Determined daughters. Controlling mothers. There’s no such thing as friendly competition in a twisty novel of suspense about ambition, revenge, and unrealized dreams.

Valerie Yarnell is a hardworking single mother who’d do anything for her daughter, Kate. Kate is a dancer with dreams of stardom, just like her talented best friend, Colette. Despite Valerie’s sacrifices, it’s Colette’s mother, former prima ballerina Elise, whom Kate adores. And Colette has become like the practically perfect sister Kate never had. How can Valerie not feel frustrated, ineffectual, and a little jealous of the queen bee of dance moms? Not only has she hijacked her daughter, but Elise is married to the man Valerie pines for.

Rivalries are forming. Tension is mounting. In preparation for an elite dance competition, Kate outshines the more promising Colette onstage, and the pressure is on for Colette to keep her position in the spotlight—and especially to keep her demanding mother happy. Who could have foreseen the violent attack that sabotages everything? Anyone who’s been watching closely.

As ruthless and sinister ambitions are exposed, a media firestorm and an explosive town scandal erupt. Before it’s over, two mothers and two daughters will learn just how fierce and dangerous a rivalry can still get.

As a former competitive dancer (with daughters currently living that same world!), this slow burn psychological suspense hooked me right away. Centered around two dance moms and their daughters (Valerie & Kate, Elise & Colette) it starts with friendly competition and spirals into obsession, rivalry, and the dark side of ambition. Told in multiple POVs, the tension builds steadily until it boils over in the final chapters, leaving me anxious in the best way. Dramatic, character driven, and full of “just one more chapter” energy, this one explores how far a mother will go for her child’s success. Narrator Ann Marie Gideon delivers as always—engaging, sharp, and perfectly matched to the story’s simmering unease.

Dnf at 36%. I liked some concepts of this book. The ballet and it was giving me Ginny and Georgia vibes. But there was just too much drama. Not enough thrills in my opinion. So that’s why I couldn’t finish it. Plus some of the characters were driving me crazy.

Have you ever met a mom who is obsessed with her daughter's achievements in sports? We're talking a level of Dance Moms obsessed. Jennifer Jabaley's What's Yours Is Mine offers a fun take on this dynamic, featuring two teenage best friends who are dancers, one over-the-top mom, and another mom simply trying to reconnect with her daughter.

What I Liked About What's Yours Is Mine:

I really enjoyed the characterization in Jabaley's book. The story is told from the different perspectives of the four characters: Elise, Colette, Valerie, and Kate. We get a look into the life of dancers and their moms. Elise is the manic mom of Colette's achievement in dance. Colette is doing everything she can to make her mom happy. Kate is Colette's best friend, and a dancer herself. Valerie is Kate's mom. She struggles because she doesn't understand Kate's love of dance. She also doesn’t understand why Kate would rather be at Colette's house all of the time.

My favorite character was Kate. I admire someone who has grit and determination to achieve her goals. She persists even if she doesn't have the means to make it happen. In order to pay for her dance lessons, Kate even cleans the dance studio to help offset the fees.

My least favorite character was Elise. You aren't supposed to love her, but I think a lot of parents will relate to her, especially if you have a child involved in sports.

This was an easy read, and I definitely wanted to find out how it ended. I gave this four out of five stars because I enjoyed reading it. The ending seemed a little rushed, but I thought it wrapped up nicely. Middle school readers and young adults would enjoy this book as well.

When the parent is more jacked up mentally than the child, throw in some “unfriendly competition” this is a true recipe for disaster! These dance moms did not come to play & this story between Valerie & her daughter Kate, and best friend turned rivals Elise & her daughter Colette, was definitely a wild ride. I enjoyed the multiple POVs as it was a nice touch to see this story unfold in first person from the different characters & it definitely kept you anticipating what’s next. I really enjoyed the narration in this audiobook, Ann Marie Gideon did a phenomenal job bringing life to these characters.

Elise absolutely worked my last nerve, and I felt bad for Colette as she dealt with her mom’s obsession to live vicariously through her. You could feel the emotional turmoil Colette endured while trying to keep her mom happy. I admired Valerie as she tried her best to navigate through teenage hormones, as a working single parent. I was rooting for her the whole time and truly wanted her & Kate’s relationship to improve and see them love on each other. Overall a solid & enjoyable read & would recommend this one! Thank you Brilliance Publishing & Audio and NetGalley for this advanced listening copy. All opinions are my own.

This was so entertaining. I loved how the tension built as the book progressed. I did not know how all of this drama was going to play out and was just waiting for the ball to drop. The jealousy and competition between the moms was fun and crazy! This is definitely different from other thrillers….and I loved that. I'm happy to have read it. I will be interested to read this author's other books in the future. It was a winner for me.

This book was absolutely crazy! Colette and Kate: best friends. Dancers. Colette's mom Elise just wants her daughter to have everything she never accomplished. With a huge money prize, why wouldn't you want to do everything in your power to get it? The rivalry and competition between the characters will leave you gasping. Everyone in the Pulse is so excited to be able to read What's Mine Is Yours by Jen Jabaley and I'm one of them. This book is explosive and my flabbers were gasted. I will be thinking about this book for a long time. I highly recommend.

Jennifer Jabaley’s adult debut novel “What’s Yours is Mine” was quietly sinister and an emotionally unsettling psychological thriller.

This story focused on Valerie, a single mother, who had sacrificed everything to support her daughter Kate’s dance dreams. Kate’s best friend, Colette, came from a more privileged background and was intensely pushed by her former prima‑ballerina mom, Elise, who was living vicariously through her. What began as a supportive, tight-knit dance-family dynamic spiraled into ruthless rivalry once both girls entered a prestigious competition for a high-stakes prize and recognition.

There were a few elements of Jabaley’s novel I was drawn to. One being how the narrative was structured. The story was told from multiple perspectives, including Valerie, Elise, Kate, and Colette. I also found the ballet theme engaging. Having been a former ballet dancer, I enjoyed this storyline. And lastly, I held interest in the gradual reveal of tension that built through escalating sabotage, mind games, and simmering resentments until a shocking act of violence forces the truth into the open. This made for a fast paced dialogue and added depth to the dialogue.

Jabaley’s strength lied within the stark differences between Elise and Valerie’s personalities-one being emotionally detached and manipulative and the other burdened and eager to please. This created an organic sense of tension between them. Furthermore, Jabaley fabricated relatable themes of motherhood and ambition with all the delicious drama that can happen between mothers, daughters, friends and competitors. Around the halfway mark the storyline really climaxed with a dramatic, dark twist that I didn’t see coming. The momentum carried through until the shocking culmination. This made this book utterly compelling.

Overall, this novel blended psychological thriller elements with intense drama along with a sprinkle of the young adult genre and a sprinkle of the adult domestic noir genre. Collectively, “What’s Yours is Mine” was an unsettling look at motherhood, competition, and the destructive lengths people go to protect their dreams. I’d recommend this book to women that love domestic suspense featuring female rivalry, privilege vs. desperation, and twists grounded in emotional stakes.

The audiobook narrator, Ann Marie Gideon, has a clear, expressive style that brought depth to both tense and emotional scenes. I like how she differentiated each character by giving each character a distinct voice and emotional tone. Also, Her pacing and diction made it easy to follow the narrative particularly with this story’s multiple characters.

A big thanks to NetGalley and Brilliance Publishing for the early listen—happy to share my thoughts!

This tale of best friends turned rivals had me riveted from the beginning! What's Yours Is Mine by Jennifer Jabaley was a roller-coaster ride through the competitive world of dance.

I admit I've only seen a few episodes of Dance Moms and was wholly unprepared for the intensity of not only the dancers and moms, but the politics of who gets what roles in performances. I was fascinated by the behind-the-scenes peek at the dance world and the dedication required by the dancers.

With increasing tension, Jabaley deftly weaves best friend drama, teenage insecurities, ambition, and the intricacies of mother-daughter relationships with a tale of suspense. I flew through the last hundred pages!

Read this if you like:
• Suspenseful page-turners
• Dance Moms
• Controlling mothers
• Stories about family dynamics
• Best friends turned rivals
• Behind-the-scenes into the dance world
• Books about mother-daughter relationships

✨⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨

Could. Not. Put. This. Down.

I just finished Jennifer Jabaley’s What’s Yours Is Mine and wow… I’m still catching my breath.

This book hooked me from page one and didn’t let go. Valerie, a single mom doing everything she can for her daughter, ends up tangled in rivalries, betrayals, and shocking twists that feel both heartbreaking and thrilling. The dance world backdrop is fierce and glamorous, but underneath it all is a story about ambition, love, and just how dangerous envy can become.

By the time I got to the explosive climax, I was racing through the pages, completely immersed in the drama and suspense. It gave me Big Little Lies mixed with Dance Moms, but darker and more addictive. Honestly, I think this is going to be one of the standout thrillers of 2025.

👉 Question for you: Do you think mother-daughter rivalries are tougher to navigate than friendships filled with competition?

I've heard stories of how crazy competitive dance can get- here's another one for you. I felt terribly for all the kids in this book: both the girls who were pitted against each other and the poor brother/boyfriend who was caught in the middle as well as being the obviously second favorite in his home. I was rooting for the girls to see past the drama and just be friends again.

✨️ The team at @thrillerbookloversthepulse are reviewing What's Yours Is Mine and are enjoying it !! 🔥

What's Yours Is Mine is a character driven novel that takes us on a wild ride. Constant secrets, lies, drama, suspicions and paranoia. It also delves deep into the subject of obsession and the lengths some will go or push their children. I don't know much about the dance world but I really enjoyed how the author described it and how the subject was approached. For me this one reads more as a domestic drama than a thriller !

The characters are all pretty unlikable to be honest, but that's what made this book for me. It's what made me keep reading, I just needed to know what happened. The ending was not what I expected and it took me by surprise !!

Overall, an entertaining and fun domestic drama. Fans of character driven plots will definitely be hooked on this one. The suspense is continuously building with many secrets to uncover along the way.

So while books about dance aren’t something that I typically gravitate towards, this one checked so many of the boxes I look for in a suspense / thriller novel. I went in blind, all I knew was it was a thriller described as…

“Determined daughters. Controlling mothers. There’s no such thing as friendly competition in a twisty novel of suspense about ambition, revenge, and unrealized dreams.”

Nothing about this screams dance so I had no idea what I was getting into. I have no regrets!

Let me tell you, this book is 𝙈𝙀𝙎𝙎𝙎𝙎𝙎𝙔 and has so many layers of dysfunction and toxicity. The best part…it’s not my circus, these aren’t my monkeys…this book hits you with all of the drama and best of all…it stays on the page…cause you certainly wouldn’t want any of this chaos in your life.

You want an escape from any chaos in your life?! Well settle in….its gonna be a bumpy ride.

Highly recommend. Finished it in under 24 hours.

Suspicion. Paranoia. Social media. Scandal. Competition. Elite dancing. Yes. Yes. And yesss!!!

I’ve had so many great reads recently and just add this one to the pile. ALL THE STARS!

Valerie always thought she was the best mom ever - even if she didn’t actually know what she was doing. But when she overhears her teenage daughter saying something hurtful about her it sends her spiraling.

Enter Elise - the Queen Bee of the dance moms, and mother to Colette. When Valerie’s daughter Kate starts spending more time with Elise and Colette, Valerie feels replaced. And she’s not about to let that happen.

Kate has always admired Elise - she’s dating her son and best friends with her daughter - but what Elise doesn’t see coming is that Kate is becoming a better dancer. Better than Colette. And that is not something Elise will allow. Especially not with a major recital coming up. Colette has to win. No matter what.

Oof! The tension just kept building and building until it finally exploded. Like a rollercoaster that climbs slowly - then drops full speed ahead before you even realize what is happening.

I loved the dance world setting and couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. Sharp writing, unhinged characters, and a plot that keeps you hooked - wondering where it’s all headed.

You’re waiting for it, but you aren’t even prepared for when it hits. Fantastic read.

What’s Yours Is Mine by Jennifer Jabaley. Thanks to @booksparks #src2025 for the gifted copy ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Kate and Colette are the best of friends. Their shared dream of career dancing unites them until Kate’s talent begins to match Colette’s. Colette’s mother, with her helicopter drive for her daughter, begins to inflame rivalries and drama that take over their community.

Looking for a fast paced, hard to put down read for these last summer weeks? Here it is! I read this in one afternoon; literally not able to put it down. While there is a lot of teenage drama, it’s serious drama as these girls have adult like responsibility and ambition with dance. The whole story is heard on the two girls friendship and their relationships with their mothers. There’s a lot of their mother’s past that comes to play as well. For being such an action packed and suspenseful read, it was amazing how the history also played a part. Highly recommend this one!

“Later, it would all make sense. Why everything happened the way it had. It’s not like war just starts. Everyone gets so wrapped up in their own drama. Toxicity starts sprouting, but no one sees it. Until it’s everywhere. Suffocating you.”

What’s Yours Is Mine comes out 8/5.

Valerie and Elise each have a daughter. Both mothers and daughters are friends and only become rivals when the girls are each competing for the coveted Duncan Prize which is worth $100,000 to the best gymnast. And we all know what rivalry can bring out in a competitor who will do anything to win! The novel does a deep dive into obsession, vindictiveness, and jealousy as we see what mothers--and also daughters--will do to succeed!

This was a gripping page-turner that kept me reading well past bedtime. I found every character enjoyable (even when not likeable) and believable, which made the story all the more engaging. I couldn’t wait to see what happened next.

That said, the ending left me a little underwhelmed; it fell somewhat flat compared to the strong build-up.

Still, the ride to get there was worth it, and I would happily recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys suspense.

This twisty suspense by @jenniferjabaley was such a fun thriller with the most devious, backstabbing dance moms.

Y’all. Some of this one rang a little too true as I remembered some of the moms during our kids’ childhood and adolescence in the DFW suburbs.
It gets serious. Let me tell ya!
We always had a great group of parent friends, but we witnessed the ones that could have been characters in this book

Kate and Collette are childhood friends, now in high school, who share their love of dance. They’re both students at the Volkov Dance Studio in Atlanta, GA. Kate’s mom, Valerie Yarnell is a single mother and nurse who works hard to provide a life for her daughter.

Collette’s mom, Elise, a former NYC prima ballerina is driven to the point of obsession in the pursuit of her daughter’s rise to dance stardom.
She may even focus so much that she’s neglecting her husband, lawyer Andrew Carrington and their teen son Trey.

Kate and Collette are best friends. Kate is also Trey’s girlfriend.
Kate adores and looks up to Elise.
She’s like one of the family - until her talents are perceived by Elise as a threat to Collette’s success.

Elise becomes more and more over the edge about the situation and the upcoming competitions. She’s always looked down on Valerie.
Now she suspects something going on between Andrew and Valerie.
She’s suspicious of everyone and goes behind the scenes to make sure everything goes her way.
No matter what.

This is the perfect domestic suspense thriller that will have you turning the pages and wondering what’s going to happen next! There was even a twist at the end that I surely didn’t except.

4.5 rounded up.
Thanks to Lake Union for letting us get a sneak peak of What’s Mine Is Yours at The Pulse.

I have to be honest, I cover / title grabbed this one when it was offered to us over at @thrillerbookloversthepulse. I had no idea what it was about, so imagine my shock when the plot turns towards two girls in a dance company. I have never danced, I’ve never even wanted to take dance classes, but I have always been absolutely OBSESSED with the dance life. Something about the harsh juxtaposition between grace & beauty and cutthroat competition is so fascinating to me.

I don’t think any character in this book was completely innocent, but they all had moments of vulnerability that made me feel for them and want to see them succeed…yes even the worst one lol. I enjoyed getting both the teenage girls' perspectives as well as the adult women's perspectives. Themes of desperation, protection, desire and what we’re willing to do to achieve those things for ourselves or those we love.

I really enjoyed this book and had a good time listening to it, but it’s important to mention that it also touches on some heavier stuff that I find important. First, the mental health (and to a smaller degree, the dietary) issues that the ballet world can come with. It also touches on hereditary mental health issues, fractured families, generational lies, and rocky marriages.

I did have very strong suspicions as to the ‘twist’, but it didn’t detract from my enjoyment at all. What’s Yours Is Mine definitely reads more like a contemporary fiction with a mystery plot rather than a thriller, but with the characters and story that Jennifer Jabaley presented us, I was as glued to the book as if it were a high octane, edge-of-your-seat action thriller.

This book had me all up in my feelings. I was irritated, nosy, and needed answers. Some of these characters made me want to scream. The tension between the moms was wild, but it also felt way too real. It was full of drama, jealousy, and bad decisions from start to finish. I didn’t want to stop reading because I had to know who was going to snap first 👀🙊

I really enjoyed this one! I loved the authors writing style and the characters that were introduced. WHAT’S YOURS IS MINE was a relatively different kind of book for me. I haven't read anything about dancers and competitions, but this stood out. There was a lot of rivalry, drama and jealousy. My daughter was never in competitions like this so I never really thought about all the things that could happen between the girls, but here it was just one mom in particular. I think the author did a great job of keeping me guessing. The twist was at the very end and I wouldn’t predicted it. The flow of the audiobook was great! I especially liked this narrator, I don’t believe I’ve ever listened to anything by her before. If you’re looking for something a little different than your average thriller, I think you’ll like this one.

As someone who usually isn’t a fan of character-driven books, every once in a while I get surprised by how much fun they can actually be. This book definitely took me by surprise.

For the most part, it’s all about Elise, Colette, Kate, and Valerie — and of course, the one thing tying them all together: dancing.

Dancing is basically the thing that unites and divides throughout the whole book. It was the friendship starter between Kate and Colette, the mentorship between Kate and Elise, and the reason behind the sour relationship between Kate and her mom.

I genuinely loved how each character was written and fleshed out — they all felt so realistic and vivid. I also loved the focus on how familial pressure can turn a sport or hobby from a passion (and a bonding experience) into an obsession.

Surprisingly, my favorite character was Elise. She was obviously a horrible human being, but she made the strongest impact on me. Her hyperfixation on Colette’s dance career — and how it was always tied to her own experience as a professional dancer — had me in a chokehold. I loved how the author showed that, for Elise, Colette’s career wasn’t her own — it was Elise’s second chance at glory.

On the other hand, Colette didn’t match Elise in intensity for most of the book, which is why some parts didn’t make much sense when she was involved. She was mostly just reacting to her mother. I won’t say she was a pushover because she was clearly a victim of her mom’s ambition — but let’s be real, she was kind of a meh character.

The dynamic between Valerie and Kate was the complete opposite. It was mostly Kate acting out and Valerie despairing — throughout the entire book. Honestly, I think Kate was a brat. Valerie may not have been totally on board with dance, but she paid for lessons and accepted it as a hobby — which is more than a lot of parents do. And as for her being a single mom, I totally get why she wanted a stable career path for Kate. For me, the fact that Kate didn’t even try to understand her mom’s perspective was seriously frustrating.

As for Valerie, apart from the weird love choice (which was completely unbelievable and only there for drama), she was actually a pretty mild character. Again, she was the Colette of the dynamic — mostly just reacting instead of initiating.

Even though some parts didn’t quite make sense, I was still hooked by the characters and how they reacted to everything happening around them. In a way, it was like watching reality TV — you’re just there for the drama.

The ending was my least favorite part and the reason this gets 4 stars instead of 5. The whole explanation about the accident just didn’t make any sense — it was wild, even by book standards.

I was honestly waiting for another unexpected character to be behind it. It still would’ve been a stretch, but it would’ve made way more sense.

Overall, I really enjoyed it and would definitely recommend it.

Thank you to Lake Union Publishing and Jennifer Jabaley for the ARC!

“She had been a mother for fifteen years and this is what she knew about parenting: nothing…”

Valerie is a hardworking single mother who will do anything for her daughter, Kate. Kate and her best friend, Colette, both have big dreams of dancing. Kate has a special bond with Colette’s mom, Elise, who is a former ballerina. Though Valerie appreciates this, it’s also frustrating. Especially because Elise is also married to the man Valerie is secretly longing for. When Kate outshines Colette onstage, tensions go from high to wild!

When this book came to us at The Pulse, the storyline immediately spoke to me.I may not know much about ballet, but I do know about intense moms! LOL, add in a mystery and I was sold. Simply put, this book was a wild, entertaining ride. I wasn't sure how any of it was going to play out but I was absolutely gripped by Kate and Colette, and especially their mothers. The jealousy, the tension and the comparison were all leaping off the pages and I couldn’t wait to see what was going to happen next. This was the first book I read by Jennifer Jabaley but I can’t wait to see what she does next.

”What’s Yours is Mine” is out NOW! This review will be shared to my instagram blog (@books_by_the_bottle) shortly :)

Kate and Colette have been best friends since they were little, bonded at their love for dance. Kate’s mom Valerie and Colette’s mom Elise…. not so much. A young, single mom, Valerie is just trying to balance everything around her. Elise, rich, married, a former prima ballerina, wants nothing more than for Colette to be the best. But when Kate and Colette both get accepted to compete in a competition, tensions rise and accusations are made. And what’s going on in Valerie’s love life? And what really happened during Elise’s time as a prima ballerina?

This was my first ever ARC and my first Jennifer Jabaley book but it definitely won’t be my last! The plot was so interesting, dance based thrillers might be my new favorite subgenre.

I really liked all of the characters especially as the book was told in a 3-person perspective switching between Elise, Valerie, and Colette. At first it definitely took some adjusting to and keeping track of who was talking got confusing occasionally but after a few chapters I was locked in!
When Valerie felt like she was a bad mother, I really felt for her. When Colette was stressed about dance, so was I. When Elise was suspicious about other dancers, I was questioning them myself.

Overall, a really great book that any thriller reader should put on their list to buy as soon as it comes out on August 19th!

Having kids involved in performance arts is what initially drew me to this novel, as it's about two teenagers competing for a prestigious ballet award. I love seeing my kids in shows, no matter what role they are playing, and will cheer them on every time. And it always makes me happy when my oldest gives me a shout-out in his bio. However, I would never do what one of the mothers in this novel did for her daughter to try to put her ahead of everyone else.

While this book is set up as a thriller, it has more of a domestic suspense feel. There are some parts that are more intense and there is a mystery involved, but overall it's about the lengths people will go to in order to win a competition (whether it's for themselves or for their children). There are a few different perspectives alternating through the story, but Elise is so unlikable that seeing her point-of-view doesn't change how I feel about her. She just made me so angry the entire time and I really wanted to yell at her.

Jennifer Jabaley is a skilled writer and keeps the story engaging throughout. I didn't know who to believe at times and I just wanted Valerie to come out on top after everything she had been through in her life. I was definitely nervous for her the most. I could also relate to her in terms of her level of support for Kate. She was more hands-off, while still caring and taking an interest. Of course, Kate didn't see it that way.

Overall, this was a really good novel and I'm still thinking about it! There are a lot of twists and turns that will keep you guessing as to what really happened.
