For those who loved the rustic charm of Legends and Lattes and the unlikely friendship of How to Train Your Dragon.
Cliona has always loved the wrong sea serpents, dragons, and daring to be different.
Her dwarven clan’s rigid beliefs have made her feel like an outcast all her life. But when a family wedding turns sour, she dares to speak her wild-hearted truth, shattering the last hold her clan has over her.
Between grief and relief, she finds peace tending seaweed and mending nets on a quiet kelp farm by the shore. For the first time, her life feels like her own. However, when word spreads that her clan is hunting a dragon for stealing their ancestral gem, she can’t help but try to stop them, only to learn they’ve taken the dragon’s valuable egg in retaliation.Determined to save the innocent creature, she snatches the egg and flees with a band of good-hearted smugglers.
With a fragile life in her hands, she seeks aid from a reclusive, and cranky, elven ranger rumored to understand such dangerous beasts. Because honestly, what in the blazes will she do if the thing hatches?
Discover the world of Larune where slice-of-life tales and furry (or scaly) companions offer friendship and comfort to the weary soul. For those who enjoy self-discovery, reflective moments, and low-stakes adventure in a charming, rustic setting.

Elayne began her writing journey long ago. What started as a creative escape slowly became a dream, then a passion, and now a full time career path over a decade later.
Whiskers and Wishes is her debut in a stand-alone series set in the world of Larune. Her cozy fantasies are like being wrapped up in a warm blanket with friendships, found family, animal companions, quests of the heart, and a splash of sentimentality. She often describes her books as "Middle Grade for adults."
She also enjoys drawing cartoons (more of which can be found on her website, as well as a FREE cozy short story through the newsletter), and travels the US with her husband in their van the Millennial Falcon.
Random find while looking for cozy fantasy reads and this gorgeous 😍 cover caught my eye 👁 immediately.
Had a good feeling the minute I opened it. I got immediately sucked into this world and didn't want to leave. Read this in between lulls while working and cursing real life for interrupting 😄.
Like with my other cozy loves, everything just feels so alive and so full here. Everything was crafted with care and I could feel the wider world 🌎 out there waiting to be brought to life and explored.
Cliona (love the name) was fun getting to know her and spending time with her on her journey to find a good life on her own terms.
Aster was so adorable 😍! My heart broke for her poor mother and I wanted to show those dwarves to a bottomless pit *glares*
There's humor, pulls at your heartstrings, friendship, and found family ❤️.
One of my favorite funny moments in the book was where Cliona told off her *insert any bad word* family! 😄 🤣. I would have followed her anywhere after that!.
Somehow missed this was part of a series (I blame the cute dragon cover for distracting me hehe).
Cliona has a heart to heart with her family about what she wants to do with her life and it doesn’t go as she’d hoped. She decides to leave it all behind and start over when she hears a dragon’s egg has been stolen. She has a deep love for animals and decided to rescue it even though she has no experience with baby dragons! She has tons of help behind her with her new found friends who also want to help in case the egg hatches before she’s found it a new home.
This novella was so cute, I loved reading about Cliona and the dragon! She was so driven to do what she loves even when she didn’t have the support she needed. The family she found was so heart warming and I loved the ending. I am a cozy fantasy fan for life!! The characters are warm and endearing, the writing is fun and easy, and it left me feeling happy. Can’t wait to read the next book in this little series!
I sort of had my doubts because the beginning part had my eyes glazing over a bit (probably just a me thing, really? A lot of chaotic ship things were happening and I was like "wut?") But it picks up quickly after that.
The main character was fun to watch do things, to the point where I wasn't mad at the book for taking 88 pages (basically half the book) to gibs me the dragon that was on the cover. That is a HIGH compliment from me I tell you what. It also helped that once the dragon came on the scene she was a delight to read, too. Like... friendly but not to the point where it felt little kiddish?
There were a lot of amazing side characters that didn't get much screen time but were pretty fun. (Elayne can we have a spinoff book for the gorgon potion guy pretty plz??)
Dragon Wagon Refuge is a heartwarming tale of magical animal conservation. Cliona is a dwarf raised on the sea, trained to work with wild sea serpents. Standard mountain dwarf culture is explored during a rocky visit to her ancestral clan's stronghold.
The animals of this world are great. Cliona is most familiar with the sea serpents at the start. As she gets involved with the titular dragon, she keeps notes on her observations. It feels like a more casual version of The Memoirs of Lady Trent by Marie Brennan. Magical creatures, but described in such a way that they feel real.
Dragon Wagon Refuge, by Elaine Griffith is a story for all ages. It lets people decide for themselves what is good, and what is right for themselves. The heroine, it could be you, loves animals and wants to stop people from hurting a beautiful, golden dragon. She is to late to stop the dragon from being hurt, but she finds her egg. What happens next in the story, is for you to find out by reading the book.
This was a Wounderful story of a Dwarven girl who's parents didn't fit in and left for the sea. Now the girl has grown up and though she loves her parents and life on the sea, she needs to fine her own path.
I really loved this book it just put a smile on my face and if you liked legends and latte this book was so cute and i loved the focus on dragons. This def had light quest vibes. I had a super fun time with this book and hope to read more by this author in the future!!!
