Another sequel that went above and beyond. I loved how Aldewin mirrored Quens journey from the first. Self contemplation and renewal of purpose because Quen inspires him to want to be worthy of her.

Plot: 5/5

"The Spring Dragon" by Natalie Wright, we are left following Aldewin several months after the transformation of Quen to bring back Ishna, the Winter Dragon, which awakened most other dragons as well. He his wallowing in despair from his loss of purpose, disillusionment of institutions he held dear, and Quen being torn from his reach. However, he is not without hope. Imbica is back and gathered Druvna's pod of hired hands to search for the Heart of Menaris. Ancient magic that just may assist with releasing Quen.

Prose/Dialogue: 4/5

The writing is very descriptive. Imaginative, with terms made for the story that give an majestic, eloquent feel. It lends to the epic scope of the story. However at times did feel repeative. Used or explained too often. The prose slowed me down in the first story, but I think that experience let me know where to start in what to expect from this sequel. It matched, but felt cleaner. Giving a better pace.
The narrative mostly follows Aldewin but does switch sometimes to Ishna and Quen.

The interaction between all characters felt realistic. They made sense in what they said, without any awkward pulls from the story. There was a time or two I felt initial feelings should have been stronger, but there were little quips or interactions that pulled it all in.

Characters: 5/5

There were so many characters that I enjoyed in this story. From the first, Aldewin, Imbica, Nivi the tiger. And introduced through this story, Yngvari, Omma, Aurixia. Even the villian, shocked, yet satisfying they were a part of the story. All had a clear backstory and motivation for being a part of the journey.

Character Development: 4/5

The first book was the discovery and awakening for Quen, this one is the contemplation and redemption of Aldewin. Her drive and sacrifice makes him want to be worthy of her, but he has only known how to inflict horror. It goes beyond him, Ishna is of similar spirit. Death and destruction her instinct to ensure survival before her long sleep. Quen imploring her to strive for better. Just with these two characters, plenty of character development to go along with the chase for the Heart. Loved their journeys. Some of where the characters choose to go, wasn't much of a revelation. There were one or two characters that were more so background. Their stories to be told later.. I hope.

Setting: 5/5

There were several locations. A backwater town, a ship traveling over seas, a journey through jungle, and snow. All clearly different, described well, and lent to the story.

Creativity: 5/5

While dragons aren't a new concept, I like how the author has tied their fates in with humans. Dragons can wipe them out, but as they have slept, the humans have risen in number and power. Giving challenge, as well as showing a ruthless side that gives cause to dragons wanting to wipe them from earth. However, with Quen being added in the mix, providing Ishna, currently the most powerful, contemplation if humans may be more intelligent and compassionate than they thought. The story is layered and complex. Done so through many different elements that are well put together.

Enjoyment: 5/5
I loved where the first story ended, and this one did well in picking it up. It felt grand on its own, different yet similar. I really enjoyed many of the characters interactions with each other. Especially loved many of the twists.

Overall: 33/35 94% A 5

Natalie, you have done it again!

The Spring Dragon is the second book in the Dragos Primeri series. Book one, Season of the Dragon, follows Quen who navigates newfound hurdles and growing power.

Aldewin, much like Quen in book one, navigates hurdle after hurdle to restore what he lost and unlock some insane secrets in the process.

The first book was incredible, but omg the second. Wow. The dual POV was, in my mind, crucial to the story line. It gave so much depth to the characters. I loved getting to know everyone on a deeper level, and feel all the more connected to them in the process.

The fantasy, world and character building were stellar. Easy to follow and not overwhelming, but extremely detailed and made sense timeline wise (Natalie you’re a wizard). The fight scenes had me on the edge of my seat.

This was EXCELLENT for the second book, and it’s set up wonderfully for the third. I’m SO excited to see how the story progresses. 🐉💗

ARC reader here & proud to write the first Goodreads revjew for "The Spring Dragon", the second book in the ongoing Dragos Primeri series!! WOW WOW WOW--I did not expect to be enraptured by this book as much as I was for the first one, "Season of the Dragon", but holy crap I think this beats book 1!! Unlike book 1, which is more of a bildungsroman tale featuring beloved FMC Quen, this book is more of a buddy adventure tale mixed with a redemption arc for our equally beloved MMC, Aldewin, whose budding romance with Quen was cut short in book 1. Book 2 offers alternating POVs between the human characters & the dragon characters, who since being awakened from their hibernation are inching front & center in the overarching narrative. I got so invested into Quen's story arc in book 1, so since she wasn't featured in here much, going into this one I did not expect to take much interest in the other characters. Thankful Natalie Wright proved me wrong--dragon romance IS sexy!!

The chapters in the first section were quite long (clocking in at about an hour each according to the Kindle app), so it took me a while to get through, but after that I breezed through it no problem. The last few chapters will keep you entangled longer than the vines & roots pulsating underneath the world of Menauld, yet will break your heart in all the beautiful ways. Already looking forward to book 3!! Brava to Natalie for another spectacular pièce de résistance!!!

Once again, I have nothing but a huge thanks to Natalie for entrusting me with an ARC of her upcoming book, the second of a series I immediately fell in love with!
And once again, I have nothing but the highest praise! The Spring Dragon was amazing!

I was mesmerized with the unique way Natalie wrote the POV of a dragon, the way she forged a language for these creatures! I am also amazed at the way she wrote those POVs with the "mental battle" between the two souls residing in Ishna! Brilliant and unique, really!

I also loved to get Aldewin's POV and backstory! Is there anything better than to understand more and more of other characters with each book?! Don't think so! ❤️ I loved the new characters that joined the pod (in a way 🤭) and I missed Rhoji and Eira and Mishny but can see how they might be coming into play in the next books 😊

I loved learning the way of the Dragos in this book and am already gutted that there is no book 3 to plunge into!

And the finale?! Brought tears to my eyes, really! 🥹

I am certainly keeping my eyes peeled for any announcements of an Autumn or Summer Dragon 😉 and if there's an ARC team open for any following Dragos Primeri, I'm in 100%!!! ❤️

4.5 rounded up

The Spring Dragon by Natalie Wright is the second book in the Dragos Primeri series.

First of all, bringing in a POV of the dragon was a perfect addition to this tale. It helped to expand the history of the dragons in a way that felt like a natural part of the story and not an info dump. And there is a lot of information to learn. Yet the intricate history is told in a way that keeps the story moving.
The quest-like feeling and the found family that Aldewin discovers throughout is great. Whether following them on the sea, in the Dreaming, or along the Ghost Forest it allows us to watch the development of their friendships and bonds. All the characters are richly shown in a way that gives us what feels like a stake in the action.
The ending left me highly anticipating the next book in the series.

Thank you to the author for the free copy in exchange for my honest review.

I’m not sure which book I liked more season of the dragon or the spring dragon!

Some of my favorite things:
Favorite quote: “Dewdrops kiss morning blooms, death gathers as the edges unfurl. Does he still love me?”
Also the interaction between Quen and Ishna on pg 405 is pure poetry.

My favorite thing about the book: dragon body language was so different,so right and I loved the tail thumps!

Favorite Character: I know she was very rarely in this book but I’m still a Quen girl! There’s something about her being lost in the void of another soul that was just so poetic and dreamy. I’m glad she got her body back though!

I have a feeling this will be my best 2025 read.Thankyou to the author who allowed me to get my hands on the pre release.

Last thing. I love the heaviness, font and page thickness. If you enjoy reading physical books this one was very satisfying!

Review of The Spring Dragon by Natalie Wright

Thank you to Natalie Wright for providing me with an ARC. All opinions are my own.

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5 stars)

If The Season of the Dragon was a gradual widening of the world through Quen’s perspective, then The Spring Dragon is an explosion of cultures, history, and breathtaking scope. This second installment in the Dragos Primeri series takes us beyond the Dynasty and follows Aldewin as he embarks on his own journey—one that starts with a simple mission to protect Nivi and fulfill a promise to Quen but quickly spirals into something far more fated.

We reunite with beloved characters from book one while also gaining a fresh perspective through the eyes of Ishna and the dragon kin. The addition of a dragon's point of view was absolutely stunning, adding an intricate new layer of world-building. Seeing the dragons’ culture, their methods of communication, and even their own romances elevated this story to another level.

The writing remains just as evocative and rich as the first book, bringing every landscape, every moment, and every emotion to life. While the pacing slows in some areas, it always feels purposeful, like a steady build toward something grand. The scale of this story is truly epic—a vast, immersive world that never feels overwhelming but instead invites readers to lose themselves in its depth.

I can’t wait to see where this series goes next. I hope, like many of the great fantasy epics, that we get to remain in this world for a long time, continuing to uncover its secrets, its cultures, and the fates of these unforgettable characters.

This is a fascinating and richly imagined addition to an epic fantasy universe, offering dense, intricate world-building. The second installment centers on Aldewin, who embarks on a desperate quest to recover the legendary Heart of Menaris and restore the love he lost.

One of the most refreshing aspects of this story is the way Wright gives the dragons their own culture, language, and politics—an element that is rarely explored in fantasy. They are typically so inhuman and often animalistic. I adored this incredibly different take on them.

I found the book to be incredibly well-written, with solid, complex characters and plenty of surprising twists. Aldewin gets more to do here and I enjoyed the different facets of numerous characters explored here. It is also enjoyable to see Ishna's connection with Quen evolve throughout the story. All of the relationships in this are layered and nuanced.

That said, as someone who fell in love with Quen in the first book, I was a bit disappointed that she is so distant here. I found myself constantly waiting for her presence, which affected my emotional connection to the new characters. While I appreciated getting to know other members of the cast, Quen was my primary draw, and her absence left a gap for me. This is, of course, just a personal taste, as the story is otherwise impressive.

Overall, The Spring Dragon is a captivating story with deep world-building and thoughtful character arcs. It’s an ambitious book that explores wonderful themes, even if I personally wished for more Quen time. Regardless, it’s a truly impressive addition to the series.

Spring Dragon delivers a tale of magic, politics, and transformation, where the destinies of humans and dragons entwine in a world on the precipice of upheaval. At its heart is Aldewin, a former assassin seeking redemption and love, drawn into an extraordinary quest that challenges his very identity. His path collides with Ishna, a dragon carrying the soul of Quen, his lost beloved. As Aldewin struggles to restore Quen, Ishna navigates the turmoil of her kind, battling external threats while Quen’s human spirit fights for dominance within her.

Wright’s prose is both immersive and evocative, conjuring vivid landscapes and nuanced characters. Aldewin’s evolution from a harbinger of death to a seeker of life is particularly compelling. His confrontation with the shadows of his past in the Dreaming, as well as the haunting memories of his childhood at Fen Menir, add rich layers to his character. These moments ground the fantastical elements in raw emotion, making his journey all the more gripping.

Themes of identity, transformation, and the tension between nature and ambition resonate throughout the novel. Quen’s fragmented existence within Ishna poses questions about humanity, free will, and the blending of souls. As Quen’s memories seep into Ishna’s consciousness, their duality takes center stage, challenging the boundaries between dragon and human, self and other.

Emotionally, Spring Dragon is as devastating as it is exhilarating. The scene in which Aldewin briefly reunites with Quen in the Dreaming, only to lose her again, is heartbreakingly poignant, a testament to Wright’s ability to craft moments of profound loss and enduring love. Ishna and Quen’s evolving dynamic adds further depth, creating a narrative rich with empathy and tension. The climax, a ritual of restoration fraught with uncertainty, leaves a lasting impact. As one journey concludes, another begins, with Pelagia’s ominous influence casting a long shadow over Ishna’s fate.

A mesmerizing fusion of fantasy and psychological depth, Spring Dragon offers a captivating exploration of morality, power, and the fluidity of identity. Fans of epic fantasy, particularly those who appreciate intricate world-building and moral complexity, will find much to admire here.

The Spring Dragon, Book 2 of the Dragos Primeri series, is a marvelous and breathtaking continuation of this epic fantasy. Natalie Wright’s worldbuilding continues to astound. Yes, this is about conflict between dragons (dragos) and humankind. But most of all this is a love story.

The dragos have been released from a 1,000-year forced hibernation. The dragos which hadn’t been dormant during that time have been enslaved by a secret sect of humans with extreme mental powers. Due to the sacrifice of Quen, a 20-year-old woman carrying a second (ensorcelled) heart, Ishna, the Winter Dragon has been reborn. Ishna vows to reunite the dragos and return them to power. However, humankind have changed during the past 1,000 years, and the dragos aren’t prepared for the enhanced capabilities of their enemy. Both are searching for the mysterious Heart of Menaris. Whoever gets the Heart will change the world.

Aldewin is Quen’s lover and in the first book of the series, he saw Quen transmuted from the human woman he loved to the Winter Dragon. Ishna now carries Quen’s heart within her and promises Quen and Aldewin she will keep Quen’s heart safe until it can be moved to a new body. Ishna’s dragos family is still incomplete and she searches for the Spring Dragon, the one dragos that will be able to help Quen. But there is a time limit, the longer Quen remains within Ishna’s body, the more Quen begins to lose her consciousness. This story introduces a new continent, new people, and new magic, while continuing the first book’s core characters – Aldewin, Quen, Ishna, Shel, Imbica, Nivi. The action is intense, with lots of physical and magical skirmishes. Magic becomes more entwined with Aldewin’s persona.

I would not call this a standalone novel. It does give a very small recap of what went before but I highly recommend reading the first book, Season of the Dragon, and then this second book, The Spring Dragon. You will be well rewarded with a more encompassing robust understanding and appreciation of this fabulous world the author has given us.

I received a free advanced reading copy of the book for voluntary review. Opinion and review are my own.

I received this book from Natalie Wright and some PR and per usual she knocked it out of the park. I want to thank Natalie for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This series is some serious high fantasy, and I was impressed by book two. I felt that she took the world building to another level. I felt this book also went to new heights without Quen driving the plot, as much as I liked her, she was a little irrational. Aldewin at the lead of this book made for an interesting adventure and I enjoyed his POV very much. The world building continued as they explored new places, and I found all the new characters just likable as the original cast. There were some obvious plot twists that I saw coming like Dio being a spy, but I was not sure for who. But Pelagia coming back I did not see coming. I can never tell if I hate her or like her, sometimes she does the right thing, and I like her and then she goes and ruins it by being the villain again. The dragons held a huge part of this story, and I loved seeing how they interacted and how their society worked. I felt that they were a great addition to the plot and the storyline, and I cannot wait to meet the other primal dragons.

I hated the ending, but I am glad I know where the next book is going, most of both books I have been wondering what the overarching plot goal of this series is. In many series you know when the end goal is, in the last two books I cannot tell what the overarching end goal is only the end goal for that specific book. I am intrigued for the next book to see what the other primal dragons are like and how Quen & Aldewin play into the dragon society as they cannot go back to normal society as they are being hunted.

This book was definitely better than the second and held my attention and I saw the improvement of writing the world building. I felt the dialogue was much better as Aldewin was the MC in this book and he really did not hold anything back with anyone. The pacing was pretty good and in some slow parts there was a lot of revelations to keep you hooked.

Wow. What a sequel!

The Spring Dragon is even stronger than Season of the Dragon. This was a really fantastic follow up to the events in book one, and I really loved Aldewin’s POV in this book.

Aldewin and the pod embark on a sort of quest in The Spring Dragon, and I found myself really loving their journey! Seeing the way Aldewin and the pod grow closer over the course of their time together was great. I really enjoyed the way Shel and Aldewin interacted in particular. They definitely started to give off sibling vibes, which I really loved.

Ishna was also such an interesting POV to have for this book! Not only did she provide some valuable insight into the workings of the Dragos, but she also provided that small link to Quen. I adored the dialogue those two would have internally every now and then, and the way Ishna cared for Quen was just so special. I’m sure that will play into the events of the next book in a big way.

I’m really looking forward to seeing where this story goes after The Spring Dragon. It seems like things are about to get even more intense for everyone, so I will be on the edge of my seat waiting!

Thank you Natalie Wright for the early copy of The Spring Dragon. All opinions are my own!

"I may be a fool. I grant you that. But I've been drinking since I was seven and killing men nearly as long. I can do both at the same time."

My sweet, damaged Aldewin. The Spring Dragon begins approximately six months after the events of Season of the Dragon and primarily follows Aldewin who is still reeling from the loss of Quen. To be fair, it's not every day your lover's body is transformed into that of a Primal dragon. We also have Ishna's perspective, our resident Primal dragon, and a few appearances by Quen, whose soul is within Ishna's body.

I quite enjoyed this entry into the Dragos Primeri saga. The action picks up immediately and doesn't let up throughout the book. I liked Aldewin's perspective and found it a nice change from Quen's POV in the first book. I did find the reliance on internal thoughts to take away from the narrative at times. Thoughts from Aldewin, or even Ishna, were shared, but it didn't always serve the story and confirmed a viewpoint that could already be intuited from the surrounding prose. This is a minor complaint though, and could be attributed to personal preference.

I received a free copy from the author and am leaving my thoughts voluntarily.

I struggled a bit with The Spring Dragon (second book in the Dragos Primeri series). I found book one enjoyable, but the narrative shift in book two (from Quen to Aldewin/Ishna) didn't quite work for me. I didn't mind Aldewin's sections, but I never got into Ishna's POV. I confess I read only a little epic fantasy, so perhaps it was just getting behind a dragon narrator that put me off; I didn't find those scenes compelling and missed Quen's wittier narration. I am giving this book three stars, as it was still an action-packed story. However, I think I will probably end my reading of the series here. That's not a reflection on the quality of this book but rather based on my personal preferences. I see from reviews on Goodreads that many other readers liked this second volume as much as, if not more than, the first, so my rating is really because it didn't suit my tastes. If you are keen on dragon narrators and the higher end of epic fantasy, I am sure you will find something to like with this series.

I received this book as a free eBook ARC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐃𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐨𝐧 is book two in the Dragos Primeri series by @natalie and will be releasing on March 1. This is anticipated to be a five book series.

🏹 Prophecy
🏹 Found Family
🏹 Dragons
🏹 Elemental Magic
🏹 High Stakes Quest and Side Quests
🏹 Animal Sidekicks

Quen and Aldewin have now been seperated as a dragon took Quens soul and flew off. The only think keeping Aldewin going is Quen's friend Nivi, the snow tiger. I loved gettingbto see more from Aldewin and see more of his backstory.

The Dragos Primeri series is definitely an action packed fantasy full of epic quests. I loved getting to see both Quen's and Ishna's point of views and Quen's thoughts while trapped/suppressed.

I am curious to see where Natalie takes this story next and if we will get to continue to explore a new world/scene in each one.

I couldn’t put this book down! This is the 2nd book of the series and the world building continues to be
incredible! We had some new characters introduced to the story as well as characters from the first book. There are so many layers into the story and plot twist are amazing. You think you have it figured out and you don’t. There are characters that you love and characters that you really hate. I love that this book is told in two different perspectives. And I’m emotionally wrecked from the ending of this book leaving me wanting more. If you are on the fence about reading this book, you just need to go ahead and do it. You will not regret it. Thank you Natalie for letting Spring Dragon be my first ARC read I am honored!

OMG!! Natalie! You did it with this one!
I grabbed this ARC not having read the first. So, I was able to read the first and second back to back, and mannnnn I am so glad I did. This series has a special place in my heart.

The story building, the characters, and the overall vibe of the book is amazing and I can't get over how good these two books are. I find it hard to follow along to some fantasy, as the writing is a bit to drawn out, but this is well paced and easy to follow. I was entranced and had a hard time putting it down.

Dragon fantasy is something I am IN LOVE with and this just made me love it even more!

Thank you for letting me read this book and I can't wait to read what happens next!

This book picks up after the events of book 1, and holy stars does it grip you and yank you back in without issue.

Spring Dragon brought everything Season of the Dragon did and even more. It was just what I looked for in a sequel. I love that we get a POV from the dragon and look more into Aldewin, who lets be honest is absolutely amazing.

The way Natalie writes is in a league of its own as she has a way of giving you all of the information you need without overdoing it, making the world come alive. Her store is so captivating and rich, I find myself constantly wanting to pick it up again.

I cannot wait to see what happens in the next book.

With Quen’s soul now trapped in the Winter Dragon, Ishna, Aldewin embarks on a perilous quest to fulfill her last wish and uncover a way to restore her human form. But as he delves deeper, shocking revelations about his own powers and past force him to question everything he thought he knew—even the very foundation of his training.

Meanwhile, Ishna, once again in her dragon form, seeks to reunite all of dragonkind as they awaken from their thousand-year slumber. But their survival hinges on bringing together the four primal dragons, especially her long-lost sister, Veridia, the Spring Dragon—who may hold the key to bringing Quen back.

No Spoilers

Holy moly. Just make these books into a show already. I'm seeing Castlevania-style animation with Fire Force sound team.

The second book in the series, and I loved it more than the first book.

Found Family, love, trust, and betrayal set in a world that's Pirates of the Caribbean x The Hobbit x Eragon with unique and original names, places, and creatures (and dragons!).

This book was such a fun ride and I'm impatiently waiting for the third book... once again, THAT ENDING!!

If you love fantasy adventures and high stakes, read this series.

Thank you to the author for providing me with a copy. The following review represents my honest opinion.

I have conflicting feelings about this book. It is excellently written and I enjoy the author's style but I wasn't very motivated by the story. Giving a dragon a POV is an interesting choice that I both liked and disliked. It certainly gave more depth to the world but it just felt odd to read. I was very interested to see how the author would continue the events of the last book and what Wright came up with fascinated me on a storycrafting level.

As the second installment of the series, this book was packed with expanded lore about the world and characters. The element of surprise is tactfully illustrated in this book to keep you on the edge of your seat wondering if what you just read was real. I especially loved the dual povs switching from Aldewin to Ishna, as you really get to know the different perspectives from human and dragon and the full circle connection.

-1 star because like the first book, it struggles with the build up for how characters fall deeply in love with each other

Thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for giving me an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

This book is a fun sequel and I really like the expanded world building! The mixed POV is a little disjointed, but I can understand why it is there. I am so curious to see where the story is going to go from here.

The action in this book was great. I loved that we got a different pov in this book and got to see more of the action from their side. We got to see different many different scenes and characters in this book and really got to know more about the culture as the story progressed. The ending had me on the edge of my seat!

The world building in this is incredible. I love how the author brought this whole world to life. Aldewin forever. The lengths this male went to for his sol’dishi was beautiful. And what a cliffhanger. Can’t wait for the next book

We continue Quen’s story through a unique perspective-through the eyes of Ishna, the Winter Dragon, who calls to her fellow dragons to awaken and begin the new realm. When one of Ishna’s sisters, the Spring Dragon, does not answer the call, Ishna sets out to find her sister and to find a way to free Quen’s soul from her own dragon form. Aldewin spends his days mourning the loss of Quen, and wonders where Ishna has gone to. Aside from protecting, Nivi, the snow tiger that Quen befriended, Aldewin soon discovers that the key to freeing Quen lies with finding the Heart of Menaris, and in turn, the source of magic that could potentially bring down the dynasty.

I absolutely love these characters and an anxiously awaiting book 3!
