“I wondered why would anybody be so evil to come and try to harm poor homeless folks in their sleep”
Last night, while I was walking on 14th street, I saw Leo sitting on a bench selling his memoir. We talked about his book for a bit and I started reading it on my way home and finished it in one sitting.
Leo tell his story in vignettes. The stories he shares are heartbreaking and really make you lose a little bit of faith in humanity. The way he’s been treated for his condition, for existing, is actually cruel. He also shares some good moments, though rare, emphasize the importance of empathy for people who tend to be invisible in our society.

On a hazy, hot Sunday morning, I met author, Leo Gnawa, at my local flea market. Equipped with a simple foldout table and well printed sign, he was selling copies of his self published memoir. Interested in learning more about what it’s like to be homeless, I bought a copy. Mr. Gnawa even offered to sign it for me.
As others have said, his book is in need of some editing, but considering the circumstances, I don’t hold it against him or his book.
Gnawa offers a much needed perspective. Sadly, I was not shocked by anything he wrote. America treats its poor horribly, and its homeless even worse. However, I did learn that the rates of drug use and mental illness were much lower for the homeless population than I once thought. And, it reaffirmed my beliefs around housing being a human right.
Anyway, I wish Gnawa the best and, I think with some professional editing and structuring, Homeless Lives Matter could gain a lot of traction. It is a thoughtful, heart wrenching book that shines a light on the richest nation’s most shameful problem (that is that ANYONE in the US is without a roof, four walls, and a bed).

Leo's story is an wonderfully authentic portrayal of homeless life in Washington D.C.
