “Oh my god, this was a brilliant idea, Peter.”
And I always enjoy a good description of a hangover, so I found this one, from Geneva’s POV, very funny: “Why did a portal to hell open in my brain and allow a demon to crawl out? And why is the world so loud? I think I can hear it spinning on its axis. I pry my eyes open, only to realize I’m not ready to be alive yet. The bed feels like lava, it’s so hot. I kick the comforter off.”
Since this was an ARC, it’s not a big deal that there were typos and occasional verb tense changes. I’m sure all will be fixed before publication. It’s an enjoyable story with fun characters and just a tiny bit of tension. It doesn’t delve too deeply into the feelings of the characters, so I didn’t find myself too invested in them, but I was glad to see it all work out. It was clear there would be a happy ending, and sometimes we all want a guarantee of just that. I’ll take it where I can get it.
