Love Love Love! I may come back and edit this as it is late and this is a book that I will surely need a few days to get over! In the best way!
I was so excited to receive the ARC for this book after finding out all of my favorite tropes in it! This is L.Taylor’s debut book as a self publishing indie author and I have been following her journey on social media in awe of all the hard work she has put into this!! I loved it so much and I’m excited to read anything else she has planned in the future!

Take a deep breath really digs into some sensitive, triggering topics like DV and SA but it is all executed in a respectful way to bring attention to some very serious issues. The story follows the FMC who is trying to raise her daughter, and support her family while she overcomes some PTSD from an abuse marriage. When the MMC, a real life golden retriever comes into her life after a brief encounter at one of the worst times in her life, he is finally able to sweet talk his way into her life. Over time he helps her heal from some the trauma she has endured and be given the Princess treatment she deserves.

Small notes:
•All of the Sleep Token mentions and references gave me a spark of happiness every time I read about them! I love the reading community behind this band when it’s done the right way & this is one of them done the right way!!

• Rain, the FMC’s daughter is absolutely precious and so well written in I could truly feel the love all of the characters have for her! I was nervous about a toddler/ child character in a book with these triggers but I was happy to know there was a line drawn and it was written in so well! **stand down everyone I’m not spoiling anything just know the sweet little girl is unharmed!!**

• Obviously I feel in love with Annie & Casey’s love story (fmc & mmc) but holy hot damn I was squealing about Cat & Tommy!! I want to start a petition for their book next!!

This book is so good! Loved all of the characters, especially Casey, he's a husband goals for me 🖤
I was blessed to ARC read it and it was everything I needed. Dark, spicy, funny, interesting!
It's L Taylor's debut book, and if this is the very first book she's ever written I can't wait to see more books from her, because she's a brilliant writer! 😍👌
The way the book is written is so good, and while reading, you literally forget about the world around you, you're not able to put the book down! 😍🔥

First off, wow. This is the third book that has ever made me cry. There’s just something about fmc’s overcoming tough situations that just pull at my heart strings. This book was nothing short of amazing. The plot was 10/10. The spice was spicing. Casey & Annie’s story was so heartfelt. I highly recommend adding it to your tbr/shelves! You won’t be disappointed. *Check trigger warnings* - SmutHutchArchives

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 / 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️

Take a Deep Breath by L. Taylor was our first read of the month in Indie Ink Society and let me just say it was a fantastic read!

This book is a journey of self discovery and self love after DV. Our FMC, Annie, proves to be an incredibly strong and good-hearted woman who puts everyone else above herself. Meanwhile our MMC, Casey, is the perfect balance between golden retriever, protector, and absolutely feral. 😌

There are some tough scenes that are both necessary to the story and respectfully done. The ending certainly had some shocking moments that really irk you. The spice is absolutely amazing, I mean seriously, props to Casey 🔥 We love to see a man helping his woman through her trauma. Overall, I thought the story was well-written and honestly quite healing by the end. I will definitely be reading book 2 ♥️

Also shout out to all of the Sleep Token references, because YES 🎶

Such a great read!

The layers to this story hit from the beginning and didn’t stop. The story moved fast, excitement and tension from the go, and the character development was solid! It hits on some sensitive topics so mind your trigger warnings but it was done so well. Give it a go - you won’t be disappointed.

Annie and her toddler, Rain, have been on the run from her abusive husband for the last year. Annie moved in with her mother and her sister, Cat, and is the sole breadwinner to make ends meet. By day, Annie is a nurse in a mental health facility, and by night she is a professional submissive at sex club and bar. Casey enters the chat as the security company hired for the club to add more security measures. When he finds out Annie works there, his need for her sprang, after already meeting her at the hospital his brother had been admitted to several times. Casey sneaks his way into her night job to start a whirlwind romance with the girl of his dreams.
TW: extreme domestic violence (it is described, so read at your own risk), heavily described sexual scenes, BDSM vibes.

Overall, the plot of this book is certainly interesting and has some of my favorite side characters (Tommy and Cat, say no more). I will say this book fell into the 'cringey' place for me once Casey and Annie become a thing. Casey uses 5-6 different nicknames and he begins using them in every single sentence. The spice factor is quite good and a very impression combination of spice and plot, which will always do well in my opinion.

Heartbreakingly good!

Wow!!! So I found this book and author because of TikTok and I’m so glad it did!!! I loved the characters and how protective Casey is over Annie and Rain. It’s not super super dark but definitely read the trigger warnings and take them to heart, some scenes will stay with me for awhile. My heart broke for the FMC!! Some parts were just so sad and I chuckled on other pages! I can’t wait for book 2. I really hope it’s about Tommy and Cat because Tommy was top tier funny! It’s a HEA, no cliffhanger story that will gut you and make your heart hurt and then Casey will put you back together again and again and again! And let’s not forget the spicy was 👌🏼😮‍💨 idk about you all but I love a MMC who’s controlling in all the right ways and still gives up his power to his girl! Well done L. Taylor I loved this!

100%, hands down, one of the best books I’ve read in a while. It wasn’t full of filler fluff, but an amazing storyline. Definitely read the trigger warnings, but being able to follow Annie on her journey towards healing & finding Casey to be all she needed. Oh man, just read this book. You won’t regret it & you won’t forget it!

This review is quite personal for me. As a survivor of DV, I related to this book on so many levels! The way this was written captured exactly the way I felt while this was happening to me, it was like the author was inside my head and understood my feelings and emotions. I found myself not triggered by what I was reading, because I rarely get triggered, but I found myself empathising with the FMC Annie and could feel her pain and hurt.
Casey came along, the strong minded dominant but sexy as heck security guy to make Annie see the way she should be treated and loved. This also mirrors my life. It was honestly uncanny!
The violent scenes are very descriptive so if you have triggers, just consider your mental health here but the book was so well written that it honestly made me cry with sadness for the FMC but also cry with happiness to see her healing journey all the way.
Now, the spice was exquisite! There is some light kink but a little more than simple slap n tickle lol but oh my godssss the mouth on Casey is delicious 😅 he knows all the right words to say to satisfy anyone with a praise kink and his dominant side was absolutely perfect in the way that he was commanding and knew what he wanted but was so in control but in a loving and sensual way. He was the perfect man for Annie and was able to give her everything she needed to feel whole again. I love the fact that aftercare was spoken about and not left out because that’s often the case in stores and real life sadly.
The natural progression of this storyline was really enjoyable to read and who doesn’t love a happy and slippery ending 😅
I really liked the side characters of Cat and Tommy, the siblings of each of these main characters and I was hoping they’d find each other!
Very much looking forward to the next book in the series which I assume is these siblings of Casey and Annie, because the two of them seem like firecrackers and I can just imagine the epic banter and chemistry!

“Do your worst, baby girl.”

Take a Deep Breath by L. Taylor is a beautifully told soul deep story. If you have ever experienced DV in anyway, you’ll see this bite sized book for what it truly represents.

✨Annie is our FMC, and is one heck of strong woman. Even after being made to come face to face with her abuser, she stands strong in her convictions. Rain may be her first priority, but she’s also taking time to let herself heal. And that is something you don’t find in a lot of romance books. Get ready for Annie to carve out her own little nuke in your heart.

✨Casey is the MMC we all love and need. He’s not only a master in the sheets, but cares for Annie only the way someone how loves you to your bones would. Mindful of her past, but is willing to do anything to make Annie and her daughter his future. Casey definitely belongs on your book boyfriend list.

With twist I didn’t see coming, genuine spice, love you not only see on the page but feel in your blood, and the way my hair died of happiness with how Casie takes care of Rain… you NEED to stop reading this review and just get it already.

3.5 ⭐️. I think the author addressed some really tough subjects (SA, DV) in a thoughtful manner that doesn’t gloss over them. I found the FMC’s family interesting and lovable. I also enjoyed the multiple POVs (both FMC and MMC). I would say the pacing was just a little off for me. Maybe I’m more of a slow burn person, but they went from 0-60 a bit too quickly for it to feel realistic for me. I think the book could have been a bit longer to flesh out the relationship a bit in the beginning. Overall, I did really enjoy the story and I’m looking forward to the second installment.

We read this for our Indie Ink Society book club, and I absolutely loved it. This book gave me all the emotions and had me hooked from the beginning. I ended up devouring it in 2 days! I liked the character of Annie because she was so relatedable. A loving mother who's trying to do the best for her baby. I absolutely loved the mmc, Casey! He was super Swoon Worthy and had the dark side. Perfect balance of both!🔥 I can't wait for book 2!

This is a beautiful dark romance story with hard topics but written so well. Check your triggers warnings, there is a lot of domestic violence. I loved this story from start to finish so much so I struggled to put it down. Without giving to much away it follows Annie whose a victim of dv and her story of healing and how she deals with/ copes with it. The writing is captivating and L.Taylor delivers a truly amazing story.

I am astounded with this book. Dark romance with domestic violence written so beautifully. I might add that there is some thriller aspects as well. I dealt with many emotions while reading this book. I was enthralled from the beginning and even had moments that my heart was pounding and I couldn’t wait to turn the page. I laughed, cried, yelled and threw my hands in the air all throughout. I found this author of tiktok, and I am so glad I did! Aside from the sweet names (that's just a personal preference), there wasn't anything that bothered me with this book.

Very well written, no loose ends, I love how everything tied into each other! I don't normally read books like this, but I very much loved it!

Chokehold!! This book had me in such a chokehold. For a smaller book, it sure did pack a huge punch. I honestly don't even know where to start!!! This book had so many elements between the depth of the situations and the relationships involved. The characters became addicting fast, and it did not take me long to fall fully into this plot. FULLY INVESTED!!

Annie is leaving an extremely dangerous and abusive marriage with her 3 year old daughter in tow, and that fear and pain is felt throughout this entire book. She is such a fighter and doing everything in her power to heal, but the depth of her trauma is so deep and dark that it starts to feel suffocating even to read. It was such a heart wrenching situation but she is so strong and working so hard to get back on her feet navigating so much pain and past trauma from her marriage and childhood you can't help but want to fight right next to her, and that is exactly how Casey felt when he found her. But she is so deep in trying to dig out of the absolute anguish her ex husband causes her, that when he tries to reach out to her, the ripple effect of his care for her, puts her healing process in motion in a way she never expected and there is no stopping it.

Casey is probably one of the best book boyfriends I've read about. He is such an amazing dichotomy of doting golden retriever, super protective, kind and sweet, but my God, when he turns into Dom mode, it had me squirming. The things this man said to her!! How he talked to her! I have to admit my heart was racing, lol. Amazing male lead. His touch, her qnd die aggression, and how he handled navigating getting her to open up to him, his patience, it was perfection. The way he fights for her is beautiful, and you can feel the obsession for her pouring off of him, and Annie needs that type of love so bad! The way they work together and compliment each other was so addicting.

The spicy scenes.. 10/10! So well done. So well placed. Drooling. Period. Casey is tops for Annie. Every scene! But the couch scene! and the limo scene!!! Myyyyyy Gawd!!!

The darkest part of this romance was the abuse Annie suffers at the hands of her soon to be ex-husband, whom she is running from. The way he is written made my throat tight. He disgusted me, and you could feel his manipulation leaking off the pages. I wanted to vomit at times listening to him and what he did to her. It's such a heavy portrayal of domestic abuse and so spot on in its aggression. The way she feels she has to placate him and how she feels pressured in her communications all to still try and not upset him to keep herself safe. It was so hard to read... and then the twist happened at the end, and my entire stomach fell out. I was gasping by the end. Just gasping!!! The end scene is so intense... I couldn't help but cry.

This book is amazing. The characters, the situations, the balance in the deeper storyline, and the spicy intimacy. It was funny, and the banter was so entertaining mixed into the dialog. You fall in love with everyone, and the plot just keeps plotting. It was such an emotional, spicey, intense good time! I am so happy I picked this up.

Happily skipping to book 2!!

But everyone needs a release and Annie finds hers by working as a submissive at the exclusive adult club called Masquerade. And that’s where she meets him…Casey Easton. Everything is flipped on its head. For the first time ever, constant fear is replaced with a feeling of protection. Being cared for. Of being unconditionally loved. And lusted over. All the time. Then—like clockwork—when things are going so perfectly, her estranged husband starts his usual games. Except the games he plays are violent. Jealous. Dangerous. Now if they can just survive the psychopathic rage of the man who still hunts her…

REVIEW:
Take a Deep Breath is the first book in the Breathless Duet series. It is a dark romance that deals with domestic violence and it is also the debut novel of L. Taylor. Annie Baker has left her abusive soon to be ex-husband to try to rebuild her life with her mother, sister and daughter. Casey Easton owns a security company that happens to be contracted to beef up the security for the adult club called Masquerade. Annie and Casey had briefly met when he was visiting his brother at the hospital psych ward where she works as a nurse. When Annie flashed back to when she first met Casey felt to me like such a meet cute moment as he just came up to her to ask her for a date and handed her his card in case she changed her mind when she turned him down.

The moment that Casey surprised Annie at their first scheduled session at Masquerade was when I knew that this encounter would change both of them forever as this was a second chance for both to find true love. But now they have a second chance encounter that will lead them both on the journey to healing and having the love of a lifetime together. It was such a sad moment to read how when Annie sees Michael again it just brings back those feeling of wanting to be herself but how he ends up trying to erase who she is. When Annie realized that she was finally going to leave the trauma of her past to live the beautiful life that she had pictured when Casey had asked her on a date was an emotional moment that had me a bit breathless.

At the start there are some trigger warnings for those who may need them which I felt wouldn't deter me from enjoying the story that had me intrigued. This was such a beautifully written fast-pace dark romance novel that at times left me breathless with such intense scenes both of domestic violence but mostly spicy intimate moments between Annie and Casey. I loved that they both got their HEA which was written to show them in various moments of their lives after the main story ended.

Thoughts
I really enjoyed this book. I liked how the relationship with Annie and Casey blossomed throughout the book. I really felt bad for Annie’s story but I loved that she grew from her struggles and learned to use her voice again. Casey was such a lover and protector. He gave her “everything” she needed and I’m here for it!

I found myself yelling out loud at some of the parts that could be triggering to some. Picture some crazy lady yelling at the big screen at the movies. That’s how I felt LOL. Anywho….. OMG the plot twist hit me out of nowhere and had me jumping off my couch! I almost threw my kindle. Don’t worry, I didn’t!
