Murder and revenge a in Gulf Coast town. A small Florida town is being threatened by massive land development and offshore oil exploration--both controlled by the antagonistic Roy Higgs, who has married into the town’s oldest, best family. Two other, very different, local men are Mickey Berman, a jazz pianist and owner of a local nightclub; and Bill Raeburn, a promising baseball player who failed to make the major leagues. During the sizzling summer of 1993, Bill argueswith his wife and daughter, both militant environmentalists, about his indebtedness to Roy Higgs. Then he loses the support of his best friend when Mickey becomes involved in an affair with Anita Higgs, Roy’s wife. Dark as the smoke of the failed burn-off from an oil spill, the enmities glower and burst into chases through New Orleans and the Guatemalan jungles, ending in madness and death. The story vividly illustrating the effects of reckless development on the lives of these complex, fascinating characters.
