Jonah’s Compass is book one in the Delta Force Team Panther series by Annabella Stone. This is my very first book by this author. It is a MM romantic suspense. I randomly found this book while scrolling and was intrigued by the blurb.
Jonah Montgomery and Matt Garrett first met when Jonah was trying out for a position as sniper on the special ops Team Panther. They both felt the pull immediately but both worked hard at denying it. The military position at that time was don’t ask, don’t tell. They eventually gave in and fell in love, spending five years in a committed, secret relationship. Until Matt was captured. After his rescue, Matt was struggling and finally left. Now five years later, with the entire team out of the military, Matt and Jonah haven’t seen each other since Matt left. Jonah, who always had amazing musical skills, is a country music artist. But a terrorist wanting revenge tries to take Jonah out sending Matt to his bed side with hopes of a second chance.
Yes, that’s a lot of information. And that’s just in the first twenty percent! Things really started out fast and furious with this book and I realize she had a lot of ground to cover to bring us to the present but it was just a little confusing skipping so fast through their history. There weren’t any labels, letting us know how many years were being skipped. We just had to kind of stop and pause to figure it out. But it was all necessary to get to present time.
I really loved Matt and Jonah together. And since this is the first book of the series, the author took time to introduce us to the rest of the team with little snippets to intrigue us for their own books. The team reunites to figure out what is going on with the attempt on Jonah’s life which leads to so much more.
This was fast paced, steamy and also sweet. There were a LOT of details, though. A lot of places and names when they were out of the country that after awhile got a bit confusing and I skimmed a little bit. Matt and Jonah’s story as a couple has a HEA but part of the ongoing story line will continue in the next book with a new couple which will be Steele and Kalon’s book, Tied Up in Steele.
The whole book is based on two adults' inability to communicate their feelings and one huge guilt trip. Unfortunately I was not in a mood for that! So I will pass.
I’m so disappointed with this book that I’m going to break my rule of not rating DNFs. Miscommunication, unnatural dialogue, unrealistic characterization, Special Forces operators with the inner dialogue of lovesick teenagers (but don’t worry, their masculinity is safe because they keep telling themselves to “stop being a pussy” and to not “blush like a girl”), nonexistent editing...you name it, this book had it all. I lasted as long as I did only because the premise and plot were just right up my alley, even if the execution wasn’t, and I very much wanted this series to work. It was the blatant miscommunication that finally broke the spell, there isn’t much more frustrating than two adults pining for and throwing tantrums at each other when having a mature and honest conversation would solve 80% of their problems. What a waste of potential.
This was a good start for a debut author. I enjoyed all the characters introduced, and look forward to all their stories. However, for a 500 + pages, there was just something lacking for me. The relationship part of the story seemed stunted. I wanted more backstory and more communication between Matt and Jonah. It was just they were separated for so long and then BAM they were back together. There was no fighting, hurt feelings, or why did you leaves? It was explained later, but was very anticlimactic. There is a big bad out to kill Jonah, but this plotline is also unresolved at the end. There was also some editing issues. It was enough to keep me curious for the next one.
My smut sister Kelsey has been trying to get me to read this for as long as I’ve known her. I have to say this recommendation was spot on. My only regret is that I waited so long to read my besties favorite couple.
Jonah and Matt meet on Team Panther, these two fight the pull they feel to each other because of Don’t ask, don’t tell. They don’t want to risk their careers, so they hide their relationship. Not even telling the team, with whom they are deeply bonded with.
After a mission goes wrong, their lives crumble. They lose the careers they fought to keep and eventually Matt walks away.
Time jump- Five years later, Matt is working for BW security company and our boy Jonah is a famous country music singer.
Matt rushes back to Jonah’s side when he gets attacked at his home. Jonah is restless at the hospital and Matt is just what the doctor orders. Jonah being targeted brings the whole panther team back together, minus one missing brother Steele. Now the team has to track down Steele and find out who is after Jonah.
This book was so amazing. I loved Jonah’s and Matt’s story. All of the characters are so thought out and I’ve loved getting to learn about team panther. I just loved Betty and Matt’s dad. If you love MM romance and military romance, this is the book for you.
I have to thank you Kels. I love team panther and I am so excited to continue this series. Got to get to my boy Jason’s book. Thank you for sharing your Jonah with me.
An entertaining tale about Jonah an ex Army Vet turned Country Music Star and Matt an ex Army Vet turned secret agent/black ops/private security expert , their 5 years separation and a second chance of love. It is also about friendship bonds , acceptance and forgiveness.
Even though is set and occurs in and out of a war zones , deals with PTSD and other sensitive subjects this isn't a heavy, deep or/sad story . On the contrary it is written in a very light hearted and humorous tone , have lots of snarky banter and ends with a well deserved HEA.
This is book 1 of a series that follow a group of ex army vets , it seems each book will focus on a different couple with all the stories interconnecting.
In conclusion : an uncomplicated easy read, I enjoyed it.
A copy of #Jonah's Compass by #Annabella Stone provided by #LesCourtServices in exchange for an honest review.
This is a great book that would have been 4+ stars if it had not been for the editing.
Poor comma placement, missing quotation marks, heaps-o-heaps-o-homophones and some repeated misspellings interrupted the flow.
It didn't keep me from reading it, and I'll continue the series, but *shrug* it makes me feel... underestimated as a reader when there's this many issues with basic grammar, etc.
I also had some niggles about some of the military aspects. The details were off here and there, but only by inches, not by miles so I was able to shrug it off.
So... 3.25 stars for an otherwise excellent read, with the right amount of angst, realistic conflicts/resolutions, good chemistry, all the feelz, hot smexy times, great secondaries, and an overarching plotline with legs.
I just finished reading Jonah's Compass by Annabella Stone. It was her debut book and I was pleasantly surprised.
Jonah and Matt were in the Army together during the years of Don't Ask, Don't Tell. Thus, they kept their relationship a secret, even from the others in their unit. But, when Matt is captured, everything changes. Their secret comes out and they are forced out of the army. When they returned home to their apartment, it wasn't long before Matt left without a word. Five years later and they are reunited when Jonah's life is being targeted. This brings back the whole team for fight together again. And Jonah and Matt can get their 2nd Chance together if they are willing to do so.
I really enjoyed this story. I loved Matt and Jonah. They are truly a sweet, loving couple. I love how they can ground the other and create peace for each other. Their unit provided lots of brotherly moments, and some good laughs. The combat action, which is usually something I don't like, was quick enough that I did enough it. And it included some very sweet moments too. And the suspense of who to trust vs not trust was very well done.
Overall, I am thrilled to have discovered this book and this new author. And I am anxiously awaiting the next book in the series.
This is my first exposure to this author so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I like that for a military themed book, it had a good chunk of action. And I really enjoyed that part. But that said, I think the author was rather ambitious, with a full cast and more of people. Too many people! But the thing was, I wasn’t confused much so perhaps she pulled that off well. But it did feel like it was too much sometimes.
Also, the plot...there was a lot happening. And I do mean a lot. Or perhaps I just wasn’t expecting it because nowhere does it say Jonah ends up as a country music star and then some. I guess in a way it felt a little over the top for me? Dunno... can’t quite put my finger on it 🤷🏻♀️
But all said and done, i enjoyed it. I just wish it was slowed down a bit with so many people and so many things happening. The rate of change was too great for my poor heart. Lol... oh, and Matt and Jonah, while I understand their feelings for one another, I feel like they made up way too quickly and easily.
Hmm... perhaps that was what I needed from this book, the emotional depth. I didn’t quite feel it here... welp, all said and done, a good start to the series. Definitely looking forward to the next instalment. Hoping it gets better! 🤞
Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell! This is the rule that LGBTQ+ personnel used to abide in the military.
Jonah and Matt had been in a relationship for a few years when the unthinkable happened. Matt got captured during one of their missions and kept captive for four days before his team found and rescued him. In his relief and anguish, Jonah outed them both in front of their COs which led to them being court martialed. Matt hurt and left Jonah.
Jonah, not surprisingly, became a country singer. Matt joined a private security firm in order to move on. But neither had really moved on with their lives. Neither had been in contact with each other.
Now it seems like someone is out to get Jonah, and it is up to him, Matt and their old team to find out who and why. This is a trope I truly love, I love the action and the love story in it. Ms. Annabella Stone was able to incorporate missions, black ops, espionage, betrayal, friendship, camaraderie, love, funny moments and family in this story. My heart broke when Jonah and Matt had to go through what they did. But I think whta is important is that they found out what they truly meant to each other. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
There's a line in a Garth Brooks song..."when you're free to love anyone you choose." Matt and Jonah both Delta Force soldiers, didn't have that freedom at least while they were still in the service. A slip of the tongue during a rescue ended both of their careers and eventually their relationship. Now, five years down the line, they have a second chance to rekindle their love. Or will they walk away again after getting closure.
Jonah is a big country star and someone has taken a hit out on him. They almost succeed. When Team Panther is reassembled along with BW security, in order to protect Jonah it becomes apparent it's not just Jonah who is in the crosshairs. One of their own from Team Panther has been taken hostage in Afghanistan. It's now up to the Team to plan and execute an extraction.
This is a good action packed evenly paced military, MM romance. Matt and Jonah's love for each is poignant and captivating. All the characters are extremely likeable, funny, focused and interesting.
There is ZERO editing. Poor transitions, a major time jump from one paragraph to the next, wrong wording, the author keeps calling things puns when they aren't, choppy dialog, head jumping, and let's not forget that everything they feel is girly.
The storyline started out okay, but wasn't coherent or interesting enough for me to continue. I tried to ignore the messy writing, but I finally realized I was reading like I was grading a paper. It seems no effort was made with this book. Even a beta reader or volunteer proofreader would have helped out here. This was my first read from this author so I don't know if the rest of the books are any better.
DNF. I have only not finished maybe 2 books in my entire adult life. This one makes 3. I tried I really did, I had such high hopes for this series, but, this reads like a high schooler wrote it. The maturity level of the characters is embarrassingly juvenile. There are so many random plot turns, I felt like I was being gaslit.
The initial handful of chapters were jump cuts in time and while it was good to get a more thorough back story for the couple (and their team) it felt disjointed compared to the rest of book (which spanned several days). Some editing errors, but not enough to throw me out of the tale.
What did throw me out was one particular plot point: Jonah's plane had a bedroom that was repeatedly said to be soundproof (as to make the sexy times more private when the rest of the guys were traveling with them)...and then near the end of the book Matt & Jonah were having a conversation with someone else through the closed door of said "soundproof" room. Yeah, I know it's a small complaint but don't make a big deal out of something and then toss it out the window when it's convenient.
That said, the characters were interesting and complicated and I liked that. Were I Jonah, I'd have made Matt grovel a bit more before forgiving him. Gonna put the next one on the TBR though after reading the preview and the summaries of the following books.
Awesome story!! Action packed complex story-line with amazing characters! This book hooked me from chapter one and i was committed to reading it way to late last night. This is the introduction to the series and these MC's specifically and the author did amazing work. Plot is well developed, characters are really flushed out and touchable and their emotions are compelling.
Jonah and Matt are so multi-dimensional that they will catch your heart-strings and keep you rooting for them. They are so steamy and creative that i laughed and cried with their characters.
This is book one of the Delta Force Team Panther series and i have already started on book two because this one was so good.
I was gifted this book from the LesCourt Author Services and i freely give my honest opinion and review.
I didn’t love this as much as everyone else seems to but it was still enjoyable. This is a second chance romance, and that aspect was done really well! I just wish we could’ve gotten a bit more of the flashbacks to Jonah and Matt falling in love the first time around.
That being said, the flashbacks that are there are well done and not distracting, and I enjoyed all the action throughout the story!
If you like military action and second chance romances then this series may be for you!
I got sucked into this story right from the beginning. Jonah and Matt's past is heartbreaking and I was invested in their journey and that of their team the whole way through. Their was plenty of action and adventure, highs and lows, wins and losses along the way. I can't wait to read the rest of the series. Highly recommend.
This turned out to be a disappointment. The story line had a lot of potential. One of my favourite genres, men doing men stuff with guns and mayhem. But this fell short. Firstly it needs editing, that's always annoying. Secondly, and this in my main beef, is that the dialogue is often juvenile. I cant see ex Army, special forces dialogue including the aww shucks, holy gosh type dialogue. It didn't ring true and the book was nearly DNF. Some of the situations felt contrived and unlikely. And lastly, the time lines gave me whip lash. One minute Matt is heading outside to follow Jonah and in the very next sentence they are laying the table. I had to flip back and forth to see if I'd missed a page. And a few loose ends eg: Dom's phone. Did Sarah have anything to do with it or not. One minute she's a suspect and the next she's a target. And what is all that with her preventing Jason from communicating with Jonah for 2 years? Events are raised and not finished, leaving you wondering if they will be addressed in another book, or just sloppy writing. This happened a few times throughout. There are some great authors out there who write excellent MM military, detective, spy type books, but I cant rate this as one of them. I wont be finishing this series, I'm sad to say. I was looking forward to another fabulous series to enjoy.
So, lets start with I liked the story. But there were things going on that I just didn't understand, or perhaps follow the logic. I just didn't grasp some things.
Now, grammar wasn't too bad. The most stand out thing to me is AM in the place of Uhm... like almost every irritating time. The other major WTF is the mulitple... MULITPLE random commas placed where they shouldn't be. And some punctuation missing at the end of sentences. And " missing at begin or end sometimes.
WORST of all, is when its no longer an issue and Jonah and Matt are back together, there is WAY TOO MUCH babe and baby. I don't mind the endearments, but they were really overused to me for the military kind of guy.
And another thing bothering me.. Fritz. I thought he was like a generation ahead of the guys, like father figure type. But then Jason has an interest in him, unbeknownst to the group. That would mean older/younger relationship (not my fav).
All of these make it hard pressed if I want to suffer thru more irritation and baby this baby that every other word or not....
Jonah Montgomery and Matt Garrett are part of the elite Team Panther. This team are more like brothers but Jonah and Matt find love. They keep this hidden but when Matt is captured Jonah slips and their relationship becomes exposed ending their army careers. Matt makes a choice to walk away. After five years someone comes after Jonah who ends up in the hospital and the company Matt works for is hired to keep Jonah safe! Jonah in his unconscious state feels Matt’s presence and calms down so the Dr insist he stays. When Jonah awakes they must overcome many challenges and this is their story. There are ups and downs. There is action and loyalty with friendship and the whole team is involved. I enjoyed this story and look forward to reading more with the other characters.
This is the first book in The Team Panther Series. What an sensational book the writing was great. The plot was entertaining and it was steady throughout the book. I found the story and characters intriguing. The characters were well developed and thought out. Jonah and Matt are the MC’s of this book. There was humor, special forces, travel, a hospital, a capture, PTSD, teammates, airplanes, country singer, NSA, CIA, family, betrayal and so much more in this book. This book has a finish but it also is open ended to continue to the next book so not all questions are answered. I enjoyed this book it kept my attention riveted. I can’t wait to read the next book. I can highly recommend as a great read. I voluntarily read an advance copy of this book for an honest review.
Jonah's Compass is the first novel for Annabella Stone. It is a MM military romance detailing the lives of a couple and their team of special forces operatives. I really enjoyed the author's take on two very masculine gay men, in the military during the controversial "don't ask, don't tell", and taking on PTSD and the affects it may have on a relationship. The mystery/action sequences made it a quick read as well. Looking forward to what comes next for the gang!
