S.B.Norton is a Speculative/Fantasy Fiction writer from Melbourne Australia. Has been a writer since 2009 and has five published novels to his name. Writing is pure escapism for him. The worlds he creates he escapes into often. He is a slow and fussy reader and is not a fan of dragons.
This is a steampunk/horror novel which brings those two genres together and gets them both right. I want to say right off the bat that I've never read anything steampunk. My knowledge of this genre is limited. The first couple of chapters took some getting used to. The word choices, names, and writing style were new to me but once that was processed, the rest of the novel went as any other and I quickly found myself lost in this world.
The narrative is fantastic. A rogue drug manufacturer is kidnapping homeless children to distribute his concoction, a drug which the kids blow in people's faces or slipped into their food and drinks. Immediately, this drug makes them do some horrible things, either to themselves or others.
In between the main narrative the author tells us about those things. Brutal, bloody, and horrific for the most part. And now this town seems to be overtaken with these violent Penchantments (as they're called).
A husband, wife, former drug runner, and others are trying to get to the bottom of this epidemic. And it's these characters which makes the novel such an engrossing entertaining read.
A horror story set in this steampunk world with a bit of "mad scientist" vibes and dark humor thrown in makes this a great book. I highly recommend it.
I received an ARC of this book from the author. This review is voluntary and is my own personal opinion.
