Thank you Netgalley for the ARC! :) I vaguely remember reading a bit of this when it first came out on Webtoons thinking it had some decent enough legs on it. I'm glad it was enjoyed enough to warrant a printing.
The story and writing here is good. It reminds me a lot of Centaurworld on Netflix with its mix of cutesy whimsy (unicorns, gnomes, etc.) mixed with a darker setting (zombies, vampires, etc.). The blend of the two types of supernatural works really well here especially with the really interesting Horsemen of the Apocalypse (though the famine aspect felt really weak to me). The comedic moments read well and the action is engaging. It all does feel a bit with safety mitts but part of that is this seems to be written for a slightly younger YA demographic so I get having to avoid certain intensities.
It also reminds me of Centaurworld because it reads like a cartoon in its writing and pacing. The pacing is ok though a bit quick especially with the bigfoot and the pegasi plotpoints. But overall it’s a nice quickly faced adventure that by the end got me invested in the main crew. I do wish we got just one more chapter as where it ended felt pretty abrupt even for its cliffhanger ending. But I imagine that is where season one of the webtoon ended so the next chapter might not be written to serve as a good ending chapter.
My same sentiment about the similarities to Centaurworld carries over to the art. It's cartoony and seems to partially use some sort of bank of bases, rigging, or something similar? It's not too bad and panels still breathe with life where too much rigging normally saps life from a panel. But there are other sections where it feels really awkward and stilted like a jpg of “character standing at X angle / perspective” was just plastered in there.
Of course as an adaptation of a Webtoon I would be remiss to not talk about how it was adapted into a traditional page layout. It works well enough. Some panel layouts are a bit sparse or repetitive but there isn't much they can do. I mean they have to do with the panels meant to be read continuously vertically. It does have a fair bit of blank space and sometimes it handles it well with thematic background instead of white space but I feel it doesn't do it enough. As it went on though that seemed to be less of a problem (maybe the page layout person got better at it as it went on?). I also don't think the artist didn’t exactly expect to get a novel printing as some “money panels” would definitely have served from being borderless and taking the full page. But instead it's all boxed in and few take up big page space. Maybe it was a pixel quality issue though? I'd definitely take smaller panels of blowing a panel beyond what its pixels were meant for and getting blurry messes.

If you’ve consumed any type of zombie apocalypse media, the storyline of Hooves of Death will feel familiar: a band of survivors on the run, unexpected encounters with other groups, secrets and betrayals, and the possibility of a chosen one who might hold the key to ending the apocalypse. The pacing is fast and energetic, matching the constant motion of the main characters. The twist? All of this unfolds in a world of unicorns, brought to life in a vivid, slightly exaggerated art style reminiscent of classic Cartoon Network animation.

This first volume is mostly about setting the stage. The origin of the zombie outbreak is hinted at only briefly, through a single, vague flashback. There’s early groundwork laid for a broader mythology involving the Four Horsemen and mystical pegasi. Several characters are presumed dead off-page, leaving room for potential surprise returns in future volumes. And beneath the fantasy and action lie moments of deeper reflection: what it means to live during catastrophe, the tension between survival and truly living, and themes of sacrifice, trust, and friendship.

Aside from the unicorn twist, it still feels a bit early to know what Bragg’s unique take on this well-worn formula will be, but I’m intrigued enough to pick up the next volume when it releases.

Best suited for a pre-teen to early teen audience, though readers on either side of that range may also find plenty to enjoy.

Thanks to HarperAlley and NetGalley for providing an advance reading copy.

I really enjoyed this, but it was THICK and it’s only the first volume. It was a lot to take in all in one go. It did a great job of leaving enough curiosity to need to read the next one to get answers, so that was good.

Takes the somewhat silly premise of unicorns fighting zombies very, very seriously.

My little pony meets the walking dead! This was so much fun! I picked this up based on the cover alone and my love for the short story collection zombies vs unicorns.

The pacing is quick and the world is explained in a very digestible way. For being a younger readers graphic novel I was super entertained by darker plot-lines and I can’t wait to continue! The artwork was so much fun and I loved all of the different mythical creatures in this story and the different spins the creators put on them.

I would super recommend this graphic novel and I look forward to adding a physical copy to my collection! I felt like this bind up from webtoon stopped at a great point to leave me wanting to continue.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an advanced reader copy

Hooves of Death: Volume 1 by Sam Bragg is a middle grade horror fantasy post-apocalyptic graphic novel. The zombie outbreak has happened and humanity is hanging on by a thread when the unicorn military comes in to help. Glitter is determined to do her part and offers to scout the area for more food. When she goes out, she doesn't find food, but instead finds a young girl who could be the key to everything.

This is taking a lot of lore and fantasy creatures and doing something new with them. Unicorns in a post-apocalyptic setting is already very cool, but adding that some of them were the chosen steeds of the four horsemen of the apocalypse and that pestilence is still looking for theirs adds another twist. There's also ruthless pegasi who have managed to keep the zombie outbreak out and a group of sasquatches who are trying to undo the zombie plague.

The palette balances out the darker setting with the bright colors that we so often associated unicorns with, pleasing that young reader who is into the aesthetics of My Little Pony but also wants to dip their toes into horror. It's not overly busy and takes a more minimalist approach to let the fantastical really shine.

The friendship between Glitter and Kate evolves through them protecting each other even when the other says not to. They have a strong bond roughly halfway through this volume and they are saving each other out of genuine love and care rather out of a sense of obligation or returning the favor. We get a little bit into how the zombie outbreak might have started from Glitter's POV and if that is indeed what happened, it makes sense that she would be so protective of Kate from the start because she already failed to protect another young girl.

I would recommend this to fans of MG horror who also loved My Little Pony and readers of graphic novels looking for something combining the darker and lighter elements of speculative fiction

Unicorns, zombies, and the end of the world. Add in found family, a slow growing romance, excellent art and world building, and this is a comic I really want everyone to read. The art is lovely; while the unicorns bleed rainbow blood these are no cute and cuddly kids toys. They’re strong, fast, and just as angry and lost at what’s happening around them as the humans are.

Glitter is slowly coming into her own as a leader while Blaze, a unicorn more versed in healing than violence, loves her quietly from a distance. Then there’s Kate, the child Glitter rescues, who has lost everyone — parents, friends, humanity itself — who goes from wanting nothing to do with unicorns to seeing them as her new family, Silver, a unicorn who had given up on being forgiven, and Grimm, the dog shaped being who wants to kill Kate and the occasional visits from Famine, and it’s a road trip through a dying world. Sirens, bigfeet, vampires, pegasi, gryphons … it’s a bright, colorful world of chaos and carnage and it’s wonderful. I loved every minute.

Please read this comic! And thank you so much to Net Galley and the publisher for the ARC!

For more bookish opinions, visit my blog: Craft-Cycle

The worlds of fantasy, the paranormal, and the apocalyptic collide in this graphic novel about a zombie outbreak and the team of unicorns that sets out to save what remains of humanity.

This is definitely different than I was expecting. I thought it would take a more humorous approach, but the story dives into some dark elements including famine, plague, and questions of morality. As one would except from a zombie story, there is violence, complete with rainbow unicorn blood, and death.

The artwork is really cool. A nice blending of magical and apocalyptic elements. I am especially fascinated by the zombie versions of different mythical creatures.

A unique story with some really interesting elements at play. There's a lot going on here, which makes for an engaging read.

I'm looking forward to the next volume. Interested to see what happens next.

This book is my new favorite graphic novel! The complexity of each character was outstanding, which is difficult to accomplish just through dialogue and images. But the author did an incredible job of developing each character and giving us a glimpse into some of the moral dilemmas and inner conflicts the characters were experiencing. Each mythological character that was introduced was so exciting to read about and see how they all interacted with each other. The way the author embodied those creatures was creative and thoughtful. My favorite was the Bigfoot (I knew they'd be healers and caretakers!). I've been recommending this book to all of the teachers, middle school students, and librarians whom I associate with! I'm excited to read the next book when it comes out!

This book was awesome. I love the concept of the mystical beasts of myth all being a part of trying to survive the apocalypse. I loved the magic system and that the legend of the four horsemen was involved instead of it being a more mainstream zombie take. The story line was engaging and I was even pleasantly surprised to see an illustration with a road sign that I have seen in real life many times! My favorite part is the illustrations. For me they were a mix of Last Unicorn meets Scooby Doo and I absolutely loved it!! I cannot wait for Vol 2 and to see what happens with Kate and Glitter and to see if those sasquatch make a vengeful appearance!

3.5/5 heehee, this was fun!

Whimsy and fun and chaos and violence.

This story is set during a zombie apocalypse and there are unicorns and big foot and demonic wolf things and dragon-looking creatures and vampires and sirens/mermaids and magic and so much more!

This art style was really fun and it reminded me of a mix between Scott Pilgrim and My Little Pony.

I don't know what else to say about this other than it was a fun time, I was entertained, and I really enjoyed the art. If you're looking for something unlike a comic you've ever read before, I would give this a try!

Thanks to NetGalley for the e-ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review!

Mythical creatures are real and the apocalypse is happening.

Seargeant Glitter is sent out to scout outside the magical perimeter to seek food for their camp. What the Seargeant doesn’t expect find is a little girl named Kate that needs her help. After returning to the camp, while emotions are high, the worst happens: the perimeter has been breached by the zombies. Is there anywhere that is safe anymore?

This was a heartfelt kid’s graphic novel that I think anyone could enjoy. The dialogue could be better, but overall, it was a read filled with lots of magical monsters and a lot of feels.

A combination of cute unicorns that bleed rainbows in search of a way to save the world, and a dystopian world of zombies, killer mermaids, vampires and gnomes, and the four horsemen of the apocalypse. This is pretty dark, with blood and death and a LOT of grimness, so it could easily be in our teen section. But it is contrasted with the magical good unicorns, and their friendship with a mysterious human that the horsemen of the apocalypse all say is somehow the savior of the world. This book reminded me of "Death & Sparkles" with the combination of cute with darkness, but this is darker and bloodier.

This work is a masterclass in atmospheric storytelling, immediately pulling the reader into a world that feels both hauntingly familiar and entirely original. The author demonstrates an exceptional ability to balance high-stakes tension with quiet, introspective moments that allow the characters to feel authentic and deeply human. What stands out most is the masterful pacing; every chapter serves a purpose, building toward a conclusion that is as surprising as it is emotionally earned. It is rare to find a book that manages to be both a gripping page-turner and a profound exploration of complex themes like legacy and resilience, making it an essential read for anyone who appreciates literary depth

Received Netgalley arc.
Fantastic story for volume one. It gives me the vibes of the comic “Feral” but of course, not centered around cats but unicorns. It is really cool to see mythical creatures and cryptids make an apperance along these already fantastical creatures. The stakes are high and there is no one you can really trust, making this a suspenseful but hopeful journey for the main characters. The end is, left on a cliff hangers as to what they will do next and I am excited to see what happens next.

Thank you, Netgalley, the author, and Harper Collins Children's books for the gifted e-book! ❤️ #gifted. My review is comprised of my honest thoughts.

Read this book if you like: Apocalypse, fast reads, horror, found family, romance

I really enjoyed this. It was a fun and fast-paced zombie novel with unicorns. There were many aspects of this, romance, horror, fantasy, and more. The magic system was great and easy for someone that doesn't read much fantasy. I highly recommend it!

I liked this book. It has a lot of familiar themes, settings and story arcs, but also is new and fresh. There are parts I did not like, parts I loved and one or two areas I went "huh?"  There are ups and downs. I wouldn't go younger  than 10 (though younger could read, I'm not sure of content compatibility), but the older side of the 10 and up would be best. Adults could read, too. While it is young and cartoonish at times, there was something serious and mature about it as well. There is a lot going on and the note we end on was frustrating as I am now WTF HAPPENS NEXT!!!!?????!!!!!

Wow, this is dark.
Post apocalyptic unicorns vs zombies with vampires, Sirensn Bigfoots(Bigfeet?), and a host of other creatures. And a chosen one to boot.

The art is neat, although a little blocky. The characters are well fleshed out and the story is complex.

Recommended for my friend's goth pre-teens and similar readers.

Zombie apocalypse—but with unicorns and mystical beings! This wild story mixes the chaos of the end of mankind with the four horsemen, sirens keeping men captive as their “boyfriends,” and all sorts of other crazy twists. At the heart of it all, a group of unicorns and one human girl are on a dangerous journey to find Death himself—all while just trying to survive. The art captures the atmosphere perfectly and really brings this unique world to life. I can’t wait to see where the next book takes us!

As a woman who grew up as a girl who collected unicorns, but also sometimes had them go to war with dinosaurs, I have zero major complaints, but a bunch of small quibbles about pacing. I did really enjoy the incorporation of the idea of the horsemen of the apocalypse. I understand that I could read more on WebToons right now to figure out what happens after this edition leaves off, but I really dislike the vertical scroll, so I'll wait.

Thank you to NetGalley for this eARC.

This book is amazing! My 8 year old can read but reads really slow because she HAAAAAAATES reading. It’s really hard to find books she’ll read. Not only did she read this one but she read it all in one day! She highly recommends it! My 13 year old also finished it in a day! He loved it too! Absolutely would recommend it for reluctant readers and kids that love reading alike! Highly recommend it!

More fun than expected! It’s messy and the art style is hit or miss for me. I’m not a zombie fan so I was super glad we have other elements - cryptids and horsemen etc. It grew on me as it went, definitely has some of the webtoon flaws and reading it straight through as a book maybe isn’t the best format, but I’m invested!

What an amazing graphic novel to start the new year with. I got this completely on a whim because I love unicorns and horror, and it was so worth the buy!
The art is beautiful and chock full of expressions, reminiscent of the Cartoon Saloon style. I fell in love with the main cast so much so that the ending was incredibly cruel 😭

So hyped for more!!!

I didn't expect this to be as doom laden-ly post-apocolyptic as it was. The tone of the book and the depth of it's world building were a pleasant suprise.

While I have little or no intention of going forward with this series, I'm glad I read this volume.
