She also deals with a relentless stalker, death, loss and a drastic change in her life. She finally gets to meet her father but that does not go as expected. She forms an unexpected alliance that keeps her alive and saves her time and time again. It seems like the more she tries to make things right, the worse they get.

A tale of the transformational impact of love

Book 2 of ‘Heart in Two’ was worth the wait. The whirlwind journey was characteristic of Book 1 but felt like so much more because I was so invested in Don and Lotus succeeding that much more.

I appreciate how they both grew through this journey. There were nail biting scenes with Dalu and Ghost. Lotus became more self-assured and confident in Book 2 which was a delight to see and her tenacity, bravery and resilience shone through. Although — as is characteristic of Yvonne’s writing — a lot of terrible things happened to her and it seemed for the first third of the book, Lotus tried to understand her place in the environment she found herself. I appreciate her introspection and the work she did on herself so she could understand herself better to be a better girlfriend to Don, friend and eventually mother to her son. With all the trauma that she has suffered I was grateful that she sought help to deal with the mental onslaught of it all, highlighting the need for mental wellness and healing.

Don was softer in Book 2 although he rose in the ranks to be the ultimate Alpha but I think that in itself shows character development. It shows the transformative power of love because Don was no longer living for the wolves but for Lotus and his son. The true power of forgiveness shone through for Don considering how volatile he was in Book 1 when it came to betrayal. It was great to be privy to his vulnerabilities and understanding his abandonment issues and how those translated in his relationships.

Lotus and Don’s love was honoured so beautifully. Lotus grew so much in the story and I love that she didn’t lose herself in the pursuit of being a perfect partner for Don and her stubbornness and cheekiness eventually led to everyone having a great ending.

The detailed account of how gangs work felt well-researched and the action in the story was believable.

The pacing could’ve been tighter as there were some chapters that didn’t move the plot forward and thus lengthened the book without adding anything to the story. The single POV storytelling also had its shortcomings as we couldn’t get a different view especially when it came to the gang dynamics. There was a chapter told from Hilton’s, Don’s cousin, POV, which although appreciated felt quite misplaced in the single POV story telling. The story could have benefited from a dual POV so we could understand what Don was actively going through instead of a passive retelling.

I think Lotus drinking during her pregnancy was a hard limit for me especially in the early stages of the book and the shots she would take ‘to calm her nerves’ was a major dent in terms of my opinion of her. There had to be some suspension of belief that the baby was born healthy with no issues.

The story is packed full of action, twists and turns that will have you at the edge of your seat. I think reading both books as a book club choice will lead to robust discussions about all the themes covered in the book. Ultimately this story is about love, family, mental wellness and delves into quite a detailed account of gangs and how they operate.

I’m secretly hoping and openly pleading for Hilton to get his own story because if there’s one thing Don taught us is that thugs deserve love too.

SPOILER ALERT!!

Lotus has grown a bit since the first book but she wouldn’t be herself if she didn’t make stupid decisions. Depressed, bored and full of regret she decides to go back to Cape Town to be with her man and unknowingly takes up a career in street politics. Becoming the ultimate spin doctor, Fikile Mbalula has nothing on her.

From the beginning Chelsea (I never liked her) goes on a successful campaign turning any and everyone against Lotus. I was really disappointed in Lotus’ mom in this book but this lead to an alliance and a friendship with the most unlikeliest character we’ve ever read about from this author.

Enter Griselda Blanco

I hardly write reviews so if I carry on I’ll end up narrating the entire book. Well done Yvonne, I really enjoyed this.

P.S: Lotus raises my BP as bad as she raises her Grandmother’s if not more

Hay marn, khanime ndinibalisele!

You’re dating Don—Cape Town’s most notorious gang leader. A man so dangerous, so protective, that he sends you away to keep you safe from the chaos of his world. At first, you understand; his silence is nothing new. But as the days turn into weeks, the silence gets deafening.

Dalu, your ex, swoops right in just when the loneliness starts to feel unbearable. He’s sweet, attentive, and available—a whole package deal with a family introduction in Joburg to seal the deal. Sure, his sex is meh—mediocre at best—but at least it’s something. And the man knows how to make you feel seen, which makes you wonder if settling wouldn’t be so bad.

But here’s the thing: Don isn’t just any man. He’s an Alpha, a blue-eyed devil who’s engraved himself so deeply into your soul that not even Dalu’s gifts, attention, or safe love can erase him from your thoughts. No matter how hard you try, that man owns you—and honestly? You’re not sure you even want to be free.

Just when you think you’re finally slipping out of Don’s clutches, he swoops right back into your life like the predator he is. Out of nowhere, he shows up to “check in” on you, leaving you dizzy with emotions. But alas, he can’t take you back just yet—a war is brewing in his world. Your guilt seeps into you, and before you know it, you’re dumping Dalu again. You can’t cheat on the man you love… again.

But Dalu? He’s not going down quietly. In a desperate attempt to cling to whatever scraps you’ve left him, he asks for one last meeting to “end things amicably.” And let’s be honest, we all know what that usually means, right? Wrong. Lotus constantly playing with Dalu’s feelings awakens something dark—something monstrous—that we didn’t even see coming in the first book. And this monster? He’s straight-up psychotic.

What do you even do when you wake up naked in your ex’s bed with no memory of how you got there? Do you confront him? Do you let it slide? Do you tell Don—the Alpha who owns your soul—or do you bury the whole thing and try to move on, even though deep down, you know you’ve been violated?

Well, let me tell you what Lotus does. The next morning, she wakes up, takes a shower, and heads back home, completely unsure of what her ex did to her. She keeps the violation to herself, locking it away in the dark corners of her mind. Even when Dalu sends her intimate pictures—proof of her vulnerability, proof of his violation—threatening to expose her to Don if she so much as breathes a word, she keeps quiet.

And life? It goes on, as if nothing happened. Except… we all know those secrets have a way of clawing their way back to the surface. Lotus, babes, what now?

You feel yourself spiraling, slipping into a depressive state. Every news report about the gang wars hits like a punch to the gut, leaving you panicked and consumed with worry for your baby daddy. What do you do? You pack your bags, leave behind a letter and some money for your mother and grandmother, and head back to Cape Town to find your man. You need to know he’s still breathing.

But when you arrive? The welcome is ice cold. Everyone around you, from his crew to your own best friend—who hasn’t returned a single call or text since you left—is giving you the cold shoulder. The place you once called home now feels like enemy territory.

Life in Cape Town isn’t all roses and unicorns. The Wolves are in the middle of a brutal war, and guess what? You might have had a hand in starting it—unknowingly, of course. Turns out, that one fateful evening with Dalu, when he drugged you and turned you into a canary singing the Wolves’ secrets, had bigger consequences than you ever imagined.

Now you’re back in the lion’s den, caught between guilt, heartbreak, and the fallout of your actions. Lotus, girl, what have you done?

In this book, we meet Tristan—Caleb’s younger brother—who joined the gang to settle a debt with the General. And guess what? He’s been assigned as your tail by none other than Alpha himself. But Tristan isn’t just some lackey following orders; oh no, this guy knows your secrets. And in true gangster fashion, he demands a favour in exchange for his silence. A favour that, of course, puts your life in danger. But don’t worry—he claims he’s got you covered, and for the most part, he does.

But is it really a secret when more than one person knows?

Caught in the sticky web of your own lies, it’s not just you who’s tangled anymore. Everyone close to Don—and fiercely loyal to him—keeps getting dragged into your mess. They’re constantly cleaning up after you, covering for you, and saving you at every turn. Before you know it, you’re working with them behind Alpha’s back, all in a desperate bid to protect him from truths that could destroy you both.

And let’s not forget Dalu. Oh, Dalu. That man has convinced himself the baby you’re carrying is his, and he’s not letting it go. Those cursed pictures he sent? They’ve unleashed chaos, forcing you to betray Don over and over again just to keep your secrets buried. Poor Hilton and even Elik gets roped into the lies too, whether they like it or not.

Lotus’ life is a whole circus. At this rate, the web’s going to snap, and when it does? Yho! I don’t even want to imagine the fallout.

Yvonne did not hold back in this book, and I’m so here for it! The sex scenes? Chef’s kiss—absolutely top-tier. The betrayal? Haibo, it was on another level entirely. Loyalty was tested over and over, but Lotus? My girl stood tall, even in the midst of chaos. Her character development was a masterpiece—everyone kept underestimating her, but she kept proving them wrong with every twist and turn. She betrayed Don so many times—sometimes to save herself without a care for who got burnt in the process, and other times to protect him from himself.

This book was a rollercoaster from start to finish! The twists, the turns, the oh-my-god-did-that-just-happen moments—it had me on the edge of my seat. A complete page-turner! I honestly think this is one of Yvonne’s best works, but hey, I’m open to being proven wrong.

We even got to see Fierce from The Y In Your Man Is Silent—and guess what? She’s still the same Fierce who blames everyone but her lying, cheating husband for his nonsense. And Chelsea? She tried to redeem herself, but even that felt shady because let’s be honest, it was more about getting closer to Caleb than actually caring about Lotus. Bitchy behaviour, if you ask me.

And then there’s Lotus’ mother. Haibo, that woman hid the truth from Lotus for so long, and when Lotus pulled the skeletons out of the closet, what did she do? Threw a tantrum and ran straight to Chelsea, the same person who had turned her back on Lotus. The betrayal in this book ran deep, y’all!

But let me just applaud Lotus real quick. Her growth was phenomenal, and her relationship with Hilton? Wow. It was easily one of the most beautiful parts of the story. Only Lotus could crack into Hilton’s shell and make her way onto his very exclusive list of people he genuinely cares about.

For the first time in a long time, I finished a book and felt completely content with its ending. Honestly, I’m tempted to reread it already. What a stunning, beautifully written story! Yvonne, you did the damn thing!

An emotional rollercoaster

From the start to finish, this book had me on the edge of my seat, constantly gripped by anxiety that something terrible might happen to Lotus. Yvonne took me through a whirlwind of emotions , yet left me with a heart full of satisfaction. I loved Hilton character and I wish to get to know him more. This was a brilliant read. Thank you Yvonne Maphosa

Lotus is the main female character. She can lie. She tells many lies throughout the series. She grew on me. I wouldn’t skip paragraphs. The time can jump days and weeks between paragraphs. Some of the cultural aspects are not American. It’s setting is South Africa. Alpha/Don is the main male character. He is part of a South African gang.

In book one she had been celibate for over a year. However, this didn’t fit this character actions as she needed male attention. She was very needy.

I like her calculating with Don to make his dreams come true. I liked her loyalty to Don.

I did not like how they portrayed grape. I believe it’s cultural (ie you placed yourself in that situation). I did not like how Lotus hid her grape from Don thru the entire story. She could have told him that she was drugged and grape. Initially I would have given a 3.5 rating. I read part of this multiple times so it deserved over a 3.5

After waiting for this one I was certainly not disappointed. Lotus becomes a proper gangster chick in this one driving the plot with a lot more vigor she really transforms into a wolf. The plot twists with the General, Dalu etc keep you expecting to find the main Character in a coffin. A little bit disappointed by Don not exhibiting the alpha aura he started with he is a bit soft and silent in this one ( the girls will love Lotus dominance). Its a thoroughly engaging and absorbing read fast paced and full of twist and turns.

I really enjoyed this book. I read it in two days. Lotus has grown so much from the first book. I loved how there wasn't much of Chelsea in this book as I felt she overshadowed Lotus in book one. The growth of the author is also visible. From the ending it doesn't seem to be book 3. I want more of Hilton. Loved him so much in this book.
