Having a son who is profoundly autistic for several years now (14), I found this book to be somewhat helpful for families new to the autistic community. Much of the book seems to be geared for the mild to moderate spectrum, but thinking outside of the box, one can apply some of the examples to the profound community as well.
I would recommend this book to both new autistic families and to those who are typical looking for a place to start.
A very good introduction to the signs, symptoms and behaviors of autistic children. The information in this book seems based more on a communicative child, however, and I don't think most of the book would be very useful to a parent of a child with severe autism, although there are very good suggestions and references for all areas of the spectrum. The author has Aspergers, and therefore has great insight on what goes through the mind of an autistic person - the advice is thoughtful and sound. The organization is a bit simplistic, but that's a benefit here - you can flip through to the issues that concern you most. A great reference for parents, and great advice on how to deal with parenting issues such as discipline and behavioral therapy. I especially recommend this book for anyone who has contact (parents, family, teachers) with anyone with higher functioning Autism.
This is a solid, informative book on autism. I'm impressed with the hopeful approach the author offers in answering so many of my questions. The author, having Asperger's syndrome himself, understands and relates to the topic on a more personal level. He focuses on three tenets for success: 1)presume intellect 2)practice prevention instead of intervention 3)foster self-advocacy. I highly recommend this book with it's insightful approach at looking at autism as "...a unique and different way of being, a natural variation of the human experience."
Very easy reading. The Author is not only a credible source but is also on the Autism Spectrum himself, diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome. It answers every question I could think of, and more importantly the questions in my mind/heart that I could not formulate the words for. By the time you close the book you will have a deeper understanding about ASD's and a greater love, respect, and admiration for those affected by the disorder. Loved it.
This book encourages parents to be proactive to prevent problems associated with autism, to foster self-advocacy in autistic children, and to always presume intelligence, even in cases where a child may be nonverbal. Together, these themes form a philosophy of dealing with autism that is respectful, accepting and positive. This book is also very thorough, with sections on all aspects of raising or working with autistic children. An excellent resource.
This boom is amazing for the last 5 years I have read it over and over again. It's a big help when dealing with a son with autism, it's also great for therapists and family or friends to read also, LOTS OF INFO!
