This novel follows the journey of Sikander Sahay, a fearless young leader from Chandni Chowk, as he rises against the corrupt forces of Indian politics. His unwavering commitment to justice and his bold stand against tyranny made him a beacon of hope for the oppressed. Sikander first gained recognition when he led the slum dwellers in their struggle against oppressive rulers. Soon, he became a youth icon, symbolizing courage, justice, and the power of the people.
However, Sikander’s childhood was anything but ordinary. Being fatherless, he was often subjected to social ridicule and labelled with cruel names. No one knew the truth about his lineage—the secret that he was the only son of Krishna Kant Sahay, the former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and the president of NDP. When fame came knocking, his father approached him with an offer to join the party. On his mother’s advice, Sikander agreed—but on his own terms. Thus began his journey into the treacherous world of politics, a realm filled with deception, betrayals, and ever-changing loyalties. With the steadfast support of his mentor, Uncle Raj, he faced powerful enemies, endured life-threatening attacks, and remained unyielding in his fight against corruption.
Despite the adversities, Sikander carved a place for himself in the political fraternity, earning respect even from his fiercest rivals. His journey was far from smooth, though— it was filled with betrayals, not just from enemies but also fro filled with betrayals, not just from enemies, but also from those he deeply trusted and admired. His life became a gripping tale of power, ambition, and the cost of standing up for what is right.

The novel is a compelling political drama that delves into the darker side of governance. Written in simple and accessible language, it ensures that even readers unfamiliar with political fiction can read it. The gripping narration and well-developed characters contribute to the book’s immersive storytelling, making it fast-paced and thought-provoking. Although I generally avoid reading political fiction, I thoroughly enjoyed this story. The author masterfully portrays the reality of our political landscape—not just the corruption we are aware of but the intricate conspiracies that unfold behind closed doors. The book forces us to reflect on the power of our votes and how one wrong decision can allow a corrupt leader to manipulate an entire system. It highlights the irony of our society: while we take pride in "unity in diversity", politicians thrive on "divide and rule", exploiting these divisions for their own gain. One of the most powerful moments in the book is Sikander’s dialogue about how, when travelling abroad, we are identified simply as Indians, not by our religion—so why do we allow these divisions to dictate our lives within our own country? His perspective on "unity and rule" was particularly impactful.
Despite its many strengths, Krishna Kant Sahay’s character lacked depth and could have been better. Similarly, Uncle Raj’s character is somewhat ambiguous, making his motivations unclear. While it is understandable that political figures often shift allegiances, a little more depth in his character would have made his role more compelling.

Overall, this novel is engaging and thought-provoking, starkly reflecting our political reality. I highly recommend it to all readers, regardless of their preferred genre. It challenges perspectives, sparks significant discussions, and leaves a lasting impression.

We all might have encountered this line that a nation is defined by the qualities and virtues of its people. Now, what if the people of a nation smoke the poisonous gas of monotonous injustices, inequalities, and corruption that too, has been offered by its own political leaders, who are supposed to serve the people of a nation but are seen to have ended up serving their own personal interests? In answering this question, H A Rahman, in his book "And a Leader Is Born," talks about a leader named Sikander who put his time and life into serving and leading the slum dwellers in their struggles against the tyrant rulers who came into power by making false promises.

Throughout the story of Sikander, we get the real picture of how the slum dwellers and poor are being tried to be dragged out from the mainstream society and exploited by greedy politicians in India. It is definitely not easier for Sikander to work with the people of slums of Delhi and become a great figure in their lives. The transformation of Sikander into a well-rounded and extraordinary leader whose father died while saving his people during a riot defined the quality of a leader that a country like India urgently needs. Sikander while working for the underprivileged sections not everytime faced victory and triumph but also faced a lot of resistances and sometimes, even betrayal from his own people.

The book is not merely a biography or leadership manual, it is a powerful blend of personal experiences, reflections, and practical insights that collectively paint the portrait of a leader who rises like a sun and act as a savior to many lives. One of the book's strengths lies in its accessibility and Rahman's language is simple, yet impactful, making the book suitable for readers from various backgrounds to understand the current political scenario. The truth of the darkest side of India has been reflected through the picture of the atrocities faced by the poor people. Another standout feature of the book is its motivational tone to become a leader and how much it is important for taking any initiative to work on behalf of helpless people for the well-being and development of a nation.

This book falls under the fiction genre, featuring a political fiction story. The cover image of the book gives us a glimpse of the core of the story, and it also matches the title.

The main protagonist of the story is Sikander, and the entire plot revolves around him. Sikander lives with his mother, while his father is unknown to the world. He is a young and energetic man whose life is filled with revolution and the campaign "Young India," which he runs along with his friends. Sikander's life remained the same until he participated in and gave a voice to the slum people, which changed his image and fame overnight. This event marks the entry of his father into the story and brings a new heap of twists to the plot.

I liked how Sikander was introduced in the story, when I thought it was becoming too dramatic and flimsy, the author surprised me with a sudden twist. The way Sikander was introduced and how his entry seamlessly integrated into the story was amazing, and I personally enjoyed that sequence a lot. The story itself is written with bold context, and some of the dialogues are crafted so well that they resonate with the political theme of our reality. Additionally, this book is a pure work of fiction that could easily be adapted into a film without any edits.

This is a political fiction story written with detailed narration. I appreciated how different scenes in the same chapters were divided and distinguished with a small, cute symbol for better clarity for the readers. The story is quite predictable, but the scenes are vivid and provide a clear picture as you read. The descriptions of each place, whether it's Chandni Chowk, Rampur, Lucknow, or UP, are written with perfection and make me feel as if I am living in that particular place while reading the book. The book covers corruption, betrayal, political violence, and the fire of revolution in detail, and since the language used is extremely simple, it makes the reading experience of this complex plot feel light.

The novel delves into the darker side of governance and is an engaging political drama. Written in simple and accessible language, it ensures that even readers unfamiliar with political fiction can read it. The book's fast-paced and thought-provoking pace is helped along by the gripping narration and well-developed characters.

Although I generally avoid reading political fiction, I thoroughly enjoyed this story. The author skilfully conveys the reality of our political landscape, including both public corruption and the intricate plots that take place behind closed doors.

The book forces us to reflect on the power of our votes and how one wrong decision can allow a corrupt leader to manipulate an entire system. It highlights the irony of our society: while we take pride in "unity in diversity", politicians thrive on "divide and rule", exploiting these divisions for their gain.

Sikander's discussion of how, when we travel abroad, we are only identified as Indians, not by our religion—so why do we allow these divisions to dictate our lives within our own country?—is one of the book's most powerful moments. The way he viewed "unity and rule" was especially powerful.

Krishna Kant Sahay's character lacked depth and had the potential to be better, despite its many strengths. In a similar vein, Uncle Raj's character is a bit hazy, making it difficult to determine what drives him. Although, understandably, political figures frequently switch allegiances, his character would have been more compelling with a little more depth.

This novel, which starkly reflects our political reality, is engaging and provocative. overall. It is a must-read for all readers, regardless of their preferred genre, in my opinion. It challenges viewpoints, stokes significant debate, and has a lasting impact.

Score: 4.5 out of 5.
Genre: Political fiction
Themes: Identity, Patriotism, Betrayal, and Justice

H. A. Rahman's suspenseful political play "And a Leader Is Born" features the story of Sikander Sahay, a young man from Chandni Chowk who fights against oppression and dishonesty.  In the dangerous world of Indian politics, Sikander does a wonderful job connecting with numerous coalitions and encouraging slum residents to participate in protest activities. I was moved by the character of Sikander Sahay and I felt excited throughout the book.

The first thing that strikes me about this novel is the author's 'accessible language' and 'fast-paced narration,' which makes it easy for readers who may not be accustomed to narratives of political fiction. Rahman does an amazing job at illustrating what India's political landscape looks like, through not only the corrupt practices we see but the conspiracies occurring under-the-table. This narrative is a prompt to readers' consciousnesses around the scope and power behind the act of casting a vote, and the consequences that come due to inaction and political apathy.

Sikander is a beautifully three-dimensional character, he is embodying galore: courage, vulnerability, and a deep sense of justice.

Key Points:

💫 Strong, well-developed conversations

💫 Twists and turns that keep the story engaging

💫Realistic display of political behavior

💫Themes of identity, loyalty, and sacrifice

Final Thoughts:
This is a political novel but it’s more than that. It’s a calling for self-reflection. It weaves together patriotism with an internal conflict that makes it a worthwhile read for anyone who enjoys a good story of transformation and survival. If you lean toward stories of characters overcoming obstacles or defying convention, it's worth the read.

A story about truth, social justice , political upheaval and an all out revolution. This story uses the premise of the imperfect socio-political situation of our country and puts forth an inspiring story to bring about change and justice.

Sikander is the protagonist of the story. Since youth he has been interested in working for the country in the form of social service. He forms an organisation with his colleagues and together they take on corrupted and unjust political and bureaucratic actions. Gradually , he gains social acceptance and enters into the political field. Despite the popular support his political journey is tumultuous to say the least. But his resilience and will power to bring about a change makes the story enthralling and invigorating.

The author has portrayed a realistic picture of the socio-political scenario in our country. The incidents are believable and so are the characters. Political intrigue, conspiracy , corruption and several elements are included in the story. The characters too are rational and action oriented.

The story is both plot driven as well as character driven. With the main character developing through the story and learning the nuances of the political world , the plot presents several intriguing instances to keep the reader hooked. The other characters too are layered and provide twists and revelations at different points which makes the story thrilling.

Overall this is an eye opening and titillating story which indirectly appeals to the youth to take an active participation in the fields of social justice and politics and bring about the changes they aspire to see themselves. A motivation and energizing story suitable for one and all.

L - Legends and lessons that shape the essence of a person.
E - Elections and emotions that reveal more than just the surface.
A - Aspirations and arrests that change the course of lives.
D - Dramas and detonation that instill a burning fire within.
E - Efforts and energies that fuel a person’s journey.
R - Relations and revelations that show people's many faces.

A book that tells us the story that starts in the gullies of Ballimaran and stirs something in the international media. It speaks of the trials, tests and turmoil of a young man who wants to lead his people but is faced with challenges that question his belief, religion, motive and even his legitimacy. A boy who wants to bring change righteously becomes a young man who gives moving electoral speeches. A father who wants to make amends becomes a man who is fighting off his own people. A mother who has lived in difficulty becomes the woman who has the heart to forgive and forget. It shows us the other side of politics and elections, and also threatens to reveal a lot about them. A friend who has been on both sides becomes a person who finally chooses the might of the right.

A slightly slow paced book, it is written in a way that clearly shows how the author thinks in Hindi but writes in English. The book would have been a dazzling gem in Hindi, but the need for English is understandable too. The best part for me was also an ironic one, when the lead has to bribe someone to actually reveal the corruption of a bigger giant, but if the end justifies the means… why not?

Review: And A Leader Is Born by H.A. Rahman
This book honestly surprised me. I’m not the biggest fan of political fiction, but this one? It managed to pull me in — fast. It’s bold, it’s sharp, and it reflects the political chaos we’re so used to ignoring.

Sikander’s journey — from growing up in Chandni Chowk with social stigma to becoming a powerful youth leader — was equal parts gritty and inspiring. His voice felt real. Raw. The struggles weren’t sugar-coated, and the betrayals (even from people he trusted) hit hard. What really stayed with me though was his clarity — especially when he talks about being identified as “just Indian” abroad, while we let religion and caste divide us here. That bit? Too real.

The writing is simple but effective, which makes it accessible even if political stories aren’t your usual genre. It reads like a dramatic political drama but still manages to ask the right questions — about power, unity, and what kind of leaders we really need.

While I did feel some side characters like Krishna Kant Sahay and Uncle Raj could have had more dimension, the story didn’t lose steam. The pace was tight, the narration had bite, and the emotional moments felt earned.

A solid 4 stars from me — not perfect, but powerful, and definitely worth your time if you’re ready to read something that reflects the India we live in.

I started this book with trepidation as politics has never been a great attraction for me from a storytelling point of view. Slowly the plot, the characters, the twists started pulling me in and in no time I was completely engrossed in this gripping thriller which paints a picture of a dream that we all yearn for to realise. A perfect script for an OTT series. A bastard son , a famous father who is surrounded by selfish and dangerous friends/relatives who will kill mercilessly and sacrifice hundreds of innocents in the name of religion, just to keep their grasp on power. The prodigal son, by sheer dedication, becomes favourite of the public and is warmly welcomed by his father to take over the twins from him. He realises too late the chakravyuh he has entered with an eye a close friend of her father and mother's and an enigmatic friend he made in the jail. This is a book that will leave its impact on you with its fast paced, the emotional turbulence between the main characters, the blindness that vengeance brings you and finally the mystery that keeps you turning page after page and yet manages to stump you when it is revealed. Mr. Rahman has written one of the best political potboilers I have read in a long, long time.

And A Leader Is Born by H A Rahman tells the story of Sikander Sahay, a young man from Chandni Chowk who rises from the slums to become a powerful voice for the people. His journey into politics, filled with struggles, betrayals, and powerful moments, forms the core of the novel. It’s a story about leadership, courage, and finding one’s purpose in chaos.

The book moves at a medium pace. There are a few parts where the momentum dips and things slow down a bit, but the narrative quickly gets back on track with some exciting moments. I especially liked the crowd meeting scenes. They are written so vividly, it felt like I was actually standing there, listening to Sikander speak. Those scenes really brought the energy of the story to life.

One thing I really appreciated is that the author doesn’t try to force his personal views on the reader. The story speaks for itself without preaching. It’s engaging and pulls you in without ever feeling too heavy or one-sided. I stayed interested right till the end.

The twist towards the end was well placed and the conclusion felt complete and satisfying. This is a solid read for anyone who enjoys political fiction with realism, heart, and a clear voice.

"No religion ever teaches hatred or killing in its name."

"And a Leader is Born" by H A Rahman is a gripping political thriller that moves forward based on the life of Sikander, who lives in Chandni-chowk and famous for his courageous and fearless nature. He is moonstruck to do something fruitful for the slum dwellers and eager to fight against the tyrant and poisonous political leaders. As he chooses to keep going, he faces betrayal and treacherous behaviour not only from his enemies but also from his close people. Despite of receiving threats and vulgarism continuously, nothing can stop him from his plan and wish.

Sikander casts a light on the dark part of the society, politics of our country and the false promises of the politicians. The author has perfectly balanced the pace of the thriller while providing the necessary political informations so that it does not seem like info-dumping. It is really a thought provoking read for me.

It's a powerful political thriller about a brave young man named Sikander Sahay. He lives in Chandni Chowk and dreams of making his country better. Being courageous he becomes a strong voice for the people. His words, “The Revolution has begun,” give hope to many.

Sikander’s journey is full of problems. He is hurt by people he trusts and faces many dangers. But with his mother’s love and his uncle’s support, he never gives up. He always chooses what is right, even when it is hard. It shows that a true leader is someone who cares for others and wants to help them.

The book is written in an easy and emotional way. The pace is good and the characters are well portrayed.

And A Leader Is Born is a touching story of courage, kindness, and truth. It reminds us that great leaders are those who fight for justice and never leave their people behind.

Just finished reading And a Leader Is Born by H. A. Rahman — a political fiction set in the capital city of India, heart of Delhi. The story follows Sikander Sahay, a fearless slum leader who rises to become the voice of the oppressed, shaking the foundations of corrupt system. Even though the book is around 300 pages, its simple writing style makes the flow smooth and comparatively quick. You won’t feel lost in jargon or heavy prose — it’s clean, clear, and very accessible, even for readers new to political themes. The plot moves fast, the characters are grounded, and Sikander’s journey is both inspiring and emotional. It’s the kind of book that reminds you change begins with conviction — not connections. You can pick up the book if you’re into stories about justice, leadership, and rising from the margins.

This book has completely changed my perception. Far from being dry or preachy, it’s a gripping human drama set against the backdrop of Indian politics.

Sikander’s journey is riddled with betrayals—not just from sworn enemies, but from those he trusted the most. The narrative doesn’t shy away from showing how power corrupts, how ambition blinds, and how the cost of standing up for justice can be unbearably high.

What impressed me was how real everything felt. The conspiracies, the shifting loyalties, the emotional wounds—they mirror our political landscape too closely for comfort. Yet, beneath all the darkness, there’s a current of hope, of resilience, of a new kind of leadership that inspires faith.

This is more than a novel; it’s a mirror held up to our society, one that demands we reflect on who we are and who we choose to follow.

I loved the action in the book……. Best part is…..how the author stuck to the human emotions at every point…….not just for the protagonist….but every single characters……. The human element in the book was really strong…..

Good pacing….incredible and intruding start….great cliffhangers….brave characters…..interesting political dramas…..thrilling plot twists…..it was an amazing read.

I was intentionally reading it slow initially thinking it’s too serious for me as the book is an historical political fiction…..but….the right dosage of emotions played the best tricks possible……
