Probably more 3 1/2. Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy of this, the story kept me gripped and the writing was overall really good. Definitely worth a read !
I want to give a huge thank you to Anthony McFly for reaching out and sending me a copy of this book to read!
I was not expecting the story to go the way it did considering how the book started off, but I can say it kept my attention throughout. What an interesting story!
Amaury as a character was unique, to say the least. Sometimes you understand his thought process, and others he goes on to say the more outlandish things. So odd, but in a good way.
This is going to be the twelfth book that I've finished reading for this year. I got a digital copy from the author himself (@anthony.mc.fly), to read and share my thoughts.
Here we go:
Hungry Eyes chronicles the events of a single night in the life of a university student in Bordeaux, France. The initially nameless narrator, (later revealed as Amaury) is an exceptional and hardworking student who discovered a new hobby when a new neighbor moved-in across the street and opened his windows: an instant live show for him.
At first, just a harmless watching of this hot, leather-jacket-wearing neighbor, this curiosity evolved into an alarming obsession.
On this particular night, things took a different turn: the usual noneventful voyeurism turned into a nighttime adventure of chasing after his hot neighbor as well as facing his personal demons (hair, words, other people) leading to a very important decision that will chart the rest of his life.
I personally enjoyed reading this short book (167 pages), it reminds me of "You" by Caroline Kepnes. The narrator is hands down unlikeable but one can feel pity with his personal demons; not gonna lie, the details and research regarding hair frustrated me so much that I can feel part of the insecurity Amaury is feeling. For me, this complimented the mapping of the narrator's character.
As the night pulls away and dawn creeps in, the story ends with numerous confrontations and revelations, trickling down to the very moment Amaury has been imagining for all this time; and I am satisfied with how it all ended.
“I don’t know anything about this guy, except that he lives in my street and in my mind.”
Thanks so much to Anthony McFly for sending me a copy of his novel, which was recently translated from the French by a friend of his. It was definitely a wild ride, and I wondered where he was going to take the story!
Amaury is a young man who lives a solitary life. He works hard on his studies and is anxious about the fact that he’s losing his hair at a young age. But what gets most of his attention is the handsome man who lives in the apartment directly across the street from his.
“…his inability to live in an enclosed space gives me full access to see deep inside the interior of his home.”
Amaury watches the man every day, and in fact, every night he turns off his lights so he can watch without the possibility of being noticed. He dreams of a life with his neighbor and hopes that one day he’ll notice him. One night, after watching the man getting closer to a date, Amaury decides to follow them, and winds up having an awkward yet eye-opening evening.
This was well-written and certainly a bit creepy. You don’t know whether to feel sorry for Amaury or worry about what he’s capable of. I definitely needed to read this in one sitting!
I absolutely love when authors reach out to offer a copy of their book, and you can tell that they actually considered your tastes and thought you would like it. When this author messaged to offer me a copy of his novella - "it's a gay award winner" - recently translated from the original French, I was immediately intrigued!
Hungry Eyes is about a man with an unusual pastime, and his unique perspective makes him a fascinating narrator. The story takes place over one evening, with flashbacks for context. The writing is absolutely beautiful, with perfect pacing. Credit goes both to the author and the translator for capturing his story so well. It is quite impressive that so much poignant narrative is contained within just over 160 pages.
This book is one of those that feels just a little uncomfortable when you're reading it, in that deliciously compelling way. It's the perfect blend of dark concepts with a slice-of-life storyline about a gay man at university. I found it reminiscent of L'Étranger, with a main character who sits on the edge of society and seems content to be there.
The ending was sheer perfection. It's not where I thought the story would go, maybe not even where I hoped it would go, but it was an incredible choice.
First of all, thanks to the author for sending me a copy in return for an honest review, and I'm nothing if not honest. 😉
Before I start, I just need to get the following words out: "Stalker alert!!"
The story is about a college student with a very low self-esteem, notable by his devastation at losing his hair and trying all remedies. Aumary, as he is known, has picked up a habit for spying on his neighbour, spending countless nights sitting at his window and making notes on this stranger he has fallen inlove with. One night his "beloved" leaves his own apartment with another man, not being able to stand it, Aumary follows them to spots he would not normally go to, in order to ensure he doesn't lose the man of his dreams.
In all honesty the main character frustrated me immensely. I just wanted to grab him and shake, get his head out of the clouds and back to reality, making him realize that what he is doing isn't normal, its "harassment". Written to complete a whole night's activities we experience different settings. In all it wasn't bad. I just know if I was being watched like this, I'd run.
💙Blurb- "I don't know anything about this guy, except that he lives in my street… and my mind." A lonely, young man spies on his neighbour every day. This is the story of an evening in his life. Of the evening of his life. 💚 Review - This was such an interesting and fascinating read. The author's writing is brilliant and draws you in from the very first page. There were plenty of twists and turns to keep me interested and guessing until the end. The pacing was just right and there was a great cast of characters. Being a short novel, I couldn't put it down and I read it in one sitting. I highly recommend it and I look forward to reading more by the author. 💝 Thank you to the author for my ebook copy of the book in exchange for an honest review
Thank you to the author, Anthony McFly, who sent me a copy of his book to read.
Hungry Eyes is narrated from the perspective of Amaury, a young man who develops a fixation with his neighbour who he can watch from his own home.
Amaury watches the man and keeps detailed logs of his comings and goings. One evening he decides to follow him. The book then delves into the journey Amaury takes to learn more about the man who has fascinated him.
This book is beautifully written and translated from French. It totally captivated me. I really enjoyed the ending as it was unexpected and I love a book that does that! Highly recommended!
A fabulous read! I just couldn't put this book down, I had to read it in one sitting. I imagined a certain ending but the author surprised with a different one. You will lose yourself in this book. Highly recommended.
