The spirited memoir of a Minnesota farm girl who became founding mother of the worldwide women's movement, Fraser recounts her Depression-era upbringing, the early days of the DFL Party and her career in government and in the non-profit sector. Fraser's story will inspire everyone who reads it. Introduction by Garrison Keillor.
This book is wonderful on so many levels. First, it's a candid biography of a Minnesota farm girl, Congressional wife, politician in her own right, and feminist activist. Second, its a gripping account of women's role in party politics in the DFL. Third, it's an informative account of the birth of international feminism and women in international development. And it's also a well written good read.
Although it got bogged down occasionally, this book was basically fascinating and inspiring. Arvonne Fraser was an active participant in both the transformation of politics in Minnesota from the mid 40's to the mid 70's and also in the feminist movement from the 60's onward. What a story she has to tell!
A really good book telling how one woman can make change. Farm girl to international political force. Easy and enjoyable read - especially if you are from Minnesota.
