This very abridged retelling makes the story confusing, since much of the backstory and character development that help to explain the intrigue and plot twists are left out. So the story becomes a lot of odd events happening without much explanation.

However, my 6-year-old liked the cover and wanted me to read it to him, so of course I did - and he grasped more of the plot than I would have expected. He was mainly concerned with when D'Artagnan would get to become a Musketeer like his friends, and he was very excited when (spoiler alert!) the group finally became the four Musketeers!

An extra star since my child was happy with it, which I suppose is the whole point of these Classic Starts books!

Yes, I'm the idiot who accidentally bought the children's version of The Three Musketeers. I have since bought the unabridged version, but I thought I would read this just to get the basic plot points down.

It is dry with all telling and now showing, but it did make me look forward to reading the full book. Meanwhile, I'll pass this on to someone else.

Consistently surprised throughout that the book shared the same energy as most of David Ayer's cop dramas.

The writing of this re-telling isn’t anything special, but it did follow a grand adventure.

Need to try a different classic in this series, one that I am more familiar with. This one would require too much explanation to a young audience.
