A Delightful and Inspiring Journey Through Life’s Unexpected Turns Teri M Brown's 10 Little Rules for a Double-Butted Adventure hooked me from the start! This delightful read is a blend of memoir, inspiration, and practical guidance—a transformative roadmap for improving your life. Through engaging storytelling and insightful reflections, Brown takes readers on a deeply personal and universally relatable journey. With wit and wisdom, she reminds us that bravery isn't always about grand, sweeping gestures but often lies in our small, everyday choices. Whether at a crossroads or simply seeking a fresh perspective, this book offers encouragement, laughter, and a gentle nudge to step outside your comfort zone. It is a perfect read for anyone looking for inspiration, camaraderie, and a reminder that life's detours often lead to the most rewarding destinations.
A lot of people live under the rubric that life conditions us and forms us by teaching us fixed truths about ourselves. However, recent scientific discoveries have taught us that the brain continues to adapt (i.e., learn and re-form) throughout one’s entire life – a property called neuroplasticity. Therefore, our spiritual lives and self-image can grow so long as we live. Author Teri Brown and her new husband Bruce discovered this life principle as they remarried later in life. They share their inspirational tale of how they overcame obstacles to continue to grow – individually and together – while cycling across the United States.
This relatively new marriage allowed Teri to recover from a prior, unhealthy marriage. During the pandemic, they decided to fulfill one of Bruce’s life dreams – to ride across North America. Teri had to lose weight, strengthen her muscles, and learn to cycle long distances. In order to ride tandem, Bruce had to learn to adapt to a new cycler’s style. On top of that, they had to work with each other as a couple just starting their marriage. They embraced this adventure as one of the highlights of their lives and blogged about it. This book distills the life lessons they learned along the way.
Corresponding with a book series themed around “ten little rules,” this work packages their experiences in a series of life lessons. Each story conveys an inspirational message while providing a guided prompt for the reader to compose their own life application. As such, the book can serve as a journal to get the juices of your dreams going. The format facilitates readers to conjure up their own adventure.
Much inspirational literature rightly focus on inspiring children and young adults to make a big impact on the world. Often overlooked are older adults who have a lot to give but must overcome self-made excuses that hold us back. Through this book, Teri shows that we don’t need to let the excuses doom us. Instead, we can embark on learning’s journey by humbling ourselves with some gentle prompting. It will find a welcoming audience among adults who need a nudge to break out of old habits to embrace something new. Who knows? By perusing this brief tome, you might find your own adventure.
If you've ever stared at a life reset button and wondered whether you’re too tired, too late, or just too broken to press it—this book gently, stubbornly tells you otherwise. Teri M Brown’s memoir isn’t a declaration of triumph; it’s a rolling monologue of what it means to relearn yourself in motion. It’s filled with sweat, saddle woes, misgivings, and unexpected graces on a tandem bicycle that becomes less a vehicle and more a metaphor for interdependence, pacing, and rediscovery.
There’s something deeply satisfying in the way Brown narrates pain without spectacle and joy without smugness. Her voice is honest, often humorous, always humane. You won’t find carefully curated “life lessons” handed to you on polished plaques. What you get instead are small, lived-in truths gathered from trial and effort—the kind that sink in quietly and stay.
This isn’t a how-to for cycling. It’s a why-not for living. And sometimes, that’s all the permission we need.
Loved the book, loved the insights. Loved the growth and challenge. You and Bruce- truly amazing. Love you both. Thanks for sharing your adventure and how it has made you fearless to step outside your comfort zone. I hope you have many more adventures and watch your confidence grow ever stronger. Thanks for the encouragement you offer with this story which is like a microcosm of life. Happy Trails!
For two decades, commencing shortly before I turned 60, I cycled regularly at weekends, usually alone, exploring the countryside around my home – which changed twice during that period. I also harbor a dream of traveling across the USA from coast to coast, though not by bicycle! So a book about a couple who made that journey on a tandem was bound to pique my interest. What I didn't realize was that this is the latest in a series of books with titles beginning “Ten Little Rules . . .” As such it turned out to be yet another self-help book full of advice about life in general as well as the lessons to be learned from taking part in such an adventure. That does not mean I was disappointed. There was certainly less about the landscape and the people encountered on the way than I would have liked. Nevertheless it was gratifying to learn that, contrary to recent bad publicity, the majority of ordinary people who live in the world's richest country welcome strangers and offer assistance when needed. This is especially true of the members of the unidentified Church to which Ms Brown and her husband belong. It was also good to learn that she was in her mid-fifties and he almost 70 when they took on the challenge. Whilst he was an experienced cyclist she had never cycled. So there was a great deal of preparation required. She frequently felt that the task was beyond her. Nevertheless she battled through. As a result she has a lot to say about the importance of self-belief alongside the value of encouragement offered with sensitivity. My current home is surrounded by hills. Mostly gentle and certainly nothing to compare to the Rocky Mountains. But riding them I began to think about the different manner in which an optimist and a pessimist might approach such terrain. The optimist will climb a hill anticipating the magnificence of the view from the top and the exhilaration of the subsequent descent. A pessimist will descend a hill dreading the forthcoming climb out of the valley. In one of her 'rules' Terri says something similar, relating it to the ups and downs of daily life. At the end of each of the ten short chapters there are suggestions for the reader to consider how the 'rule' described can be applied to their own life, followed by space for them to make notes in response. I found these blank spaces a little irritating in the e-book version but the book is plainly meant to be purchased in print if the reader is to make the most of it. I have to admit that, had I realized the true nature of the book, I would not have requested it. At my age I am not the intended demographic for self-help books of any kind. I do believe, however, that the book is ideally suited to that market and deserves to succeed. For that reason I will award four stars. I received a free electronic copy of this book via Rosie Amber's review website and Bookfunnel.
A cross-country tandem bicycle ride that provoked many thoughts
“A double-butted adventure” is one done on a tandem bicycle. In this case, author Teri M. Brown and her husband Bruce decide to ride cross-country beginning in Astoria, Oregon, and ending in Washington, D.C., a trip of 3,100 miles and three months in duration. Their journey—an arduous one for a disabled man nearly seventy and an inexperienced cyclist of about 57—provides the framework for the book, however the life lessons learned are the core of why the book was written.
In the Introduction, Brown writes, “I wanted my own epic quest—something that would prove to my children, my friends, but mostly me, that I wasn’t finished, that my life wasn’t over, that my failed marriage didn’t define me. I wanted to prove to myself I was a capable woman with a whole lot more to give in this life.” And so she did—not only in making the long trek but also in conquering anxiety, fears, and doubts about her worthiness and honestly communicating them to her readers.
As we follow Brown on her lengthy ride, she admits that she once believed that “success lies along a straight line.” Yet, she adds, “despite overwhelming evidence this just simply is not true.” This realization is one she shares, along with learning to accept what can’t be changed: “the course of the road,” or, as she astutely says, “for every tailwind, we have a headwind. For every downhill, a hill goes up.” As she reveals to the reader, she was extremely anxious about cycling up the Lolo Pass before she arrived there, yet in hindsight, she realizes the following hills were also very steep and that her fears were overblown because she succeeded in conquering them.
Throughout the book, in addition to her tales of the journey, Brown asks the readers to answer questions about their goals, worries, approaches to life, and their future expectations. With a sensitive touch, she guides the reader to consider gentler and more effective viewpoints and to write about them on the pages provided. This workbook style is employed to great effect and forms a significant part of the book.
In her epilogue, Teri Brown writes, “My hope is one of these little lessons touched you, encouraging you to become—happier, healthier, sillier, braver, more serendipitous—whatever it is you most desire.” In this respect, the author has succeeded, sharing her intimate life and realizations and offering wise advice.
The Wishing Shelf Book Awards EDITORIAL REVIEW 10th December 2025 TITLE: 10 Little Rules for a Double-Butted Adventure AUTHOR: Teri M Brown
Star Rating: 5
‘An accessibly written, thought-provoking story of an author (and co.) cycling across the US on a tandem. Highly recommended!’ The Wishing Shelf
REVIEW I very much enjoyed this (sort of) travel book from the pen of Teri M. Brown. I know her work, having read her historical novel, An Enemy Like Me - which, I understand was a bronze medal winner in the Wishing Shelf Book Awards. But this offering is VERY different. In a nutshell, it follows the writer as she travels (on a bike; a tandem no less!) across the US. Insightful and often even thought-provoking, it’s not just a technical handbook on cycling – or travel for that matter; it’s more a story of self-discovery and personal growth. Now, I know that might sound a little wishy washy. But you know what? It’s not. And I enjoyed every page of it. There were a number of elements to this well-written book I particularly enjoyed. Firstly, the writing style is informal; almost chatty. As a result, she’s never condescending; it never feels like a lecture – more a chat in a café over a cup of coffee. Secondly, there are a lot of gems in here; titbits of wisdom which I suspect most readers will find interesting. For example, Rule 5, Focus on Now, I simply loved this: When people would ask us in complete amazement, “How is it possible to ride a tandem bike the entire way across the United States?” or “How will you climb over the Rockies?” Bruce would reply, “One pedal stroke at a time.” And thirdly, I think the author’s story is rather inspiring. To do what she (they) did is, well, amazing. So much so, it might motivate a few of us to have an ‘adventure’ too! So, if you happen to be on the hunt for an accessibly written book offering the reader insights into life, cycling, and travel, 10 Little Rules for a Double-Butted Adventure is for you. I think most readers will enjoy watching them overcome the many problems they face, and I suspect many of Teri M Brown’s musing will get them thinking too.
Brown takes readers on a heartfelt ride across the United States, unveiling the challenges of cycling and the transformative journey of self-discovery after divorce in her compelling memoir. Brown’s decision to embark on this cross-country adventure stemmed from a pivotal moment in her life and her now-husband Bruce’s long-held dream of cycling across America. Despite not having ridden a bike for fun since middle school, Brown embraced the challenge, motivated by Bruce’s enthusiasm and the promise of a shared journey. What began as a physical feat evolved into a path to healing, rebuilding confidence, and rediscovering self-worth.
Brimming with candid anecdotes and vivid imagery, the book blends the grit of adventure with the vulnerability of personal growth. Each challenge—from grueling climbs to moments of self-doubt—serves as a metaphor for life’s obstacles, making the narrative both relatable and inspiring. Brown’s prose is warm and authentic, and guided journaling prompts invite readers to reflect and apply her insights to their own lives.
At its core, the book is a deeply introspective journey. Each of the ten rules offers a stepping stone for navigating life’s unpredictability, urging readers to find joy even in fleeting moments. The dynamic between the author and her husband, marked by humor, respect, and mutual support, adds depth and warmth to the narrative. More than just a travel memoir, this book celebrates the human spirit’s adaptability and growth. Brown’s story will inspire readers to rewrite their own rules, embrace life’s challenges, and step boldly into their unique adventures.
Brown delivers a compelling and deeply personal narrative in her latest book, taking readers on a journey of resilience, self-discovery, and the courage to embrace life’s challenges. Rooted in the aftermath of a painful divorce, Brown's story begins with her desire to reclaim her self-worth and redefine her life. The tandem cycling adventure she undertook with her husband, Bruce, serves as both a literal and metaphorical exploration of life’s steep climbs and thrilling descents.
The book’s structure revolves around ten "rules," each offering a life lesson gleaned from the couple’s cross-country ride. From practical advice like "Expect Setbacks" to introspective reflections such as "Define Your Success," the rules blend pragmatic and philosophical insights. Brown’s voice is candid: Whether detailing the painstaking search for the perfect bike saddle or recounting moments of emotional vulnerability, she captures the complexities of growth and perseverance with unflinching honesty. Her reflections on resilience, partnership, and the art of letting go are both poignant and inspiring. The inclusion of journaling prompts at the end of each chapter encourages readers to examine their own lives through the lens of Brown’s hard-earned wisdom. A rewarding and motivational read for anyone looking to overcome adversity and rediscover their inner strength. Riveting!
I just finished reading Teri M. Brown’s saga of her trek across the country with her husband, Bruce. Unlike some other adventure chronicles I’ve read, like hiking the Appalachian Trail, I could not put this down and finished it in a day. Each chapter was an inspirational lesson on life. The only thing I found lacking was the photos along the way. This easy, quick read is a must for everyone. Thank you, Teri, for your inspiration.
I thoroughly enjoyed this well-told account of a couple trekking across the United States on tandem bicycle, and all the twists and turns one would expect from such a journey. With honest introspection that had me laughing out loud one moment and tearing up the next, I found inspiration and life takeaways on every page.
When I read Teri M Brown’s newly released non-fiction book, 10 Little Rules for a Double-Butted Adventure, I found so much more than I expected. I had heard the story of her and her late husband’s tandem bike trip across the United States to raise money for the Toys for Tots charity. This book is very inspirational. But reading the many obstacles they overcame, the joys they shared, while relating it to my life made this book very special to me. Read one rule at a time and savor each one. Think about how it applies to your life. Just the fact that two people of “a certain age” with not much training conquered this huge goal is enough to make you sit up and pay attention. But as you read, you will feel like you are along for the ride. Teri’s writing style puts you right there on the bike with her and Bruce. Their joy, tension, sweat and love flow through each of her words. Some of my favorite rules are Do Hard Things, Focus on Now, and Never Quit on a Bad Day. It was if Teri spoke directly to me, and I filled pages in my journal, working through my own thoughts on each one. This is a Double-Butted 5 Star Read!
