Fight for justice with swashbuckling soldiers in this abridged retelling of The Three Musketeers, part of the bestselling Classic Starts® series that has sold more than 8 million copies!
“All for one and one for all!” Aramis, Athos, and Porthos make up the three Musketeers. Oh, and there’s also the not-quite-yet Musketeer D’Artagnan. Together, the four men must use their wits and their swords to battle an evil Cardinal, the traitorous Milady, and other enemies of the French court. This abridged retelling is the perfect way to introduce young readers to the adventurous world of historical romance and the royal French court.
This very abridged retelling makes the story confusing, since much of the backstory and character development that help to explain the intrigue and plot twists are left out. So the story becomes a lot of odd events happening without much explanation.
However, my 6-year-old liked the cover and wanted me to read it to him, so of course I did - and he grasped more of the plot than I would have expected. He was mainly concerned with when D'Artagnan would get to become a Musketeer like his friends, and he was very excited when (spoiler alert!) the group finally became the four Musketeers!
An extra star since my child was happy with it, which I suppose is the whole point of these Classic Starts books!
Yes, I'm the idiot who accidentally bought the children's version of The Three Musketeers. I have since bought the unabridged version, but I thought I would read this just to get the basic plot points down.
It is dry with all telling and now showing, but it did make me look forward to reading the full book. Meanwhile, I'll pass this on to someone else.
