When Tess Ward crosses paths with Declan Furey, a dangerously sexy Irish Traveller in town for the infamous Appleby Horse Fair, it sparks the start of a dark, twisted romance.
Declan is intense, possessive and vicious - all the things that both terrify and thrill Tess. She's infatuated, blinded by the flames of passion. Declan and Tess fall for one another, and fall hard.
Declan's powerful hold on Tess begins to drag her away from everything she once knew, trapping her willingly in a life of violence, crime and blistering desire.
Will Tess stand strong and find her feet in this new culture beside Declan, or will she be eaten alive by Furey's flames?
This is a dark romance - please check trigger warnings.
What the actual fuck? The Fmc is attacked, she kills the person who attacked her & run away. The male lead is pissed she ran away, not if she's okay or not. He burned down her grandma house with all memories inside, he didn't even seem to care that she was attacked, he didn't even ask if she was okay, when they meet again he abuses her by chocking her. He is awful, also nothing happened to the woman who attacked her. Declan is an abuser

“Y’can always trust me t’ choose ya, Tess, I will always choose ya. Always.
Plot: 4.5📍 Spice: 4🌶️ Overall: 4.5🌟
As an American, I admittedly know little of Traveller culture, aside from a few references in TV shows. Don't worry you don't use against them, they prefer,"travellers" over alternatives, kin and clan man everything, and they're often very, very prejudiced against.
And while this was clearly fiction, there's delivery some grains of some truth and it was just delectably delightful to watch Tess succumb to her Traveller beau! She definitely is full of sass!!
Declan is just "fekkin" hawt! This was probably over it the absolute few, like single digit few books I would have loved a full model cover for so I could fully "see", the man Ms. Thorne had envisioned. Also, I can just imagine the sexy, thick Irish accent and I would melt to hear this in audiobook form!
Just heckin'..... Yum. Have B.o.b. handy.
I hope we get Declan's best friend, John-Francis's story... Maybe Seamus's as well?? A girl can hope!!
And I can't forget to give a MASSIVE thank you KL Thorne for the opportunity to read and review this book!
Who doesn’t love a morally gray male with a thick Irish accent? I agree with the tagline for sure. A dark and gritty romance. Declan is a swoon-worthy traveller, riding the line of crude and depraved. A bad boy full of ink and bordering on the obsessive. Tess is a gorgeous bartender attempting to fight her attraction to our MMC, and failing miserably. I loved the push and pull between these two, even as the chemistry sizzles right off the page. It was an eye-opening look into a lifestyle that’s not well known to me. This is the kind of story that sticks with you for a while. A book boyfriend that you can’t help but love even as you question yourself why. K.L. Thorne definitely has a talent for dark romance, and I hope to see more from her!
It all starts when Tess Ward comes across Declan Furey. He is a dangerous, sexy Irish traveler who's known for its Appleby Horse Fair, and it's that one meeting that sparks the start of a romance that is dark and twisted.
Declan is so much more than just intense. He's possessive and vicious, and all the things that Tess knows she should be afraid of, and yet he both thrills her and terrifies her at the same time. Suddenly, she finds herself blinded and infatuated by Declan and the flames of passion that consume them both together. And suddenly both Declan and Tess are both falling for each other and they are falling hard and fast.
The powerful hold that Declan has over Tess drags her away from her family and friends and willingly traps her from her peaceful life and puts her into a life of violence, crime, and blistering desire.
Honestly, I never knew that I wanted or needed a rough around the edges, morally grey, Irish traveler in my life the way that I need Declan. Somehow K.L knew exactly what I needed and what I was lacking in my life and what would send me over the edge and this morally gray, Irish Traveller, with a dirty tongue and an thick Irish accent hit the mark perfectly.
Here's the thing, if you don't know anything about the travellers (gypsy's in some cultures) here's what you wouldn't know, travellers and the 'settled' (normies or non-travellers/gypsy) we don't mix. We can't talk and have conversation, but we don't date, and we certainly don't marry, and if a traveler and a 'settled' were to marry, that traveler would be essentially shunned.
Thankfully, Tess isn't your typical 'buffer'. (Accepted by the traveler community). Tess is a wild child, free at heart, and honestly, fate was destined to bring Tess and Declan together and connect them. But, after what was supposed to be a weekend, fling turns into more than a several months fling. Both Tess and Declan both realize that the bond they have is more than unbreakable.
I loved how steamy, spicy, and savory this book really is. The bumps and jumps along the way make it that much more fun. And I love the glossary in the back to help with the dialect challenges.
Tess meets traveller Declan in the pub she works. It’s instant attraction, one she tries to fight, but he won’t take no for an answer and goes out of his way to make Tess his. The two embark on a relationship, and Tess explores the new world of being a traveller’s girlfriend.
Ok. There’s a few honest things I am going to say-and this doesn’t mean I disliked the plot or anything (it’s a five star read) but I actually disliked Declan as the book went on. I absolutely loved him in the beginning; he is morally grey, possessive, cocky and pretty darn jealous. But, he changed Tess and actually, when her friend calls her out on it, it made me feel a bit sad for Tess as I think her friend was right. Declan is 💯 toxic. Yes, this is a gritty and raw dark romance so I totally see why. That being said, I think Declan will make a lot of you fall in love with him as he is just so brilliantly written. He’s just not my sort of man.
The plot was absolutely outstanding though. I loved the traveller scene and felt that it was not only insightful but educational. Living in the UK, where travellers are common, it’s quite interesting to see how they live.
The spice was blooming beautiful and I loved how much Tess clearly gave Declan her all. He honestly is infatuated with her and I don’t think he meant to change her, but he does.
I honestly do mean it when I say this book is fantastic! I’m a huge fan of the author now that I’ve read two of her books. I’m excited for more.
Thank you so much to KL Thorne for the opportunity to read and review this book!!
Furey Fire is a standalone dark contemporary romance. Tess is getting ready for the Appleby Horse Fair - a local event that brings in lots of tourists. She’s a bartender so she’s used to seeing all the different kinds of people, but this year brings lots of new faces, including the nomadic Travelers. This year, she meets a mysterious Irish man named Declan. Could she possibly find herself in a situation that she can’t control?
This was such a fun read! Tess was an interesting character and I really enjoyed seeing her relationship grow with Declan. While their relationship might not have been the healthiest, it worked for them. The world building around the Traveler community was so different and I really enjoyed the story. I would have liked to have seen more of Declan’s PoV in this book, but otherwise it was a fun read
Overall this was a solid 4 star read! I enjoyed the story and the characters! This book does have some potential triggers, so please check if you’re sensitive. This book is a fast burn and it continues throughout the book, so overall four flames for spice
If you’re a fan of dark romance with strong women, possessive men and found family vibes, then absolutely pick this one up!
I received an Advanced Reader Copy and am voluntarily reviewing it. Let me start by saying that I love how Ms. Thorne jumps into the dialect of her characters and commits throughout the book. Tessa Ward lives in a small town, Appleby. She lives in the house willed to her by her grandmother. During her childhood the time with her grandmother in Appleby were happy times. It is time for the Appleby Horse Fair. The fair brings travellers/gypsies to their small town. The town enjoys the money but are leery of this group. One look at Declan Furey and Tessa is a goner. Traveller or not, she cannot stay away.
Declan is feeling Tessa just as much as she is feeling him. So much so, he finds a way to stay in Appleby. Though not completely accepted by the traveller group, Tessa has fully embraced the lifestyle. Unfortunately, embracing the lifestyle means that Tessa loses her old friends. The town does not get it. Does it matter, though? The only people that matter is Declan and Tessa. Tessa shows herself to be valuable and gets accepted by most of the group. There is always one that spoils the fun for everybody. Will this person break up the happiness that Declan and Tessa have created for themselves? At the end of the day, this book is about people from very different worlds coming together and making it work. Hopefully, love will keep them together.
Tess meets Declan while working her shift at the bar. He's one of the notorious nomadic travellers that come around the town for the yearly festival. Declan takes an immediate interest in Tess, especially when she gives him a fake number. They start to entwine their lives, and before she realizes it, Tess is giving up everything for Declan and his way of life. His people aren't all thrilled, and when a confrontation turns ugly, Tess is faced with the possibility of Declan abandoning her for his way of life. Will their love be enough to save her?
When I saw one of my favorite fantasy authors wrote a dark romance, I didn't hesitate. Declan is morally gray goodness, and he knows it. Tess is innocent but gets dragged willingly into the darkness. Their unique opposites attrach dynamic puts a spin on things, with Tess getting thrown in to sink or swim. His unique brand of love is all-consuming, and that accent had me feeling some sort of way. I love how deeply and completely they fell for each other. Despite it not being the healthiest of circumstances, it ended up a great story. Another banger from this author!
Honestly, I didn't like Declan at the start of this one. He was a bit too arrogant for me and turned me off. But even though I didn't like him at the start, the story was so well written and intriguing that it kept me reading. Please note, I did start to like him, but it took me a couple chapters.
Declan and Tess kind of have a bit of a toxic relationship. Not in an abusive way, but Tess starts to push people away and forget the important things in her life. It shows how absorbed she got in this relationship that she let everything else fall away. His world is filled with a lot of chaos and violence and she kind of gets thrown into it. Even though there are these obstacles, they have intense chemistry with each other. The spice is off the charts.
It is a great story and a new one for me, as I have never read any books about travellers before, so this was an immersion into that. I highly recommend as it was a rollercoaster ride.
Tropes/ Triggers: Dark Romance, Morally Grey MC, Bad Boy, Forbidden Love, Found Family, He Falls First, Interracial Romance, one night stand, dominant MC, Blood & Violence, Swearing, Alcohol & Drug Use, Criminal Activity (Shoplifting, Arson, Mugging, Stabbing), Possessive, Obsessive & Controlling Behaviour, Morally Grey Cast of Characters, Bullying/Harassment, Etc.
So, this book exceeded my expectations. While every once in awhile Tess and Declan's relationship rubbed me the wrong way, I still loved them. It wasn't your conventional relationship, but it definitely worked for them. I loved that throughout the book, Tess remains her true strong self. It did take me a second for Declan to grow on me, and that's because I roll my eyes at the bad boy persona, lol. Literally, his character was great, and I loved reading his growth.
If you like your romances dark, your FMC spitfires, your MMC to match, and spice at the right times, this is the book for you.
Gah, I never knew I needed a rough around the edges, morally gray Irish traveler in my life until the wonderful K.L. Thorne sent me Furey Fire.
Declan Furey is the bad boy, Irish traveler who comes to Appleby for the horse fair and turns Tess's world upside down.
Travelers and the "settled" don't mix, but Tess isn't your typical "buffer". She's always had a bit of that wild-child in her and it's as if the two are destined to connect. When a weekend fling turns into several months, it's easy to see the bond that Tess and Declan share is unbreakable.
This book is deliciously steamy, and although there are bumps along the way, Tess and Declan get their HEA.
So, if you love morally gray MMCs and their loyal ladies, don't hesitate to snag this book!
PS-Don't be a jag and complain about the dialect. He's and IRISH traveler. It's essential and KL includes a glossary in the back of the book!
Wow! This was a great book. I won’t lie, the Irish dialogue was NOT easy to understand and I might have almost given up within the first 50 pages. But I’m not a quitter. Besides by the second Declan POV it gets easier to sort out.
Declan is an Irish traveler who’s come to Appleby for the horse fair. Only problem is he’s fallen in love with a settled girl named Tess.
Tess moved to appleby when her grandmother passed and left her the house, she always loved her time with gran and felt appleby was home. Until she met Declan and fell in love with not only him but his traveler ways.
I did enjoy this book quite a bit. I was worried there towards the end. I always crave that HEA. So I was happy to see it come to fruition. Declan’s got a temper. And sometimes I questioned him. He’s not perfect but I did love him. Tess could have used her communication skills a little better but she finally got her head out of her @$$ so that’s good.
The Appleby Horse Fair always brings in the Travellers, a group of nomadic people that are look at as troublemaker. This year Tess finds herself serving an Irish Traveller named Declan Furey who now has her in his sights.
This is a dark and twisted romance. Declan is very possessive of Tess. He isn't afraid to take what he wants even if that both excites and terrifies Tess. However, as she gets to know this man she finds herself helplessly drawn into his orbit.
This book is super spicy with an edge of noncon (I mean she kind of says no but when pushed she lets him do whatever he wants). Tess needed something different in her life and Declan offered that in spades.
I have to say it took me a but to get used to the way this was written and I had to let the screen reader read part of it before it made sense in my head. I commend the author for the written giving that Irish sound.
Buckle up my beauties this is a grey and bumpy ride with the traveler crew. Thankfully the author gave us a glossary of terms in the back to use but honestly the book was such a fast read I didn't notice it until I finished.
Tess is working in a small town when the annual horse fair passes through and boy does it bring some entertainment. One particular traveler Declan is full of quick wit and surprises as he decides to stay in town for a bit to see what Tess is all about. Tess may have bit off more than she can chew with this one but you better believe she is willing to try.
As always, check your trigger warnings. There are plenty of ups and downs and fast times had in this novel and I hope the rest of the guys get their own stories as well. This is a voluntary review based off of a free ARC copy received.
I enjoyed reading this dark romance. This is a newer author for me which I enjoyed their ability to pull me into the character's world with ease and held my attention to the end. This is a story that has some triggers but if you can get past them you will find an awesome read for sure. This is a well written story about Declan and Tess. From the time Tess meets Declan their relationship is full of passion but also pulls her into his dangerous life. Their life is full of violence and danger but also spicy as well. I enjoyed watching their growth throughout which made the story easy to read. Their attraction is page burning and one you do not want to miss. This is a fast paced, hard to put down story that I really enjoyed reading. I look forward to seeing what is next for this author. I highly recommend this must read book!
I’ve never read a Travellers romance before and I didn’t read the blurb before grabbing this one because KL is a one click read for more - always, but sweet baby Jesus, this book blew my mind and I’m now suffering from the worst book hangover in all of the best ways.
Dec is an Irish Traveller and Tess isn’t. They meet as Declan and his people are in town for a horse fair and their chemistry is off the rails right from their first encounter. This book isn’t clean or nice. It’s dirty, it’s raw and it feel authentic. I felt like I was in their story with them. I could not put this down. I even ordered dinner in so my kids dinner wouldn’t keep me away from their story. I hope there are more books coming from this world because has become one of my favourites reads of all time!
Furey Fire is the first book I have read by K.L. Thorne and I was not expecting all the exciting action, the scorching hot spice, and all the crazy drama. I am thankful for the glossary in the back of this book because has both British and Irish accents and man was it fun learning new words and terms. Now this book is a dark romance and touches on dark themes and topics. I thought the storyline was original and page-turning. The characters were complex and had an intense and obsessive chemistry. I thought Maeve was independent, witty, and stubborn. I loved the fight she put up when dealing with Declan. Declan was determined, a total Alpha-hole, and possessive. Their romance was a whirlwind and very intense. This book was amazing and I can't wait to see what this author releases next.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This was about Tess. She was working at a bar for Garrett. One day this group of guys came in and Declan could not take his eyes off of Tess. She was wasn’t giving him the attention he wanted. At the end of the night he asked for her number she gave him mostly the correct number he just didn’t know it was wrong. He was a traveller which meant he didn’t stay in one place too long. He and his best friend went everywhere together. They are from Ireland. But he decided to stick around for Tess. One day she ended up leaving because she thought she didn’t something he wouldn’t forgive her for. But weeks later she found out some information that changed her mind and she called her old phone by chance that Declan had it but his best friend did and told her to come back because Declan was a mess. So she did.
Holy...... wow. Talk about morally grey. I loved all the characters in this book. The MMC was extremely morally grey from the get-go, a traveller with a few darker hobbies. Kinda stalkerish and bordering on predatorial, but... hot daaamn! The FMC was morally grey from the start but nowhere near as intense as the MMC. Her character development went from questionably "good" girl to a bad girl in a matter of moments. The plot was awesome. It kept me engaged from the start, and those twists and turns I hadn't seen coming miles away but 10/10 worth it. There might be one or two moments where I cried our laughed out loud. I absolutely devoured this book. If you haven't read it yet and can sign up to ARC, read it. Please do! If not, try and be patient for release day!
This book is in my Top 3 Favourites... and it's number 1. It was amazing. This book drew me in from page 1, I couldn't put it down.
Declan is an Irish Traveller who is morally grey, obsessive, possessive, controlling, easily jealous, and covered in tattoos. Declan is THE book boyfriend. Tess is not a traveller, which I loved how it gave a slight forbidden feeling to their story (because nobody liked the travellers, and the travellers don't like her). Tess was strong, a little dark but she gets darker throughout the book.
I would like to address the smut in this book... Each time there was a smutty scene, I thought that it couldn't get any better than that - like that's hot. And then the next scene happened, and the next scene. This book kept getting spicier.
Didn’t know what I was getting into with the story. What I do know now is what an excellent, steamy, turbulent romance Furey Fire is. Good girl Tess has a bit of a reckless wild side to her personality, and is apparently what Declan didn’t know he was looking for. Declan is bold, morally grey, possessive and controlling. Upon meeting their chemistry is a spark that completely turns into a damn Inferno of passion and sexy spice. I love the development of the characters and the evolution of their relationship. The banter is fabulous. Their darkness speaks to one another, and their bond is undeniable. Captivated right from the start the twists and bumps along the road with the spicy goodness kept the pages turning . I enjoyed and definitely recommend this dark romance read.
The interaction between Tess and Declan was intense. They bordered on enemies to lovers. The attraction was instant and remained throughout the story. Interestingly, the story was considered multicultural since Declan was a traveler. I didn't understand why and how Tess allowed herself to be lost in Declan. She had been through so much, yet she fell back into bad habits when falling for Declan. This book explores many dark topics: drug use and womanizers, among others. It was hard for me to stay interested. It is a love story that goes into a rabbit hole before it allows you to see the light and the happy ending. The author did well with bringing the reader into the story and being able to know the characters. I wanted Tess to stand her ground and resist Declan.
Alright sisters, let’s get to it. I never thought i needed a morally grey irish traveler until this book. This book follows Tess, a bartender at a pub, and Declan, an irish traveler who turns her life upside down when he comes to Appleby for the horse fair. Tess is introduced into a world of violence and desire and she can’t get enough. When i tell you, this book is STEAMY. The drama at times makes the story more enjoyable. There are times where the dialect does become bothersome, but our queen K.L Thorne provided a glossary at the end of the book which makes it a lot more tolerable.
If you've ever been interested in the bad boy, then Declan Furey is your man! Just a morally grey, Irish traveler passing through. Meets Tess a settled girl with a wild streak. Enjoy the ride as their steamy romance grows and throws unexpected obstacles in their way. And interesting ways of traveler (gypsy) life!
The Irish dialect makes for fun banter. Although I wish, I would've know about the glossary of terms at the end before I finished the book. I struggled a bit in the beginning, the dialect slowing me down a bit. But quickly adapted and it made for such a fun read!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I was not sure what I was expecting when I first started reading this book but I was invested in it and couldn’t put it down. The main male character was everything I expected after meeting him but Tess the FMC was complex and personally she infuriated me with her actions but it shows how good the story was that it stirred up strong emotions whilst reading it.
It was well written and I could hear the accents in my head whilst reading. I would have liked some more backstory into Tess to understand her motivations and why she chose the way she did. Overall a great book.
Please note I received a free ARC copy but the review is entirely my own.
wow what a read!! reading more into the Irish travellers and how they live, yes its only a made up story but this book truly plays with your emotions going through all the stages!!!
got to admit I didn't expect it to go the way it did near the end with pearl but she had that coming! thank god she disappeared haha.
I loved the transition of Tess throughout the book. Being the naughty teen to getting herself into the situation and no longer being a 'wee settled.' I just love that despite what she had been through she was still happy!!
I could say so much more but the main this is you need to read this book!!
Fastest I've read a book in a long time! Loved these characters and found myself really rooting for them to find a way to make it work. Definitely leave your morals at the door, as there's plenty of questionable moments for both MCs! Male lead might sometimes be difficult to understand with Irish slang etc, but there is a glossary at the back provided by the author. Similar to Scottish vernacular though so I actually found it quite endearing ☺️ Content warnings are on the author's website, and while not particularly dark, there are moments of dubious intent that some might find troubling. Easy five star read for me though, no questions.
Y'all... I was like, dang!! This starts off with Tess at work at a bar the day before the fair starts and being warned about the gypsies or travelers like they are called in here. Declan comes in, and she puts him off and off. Then, she runs into him at the fair, and things happen and continue until his time to leave. Well, he doesn't because he can't see leaving her, but a whole ton of stuff happens, and they are tested. Eventually, they get their hea. This will keep you engrossed from beginning to end. So steamy and fun to read.
Burning🥵 hot 🥵 on fire,🔥 flames 🔥 How many words can I use to describe just how SPICY 🌶️ this book was! When travelers descend on Tess’s town and visit the bar she is working at, she catches the bad boys eye. Declan is the weekend fling that Tess was wanting but slightly nervous about but little did she know he would quite literally change her life. Declan is a literal red flag walking and Tess can’t resist but neither can Declan and that’s very new to him Definitely read the trigger warnings because there are definitely some dark themes.
Once I started reading this book, I couldn't put it down. Tess meets Declan whilst working in the local pub, he's in town visiting for the Appleby horse fair. This fair is well known for Gypsies & Travellers it attracts thousands every year. They soon become obsessed with one another, Tess learning the traveller way of life, embracing it but not accepted with some of the traveller girls, as Declan is a catch within the community. Not a great plot, but certainly entertaining and lots of drama. I enjoyed reading Furey Fire and will read more from K.L. Thorne in the future.
