This story completely surprised me. It starts with two teens vanishing from Shanghai—already a gripping setup—but what unfolds is so much bigger. This isn’t just another “lost in space” adventure. It’s a layered, multistrand story where humans are only part of a cosmos.
It was intriguing how the narrative shifted between human and alien perspectives. You don’t just meet the alien species—you actually see the universe through their eyes. Each species has its own logic, goals, and way of perceiving existence, which makes the story feel genuinely otherworldly.
The mix of sci fi, fantasy, and metaphysical exploration is bold but beautifully handled. The story moves from personal survival and emotion to questions about existence and the vastness of the universe. The story follows two teens, Rick and Stella. They mysteriously vanish in Shanghai, only to be whisked away by an invisible spaceship. This unexpected twist sets the stage for an epic adventure filled with ancient, intelligent species and cryptic mysteries.
Rainio excels in creating a vivid and immersive world. The characters are relatable and well-developed, so I felt connected with their struggles and triumphs. As they navigate strange challenges and uncover the secrets of the universe, the narrative invites profound reflections on life and death, making it more than just a typical space adventure.
One of the flaws of the story is the writing style which heavily relies on exposition. The story could show the character’s emotions rather than just saying what Rick felt or that Stella’s mother was unhappy.
With its engaging plot and thought-provoking themes, "Discovery" is a captivating read that will leave YA fantasy fans eagerly anticipating the next chapter in this exciting saga. Highly recommended!

An unusual story. Starting off on a more modern day Earth, Rick & Stella are kidnapped by an alien vessel. They meet beings from 3 ancient civilisations, one benevolent & the others selfish & wanting their help to conquer & rule worlds & eventurlly the universe. Things work out for the best and they return home. 16 years later & with two Ricks. This is more like two books together. The lead up to how Rick & Stella are in the right place to be taken together is like one story & after they leave Earth is like another, with them both being brought together when they come back to where they left. There is lots for thought & detailed desdcriptions to get your imagination working so you can enjoy this book while wondering how things are going to work out.

This was a thrilling read, blending science fiction, space opera and fascinating fantasy elements. It has very a creative world-building, a multilayered plot, and plenty of unexpected twists. The story was so engaging that it captured me from the very beginning. Emphasis is on the protagonist's epic journey through space, their challenges, mysteries and encounters with intelligent aliens rather than heavy, constant battles. Great, thought provoking book about multiverse and everything we might find there...

This epic space opera was exceptionally emotional. The teens felt authentic and relatable, and their struggles and hopes really hit me. I loved how the book combined metaphysical depth, ancient alien species, and cosmic adventure into something both entertaining and moving. Fascinating and deeply emotional journey through space. Space opera with new, original and unexpected twists with exploration of deeper existential questions of humans' place in the infinite universe. Plot was exciting and multilayered although some parts were bit slow.
