Fr. Mark-Mary Ames is the Director of Communications and the Director of Priestly Studies of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal (CFR). The primary mission of the CFR community is a wholehearted embracing of Jesus Christ and their Holy Father, St. Francis of Assisi. Through their commitment to prayer and contemplation, the study of Sacred Scripture, fidelity to the Church and the sacraments, their fraternal life, and their generous service to others especially the poor, the CFRs receive the nourishment necessary to live out their lives as sons of St. Francis in the Capuchin tradition.

Fr. Mark-Mary is the host of the Ascension Presents video series The CFRs and the host of the 2025 podcast The Rosary in a Year (with Fr. Mark-Mary Ames, CFR). He was also the executive producer of the Poco a Poco music album featuring Br. Isaiah, CFR, and is the author of both Habits for Holiness: Small Steps for Making Big Spiritual Progress and The Father: 30 Meditations to Draw You Into the Heart of God.

His favorite work, however, is not nearly as public. Near and dear to Fr. Mark-Mary’s heart is his work walking one-on-one with the suffering, hearing confessions, and offering service as a regular chaplain to the Sisters of Life formation convents.

I thought this book was a waste of money, you do not need it when doing, rosary in a year.

This is an excellent prayer book. It breaks up the rosary in bite size portions and creates the habit of praying, by using micro habits. This book explains and breaks down each portion of the rosary and the mysteries showing what portions of Bible they come from. The use of sacred art keeps you mindful of praying with the best spirit you can and encourages meditation.

I listened to the Rosary in a Year, and the Prayer Guide was a helpful addition, especially with the paintings to which Fr. Mark Mary Ames alluded. The podcast and the book deepened my experience of the rosary although I have prayed it daily for decades!

This is the first volume from Father Mark-Mary I have read but I am certain it will not be the last. I know other books from him will be very different than this volume, but reading through this volume and listening to the first 6 weeks of the accompanying Podcast has convinced me I will love his writings. But back to this volume. The description of this book states:

“The Rosary in a Year Prayer Guide helps Catholics develop a lasting love for the Rosary and build a relationship with Jesus and Mary. Every day for 365 days readers will be accompanied through daily reflections, insights, and meditations as they grow in praying the Rosary.

I really appreciated that the eBook was available before the Podcast began. I have a dual form of dyslexia and prefer eBooks so I can change the font, and the colour of the font and page to make reading easier. I sat for a few hours one Saturday and read through the rest of this volume so I could review it during the inaugural year of the podcast. I did not think it would be fair to write a review without having finishing the volume. Even though I have read the other 6 ‘In A Year Companions’ for the Bible in a Year and Catechism in a Year.

“INTRODUCTION
About This Phase

During the final thirty days of the year, we will pray a 5-decade daily Rosary, using the skills and tools we’ve developed throughout the year.

We will begin praying the 5-decade Rosary, including the introductory and concluding prayers. You have been preparing to pray a full Rosary as you slowly built up to saying 5 decades a day in the last phase. If you struggle with this, have no fear; there will be advice along the way!

In addition, we will start praying the mysteries associated with each day of the week, rather than assigned mysteries. This way, you will be praying the mysteries of the day with Catholics around the world.

By the end of this phase, you will have prayed a daily Rosary faithfully for a month, in addition to all the work you have done to build the habit and practice meditation. You will be praying the Rosary like never before!

PRAY
Every day of this phase, we will pray a 5-decade Rosary, including the introductory and concluding prayers. We will meditate on the mysteries of the day as we pray the prayers of the Rosary.

Tips for this phase
•If you have trouble remembering which mysteries to pray each day of the week, refer to the chart on the following page.
•The longer introductory and concluding prayers of the Rosary can be difficult to memorize. In the following pages, these prayers are printed out for you.
•At this point in The Rosary in a Year, you have faithfully been praying for almost a year! If the time of day you selected is not working anymore due to the longer time commitment, don’t be afraid to revisit and find a new time that works for you.
•We have included a chart for you in the following pages to fill in the mystery assignments for each day and track your progress as you finish the podcast.
•Keep up the habit. As we have discovered this year, there are so many rich graces available through the power of the Rosary. After the podcast ends, continue praying the Rosary for yourself, for your friends and relatives, and for the Church!

WHEN TO PRAY EACH SET OF MYSTERIES
•Sundays: glorious mysteries*
•Mondays: joyful mysteries
•Tuesdays: sorrowful mysteries
•Wednesdays: glorious mysteries
•Thursdays: luminous mysteries
•Fridays: sorrowful mysteries
•Saturdays: joyful mysteries

*Optionally, the joyful mysteries may be prayed on Sundays in Advent, and the sorrowful mysteries may be prayed on Sundays in Lent.”

I especially appreciated sections 4 and 5, praying with reflections from the saints or with artwork. This is another excellent volume from Ascension. It is a great resource for those following the podcast. It a tool that will assist and help those following the podcast as they progress throughout the year. I can easily recommend it.

I can't say enough about how this podcast and prayer guide have changed my life. As Catholics, we are called to constant conversion of spirit and my ultimate conversion experience happened on Day 61. Life-changing grace that led me to confession for the first time in many many years and I am now back in a state of grace.

For non-Catholics, this book and podcast will prove that praying the rosary is not "praying to Mary" but a way to reach the fullness of understanding of Jesus by praying with Mary, our Heavenly Mother and advocate.

This book is meant to be a companion to the Rosary in a Year podcast. It includes the writings referenced in the podcast and the artwork (but not full page). It is helpful have the writings to refer to. The artwork is also helpful as a vocal description on the podcast can’t fully replace actually viewing it; however, the quality of the photos does not always allow one to see all the details. The comments on the photos and those on the podcast are not the same and are not necessarily related to each other. The book does not include any of the comments from the podcast. A large section of the book is devoted only to tell the reader what mysteries will be covered on the corresponding day on the podcast.

Though somewhat helpful, this book isn’t necessary to complete Rosary in a Year. I thought it would be useful to have the art images right at hand, but the Ascension app already has a way to expand the images in order to see details, and so I used the app most of the time.
