Texted First: A Dark College Sports Romance

Rate this book
All that Sadie Lane Garner required to find joy was a blank canvas and a set of paintbrushes. Facing a mountain of deadlines and scarce opportunities to work in the studio, she offers to tidy up the art building for the privilege of accessing university art materials after hours. However, she hadn't anticipated the boisterous baseball games audible through the workshop's windows, the almost flawless perspective of the field, or the presence of the cunning, dark-haired sportsman, Elijah Preston, famed for his charisma and batting prowess. Soon enough, Sadie discovers that Elijah enjoys an unobstructed view of her as well.

I really didn’t want to come on here and completely hate on a book, especially one from an indie debut author, but I have to share my honest opinions. I will say this: the book is extremely easy to read. I flew through it in a matter of days.

That said, I was just reading it without forming any connections to the characters. It didn’t help that there were little to no descriptions of the characters, so I couldn’t even picture them. For example, I didn’t realise Elijah was Black until the author mentioned that the main character, Sadie, felt afraid when the police arrived at a house party about 55% the way through the book. This was confusing, especially since the male love interest on the front cover is clearly white, which raises continuity issues. These continuous inconsistencies made it difficult for the story to flow naturally.

The language and dialogue also didn’t flow well, and there wasn’t any real build-up for the characters.

Not even the sex could make it exciting. It was just so odd because there had been no build-up.

Additionally, there were so many grammar and punctuation errors that the book could have benefitted from another round of editing.

Now, I'm not an expert on the definition of dark romances, but this just didn't fit into what I would expect of a dark romance. There were no morally grey characters, consent issues, or disturbing storylines. You'll be sorely disappointed if you went into this thinking it was going to be a dark romance when it clearly isn't.

I’m left feeling very disappointed because, unfortunately, this just didn’t work for me. What a way to finish my 2024 reading.

I enjoyed this so much, it was an easy read. Have in mind it isn't dark, sure it has some scenes but nothing close dark in fact the scenes are of love. I didn't realize he was black until the mention close to 55% and it's confusing since the cover is of a white man.

Aside from that it's a fun book easy and entertaing , also Eli i love u.
