I want to start out this review by saying how thrilled I was to read a cozy fantasy that I really liked. Often, "cozy fantasy" is code for "there's not a lot of plot," but apparently a cozy fantasy ROMANCE really works for me. That's because there's no need for an epic fantasy plot; instead, I just want to know how these two dumdums are going to end up together. Some things to know before picking this up: it's a closed door, childhood-friends-to-lovers MF romance. The FMC, Juniper, is about 4 years older than the MMC, Oleander. She lives with major social anxiety that has almost made her a recluse. Also of note? They may be childhood best friends, but their relationship is also that of foster siblings: Juniper's parents adopted Oleander after he was orphaned at 8 years old.
So yeah, this is a really cute cozy fantasy romance! I especially appreciated the world building: this can feel like an afterthought in cozy fantasy or romantasy, and while the magic system isn't fully fleshed out (and doesn't need to be), the world itself feels coherent and like the author has really thought about the implications of her fantasy society. At the same time, it would not be overwhelming for a new-to-fantasy reader or someone who reads mostly romantasy. The romance has low interpersonal angst, since these two characters love and respect each other already, but there's plenty to keep them apart. That includes a prospective love triangle, when Juniper meets another man with whom she feels very comfortable. That addition felt more organic than it might have, since both the prologue and epilogue are from his perspective. (Dare I wonder if there will be another book in the series featuring Theo??)
This is a debut, and once in a while it felt like it (for example, when a major supporting character is introduced at 60% of the way in). That said, this is a GOOD debut with strong writing. If you pick this one up, you'll feel like you're in on the ground floor with a solid new author. I had a really fun time reading this one (and, as you probably realized already, am hoping for a Theo sequel!).
