Always a fan of new authors, I agreed to try this ARC by Frederico ‘Freddy’ Iwan. A thriller with dual timelines keeps the reader glued to the story until things become clear. A missing and murdered child creates a case Charlotte Jones feels she can win. The memories of her sister, who suffered them same fate, leave her demanding answers and hunting for the truth. Iwan delivers a story well worth reading.
The Blue Ridge Mountains prove an alluring backdrop for Charlotte Jones and her family of sheep farmers. She lived in the area until she went off to college and earned a law degree. However, the waning months of her living in Virginia proved horrible, as her sister, Mari, was kidnapped and murdered. No one was ever caught, forcing Charlotte to live without answers to her many questions.
Thrust into the middle of a trial trying to put a man away for kidnapping and murder of a little girl, Charlotte pours all she has into the case, while never forgetting her sister’s experience. As she tries to gather evidence, Charlotte learns a little more about the lead-up to Mari’s disappearance and some less than favorable people who worked on her family’s farm. What comes next is not only a courtroom battle, but an attempt to find answers for what happened to Mari and bring her the justice she was denied.
Reconnecting with someone from her youth, Charlotte finds herself pushed into the middle of a dark web of lies and corrupt practices, where criminal events are a dime a dozen. Seeking answers, Charlotte will find some, but also awkward truths she hoped never to learn about her sister and the community around the farm. A well-paced story I read swiftly and with interest.
A great story always begins with a strong foundation for me. Frederico ‘Freddy’ Iwan provided that for me, with only a few areas I felt needed work. The story flowed well and kept my attention, as the narrative built effectively in all the right places. While the courtroom aspects to the story seemed rushed and not as riveting as I would have liked, I can respect that this was not the central genre of the story and could be window dressing. Iwan works his characters well, providing backstory and development in this piece that straddles two time periods. Plot points worked well and keep things from being too predictable, though there are surprises as the race to the truth thickens. A good piece of writing that I was able to finish in a single sitting. I will look for more by the author soon!

The storyline of the book was fine. What got to be incredibly annoying was the writing style and overuse of certain words, like adorned. The over-description and repeating of themes reminded me of a student who wrote a one-page paper but the assignment required three so it was then filled with meaningless fluff.

I gave this book 4 because it had great twists and a great ending. I however, found it a bit drawn out, and very repetitive, which made it hard to get through for me. There was an overuse of descriptive words, such as palpable. Some of the dialogue between characters seemed very unrealistic and not the way people actually talk to each other. But it was a good book, especially if you like really detailed descriptions and character building.

The descriptions in this book really paint the picture, you can really envision the places that are involved in the story. Charlotte is a character you are constantly cheering for on her battle for justice, a true FMC that is strong in her morals and confident in who she is. The twists and turns were very well thought out and I loved how it all came together at the end.
