[Siren Erotic Romance, Alternative, Shapeshifters, Dragon Shifter, Fantasy, MM, HEA] The last dragon was slain years ago, but peace is still not established in the land of Elsotia. Baron Rohder Glimburg has just taken charge and plans to do things differently from his father, much to the disappointment of others. He wants to create the biggest army in the West to protect him from the historical threats of the East, at least what he sees as threats. Namely, his brother Fabius, lord of Tinguard Castle. Ambran Dreki’s business is struggling but that’s nothing new. When the Baron happens upon his little Inn in the shadows of the Eastern Mountains, he takes a shine to the owner. Which means, he wants to rip his clothes off and take him back to his castle. In fact, he’s willing to do whatever it takes to make that happen. But Ambran cannot be bought that easily and a power struggle ensues with devastating consequences.

A Joyfully Jay review.

2.5 stars

While the writing of this story was compelling in the sense of its prose and the relationship between Rohder and Ambran, the foundations in both the characters and the chapter structure were more unstable. Some of the chapters divided a scene unnecessarily or there was too much of a jump between them that confused me at first until I got some later context clues. Since I couldn’t get a sense of what method the author used to determine when to break for a new chapter, I found myself having to re-situate myself at the start of each one. It did not entirely ruin the reading experience for me, but it did stymie the flow enough to be bothersome. There is also the prologue, which I assume is supposed to tie in to some history mentioned in the main story, but I cannot be sure and it is yet another thing I couldn’t get a good sense of in terms of where it fits.

DNF This book wasn't for me. I couldnt get into the story. The characters are written in 3 person, told in alternate times for present to past scenes to the story, which wasn't my favourite.
