Chokehold!! This book had me in such a chokehold. For a smaller book, it sure did pack a huge punch. I honestly don't even know where to start!!! This book had so many elements between the depth of the situations and the relationships involved. The characters became addicting fast, and it did not take me long to fall fully into this plot. FULLY INVESTED!!
Annie is leaving an extremely dangerous and abusive marriage with her 3 year old daughter in tow, and that fear and pain is felt throughout this entire book. She is such a fighter and doing everything in her power to heal, but the depth of her trauma is so deep and dark that it starts to feel suffocating even to read. It was such a heart wrenching situation but she is so strong and working so hard to get back on her feet navigating so much pain and past trauma from her marriage and childhood you can't help but want to fight right next to her, and that is exactly how Casey felt when he found her. But she is so deep in trying to dig out of the absolute anguish her ex husband causes her, that when he tries to reach out to her, the ripple effect of his care for her, puts her healing process in motion in a way she never expected and there is no stopping it.
Casey is probably one of the best book boyfriends I've read about. He is such an amazing dichotomy of doting golden retriever, super protective, kind and sweet, but my God, when he turns into Dom mode, it had me squirming. The things this man said to her!! How he talked to her! I have to admit my heart was racing, lol. Amazing male lead. His touch, her qnd die aggression, and how he handled navigating getting her to open up to him, his patience, it was perfection. The way he fights for her is beautiful, and you can feel the obsession for her pouring off of him, and Annie needs that type of love so bad! The way they work together and compliment each other was so addicting.
The spicy scenes.. 10/10! So well done. So well placed. Drooling. Period. Casey is tops for Annie. Every scene! But the couch scene! and the limo scene!!! Myyyyyy Gawd!!!
The darkest part of this romance was the abuse Annie suffers at the hands of her soon to be ex-husband, whom she is running from. The way he is written made my throat tight. He disgusted me, and you could feel his manipulation leaking off the pages. I wanted to vomit at times listening to him and what he did to her. It's such a heavy portrayal of domestic abuse and so spot on in its aggression. The way she feels she has to placate him and how she feels pressured in her communications all to still try and not upset him to keep herself safe. It was so hard to read... and then the twist happened at the end, and my entire stomach fell out. I was gasping by the end. Just gasping!!! The end scene is so intense... I couldn't help but cry.
This book is amazing. The characters, the situations, the balance in the deeper storyline, and the spicy intimacy. It was funny, and the banter was so entertaining mixed into the dialog. You fall in love with everyone, and the plot just keeps plotting. It was such an emotional, spicey, intense good time! I am so happy I picked this up.
Happily skipping to book 2!!
