Jiang Yunshu, a surgical oncologist, collapses after an 18 hour long surgery, only to wake up in the body of Jiang Yunsu a jewellery designer. Yet, that is certainly not the main shock point of his life, because this new world is one with a sub-gender, aka, ABO verse!
The culture shock is immense, and even more than that, is finding out he is married to a man who is an "omega". Bai Tang is Jiang Yunsu's spouse barely in name; more like a slave kept by him to fulfill his sick fantasies. And in a world so highly opressed by alphas, omega have basically no human rights.
This isn't a romance story primarily. It's one of trauma and healing, of standing up for what's right, of finding peace and mutual companionship even when you feel things are hopeless.
For Bai Tang and Jiang Yunshu, every moment of interaction is a hurdle. In the body of his abuser, Yunshu is Bai Tang's personal nightmare come to life, because he cannot trust this abrupt mentality change and keeps fearing these are new tricks to play against him. Even after he realises they are different people, the trauma is so deeply set that he can't overcome the PTSD at all. It takes months and years to slowly regain his confidence, his mental health and his independence.
I enjoyed how true to reality the author stayed while dealing with medical issues in this alternate universe. Endocrinal development, bone fractures and re-healing, mental instability—all of them take time to get addressed. Recovery is an uphill battle most of the time, and that's aptly depicted here!
Even when it came to the omega rights movements, there were set-ups in place even before our MC transmigrated. The best bit was how the protests are portrayed – the non-violent nature of it, yet undeniable wariness when it comes to police violence in response. Realistically, by the end of the novel, issues still persist. Not every thing is solved, but all the uprisings definitely started pushing society in a better direction.
This was a highly satisfying novel to read. The themes of this story are well established early on, and the author doesn't stray from it.
