I am struggling to review this book, I'm just really not sure to what to say about it. I was seriously annoyed and underwhelmed for most of this book. Like, I am enjoying the overall story arc (even though we only get an inkling of 'the prophecy' plot for the first time at like 70% two books in), but this book is a series of weird decisions made by baffling and inconsistent characters. I just found it not making much sense.
The bare bones of it is that Lukas, the second Darekul bastard we learn about, is living a scrappy life amongst the outlaws who tried to assassinate the emperor. He captures an enemy officer, Elric, who ends up being the son of an important lord who can be used for political leverage. Great set up for a captive/captor situation, but there was like no tension at all. Elric makes himself immediately sexually available to Lukas with no conflicting feelings at all, he doesn't even do it as a strategic survival thing, he just really wants to get laid. Lukas barely tries to resist and catches feeling like toddlers catch colds. Such a waste of a potentially tense and delicious situation. Sure there's an element of what could be considered dubcon, but it really isn't.
I actually skimmed a lot of the romance elements because I found them pretty tedious, which is not my usual MO, but I just wasn't feeling them as a couple. I'm hoping the romance-writing elements improve in subsequent books, because this premise is actually not bad, even if the plot feels a bit cobbled together.

The Price of Freedom is Book 2 in the outstanding Heirs of the Empire series, which follows the bastard sons of the Crown Prince Rafus, heir of the Imperial throne of Azuria. I thoroughly enjoyed this book about Lukas Dareful (Lucky, Silverhand), who revolted against the Empire and became a member of the Mortingale Outlaws, with whom he fought for freedom from the Empire. A raid on the royal palace to kill the Emperor went wrong, and the blame was put on Lukas, thus labeling him a traitor to the Mortingales. While exiled from the Mortingales, he stole a sword, and as the story begins, Lukas was being punished for stealing a sword. His punishment was the chopping off of his right hand, his sword hand. A year later he was tentatively back with the Mortingales, but under the protection of Red Wolf, the son of the leader of the Mortingales. Lukas and Red Wolf were lovers, and were labeled as sly, or luxorite. Lukas captured a Commander of the Imperial Army, Elric Underlia (Lordling), while he was having sex with one of his soldiers. Since Elric is a royal, he was valuable and was going to be used as ransom to raise money for the Mortingales. The attraction between Lukas and Elric was intense, and Lukas could not bear trading Elric for ransom money.
The story plot is multi-layered and complicated, just like the characters. There are a lot of supporting characters to keep up with. My favorite supporting characters were Damon and Lyr, the stars of the first book. It was good to see them again and have them be a part of this book too. The author has done a fabulous job with world building, including adding a map of the Azurian Empire, a glossary of terms used, and an explanation of the Darek family. The story was brutal at times, but it is in context with the time of the story, and readers will be shocked by the betrayals that occur. There are lots of twists to keep readers engaged until the end. The story was a spicy, emotional, engaging drama that is full of struggle, angst, regrets, and betrayal. It is a deliciously forbidden steamy instalove romance that is a fast-paced page-turner. I look forward to reading more books in the series.

And the plot thickens.
It's only the second book in this series and boy, does it keep getting more and more interesting. Elric and Lukas' story is one that centers around lies, betrayals, a broken man with his flirty captive, a cute and brave pup and so much more.
The story built is absolutely stunning and easy to follow. The writing is beautiful and quite distinct. Jem really is putting out absolute gems so far.
Elric is a big fat flirt and I live for it. He is captured by Lukas and although he has secrets of his own and was so sure he wouldn't care for Lukas at all, this changes quite drastically when Lukas begins opening up to him. Elric is such a fun character and although his behavior is shaped based on his role he had before his current occupation, I am glad we got to see parts of the real him behind all the flirting, banter and suggestive remarks. The depth he had stood out and his development left me quite satisfied in the end.
Lukas, my broken man, loves and loves fiercely. He is quite fragile despite his strong, self assured exterior. The choice he towards the end was one that had me smiling in glee. The decision to leave it all for Elric was just so beautiful to see. Lukas is quite an interesting character and one that leaves a lasting impression on you.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I am definitely looking forward to the next book in the series. I am so invested in this storyline now and am absolutely loving it.

We are back in the Rose Court and the kingdom of Azuria for the second installment of the Heirs of the Empire series. Lukas is another bastard prince of the kingdom who ran away at 14 to become a sex worker and outlaw, losing his hand and faith in other people along the way. Elric was trained to be the the best concubine of the palace as a way for his father to get ahead. But when Elric is sent on essentially a suicide mission, the two men find themselves thrown together. Lukas intends to use Elric as a trade to earn his way back into the good graces of his outlaw band. Unbeknownst to them, they are merely pawns in a much larger game of intrigue. What they find in each other is love and acceptance of all that they are including the bad things they have done in their pasts. Also, they are sooo HOT together!!!!
This book is a captivating story following the profound impact of war, violence, and intolerance on individuals and a kingdom. Blackwing really doubles down on the fantasy world building started in book 1. The characters of Elric and Lukas are richly drawn, their motivations coming from the trauma forced on them by their fathers (or father figures) are painful but understandable. But amidst the darkness pushing at them from all sides, glimmers of hope emerge for the MCs – acts of courage, resilience, and the enduring power of deep love and understanding for another person. I have really enjoyed the journey so far and look forward to the next installment.

Lukas Dareful, the illegitimate son of the Crown Prince of Azuria, has not had the easiest life. At the age of fourteen, he ran away from the palace and joined an outlaw gang. The outlaws had branded him a traitor when an assassination attempt went wrong. To survive he wound doing things he should not have and as a result, when a palace robbery went wrong, he lost his hand for stealing He returned to the outlaw gang and is living in the basement of Red Wolf’s home. He thinks he has found a way back into the inner circle. He captured a very important hostage and through him, he hopes to redeem himself. Elric Underlia is royalty and could be used as leverage in a plot.
Both Lukas and Elric were broken in different ways. Lukas used whatever he could to help himself while Elric used flirting and witty come backs to cover up his hurt. The two are central to the plot which is well developed with many twists and turns to keep you glued to the pages. While betrayal and danger are a constant, the two men find themselves getting close and closer. Lukas is not sure he can follow through with his plans. This is the second book in this series. It is dark and filled with violence but that is what this world is all about. The story is fast paced and will keep your attention until the very end.

The Price of Freedom is the second book in Jem Blackwing's Heirs of the Empire series. And it has it all. Intrigue, betrayal, violence. And love. It's edge of seat stuff. Another bastard son of the heir to the Imperial throne of Azuria, Lukas goes from prince to an outlaw band, to a lone outlaw when his band deserts him because they think he betrayed them. Elric is a pawn, his father's victim for power and position in the court. Lukas kidnaps Elric to prove his loyalty to the outlaws.
It's an enemies to lovers book. Elric is gorgeous and flirty. Lukas is all brooding and tortured. The worldbuilding is excellent, adding layers to the storyline from book one. Freedom has some heavy themes, justice and betrayal, mystery and unyielding religion, overall trauma. It's nicely balanced with the blooming love and trust between the mains. Nice level of spice.
There are five Darekul princes. So this series has a few books to go before the great reveal. I'm sure they'll have compelling backstories like Damon and Lukas. Absolutely can't wait.
A good, fairly intense read. Worth a reread when we have the entire series in front of us.

Lukas's life has been a rough one. His life is hard, but to have his hand taken by the enforcers because of one little thing, so he took something that wasn't his. Is that a reason to take his hand? His life was much easier years ago when he was a pampered illegitimate son of the prince of Azuria. But those days are over when he ran and became an outlaw. Lukas knew he had to fight and awaken eyes to the empire. But that all changed when he and other outlaws decided to raid his old palace, and the outlaws felt that he wasn't to be trusted anymore. So now he has to find a way back into his old life by any means. What will Lukas have to do to do that? Well, the cost is to take a captive to ransom a man to get a good amount of money to start his life again. Will he succeed with this man he took, who is so cocky and full of himself? But in the end, he needs to because this man is worth a lot of money. Will the two of them survive not only each other but also stay safe from others?
This was the first book I have read by Jem Blackwing, but I can say it won't be my last. The world in this story was fantastic.

The Heirs of the Empire series is just so fantastic! I loved The Spoils of Victory and i'm just as head-over-heels for The Price of Freedom! The worldbuilding in this was top-notch and the characterization was engaging and well-established. The story had lots of action and dynamic energy, and i'm very much enjoying the way the magical elements are increasingly coming into play the more this world expands!
Blackwing writes some of the most compelling narrative i've read to date, with complex characters embodying trauma, super sexxxxxxy dirty-talkin' loving that made me blush, all navigating the challenges of a rapacious, conniving world. PLUS this installment had a POV that had me screaming, and the ending itself left me in heart-fluttering shambles!!! I loved it so much!!
Everything in The Price of Freedom has made me a monster for everything still to come for this series! Book 3 The Laws of Nature is up next, and the more i get to know these brothers, the more fascinated and hooked on Heirs of the Empire i get! Can't wait!

Wow. I mean. wow. I loved the first book so much, and I didn’t think there was any way this could top it but I’m so happy to be wrong about that. The characters in this book are so dimensional and complex, and the plot is so intriguing; it draws you in so completely. This book has romance, emotion, fantasy, world building, and (arguably) most importantly, a super hot main character with a very pirate-y hook. The moment I finished this book I immediately wanted to start the next one—I want to know what happens and where the story goes; I want to unravel this world and see if my hunches are right or if I’m wildly off the mark. Jem Blackwing’s writing and world building are amazing—my only real complaint is the editing mishaps throughout, but that’s understandable with self-published or newer authors who might not have access to the editing teams that come with large publishers. While they might distract a bit from the main story, it is easy to see past them when the quality of the story is so good. I am anxiously and impatiently counting down the days until the next book comes out.

Lukas’s story with Elric
Jem Blackwing gives us more incredible world building with this second of her Heirs of the Empire series. The heir in this book is Lukas who at the start of this book is back with the outlaws that he is accused of betraying. Elric is in the mountains as the commander of a small group who have been sent on an impossible mission. Of course they meet and adventures ensue. It’s hard to talk about this story without giving anything away and the whole thing is very complex as any good epic should be, but I will say that the story is fantastic. Ms. Blackwing is great at unveiling the story little by little and even dropping some red herring falsehoods in there to keep both us and her characters on our toes. The push/pull relationship between Lukas and Elric is at times lovely and at others heartbreaking. You never really know what these two guys are going to do and how they will ever be together. The ending is tremendously satisfying even though it opens up the door to a whole lot more books (not complaining though!) which really need to be read in order to understand the overall plot.

This is book 2 of the Heirs of the Empire series, and I would like to point out that the stories should be read in order to make sense. Ideally one should also read the bonus stories on the author‘s website. There’s one that belongs with each book. You need to sign up for the email newsletter to obtain the links but you can cancel it anytime.
I‘ve become rather fond of this world and the different and interesting characters in it. Lukas and Elric are a grumpy/sunshine couple with immediate attraction, and they’re also not shy about it. Their love story follows a similar pattern like Damon and Lyr‘s.
I was surprisingly devastated at the unexpected death of a side character who had grown on me.
The story is taking fascinating turns, and if I‘d thought earlier that I knew where it was going I was wrong. So I‘m on my toes for what’s coming next.
Side question: How do you keep a dog on a ship?
Question that occurred to me while reading the bonus story: Must they really keep calling each other „Bastard“ and „Lordling“? That seems more condescending than loving but I guess it’s their love language.

I was surprisingly devastated at the unexpected death of a side character who had grown on me.
The story is taking fascinating turns, and if I‘d thought earlier that I knew where it was going I was wrong. So I‘m on my toes for what’s coming next.
Side question: How do you keep a dog on a ship?
Question that occurred to me while reading the bonus story: Must they really keep calling each other „Bastard“ and „Lordling“? That seems more condescending than loving but I guess it’s their love language.

I was provided an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This is the 2nd book of the Heirs of Empire series, our hero is Lukas Dareful who became a member of the Mortingale Outlaws. Lucas is a disabled man with doubts and fears, but he is also brave and smart.
His captive (and later his lover) is Elric Underlia, but for the greatest surprise of my own I don’t want to talk about the love story of the novel now.
So you could ask me, why do you read it then? (Most of the time I also read a novel for the love interest… )
However in this story Jem’s world building is so rich, exciting and full of action that it is more enjoyable for me than the relation of these men.
Besides,
+ there are a lot of supporting characters,
+ we can read again about Damon and Lyr, the protagonists of the first book,
+ I give extra stars for the map of the Azurian Empire, and an explanation of the Darek family, too.
Can’t wait to read more of this rich and powerful empire.

So often the second book of a series really makes or breaks the whole thing. I can't count the number of multi-book series in which a brilliant and compelling book one was followed by second acts that left me wondering whether it was even worth continuing on with the next installment.
That is absolutely NOT the case with The Price of Freedom and the Heirs of Empire trilogy (or trilogy plus prequel novella)!
The brilliant world building continues. You mmet more rich, three dimensional characters - including side characters full of life, personality and often their own compelling secrets.
I feel I really know the people of this book and series, and I understand what truly motivates them and makes them who they are - even when the twists nad surprises come - just as I understand this world and some of the cultures within it.
This is an excellent book and a worthy successor to The Spoils of Victory. I find myself already hungry for next volume, although I know I won't be happy to see the trilogy end!

Oh my, I was so excited to receive this as an ARC reader and as soon as I put my nose in I just knew I would lose so much sleep. This was a continuation of the series yet it was a story of its own and that’s what I loved and needed. Of course we are back to one of the bastard sons of the empire of Azuria, Lukas, which means our MC has had to face many challenges in life but wooohooo the romance and action in this story kept me going and on my toes. Trying to regain his standing as an outlaw is the challenge of his life and how he has to go about this gets it all setup. You will not be disappointed with this one or debate whether to pick up the next book in the series. I don’t want to give spoilers but can I say Marko…I can say sidekick….and I’ll leave it there so I don’t say too much. Get this next book because it’s such a great world builder and I love Jem Blackwing, my new best writer love right this very moment in time.

Wow. I’m speechless. I was looking forward to this book so much after reading the Spoils of Victory and it was everything and more than I expected. Where to begin? First, Lukas, my broken, beautiful Lukas. The pain and loss he goes through would have brought any other man down to his knees, but not Lukas. His resilience and determination to make things right was amazing to see. Sweet and gentle Elric, you were such a joy to read. The way you accepted everything that Lukas thought were flaws and weaknesses and turned them into beautiful virtues and achievements. You SAW him as the incredible, beautiful and kind man he truly was. You showed him he deserved to be loved and he deserved you. I enjoyed this story so much. Their journey of accepting each other warts and all and loving each other with intensity made this book worth reading. Can’t wait to see more of the Darekul princes.

Neither Lukas or Elric finds himself in the best of positions in this second book in the series. Lukas finds his fortunes fall from bastard son and prince, to part of a band of outlaws to being on his own when they expel him from their band thinking he betrayed them. He has been through a lot by the time he kidnaps Elric as proof that he was not disloyal to his outlaw band. But as so often happens, those living on the edge in perilous times that start out as enemies at times find themselves making the journey from enemies/antagonists to friends and even lovers after spending time together and sorting out who their real issues are with. This was another compelling story in this series with more to come and I am looking forward to them.

I didn’t expect to love this series so much and definitely didn’t think that this could be better than the first. I loved this book, and it’s easily one of my favourite series that I’ve read in a long time. The plot is so interesting and I enjoyed the inclusion of magic (sword, ruins and Perl). I’m so intrigued to see how the story progresses and genuinely upset that I have to wait until next year for the third instalment! As always, a little spicy and I love the MM romances. It’s refreshing to read a MM romance as I haven’t found many. It’s nice for the characters to just be their true authentic selves and get a happy ending, despite the views of many.
It’s pride month and I would recommend to read this series to celebrate!

The world-building and character development in this book are amazing, intricate, and gripping. This book is dark and violent, and filled with intrigue, betrayal, and manipulation. The MCs have both suffered in their pasts, and are doing what they must to survive. They each plan to use the other to achieve their own ends, but as they journey together, they learn they have more in common than they knew. It's an exciting and riveting story on its own, and also adds more depth to the overall world and story arc. I am looking forward to reading where the author takes us in the next book.

Lies, Secrets, Betrayal and Love when least expected
I love this series so much!
Once I start reading I can’t put it down and once it is over I am already waiting to read the next one.
Another piece of the puzzle is shown to us in this incredible series as we follow the story of Lukas the outlaw and Elric (the flirty noble).
I fell in love with both of these characters and my heart broke for Lukas every time he was betrayed.
Lukas and Elric are both broken by their pasts, have been used and lied to by loved ones.
I am looking forward to book 3 of this wonderful series!

One of the things I appreciate about this series is that the plotting is as good as the romance. There wasn't a spot where I thought the narrative dragged - I wanted to know what happened next pretty much every page. And the feelings of mistrust and trust and mistrust again between Lukas and Elric follow the action and the way the two men interpret what is going on around them. Nothing is superfluous, not even the sex scenes.
It was great to have some of the characters in the first book return and I look forward to the ensemble cast growing with each book. In this book we see coalesce the direction for the whole series.
My only reservation is that I thought Elric didn't seem as developed as Lukas, even though his backstory seemed rich enough.
The use of the hook in the intimate scenes was pretty hot!

The beautiful cover caught my eye right from the start. And then I realized I already owned the first book and was even more delighted to be able to read it early!
It is quite different from the first book, which was great! Not because the first book was bad, but often a series has kind of the same setting and that can be boring. Especially when the series follows some brothers.
The characters are completely different as well! Unfortunately I couldn’t really connect with them.
Elric is very cocky, very sure of himself and of what he wants. He stumbles into capture and very early realizes that he can’t just fuck his way out. Still he tries a lot.
He had to learn very early how to make himself valuable. There is always some calculation behind his actions.
Lukas is very broken. Not only bodily, because he is missing a hand. But also mentally. He lost his mother very early, got betrayed quite a lot, and some other bad things happened to him.
I felt like we didn’t get much insight into his mind though. I don’t really feel like I know him. Tell me if I’m wrong but I think we were a lot inside Damon’s head in the first book, but I don’t really think we were inside Lukas’.
Also I never really felt a connection between Elric and Lukas. Yes, they wanted to fuck and were attracted to each other. But when they first declared their love for each other I was like: “what, why?” It could very much be a me-thing! I couldn’t connect to them and maybe that’s why I couldn’t feel their connection either. I also found some of the sex scenes rather weird.
The most interesting characters for me were actually some side characters.
I think one of them might even play a bigger role in the upcoming books and I’m quite excited for that!
When it comes to the storyline I definitely recommend starting with Spoils of Victory!
There’s still more intrigue and mystery woven into the story and it connects with it. We still didn’t get answers I desperately already wanted there. Instead we get even more questions and I can’t wait to read the next book in the series! I’m already looking forward to the foreshadowed show-down.
I’m all in for the plotting, scheming, and intrigue at court! The religious themes with olds gods and myths are done exactly how I want them in my high fantasy books!
I very much see myself rereading all the books when the series is finished, simply to appreciate all the connections and details better.

Great addition to the series!
I loved the Price of Freedom by Jem Blackwing. It's the second book in the Heirs of the Empire series. I loved Lukas and Elric’s story. I loved the twists and turns in the book. My emotions were on a rollercoaster ride. I can say that I was so happy that the dog was not harmed in this book. I did cry over Red Wolf and Little Lamb. I look forward to reading the next book when it comes out.

Elric was … spicy. Whereas Luka’s was, just … lost maybe. Their love story and development felt genuine and heartfelt. A soft weaving of connection to The Spoils of Victory. I loved when Elric and Lukas finally succumbed to their attraction. Their banter throughout the book was light … but real. I would highly recommend this book … this series!

Wow what another great addition to this series, again the world building, plot and characters are great, this is Lukas and Elric’s story who have both been betrayed in their pasts by people who should have loved and protected them but we get another piece of the puzzle in this instalment and I really can’t wait for the next book to see what comes next in this great series.

Lukas and Elric are a great couple and I always enjoy a srory where the kidnapper falls for his hostage and they have to deal with the complications from that. This series has fantastic world building and I'm loving all the scheming and plotting to bring down the corrupt regime and restore peace, prosperity and honor to the land.

I have been avidly awaiting this book and oh its so good! Don't want to give away any spoilers as you really need to read this series! However it is a book that literally has everything, well written with superb word building plus a storyline full of twists and turns keeping you completely captivated until the end. And thats without the brilliantly engaging main and side characters! Oh and lets not forget the steam 😜 Highly recommend

I loved this book. This series is my kind of level of plotty. I struggled a bit to like the character of Damien in the first book but loved both Lukas and Elric in this instalment. The plot overall is developing nicely and I can wait for the next instalment in the series
