Colbie’s life has changed beyond comprehension and she’s struggling to come to terms with it all. But the goddess and magic haven’t finished with her and information comes to light that is going to change everything.
Marks, mates, and missing children are only the tip of the iceberg and Colbie is working against time to solve more problems than she could have comprehended. But her new friends have become the support she has always craved, and with the help of watch team one and the former king and queens, not to mention a meddling goddess, she is starting to feel like she can handle anything that is thrown at her.
She just needs to get that crown on her head and control of the shifter magic, but to do that she has to chase down her past. And that is not as easy as she had hoped. Can Colbie find the shifter masquerading as a human before someone else gains control of the shifter magic, or worse kills her before she can be crowned Queen of the Shifters?
This duet started out great and I’m really disappointed how this turned out. Book 1 was paced well and all that so I was looking forward to thjs book and see how things will pan out. But all the build up in book 1 went down the drain. We got unnecessary internal monologue, rushed plot and bonding moments, no real relationship connection whatsoever, a goddess who is too meddlesome, and just weird things overall. I feel like I wasted my time reading this which is sad because I liked book 1.
The book often felt over-explained, with many conversations reading more like exposition dumps than natural dialogue. Characters frequently stopped the story to explain things the reader could have inferred, which slowed the pacing dramatically. As a result, the narrative felt stretched, and I don’t think the book needed to be this long. With tighter writing and more trust in the reader’s ability to follow along, the story could have been much more engaging.
DNF 25%. Such a disappointment compared to book 1. I genuinely liked the world building by the end of book 1 but the author tried to expand it way too far with ideas that seemed thrown together. The internal monologue and dialogue was horrid, I had a hard time getting through all of the info dumped within them.

Nice close of what I think will be part of a bigger world. There’s still more mystery and story to tell.
I liked the world and setup and the chemistry between Colbie and her mates, but with 8 of them, it takes up a lot of real estate in the book. There were a few instances where sexy fun times seemed inappropriate with the current plot. At least for me.
The climax wasn’t very suspenseful, but it had some nice moments. I love the grandparents!
Highly recommend this duet for an excellent storyline, excellent world build and such huge characters! Love Colbie and her boys — hope to see more of them in upcoming side stories. Highly recommend. 5 stars.
I liked book one, but this one did not live up to that. Pacing was off, the plot expanded so much that the ending was really rushed and not very satisfying, and it didn't need to happen that way. So many characters were added that no one really got enough page time dedicated to them. Overall, not how I would have liked to see this one turn out.
Was ok but I felt like some parts were dragged out while others were rushed. I liked the bi representation and how they accepted the new guys into the group.
8 is a bit much. It kinda felt rushed as they mated and I skimmed about the last 10% or so. It wasn't bad, I was just sort of over it? Curious about the sister's stories tho.
This book had so many problems just in the first few chapters and I’m going to lay them all out for you.
Normally I don’t too much mind some MM in my RH but it still needs to be centered around the FMC. So the fact that it happened in the first scene, and not long before they found out who their mate was (which had been pretty damn obvious from the start), and after holding back for literal years, it felt like a real slap in the face. Not to mention both males were dominant and submissive at the same time, so not realistic. This really took me out of the story and literally within the first few pages.
I’m also super not into degradation at all so a warning would’ve been great and I could’ve avoided this series.
I hate when authors refuse to use contractions. It makes the writing clunky and stilted, especially when it’s speech.
The contradiction with the mating marks really annoyed me. They feel a pull but don’t? How does that work?! They even comment that it feels like she’s their mate but for some reason dismiss it. And why didn’t the mark show up at the same time as her queen marks? None of this makes sense.
The introduction of the councils members, particularly the Coldicotts, was so stilted and awkward. There were definitely better ways to write it more naturally.
There’s also timeline continuity issues, and considering we barely cover a couple weeks across both books, that’s disconcerting.
The repetition of certain things, like keeping the Coldicotts on the council, was aggravating. As was the fact every second of every day was spelled out in great detail. It’s okay to gloss over things that are unimportant in the grand scheme. And discussing the minute details of everything is exhausting!
Early in the book, when Gracelyn gets excited about her parents maybe being on the new council and staying in the palace was so damn weird. And our FMC saying she doesn’t want to split up a family. Good lord! They’re adults! No adult wants to live with their parents and vice versa forever. This exchange was so off putting I almost quit the book. Then it moved on to logistics of shifters getting pregnant and that was so cringe I almost threw up. And it didn’t end there. The conversation just kept going and going and going. It was a terrible info dump situation. They discussed a damn severance package for the council for crying out loud!
I thought Violet worked for Colbie? Why did she suddenly say she’d only known her a week??
This became a DNF as soon as they reiterated, for a THIRD time just in this book, about feral shifters. I cannot stand when an author fills pages with the same information over and over. I’m not sure how I rated the first book so high, I must’ve been off my rocker.
I had to leave a review because—wow—this book was such a letdown. And I'm extra pissed because I *really* liked Book 1.
Book 2 felt like it was written by a completely different person. I don’t understand why the author chose to focus on such mundane stuff.
Book 1 had great pacing and solid writing. This one? Rushed. Info dumped everywhere. It felt like the author suddenly had a bunch of ideas and decided to cram *all* of them into this book.
Okay after book 1 I was expecting this series to be at least 4-5 books maybe more.
I love Lexie Winston, truly her Galaxy Circus series was fabulous and made me fall in love with her ability to create unique and complex characters both main and side and bring them all to light especially since she creates so many in her worlds. It’s lovely and enjoyable.
However, we learn this is the end of Colbie’s series… as in the series is not done but Colbie is done being our FMC. I feel like I understand the author’s take on wanting to try this out but I personally would read 5 books or more or less around each FMC and their own complete series. Where we see a true ending and learn more about their men and the FMC.
I feel like I was just starting to get to know six of her men and Nox just came back and we just met Titus. Yet they all feel like strangers still even Colbie does but I was just starting to love them towards the end of this book and that’s it?
Maybe the author Lexie Winston will change her mind and give us more of Colbie down the road after introducing the other queens for a good reading order but dang if she doesn’t my heart is going to be a little sad. I’m sure Colbie and her guys and support system will show up in the other books but it won’t be as intimate and I just feel like there’s so much of them I need to learn from them in their POVs still.
Like how will they help her process through the death of her mother or her betrayal?
What is Liam’s dad up to?
How is Gem handling the children they just saved?
Is Nox and/or Titus still struggling with their status as her mates?
What’s going to happen with Gianna now?
What about the missing council members?
When is Colbie going to bake again?
How is Colbie going to navigate finding her dad?
All of these questions can only be answered from a book with the shifters POV so I’m hoping we see Colbie some more in her own books.
“Everything is not right in my world, but I have a feeling it will be again soon.”
It’s not over … the duet is over, but the story isn’t. It’s clearly gearing up for an interconnected series, which would be fine … if it had been in the original synopsis. Or in this synopsis. I’m expecting if I’m reading book 2 of 2 FOR IT ALL TO BE WRAPPED UP AT THE END.
Like clearly we’re going to the Vampire Kingdom next, but I find the whole thing annoying when this was a really great duet. Except I was anxious wondering how they were going to solve it all, for them NOT TO SOLVE IT ALL.
Ok, so I know the beginning was important to see what the council was doing, but just because the first book was light on spice, didn’t mean we needed to start chapter one blazing… there were so many scenes and plots that were so long. It’s almost as if this book needed to be longer or to be two books. I loved the story and the characters. It was just at 45% when I realized it wasn’t possible to end it well and completely … and that’s exactly what happened.
Disappointed that they never got the royal book back, or to finish with the councilman or to finish with Gianna and we never got to see the councilman learn they were being replaced … so many things were drawn out but we didn’t get to talk to the kids. The coronation and challenge day weren’t nearly as exciting as they were lead to be described. It was so close to spectacular with falling short.
EDIT: I have returned… all that conjecture and rude behavior from the Mean Girls ™️ about her being “a prey animal” for us to not to get to see their reactions to being a hyrda?! Nothing happened to Liam’s dad or other brothers but to ominously say he faded into the crowd after be looked visibly angry… why?!

What a great way to end Colbie's story. I loved seeing how determined and how much Colbie has grown in this duet. But as always little Archie has my whole entire heart. I was heart broken when his momma grounded him from having Colbie as his sidepiece. There was real tears I'm telling ya. Lexie Winston has made this duet come to life and all I want to do is petition the shifter kingdom to become one of her loyal and trusted subjects.
Colbie is going to be the new Queen of all shifters as long as she can find her mates before the coronation day. Watch Team One Gryffin, Jeremy, Hunter, Liam and Brodie find out that their bond group is blessed with the Queen as their mate but they long for their six bond mate.
Colbie does not stand for the injustice that the fairy, equine and mer shifters face. Upon mentioning that she was going to open up a few seats within the council and that she wants those of the outcasted races to inhabit. She is blessed with a updated mark adding 2 new mates to her bond group with a total of 8. I love that she is blessed with a Tiger, Dragon, Phoenix, Bear, Wolf, Mer, Pegasus and a Fairy mate. Her main form is not to be trifled with and totally made Gianna pee her self in fear!
Poor Colbie is trying to manage all her various forms, manage her mates, the kingdom and hunting down the allusive bond mate Nox who ran away. A major bomb gets dropped on Colbie that will forever change her.
When this came out I went and read the first in the duet. Then I barely came up for air until I had finished both books! This is a charming story with easy going captivating characters. Turns out it is just the beginning of a series within this world construct and at least three more sets are likely to tie up the underlying plot line. Don't need to wait though, because this duet is nicely concluded without an angsty cliff hanger. Spoilers in summary: this world construct consists of four known (and one hidden) separate kingdoms. This duet is about the shifter kingdom, but vampires, witches and fae all have separate monarchies. After a vicious war between humans and paranormals, the Goddesses intervened and established this construct. Every forty years a human is magically selected to become the new queen or king of the kingdom, and prospective mates are identified. Our heroine is a 25? year old baker who has been overshadowed by her narcissistic single mother, but she now has her own successful life. When the magic hits, she is chosen, much to her dismay. She will need to be magically turned into a shifter and select mates from her preselected group! So the adventure begins. It's a great way to spend some free time! Enjoy it.
Why? Just Why? I loved the first book and was so sad thinking I was going to have to wait for the next book, when i realized book 2 was already out but this was a waste of my time. There were parts in the book where there was an entire chapter of one person just talking no progress, slight background story, but overall just yapping. Then there were rushed over sexy scenes that could’ve waited for another chapter or so. It felt like the author wanted to hurry up and finish this book because she was tired of it.
She could have used this book to develop the relationships that were just added at the end instead of rushing it, and then start introducing specific conflict, leaving us with a cliff hanger. Then conflict resolution in the next book, if there was a next book.
Why is there no next book for Colby that is so dumb. How can you just end this story and then say the new main characters will add onto her story? I don’t know the other main characters, I know this one. We don’t know what happened to Liam’s father? We don’t know what happen with the ferals we literally did not progress at all. The only thing that changed was her becoming queen.
Such a great plot and world but such poor execution 😔
This series had so much potential, I was so excited for this one, and it just dragged. It was an almost 500 page yap session without ANY plot development and just a bunch of mating. I wouldn’t have minded it this much if they characters had any kind if personality, but they all felt flat; I couldn’t distinguish one mate from the other, which is an issue, because there are 9!!!! NINE??? What do you mean they all talk the same, act the same, and even THINK the same. Just give me 4 mates, or the original 6, and that would have been PLENTY because they all had different opinions and relations to each other!! The beginning felt forced, the middle dragged, and the ending was rushed. You can’t give me a character driven book, and then not give them any feeling or drive or LIFE. Loved book one, it had such a good layout of the world building, loved Colbie for being sweet and not necessarily a ‘baddie’ and I loved the slow build of the harem. This just missed all of that. After this little hate rant I know it seems weird that I might read pt 3 but I might try it out now that the characters are finally settled.
Still solid. It’s good, but it had some real pacing issues. We got way too much detail and minute to minute activity when we could have jumped ahead hours or a day. And then we had a ton happen in too short a time period, when it probably should have taken an entire extra book worth of time. We really could have had an entire book for each mate. Or a book for a couple mates at a time. It was just too many mates and too many big huge things happening in the world/plot to not last an entire series just for this group. I’m sure the other queens will get their own duologies but I’m just not sure I want to continue now that I’ve hit a good enough stopping point.
The men really needed more time to develop their characters. We sorta got to know Nox and Liam. The fairy assassin was so cool and could have really been explored more but we didn’t see much of him. Brodie was super surface level. Same with the dragon. Gryffin seemed like he was going to shape up to be way more important and involved but then nothing happened there other than him being in love with Gem, and honestly they seemed more in love with each other than with the FMC because there just wasn’t enough interaction there.
Lexie Winston's paranormal romance, Ardent Queen, is the second book in the Kingdom of Aramis Duet, a "why choose" reverse harem romance that follows protagonist Colbie. In this installment, Colbie is grappling with her newfound identity and magical powers, which are still evolving. As she races against time to claim the Shifter magic and her crown, she must also navigate a rapidly expanding harem and a meddlesome goddess. The plot is packed with challenges, including missing children and confronting her past, but is often criticized for a rushed and overstuffed narrative. Reviews suggest that while the world-building is compelling, the character and relationship development falls short. Many readers found the pacing inconsistent, with a slow build-up in book one leading to a second book that rushes through major plot points and relationships. Some also felt the large reverse harem lacked genuine connection and chemistry. Ultimately, Ardent Queen is best suited for fans of fast-paced paranormal romance who enjoy complex fantasy settings and are not bothered by a less-developed romance.
Colby has been accepted as the queen, but she still has to find and bond to all of her mates. In addition to that, there is a coronation and a challenge to field, as well as a few situations within the kingdom that need to be dealt with.
Picking up from where book one left off, we find Colby in the midst of all the negotiations allowing her to become the shifter queen, while she tries to figure out her mate situation as well as her shifter situation. The book ends with everything worked out for the most part, and a few loose ends that will be covered in the books dealing with subsequent Kingdom issues (not yet written/out). It’s a fast paced story, with a lot of steamy scenes (that happens with a lot of mates!) and a bit of action. It’s an engaging read, and I enjoyed following Colby as she found her future, and faced her fears, and I’m looking forward to seeing what happens in the other kingdoms in the future.
If you’re a RH fantasy lover, then this is a series you will be sure to enjoy.
I really loved the first book. It was such a unique concept and a fresh take on a typical shifter book. Colbie’s backstory was well done, her great personality shone through, and her guys had a reasonable amount of backstory / POVs for a first book. Then comes the second book, and everything was rushed. Her mates were more concepts than actual characters, especially the last two. Nox was a disappointment…she spent the whole book trying to find him, and then he seemed like an afterthought when she finally found him. This book should have stopped when they first arrived at the Chaos kingdom. A third book could have developed her relationships with her mates (the assassin was so intriguing, and he was barely mentioned!!!) more, and the missing children / book plot could’ve been flushed out more with a third book. The writing was great, which made this book even more disappointing, since I know this could’ve been an amazing book with more time and another book added to the series.
Are you kidding me??!!! All of that build up just to end it right there?!
Good God! Colbie got on my lassssst nerves! She literally watched liam die and just sat there like she was just going to let them take her??!! Like girl you are a eight headed hydra!!! Get it together!
And then she bit five of her mates at once while looking for her sixth and dealing with the other turmoils as if she had time for that!!
Then everytime someone reminded her she may have to kill or fight someone like Gianna she got scared and worried like girl…EIGHT HEADED HYDRA like hello??!!
To do all of that build with her mates and their relationships with each other just to cut it off like that was so irritating!
All in all I guess it was a good storyline and I’m not sure if those spinoffs are out and pray for me if they aren’t.. just got out a book slump and it took forever I really don’t want to get into another one

This two book series was ok read, I did like the main characters etc…but would I read again..no, I think it’s because I’m tired of reading so called reverse harems and there M/M in 60% of them..even though I’ve read many only because the story was awesome and they had only two bi guys..but this one out of the 8 , 4 of them were bi….and believe me I see nothing wrong with that…but to me a reverse harem is a WOMAN/ not teenager who has more than two men in her harem….they should start a new genre in Amazon books…one woman, multiple men and bisexual male or females…when I felt like reading that genre I could, but this series would have been better as others as well with less men then she wouldn’t need help with the masses…😁 they just bore me and then I skip parts of the book…there only so many times can read the same sex scenes repeating without getting bored…..or maybe it’s just a me thing..🤔. Lol
I really wanted to love this story, the first good was super fun and engaging. But the wrap up in book two was too much in so little time. Can you emotionally and physically mate 7 men in less than 2 weeks? Of course not and instead of feeling sexy and romantic I kept cringing, can’t even pretend this is believable or wonderful. There was a moral message of “racial” equality between shifter types, but it was of the “color doesnt matter” schtick instead of honor and respect for differences. There was no time for anything else! Too many plot points just zoom zoom zoom wrapped in a page. Not saying it should have been 5 books, I wouldn’t have read that either. Sometimes simpler is better.
The second book in the Kingdom of Aramis duet was thoroughly entertaining. I enjoyed seeing the conclusion of Colbie’s journey with her mates. I’d give this book a 3.75. It kept me engaged, but there was also a couple of times where I doubted the FMC intelligence and there’s nothing I can’t stand more than a FMC who makes me question their smarts. I like intelligent characters and I felt like a number of the characters were stumbling around in the dark. Nonetheless, this was an enjoyable story and I will be reading the rest of the books set in this world whenever they are released.
This was supposed to be a reverse harem masterpiece. Eight men. EIGHT. I was emotionally preparing to be loved, ruined, and maybe spiritually rearranged. Book one seduced me. I was locked in. Obsessed. Practically planning a group honeymoon.
Then book two came in like a half-hearted booty call and left me emotionally unsatisfied. Rushed bonds. Shallow scenes. Spice that felt like it skipped foreplay and went straight to good luck girl.
I wanted to be feral and unwell. Instead I’m sitting here blinking at the last page like that’s it? That’s all I get?
This wasn’t a conclusion it was a breakup. And not even a good one. I deserved better. We all did.
I love this author and everything she puts out, so I have to round this one up instead of down. Solid 3.5 read.
Will say, this is not my favorite book by this author, and I did feel it lacked in comparison to the first. However, it is still a good read. For me, the relationships were not built out in the way I was anticipating. I feel like there was areas that felt very mundane and repetitive that could've been swapped out for more development.
I also was super confused about 80-90% along because I could tell the story was about to wrap up but knew there was absolutely zero way everything was going to be settled. Which it wasn't, but it will be later on when the series continues.
Well Colbie got a satisfactory ending, didn't she? She met and is falling in line with her soul mates. She met her father, learned she has siblings, travelled to exotic places, harnessed her magic and was finally crowned. All in all a very successful conclusion. I know that the story from this 'world' isn't finished and the day hasn't been saved yet but these unsolved mysteries kill me. I love Lexie Winston and this series was a fun easy read with a little bit of angst but the spice in this book made up for all of the bad attitudes.
DNF cuz why tf do the guys act and talk like that 😭 “flavour of the week” ewwwww. Just because they’re not talking about the main character who they’re supposed to fall in love with it makes everything good? Let’s be real plzzzz. You talk like this about women you sleep w you’re a pos idc if it’s not serious. Also they said I love you so quick like you do not love each other at all you are basically strangers still. Plot could’ve been good but even I noticed plot holes (which I NEVER do I’m just there for the ride)
