In a world where only women have the ability to possess magic, Ichi becomes the first male witch after taking down a legendary magik that cannot be killed by women, reverse Eowyn style.
This was a fun little introduction to this manga, setting up some key characters and premise. Fun art style that I enjoyed as well.
Kumugi is just so precious and needs to be protected at all costs.
It's a nice start, and obviously, the English volumes are not out yet, so I will review these and will switch to them once they are released. The art was nice, and I have the hunch that the story will get better as the story progresses. So let's go and Keep on Reading.
I have always loved comics, and I can and I have. I love comics to bits, may the comics never leave my side. I loved reading this and love reading more. You should also read what you love, and I hope you will always love it. Even though I grew up reading local Indian comics like Raj Comics, Diamond Comics, or even Manoj Comics, now's the time to catch up on international and classic comics, Mangas, Mahwas, and Graphic novels. I am on my quest to read as many comics as I just want to Keep on Reading.
I’m convinced that the second this manga gets an anime adaptation it’s going to dominate the shonen genre. The official English volumes haven’t even released yet and it’s ALREADY got a lot of buzz around it—and trust me it’s deserved. The art is gorgeous and I love these characters, the setting, and the entire story concept SO much. I definitely don’t think the first volume is bad, but will acknowledge the introduction is mostly just cute. I need you to trust me rn. This goes crazy. I am dying on this hill with my beautiful son Ichi.
A pretty fun read, if Kagurabachi is peak edgyness then ichi the witch is peak wholesomeness of shonen jump. The premise and plot are lowkey simple but it's still have some charm to hook you in.
YES!!! welcome back shonen written by women 😫😫 saw that this was getting popular, decided to check it out and had a GREAT time. The magic hierarchy did make me giggle with all the men at the bottom (barring Ichi). Gorgeous art, engaging character dynamics, and Desscaras (I love her). More female mentor characters in action mangas PLEASE😝

Effortlessly efficient world and character building, highly-polished art and well-done humor are the prima materia that conjure up one of the best shonen debuts of 2024.
Ichi has grown up as feral after his parents abandoned him. He’s learned to survive in harsh conditions, and makes a living killing animals that threaten humans. On one hunting mission he comes across a strange creature. It turns out to be King Uroro, the greates majik in the world.
Majiks are living manifestations of special powers. When defeated in a manner defined by the majik, the power goes to the hunter. These people are called witches. Only women can be wiches, as men don’t have the aptitude for magic. Uroro hasn’t been bested in a thousand years though, because he has set a cunning rule: he can only be defeated by a man. By a chance, Ichi does exactly that and becomes the first male witch ever.
This was a fun start to a series. Ichi is clueless and eager, but he has a strict rule about who and what he kills. When he gains majik powers he tries not to let the power corrupt him. The witches are chaotic and fun. They take Ichi into their organisation and send him out to kill human-killing majiks. But there’s another side to their hunts, as Uroro points out. Majiks are the indigenous people and witches are aggressors who kill them. I’m guessing some things are about to change now that Ichi is there. I’d read more. Art was good.
I received a free copy from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.
If you’re looking for a manga with humor, heart, and a fast paced plot, then pick this up!
Ichi, has lived alone in the wild and has learned how to survive on his own. He comes across a powerful majik, and unknowingly possesses his power after defeating it. Only witches are able to defeat majiks, and all witches are women. That is, until Ichi. He now becomes the only male witch and sets out to hunt other majiks.
The interactions between Ichi, Desscaras, and Kumugi are so funny. You can’t help but be charmed by all of them. The dynamic between the characters is the highlight for me. Although I enjoyed the art style, I did feel there were some parts that were harder to make out and made me pause to figure out what was being shown. Other than that, this was a fast and fun read. It was a great introduction to the characters and the world. I’m definitely looking forward to going on more hunts with Ichi.
Thank you to NetGalley and VIZ Media for the advanced copy.

Ichi the Witch, Vol. 1 introduces us to Ichi, a self-taught survivalist and skilled hunter who has been independent since childhood. Loved by his village, Ichi’s life takes a dramatic turn during a journey into the mountains when he encounters Desscares, one of the most powerful witches, locked in conflict with a majik.
In this world, majiks are physical manifestations of living magic, hunted by witches to obtain their power. Traditionally, only women can become witches by acquiring majik, but there’s an extremely rare 0.001% chance for a man to become a witch if he defeats a specific majik,Uroro. Against all odds, Ichi does just that, becoming a male witch.
To avoid being treated like a test subject, Ichi teams up with Desscares. They strike a deal: he’ll help hunt majiks, and in return, she’ll keep others off his back. From there, the story opens up into a fast-paced, magical adventure filled with spellcasting, eccentric witches, and plenty of high-energy, comedic moments.
I especially like Desscares’ character design and her dynamic with Ichi, their boss and reluctant partner relationship is entertaining. With its lively tone, inventive magic system, and strong character chemistry, Ichi the Witch, Vol. 1 sets up an exciting series that I look forward to continue especially to learn more about Desscares. As of right now I'm glad this manga isn't a harem and unlikely to become one despite the heavily dominated additional female cast. Also the story seems wholesome.
I both love and hate this manga. I really like Ichi as a character. He is very clear in his wants. He loves to hunt and all he longs to do is to hunt animals if they are going to bring any harm to those he cares about. I also love the witches. His integration into their world is very interesting. So over all I really love the plot, what I didn’t love was the execution. Sometimes the pictures were confusing and didn’t allow me to follow with what was happening in the story. This happened a couple of times. I don’t know if it was because I was reading this book on my tablet and if the pictures will be clearer once it is in print, but I struggled a couple of times. That being said I would love to read more of Ichi’s adventures, because this is only the beginning for him. Thank you to Viz Media and Netgalley for allowing me to read an advance copy of this title.
S/O and TY to Netgalley and the publisher VIZ Media for the eARC of this title.
This is a fast paced fun start to the Ichi the Witch series. A compelling living magic system and immediate stakes for the title character make you want to keep reading. The artwork is also really dynamic. The character tropes will be familiar to anyone who has read a shonen story before but this one still feels unique enough to explore. The blend of action and comedy along with Ichi’s unique approach to Majik hunting made this a really enjoyable read and I look forward to more volumes in this series.
I’d recommend this title to readers who like monster-of-the-week adventures, rising stakes, and chosen one stories.
Volume one in Ichi the Witch was a vivid and active manga tale. The sheer blood-thirsty nature of Ichi was revelatory. He did live in harmony with nature on his mountaintop but was fully ready to kill when he needed to or when he sensed a violent instinct in another creature. Ichi is beautifully drawn - a deceptively gorgeous killer. I think that many people are going to captivated and swept up in this story. There are hunters, witches, magical spirits and non-stop action.
One Extra Star Due to the Author being my namesake, although from two different languages, we still shared same cultural names for a while, Edo. Yes I in fact do read manga, manhwa and manhua and have a few comics under my belt as well, and here was one I had certain issues with, I could have pushed myself to go on with it and actually just enjoyed it for what it was but... nah.
Only female witches have had the abilities that Ichi now possesses because he took down some magik that no one else was able to do. Following Ichi's journey over the series will undoubtedly be a delight since the first one had a mix of humor. adventure, and heart.
The tests and trials remind me of one of my favorite witch manga- Witch Hat Atelier.
So the most powerful magic can't be defeated by the highly trained witches (all women), but can only be defeated by an untrained boy? Because the lesson here is that no matter how experienced, talented, and hardworking a woman is, she will always be worth less than the dumbest, youngest male. If I wanted that level of gross sexism, I would relive the 2016 election.
i mean i dislike the concept but the character design and artstyle isn't bad so far. i really wonder what the fascination is about men involving themselves in women's spaces. i mean i know it's so you can have a bunch of marketable women (if not some sort of harem) but. weird. just weird.
ichi. i would die for you. my little magic witch son. DESSCARAS IS SO BADASS AND I LOVE HER OMG. i love a good fantasy/magic system and a world where all wtiches are girls beside one??? yeah im eating it up
What a great start. The premise is good but what really stands out so far is the main character Ichi. He’s very likable and relatable. He’s very earnest in what he does and his behavior. I hope the story itself continues to be as good as this first volume.
