Rate this book
What if chronic pain isn't a sign of damage or illness?

What if it's simply a misunderstanding by your over-protective brain about the condition of your body?

In Pain Free You, Dan Buglio shares how the brain's perception of either danger or safety is the direct switch that turns pain and other symptoms on or off. With this new understanding, you will learn how to finally reverse the chronic pain or ailments you've been suffering from.

By overcoming 13 years of chronic back pain and sciatica and spending over 25 years researching mind-body recovery, Buglio has become a leading expert in the space. He has coached over 2,000 individuals directly through these concepts and helped many thousands more through over 5 years of posting daily online videos teaching these concepts. He has now amassed a worldwide audience of over 50,000 subscribers and counting.

The real-life experiences and feedback shared by his clients and viewers enable Buglio to continually adapt, refine, and improve his approach to recovery. But even as the world of mind-body connections grows, one concept always rings you can simplify a seemingly complex problem and make recovery accessible. And Pain Free You can show you how.

In Pain Free You, you'll root cause of pain and symptoms and why they become chronicThe wide variety of pain or symptoms that can be resolved with Buglio's approachHow to assess your symptoms to know if this approach will work for youThe simple solution to turn off your pain or symptoms once and for all

Dan has given me my life back! I first came across him on YouTube. My original diagnosis of CFS and Fibromyalgia left me housebound and bedbound at times for 8 yrs. I started watching his daily videos and decided to do his group coaching. That was the best decision I made. I went from walking 3 min three times a week and scared of going up and down my stairs, to walking at least 30 minutes a day, doing a tahitian dance class and lifting heavy weights three times a week.

But mostly I got my life back! I do normal things and get to do fun things with my family and grandkids and just live life.

Dan was super helpful and the most caring person I know! He really wants to help people get better! His book was really good and all he teaches is in there. I like that his approach is not complicated. I highly recommend it!

I’ve seen some of Dan’s videos over the years and have always appreciated how down-to-earth and accessible his message is. There is no doubt that he has helped many, many people to overcome TMS/PDP and to live fuller lives. I just wish he didn’t feel the need to criticize other mind-body practitioners who use alternative approaches. We’re all on the same team, man.

5 stars for content. Dan is a leader in the mind-body space and genuinely cares about helping people recover. Loads of free education on his YouTube. I’ve learned a ton from him and highly recommend anyone who’s had chronic pain or other symptoms check him out. Also wish more therapists and healthcare professionals understood these concepts.

I've been in a turmoil about what I now know as Perceived Pain for at least 15 years. Early bouts led to an appendectomy (with nothing wrong) several years of chiropractics, numerous physical therapists, mystified doctors (one laughed at the way I described my symptoms) and spinal surgery that made things far worse. If only I'd run across Dan Buglio (or John Sarno, Howard Schubiner, Alan Gordon and the Curable App then!)
I've read most of what's to read, watched countless podcasts, mostly through Curable, and am quite convinced that it is all PDP. However I needed something to stop my , "but, what if, maybe it's also…" so, although I can get myself to pain free, it's not gone.
BUT, Dan's book, which I just finished, will be the key to move on. I know that I have to learn to pretty much ignore the sensations. "Oh, are you there? I have something else to do than keep you company. Bye!"

Read Dan's book all the way through and then come back to the 6 Safety Strategies. I recommend that you pretty much ignore the introductory disclaimer, which I'm sure Dan's lawyer required, reminding us that Dan is not a certified medical professional.
Dan has done his research and worked and trained with a couple of the top doctors in this field. He's had years a working with pain sufferers and made over 2000 caring videos, learning from his interactions with and helping almost everyone who has come to him.
His simple message is, you can do this, without spending money on coaches, medications, surgeries, etc.

(Audio)
Note: all charts and written pieces referred to, are available as pdf’s.

This may well be the ONE! I feel like I’ve read so many books about TMS since 2020. All the Sarno books, Schubiner, Clark, Levine, Gordan, Schector, etc. etc. etc., but something resonated with me that I haven’t felt before. Dan Buglio reads the audio himself. This wasn’t my first encounter with DB, as having viewed a few daily videos and perused his website in the past. I’m not even sure I can attribute it to he himself…which many readers have stated. It was more the words that jumped out at me. Perceived danger pain PDP, DB’s TMS-PDP emphasis. I particularly appreciated the beginning of the book that totally acknowledged Dr. Sarno, as in some books he is not even alluded to, as though the entire philosophy started with that particular author.
The focus in this book is in the present. The reader does not have to dig into their past, regardless of how many years of therapy. The approach is NOW, and/or the now that might have impacted any chronic pain conditions, without reliving. I also find it very encouraging to understand more deeply that a day by day process is a flow. So much is simply acknowledging life.
The dedication of DB to provide an ongoing free daily video is precisely a commitment that is refreshing.
Not for everyone, and even I may change my feeling weeks from now, but at this moment I feel encouraged, and that feels good!

To the point

Been in this TMS world for over a year. It works and this is a very good, straightforward approach. Not all the way there but I can really say and know I'm vastly improving and feeling mentally and physically better.

I wish I could give more than five stars because Dan has truly changed my life.

After experiencing chronic fatigue for a number of years, I felt confused and angry as to why this had happened to me. I looked into other 'wellness coaches' but found that they were often overcomplicating things - and also trying to get you to spend so much money on their programs. Dan simplifies everything, and it was through his daily YouTube videos that I finally began to understand what chronic symptoms are all about. Dan often says that "perceived danger" causes symptoms and safety is the solution. If the fire alarm goes off but there's no fire, why would you freak out about the false alarm? This metaphor completely changed my perspective on chronic symptoms. He also says that because you have chronic symptoms that doesn't mean you're broken - your brain is simply turning on the symptoms in order to protect you and it's your job to teach the brain that you're actually safe.

By implementing what Dan teaches, I've been able to resume activity and dial down my fear. I couldn't be more grateful to him. This book sums up what he teaches for free in his YouTube videos. It's nice having all the lessons in one place and it's written in an easily understandable, helpful way. Thanks, Dan!

WOW WOW WOW this is so eye opening! Highly recommend for anyone dealing with mysterious chronic pain or anxiety or other weird symptoms. He also has a youtube page full of free information. He talks about "Perceived Danger Pain" (Also called TMS) but its basically your brain perceiving danger and making these symptoms appear as a way to protect you. He has a very easy approach to stop using your brain this way.

Don’t get me wrong, this book is fantastic and Dan has helped me for years via his YouTube videos. I think they are very helpful and the modern medical approach to chronic pain is too reductionist and biology focused. Dans ideas, which build on the ideas of others, are truly remarkable.
The one issue I have is that some diseases which cause chronic pain cannot be fixed by this method. Take trigeminal neuralgia, a neurological disease whereby improper electrical firing of the nerve causes pain (this is 100% known because ablating the nerve or making sure nothing is pressing on it will remove the pain). It’s not until you witness someone with this condition that u can understand telling them they are just perceiving danger is fundamentally incorrect. If someone has managed to recover from this with the help of dans ideas, I’d love to hear about it, but until then it’s immoral to argue. That is just my opinion.

Ultimately I believe the following. Keep in mind I have transverse myelitis and I’ve read a lot about pain. Today we understand pain is biopsychosocial, meaning there is an element of biology, psychology, and a social aspect. I believe that some diseases have a biological aspect that can’t be remedied by psychological or social methods. However some can. I think it all depends on a case by case basis. Again, this is just my thoughts and I’m likely incorrect as pain is a very broad thing.

Dan does a great job of conveying important concepts in a simple, digestible way. I agree that the most important part of healing involves signaling safety to the brain. I've seen several of his videos and his sincerity and passionate for helping people is so evident.

One thing I wish he emphasized more is that nervous system dysregulation causes real, physiological illness. I think this is something that's difficult for people to grasp. It's not about determining whether or not you have a "real" illness, but rather it's that our bodies have an innate ability to heal given the right conditions (when we truly feel safe).

The mind body connection applies to every chronic illness and condition. I've heard incredible stories of healing from people who have conditions that are said to be incurable (ex. terminal cancer). This doesn't mean that modern medicine is never necessary or helpful, but the mind body connection is always important. Never underestimate the power our brains have to help physically heal our bodies!

Thanks for a great book, Dan! Love your work!

Even one star is too much for a book from someone stating that Long Covid and ME/CFS are inexistent and just caused by too much stress. It's simply not correct, against science, doctors and thousands of research papers showing real physical damage from these conditions. Also it's very dangerous for patients following this approach and deriding millions of sufferers.

Really well written easy to read book. As a Therapist I am not sure I entirely agree with his “no need to go into the past” bit, but a really great book.

Interesting perspective. Stuff I already knew
will need to probably reread as a physical book to really work through the process. As with all self help, I found it repetitive and drawn out at times, but the general concept is useful

If the approach in this book did not work for you, that’s ok. For me, it did and did not. I appreciate his insights on chronic pain and safety. I also felt uneasy at times with the author’s level of certainty. A little bit of a red flag for me. It’s okay for different things to work for different people.
