How Heathcliff Stole Christmas is a cute novella about a robbery at Nevermore Bookshop. Quoth and Mina have volunteered the shop to host the annual Argleton Charity Christmas Tree. Villagers bring in presents for the local animal shelter and a charity calendar is made. But a couple days before Christmas, the tree goes missing and all the circumstantial evidence points to Heathcliff being the culprit. Paired with his grumpy personality going full force, Mina will have to find the real thief quickly to clear Heathcliff's name.
This was a quick and fun mystery. No murder this time, but I loved getting to see more of the guys and Mina. We see a lot of Quoth's vulnerable side in this novella, since the animal shelter is very important to him. The guys still have a bit of work to do in order to make this harem successful, but I think Heathcliff has taken a step in the right direction. He still has a lot of baggage over Cathy and he is slowly dealing with it.
I hope we get to see Mina do some more creative things throughout this series as well. I loved her Christmas present to everyone! I recommend reading this novella in between books 3 and 4.
This could be the most heartwarming Christmas story I've ever read! Mina and her boys have to solve a festive mystery, but this time, one of the suspects is Heathcliffe. Fantastic little tale with an amazing found family ❤️
Steffanie Holmes is amazing. I declare it here and now officially. If you can make a Christmas novella one of the best books, along with the other books in this series, I read lately, you're amazingly talented and good at what you do. It's a fact. Novella's are meant to be amusing, a little heartwarming, a treat for the fans. They are not supposed to make me cry because they're so well done and so well written.
The novella actually follows the same formula as all the other books in the series. There is some character growth, there are some emotional and very touching moments and there is this giant mystery that needs to be solved. I think this was the first one where I knew quite early on who might have done it, but that made it all the more enjoyable. Especially because this time the mystery wasn't a murder, but something way more innocent.
But, the mystery was not what this book was about. In a way the mystery of the stolen tree and presents was nothing but a backbone for the true story, the story of Heathcliff and Christmas and his trouble to sometimes express his emotions, the story if Mina and her head and heart, not always agreeing, and the story of Quoth, slowly finding his own place and worth in this world.
The development of the characters was so amazingly well done, that at some moment I was laughing and crying at the same time. This book touched something in me, even though it's May and even though the Christmas cheer is far away. This was so heartwarming and touching and lovely. Damn, what am I gonna do with my life once I finish this series?????
I’ve only read the first book before this one so a bit worried because Mina playing detective…not exactly Sherlock. I’m pretty sure Morrie already knows everything and he’s just sitting back watching things play out. I like both him and Quoth. Sweet at the end but the rest is accusations, grumpy Heathcliff and a strange mystery. Thankfully no murder on Christmas.
I absolutely loved this little novella and my favorite characters have really helped put me in the holiday spirit. I can’t wait to jump into the next book. I love Mina, Heathcliff, Morrie, and Quoth so much. Steffanie Holmes please keep up the amazing work. After I finish this series I plan to read everything else you’ve written. You’ve truly earned your place in my top 5 authors.
Such a cute little novella! I will say I didn’t realise this one is meant to be 3.5 so I’ve read it after reading all the others, but it would have been good to read it after the third book as it would have explained some things!
Sweet and cozy Christmas novella. I enjoyed it quite a bit, particularly because we still have a very grumpy Heathcliff that sulks and complains and is an absolute sweetheart deep down.
I would have loved to read this around Christmas but I didn’t want to wait that long to continue on with the series. I did however have a great time with this novella!
The Christmas mystery is cute. Guess I should have read it between book 3 and 4 but it's cute and it's not much plot so I didn't miss it to read book 4.
And it all becomes clear! The timeline oddity I commented about previously is fixed, because I didn't realise this extra novella fits in the middle of the series, rather than at the end! It's now in its proper spot on my bookshelf, and I'll know for next time! So now we hop back in time a little and catch a glimpse of our fab four spending their first Christmas together, but of course no event can pass within the wall of the Nevermore Bookshop without something of a shady nature coming to pass...
Even despite my mess up, reading this last has given me a lovely little send off for Nevermore, with the joyful images of Mina, Heathcliff, Morrie and Quoth having a slap up Christmas feast and a jolly good time. And, despite it being set during the first half of the series, because it doesn't pull on the strings of the wider series arc, it reads more like one of the later books, where the characters are more prevalent than the plot. It's definitely one I'll reread when I'm wanting to get into the Christmas spirit!
For all that this is a novella, it doesn't feel any different to reading one of the longer books in the series. The plot seems to have the same level of depth, the pacing feels just as even, and there's enough detail to draw you into the mystery without sacrificing the character building or the feel good nature of the series. And it's completely inkeeping with the tone of the series too - it might be set at Christmas, and the series might be lighthearted, but this is no fluff piece. Examining homelessness, the sad fact that January is usually boom time for animal shelters having to take in abandoned/unwanted Christmas presents, child neglect (in the abstract) and food poverty, it manages to slip in some things to seriously think about amongst the laughter and love.
The only thing that did occur to me was a missed opportunity - it would have been even cuter if one of the puppies belonging to Nevermore's accountant ended up being Oscar, Mina's guide dog. Just as a nice little way to tie another loop in the series.
I will seriously miss reading this series; it's been a pleasure and so, so easy to do! But the author has plenty more works to choose from, plus I'm signed up to her Patreon for even more bonus bits, so I shall hopefully never be too far away!
A little bit naughty, but oh so nice! This book has a way of walking the thin line between the two.
Grouchy Heathcliff is everyone’s idea of a Christmas Grinch, and his friends would agree to some extent. But when a crime occurs in his Nevermore Bookshop, the evidence is stacked against him. And once the town calls for his head, in the spirit of Christmas, Mina will do whatever she can to prove Heathcliff has a heart of gold under his rough exterior. Even if she herself has her own doubts to his innocence. With the help of Mina’s other two boyfriends, Quoth and Morrie, they will do their best to help solve the mystery.
First, I love the parody that is played with “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”. It’s one of my favorites to watch and read during the Holidays. This retelling-like version is done with some famous fictional characters which added a ‘who dun it’ mystery feel. I would say I am easily hooked to this book and author!
The characters are fun and play true to the aesthetic of the original fictional characters. And not only that, but the story itself had such great rhythm as you read it. Steffanie has a voice in her writing and a style that easily makes me want to return to her world. She is a great story teller in the way she has the characters interact with one another. And my favorite – the way she throws a shout out to herself in the book. I loved it!
Storyline wise, it gives a nod to the Dr. Seuss’ classic with a bit more of a murky-darkness element to it that I enjoy. It also has a steamy-smutty scene to kick off the whole race against the clock. The smut puts this book on my naughty list, but the sweet Holiday messages in this book clearly give it a spot on my nice list too.
After reading this book, I will easily be returning to Steffanie’s world she created to read the whole Nevermore Bookstore series. Not only that, but she has become one of my favorite authors this year. With lovable characters and a plot with love and mystery attached in a Christmas season setting, this book gets 5 phases from me! Can’t wait to dive into more from this wonderful author!
🌶️ This novella is adorably Christmas, with Quoth having volunteered the shop to host the village charity tree for the local animal rescue. Heathcliff is hating everything to do with the holidays and, in his typical fashion, is very outspoken about the deal. So when the charity tree and all the donated gifts go missing, Heathcliff is to blame.
With the whole village disgusted and devastated over the crime, the Nevermore shop is suddenly left without customers as the holiday grows closer. DI Hayes has given Mina and the gang 48-hours to produce another tree and return all of the donated gifts or Heathcliff will be arrested for the theft.
But who would steal donations for the animal shelter? There are several suspects to investigate and the clock quickly counting down to Christmas… can Mina trust when Heathcliff insists he’s innocent when his actions seem to prove otherwise? With Quoth ever be able to look at Heathcliff again without disappointment in his eyes as he pictures the shelter having to go without the desperately needed donations?
Of course it’s alls well that ends well, because what is a Christmas story without hope and love and miracles, right?
Just be sure to read this one between books 3 and 4 or the ending will be spoiled for you in book 4, and I believe it even comes up in book 5 as well.
A fun little Christmas novella of Mina and all the guys! This novella takes place right after the third book, Pride and Premeditation. It's chalk full of Christmas cheer and joy, with a mystery to boot. As usual, the mystery is well done, with several plausible suspects and high stakes— this time someone has stolen the Nevermore Bookstore Xmas tree, as well as all the presents donated by the residents of Argyleton for a local pet charity... and Heathcliff is the number one suspect! This creates some delicious tension between the residents of the Nevermore Bookstore, though of course it all works out in the end. There are some extra sweet moments between Mina and the guys as they spend their first Christmas together (and author Steffanie Holmes even manages one good spicy scene in there). Many of the familiar secondary characters, such as Mina's overbearing mother and her laughably lewd old schoolteacher, Mrs. Ellis. This is such a fun series! Don't miss this novella if you're a fan— and if you're not a fan, go pick up book 1, A Dead and Stormy Night, right now! It's a unique, well written mystery/paranormal romance. What could go wrong?
Very cute Christmas themed Nevermore Bookshop story. The whole gang is here, except for Jo who is on vacation, and a few new characters play a part in the great Christmas tree mystery.
Mina is in the Christmas spirit and has decorated the shop to the nines despite Heathcliff's bah humbug attitude. For some reason the grumpy bookstore owner has gotten even worse since the holiday season started. The extra large Christmas tree may have something to do with it, along with the gifts for Quoth's animal shelter that everyone in town is leaving under it. But when the tree and the gifts disappear one night, Mina seems to be the only one that doesn't believe that Grinch Heathcliff didn't take them. She sets out to find out what really happened, but than evidence seems to point at Heathcliff as the thief and she starts to lose faith. Can the real thief be found and Heathcliff exonerated? Or will the shelter's animals have to do without their Christmas cheer?
I was given an advanced copy of this book by the author. My review is voluntary.
Christmas is just days away and everyone is excited, except for Heathcliff, who hates the holiday. Quoth has volunteered to set up a charity tree for the local animal shelter in Nevermore Bookshop, where Argleton residents put donations for the animals in the shelter. Other than Heathcliff's grumpier than usual attitude, he is called Grinch on more than one occasion, Everything is going well. In the middle of the night all the donations are stolen from under the tree. It's time for Mina, Quoth, Morrie, and even Heathcliff, who swears he is not the one who stole the gifts, to investigate the crime. While Mina is mostly sure, um, pretty certain, that Heathclifff isn't responsible for the theft, most of the residents are all to ready to accuse him.
I love these characters, they make you laugh and bring tears to your eyes. Original, compelling and unique characters and a plot with surprises and unexpected twists. Fantastic, light hearted, Holiday mystery, and a must read. I loved it.
I am voluntarily leaving an honest and non-incentivized review of this ARC.
This was a cute little mystery involving the theft of the shop's Christmas tree. Heathcliff reluctantly agreed to let Mina and Quoth put a Christmas tree and decorations. It was for the animal shelter in he village and everyone donated and brings gifts for it. Heathcliff let it be known widely that he hated all things Christmas. So when the tree and all the gifts disappeared everyone automatically blamed Heathcliff. He said he didn't do it and Quoth is just upset because this cause is near and dear to his heart and he doesn't understand or believe Heathcliff didn't do it. Mina decides to investigate along with Morrie to clear Heathcliff. But she still wants to know why he hates Christmas so much and he won't tell her. This was a great little mystery and story. We get more background into Heathcliff's past. I voluntarily agreed to review this book. My review is my own honest opinion.
When the brightness and joy of Christmas seems to be gone again thanks to Heathcliff's grumpier than usual mood, the Christmas tree gone missing, and the charity gifts being stolen (let's forget Mina's mum's newest get-rich-quick scheme), even the relationships at Nevermore Bookshop are starting to get disturbed. However with faith and wits, every mystery can be solved... and saving the Christmas might come from the unexpected. Funny and light novella set into my favorite bookshop shows a little more of Heathcliff's thoughts and his broken soul, as well as how much his love for Mina means to him. The get-together is an important moment in their lives, especially after gentle, forgiving Quoth steps out of his stereotype and shows some claws and hard edges. Lightning fast read, entertaining and smile-inducing.
This was an unexpected holiday treat. You can never get to much of these characters.
It was fun to see them try to get Heathcliff into the Christmas spirit. Of course, there is lots of mess to deal with as her mom has a new business to promote and Morrie can't resist tormenting him.
When the tree and the gifts for the animal charity disappear, Heathcliff is the prime suspect. They have to work hard to save his him from being labeled a true Grinch.
Even with that hard task ahead of them, it doesn't stop them from having some fun too.
I highly recommend the series and am eager for the next book.
I don't know about anyone else but this series just captivates me. It's not all deep and series but it appeals to my love of books and literary characters. Not to mention the modern day twist of a reverse harem. Lucky Mina :)
For this short Christmas novella it doesn't lack at all. The main characters have another mystery to solve and this time poor Heathcliff is the one being accused of a crime that touches the towns heart and especially Quoth's. And....once again Stephanie Holmes has baffled my senses. I honestly did not see that coming. I join Heathcliff in his bah humbug mood for the holidays but totally LOVE and enjoyed this added addition to the Nevermore Bookshop mysteries.
This is such a fun Christmas novella. If you have not read any of Steffanie Holmes before know that this series is a paranormal mystery with lots of humor. Mina wants to decorate the bookshop. Heathcliff in his normal fashion is being a bit of a Scrooge about it. Their third Quoth, who I adore is the who is helps to set the holiday spirit alive and Mina happy and Heathcliff snarky. The shop is holding their first gift drive for the animal shelter and it is based around a giant tree in the shop, Guess who hates the tree? This quick, quirky ,fun romantic read is one that will remain on my Christmas book shelf for years to come.
We are having a intriguing time with Mina, Quoth, Morrie are trying to do something special this Christmas for the less fortunate animals in their town but for some reason unknown to Mina and Morrie Heathcliff has turned into the biggest Grinch in town. Then something awful happened and Heathcliff is being blamed even though he swears he is innocent, so Mina and the guys try to prove he didn't do anything wrong but they soon start to question whether he is being truthful. Great story line, love all the characters and their quirks. I was given a copy as a gift without obligation. I am providing an honest review.
Heathcliff is a real grouch, Grimalkin discovers the joys of catnip, Quoth is on a mission to help the animals abandoned at the animal shelter, and there’s a freezing draft in the bookshop without any obvious cause. Oh, and Mina’s mum has a new scheme going with tinsel and other Christmas decorations.
It’s a fun exploration of the shop, town life and Heathcliff’s inner self – while solving a tree-snatching.
I had a problem with the italics as it messes with my eyes and head, making it difficult to read and enjoy the book. Authors and publishers: please consider the neurodivergent when making decisions about italics so books are accessible to all.
I love these funny quirky mysteries. This holiday novella brings us back to the most fun bookstore in story land. Grouchy grumpy Heathcliff hates Christmas, especially the giant charity tree Mina and Quoth put in the store. Not to mention all of the people bringing donations. Christmas is stressing Mina out, when Heathcliff is accused of stealing the tree and donations she has to prove he’s innocent. In the mean time the complicated relationship of Mina, Morrie, Heathcliff, and Quoth expands and solidifies. This twisty character driven story is a cool afternoon read.
How Heathcliff Stole Christmas by Steffanie Holmes is part of the Nevermore Bookshop Mysteries Series...but this is the Christmas addition to their little mystery town. I have read the previous books so it helped me to enjoy this one better. It is a quick read that stirs the hotness around for Wilhelmina 'Mina' Wilde and her men. I have enjoyed this series so this was a nice little Christmas surprise.
This series starts so well and moves so fast that I can't stop reading them. I also want to point out that the author has been updating the covers to something so much more beautiful than the originals.
This is a good tale about our book boyfriends being alive. It is a reverse harem. However, it has a story not just spice, which I prefer. This series is not fully stand alone. Each book has it's own mystery that is resolved by the end of each book. I recommend reading these in order.
If you were to give this a try, you would laugh, squirm, guffaw in shock and generally have a good time.
This probably would have been better in some regards if I'd read this a month ago... but it is what it is. I didn't even know this series existed a month ago.
I'm going to say I'm 2.5/4 on the mysteries at this point. I didn't figure it out before anything had happened this time, at least, but I did figure it out before the characters did.
This was definitely a cute little Christmas episode of a novella.
A Christmas-themed novella. Heathcliff is being horrible about Christmas, making everyone else angry and sad. Mina volunteered the bookshop to host the animal shelter’s Christmas tree and collect the presents for the shelter, but the tree and gifts are stolen. Everyone suspects Heathcliff, and Mina, Morrie, and Quoth have to investigate and figure out what happened to save Heathcliff’s reputation. Fun and quick read.
