About the author

Vystudoval moderní filologii na katedrách anglistiky a nordistiky na FF UK v Praze (1986–1992), v letech 1992–2000 pracoval jako redaktor v nakladatelství Mladá fronta, od roku 2001 v nakladatelství Argo, kde rok zastával funkci šéfredaktora.
Vydal šest románů, několik novel a sbírku povídek; jeho knihy byly přeloženy do němčiny, španělštiny, holandštiny, maďarštiny, ruštiny a italštiny. Napsal také divadelní hry (Trochu lásky a Nože a růže) a několik povídek otištěných v různých časopisech (např. Host) a v povídkových knihách nakladatelství Listen.

Musím se přiznat, že mě malinko překvapilo nízké hodnocení na Goodreads. Přičítám to buď komunitě, kterou tvoří mladší lidé preferující young adult (jednodušší počtení), nebo prostě tomu, že to není knížka pro každého a že na ni člověk musí mít náladu. Ale považte - nádherná čeština (já vím, psát květnatě se dnes nenosí), složitá kompozice vystavěná na hranicích mysteriózního románu, historického románu a detektivky (složitost, to se dnes taky nenosí), reflexe současného přístupu k historii, k životu, melancholický masox plný dnešního člověka uzavřeného v pasti šedivé reality, bez jistot, bez cíle. Není to akční četba ve stylu vražda, sex, vražda, napětí tu funguje na jiném levelu, na přirozené zvědavosti z toho, jak to celé ve skutečnosti je, na jakém principu tato roztříštěná mozaika funguje. Střet hodnot starých a nových.

Doporučuji, zejména těm, kteří běžně čtou třeba fantastiku a marně hledáte současného autora z kruhu "vyšší literatury", kterého byste si mohli přečíst. Je to složité, pro běžného čtenáře možná hodně "what the fuck" (mně upřímně to tak ani nepřišlo, nějak jsem se s románem sžila, do té míry, že se dívám po starých domech), ale pokud se textu otevřete, určitě nebudete litovat.

No se ni como reseñar este libro, por supuesto puedo decir que me ha gustado, pero me parece muy poca cosa que decir siendo el libro que es.
Tiene una historia de asesinatos, pero no creo que lo pudiera encuadrar en un thriller o al menos no en uno convencional, lo que sucede es que los asesinatos que ocurren no son, ni de lejos, la parte central de la historia.
Para empezar, es un libro que se centra mucho sobre la historia del estilo arquitectónico de unas iglesias de Praga, basándose en siete iglesias de estilo gótico de la edad media y que en la actualidad se encuentran casi en ruinas.
Vamos conociendo de alguna manera la historia arquitectónica de estas iglesias a través de la vida de su protagonista, un policía mucho más allá de mediocre el cual antes de entrar a la policía abandona sus estudios de historia, en fin, es un personaje realmente patético que se ve envuelto en una serie de asesinatos que lo hacen regresar a la policía, pero todo a través de otro personaje por demás peculiar.
La cuestión aquí es que, entre lo gótico, lo extraño, lo extravagante de la historia vamos conociendo esta parte de historia arquitectónica de una de las ciudades, para mi gusto, más hermosas del mundo, sin embargo, no es un libro convencional en ningún sentido, su estilo narrativo es errático, el ritmo de la historia tiene altibajos, la narrativa es pausada, extraña, tanto como la historia misma.
Es un libro peculiar, pero interesante en su extraña manera, me ha costado mucho sacarme el chip de la cabeza de un thriller tradicional para cambiarlo a uno de estilo gótico con un final que no es para nada lo que se puede esperar, aquí no importa si adivinamos o no quien o quienes son los responsables de las muertes, aquí lo que importa es conocer a nuestro protagonista y perdernos en sus extrañas maneras y en lo que le está sucediendo de otra manera será imposible de leer.

Discharged from the Police after a botched job, K. is unexpectedly asked to rejoin the force and given a very specific assignment – that of accompanying and protecting Matthias Gmünd, an eccentric aristocrat who intends to restore the Gothic churches of Prague to their original glory. At first, K is in his element – after all, he is himself a failed historian obsessed with the Middle Ages and suspicious of the contemporary world. But his visits to Prague’s historic churches are increasingly accompanied by terrifying fits in which K has mysterious visions of the past. More worryingly, a serial killer is on the loose, seemingly targeting anybody who dares defy the sacred sites of the town.

Miloš Urban’s atmospheric 1999 Gothic novel The Seven Churches was a bestseller in Spain and the Czech Republic and has been translated into twelve languages. Hats off, then, to Peter Owen Publishers for securing the publication of Robert Russell’s English translation. Indeed, I am rather surprised that it has not enjoyed the runaway success obtained by other, less-deserving novels.

Urban has been compared to Umberto Eco but, frankly, that is the type of lazy analogy which nowadays tends to be applied to any literary thriller associated with the Middle Ages. The novel is reminiscent of Eco in its erudition and in its author’s evident love for literature and cultural history. However, the novel has supernatural undercurrents which are not particularly typical of the Italian author. The Seven Churches reminds me rather of Peter Ackroyd’s Hawksmoor. There is a resemblance in the subject-matter (a serial killer obsessed with historical churches) and a similar concern with psycho-geography – the quasi-mystical idea that buildings can carry “memories” of ages past. In the novel we roam through a Prague in which the Middle Ages unexpectedly reassert themselves, in which chasms open up in the road swallowing cars into medieval crypts; in which unicorns appear on dissecting tables and buxom beauties wear chastity belts; in which centuries-old secret societies live on, hidden from the hustle and bustle of the modern world.

At one point, K. is drawn into a literary discussion about Gothic novels – he tends to prefer supernatural Gothic to the rational strand of the genre in which all puzzling occurrences are tidily explained at the end. In Urban’s book, there seems to be a struggle between the two types of Gothic. Some mysteries are solved – other questions remain tantalisingly unanswered. In fact, the novel just gets weirder with each chapter. The ambiguous ending is somewhat unsatisfying from a narrative point of view. However, one cannot help feeling that it fits this haunting, uncanny novel like a glove.

Багато очікувала від цієї книжки, проте виявилось, це не той тип історій, які мені зараз заходять.
Багато розмов про празьку архітектуру й зміни, перед якими постає місто, історичних деталей, це плюс, але лінія дорослого героя мені була не близька. Те, як ним кидає від одного до іншого, з роботи в роботу, з істфаку до поліції, з поліції в приватні охоронці і назад.
Початок роману й лінія дорослішання героя мені були цікаві, але далі книга стала надто маскулінною і цей надто пристрасний погляд на жінок мене бентежив.

Варто розуміти, що текст не зовсім реалістичний, тут є певне містичне припущення чи вкраплення магічного реалізму, вже як подивитись. Подекуди скидалось, що ці події — просто марення, але чим далі ставало зрозуміло, що це не вигадка у світі книги.

Фінал взагалі щось 👀🤪

Книга може сподобатись тим, хто високо оцінив «Тінь води» Літи Остром, чи тексти про загадкові злочини довкола мистецтва, переплетені з культами чи іншого типу релігійними моментами.

Bylo to květnaté. Bodejť by ne, když se hlavní hrdina jmenuje Květoslav. Bylo to gotické. A jak pak by ne, když na každé druhé stránce se opěvují kvality gotické architektury. A bylo to o Praze, o Novém Městě pražském, založeném Karlem IV.

Sedmikostelí mi náladou místy připomínalo Váchalův Krvavý román. Ovšem narozdíl od Váchala zasadil Urban svůj gotický román na sklonek (druhého) tisíciletí. A navzdory modernosti (která je v příběhu pranýřována) to románu svědčí.

Romantický zoufalec Květoslav si v ničem nezadá s Máchovými rozervanci. Jeho jinošství (objevující se v retrospektivách) zasazené od období normalizace působí invenčně. A jeho střední léta (románová současnost) v předvečer milénia působí sugestivně, až osudově.

V knize jsou obšírně a čtivě popsány gotické kostely na Novém Městě. Být mi 18, proběhám s knihou celou čtvrť. Nebyl by to gotický román bez několika obskurních vražd. Tady je přání trochu otcem myšlenky - přece jenom, vraždy jsou tak spektakulární, že jejich aranžmá by těžko tak dlouho procházelo bez odhalení viníků. Ale budiž, přistoupil jsem na pravidla hry. Jak se na gotický román sluší, je zde cudná, "gotická" erotika, rozehraná jen v náznacích.

Čím si nejsem úplně jist, je závěr. Fantasmagorický epilog, kdy je ad absurdum dotažena jedna z hlavních myšlenek knihy - dobře už bylo a morální středověk ční nad rozkládajícím se novověkem. Čas stárne.

Tengo esta misma edición y debo decir que desde entonces no me fijo más en las portadas. El libro me desencantó por completo y jamás de los jamasés llegué a simpatizar con el personaje principal. Lo leí porque me atrajo la sinopsis (y la portada!) y terminarlo fue casi un suplicio.

Desde el punto de vista de la historia, puedo decir que no estaba mal la idea, después de todo, el encontrarse unos asesinatos en iglesias no es algo precisamente normal. También el hecho de que estos se produzcan en poco tiempo y se relacionen... ok, interesante. ¿El protagonista toca las piedras de uno de estos edificios y prácticamente se desplaza al pasado? ¿Cuán cool es eso?

¿El personaje principal cuenta la historia? No hay nada nuevo en eso.
Es un misántropo insoportable con baja autoestima al que me dieron ganas de patear en el trasero más de una vez de haber tenido una máquina que me colara en esas páginas!!!

De acuerdo, puede que fuera la intención del autor el que no gustara su personaje principal.... *silencio*.... Gran BS!!! ¿A qué autor le gusta que odien a su personaje principal????

Por otro lado, la historia tiene un buen escenario, PERO , se pierde por completo en los entresijos de la mente ¿retorcida? ¿loca? ¿enajenada? del protagonista. Ah no! Es misántropo! Eso lo arregla todo. WTF???
Perdí el hilo de la historia, perdí por completo la trama.... o no, se perdió sola porque era más importante saber lo que le pasaba al personaje, su drama y su historia.

Ok, eso también se me perdió.....

Los diálogos.... los pocos que hay me desconcertaron más de lo que deberían haberlo hecho. Se supone que a través de ellos se esclarece el pensamiento del resto de personajes, o como mínimo, se dan a entender sus intenciones. Eso no lo encontré en estos personajes. Cuando por fin pensaba que podría comprender qué los motivaba, no había una continuidad, no había nada de nada.

Lo único que me gustó fue la descripción de los edificios góticos, que al parecer eran la fascinación del protagonista, al mismo tiempo que repudiaba cualquier otro estilo arquitectónico, desde el barroco con sus excesivas decoraciones, hasta edificaciones modernas donde predomina el hormigón.

En resumen, no creo que me lea algo más de este escritor. Tampoco recomiendo el libro, a menos que quien lo lea tenga sentimientos afines con el protagonista, en cuyo caso, puede que termine disfrutándolo.

Creo que eso explica porqué no le doy ni una estrella.

Серія загадкових вбивств, пов'язаних із сакральними місцями, змушує головного героя зануритися в розслідування, яке веде до несподіваних відкриттів і змінює його самого — якщо треба, одним реченням можна описати роман так. Важливо: це не трилер і не детектив в класичнихрозуміннях, а справді — готичний роман.Повільний, не смакує деталями вбивств, але й не особливо занурюється у персонажів. Тут основне — дещо містична атмосфера, дивна мотивація і не менш дивна кінцівка😅. Що цікавого в романі я побачила:

1. Роман пронизаний готичними мотивами: темні костели, таємничі вбивства, стародавні обряди.

2. Архітектура Праги як окремий обожнюваний персонаж. Тут описані не лише Сім костелів, а й площі, фортеці, важливі деталі в інтер'єрі цих костелів та історичні дані. Гуглила багато, бо ж цікаво було зрозуміти про які вікна йде мова чи як виглядає якась там вулиця наприклад. А особливо цікаво, якщо були в Празі

3. Містичні провали в часі головного героя. Колишній поліцейський К. переживає видіння, коли торкається старих стін, які переносять його в середньовічну Прагу. Ці містичні досвіди змушують сумніватися в реальності та відкривають двері до глибших шарів історії міста.

4. Незвичайні персонажі, які не викликають симпатії. Від ексцентричного аристократа Матіаша Ґмюнда, який прагне відродити готичні костели Праги в усіх автентичних деталях до загадкової поліцейської Розети, яка... (без спойлерів)

Якщо любите щось незвичне і атмосферне, варто спробувати 🙌

رواية قصت أحداثها من خلال لسان الراوي "ك" الشخص الذي فضل عدم الإفصاح عن اسمه أو هويته عاشق لبلده التشيك و لكل المآثر التاريخية من الفن المعماري فيها و خصوصا مدينة براج، إلى أن تحدث جريمة في إحدى هذه المعالم التاريخية، و يتدخل صاحبنا "ك" مساعدا رجال الشرطة في فك غموض هذه الجريمة, ولكن للأسف تليها مجموعة من الجرائم الآخرى في كل أنحاء براج

هل سيتمكن رجال الشرطة من فك لغز هذه الجرائم المتسلسلة ؟

ما هو الدور الحقيقي الذي يلعبه السيد "ك" في كل هذا ؟؟

رواية بوليسية من الأدب التشيكي و التي كانت إحدى أبرز ما كتب به و ب إسبانيا أيضا لكن بها بعض التطويل في الأحداث لا داعي لها حرمتني من متعة اتباع سيل الأحداث البوليسية الغامضة.

كان هذا هو حال بطلنا "ك" الذي عاش محرجا من كل شيء حتى من اسمه فاختصره الى حرف واحد فقط
درس التاريخ ولم يكمل دراسته التحق بالشرطة وعجز عن أداء مهامه ففصل منها
ثم بدأت سلسلة من الجرائم في الحدوث هل يمكن أن يكون له صلة بها؟ ومن الشخص الذي يحركه؟
جو الرواية شبيه بروايات دان براون نوعا ما

نتنقل بين الحاضر والماضي لا نعرف الواقع من الخيال
لكن تشدك الأحداث لمعرفة القاتل
‏اكتشفت ان اغلب ابطال الرواية مجانين
لم أحب الرواية
كانت مملة و كرهه النهاية
ليست من الروايات التي أنصح بقراءتها

Повільносюжетний трилеродетектив про поліцейського-сіромаху, який намагається скласти кубик рубика зі свого життя і подій в які воно його заносить. Але нічого складати він не вміє. Як і автор. Ні, розібрати його на частини і скласти по кольорах - це не варіант. Навіть якщо всі грані однакового кольору. Кольору сірої, похмурої Праги з її величними костелами і готичною атмосферою. Так, вряди годи, нагнати таємничості виходить, але бездарна розв'язка не залишає жодної надії щоб я міг комусь рекомендувати це читати. Хіба що цей хтось закоханий в Прагу, в готику і так само як і головні персонажі, ненавидить сучасність.

Vraždy, neschopný bývalý policajt, gotické kostely, divnolidi. Detektivní horor? Ale kdeže. Barvitý román plný květnatých obrazů zachycujících prostředí Prahy, které většině nevšímavých procházejících zůstává ukryto. A taky polemika o jednotlivých historických obdobích a stavitelství. Škoda, že nejsem z Prahy, měla jsem chuť si všechny kostely obejít. Pro místní musí mít román úplně jiné kouzlo.

Pokojne dám 5/5, lebo toto je kniha, ktorá vás po 20 stranách chytí, alebo ju hodíte do koša. Je to číra maniera, ktorá u mňa trafila tú správnu strunku. Celý čas som čítal so zapnutým streetview, lebo ak tú lokalitu nepoznáte, inak sa nedá.

Zvláštní, tajemné, s hodně bizarním koncem a květnatým jazykem. Spousta architektonických zajímavostí. Zkrátka urbanovská klasika. Grafická úprava na mě byla zbytečně složitá až rušivá, písmena docela malá, ale formát "do kapsy" byl zase praktický do vlaku.

Nu încape nicio urmă de îndoială: „Cele șapte biserici” de Miloš Urban este cea mai plictisitoare carte pe care am citit-o anul ăsta. Știu că suntem de-abia la sfârșitul lui februarie, dar am încredere în ea că va ajunge cel puțin în top 3 până în decembrie. Însă vina e doar a mea: n-am sărit peste descrieri. Altfel, ar fi fost chiar bună. Îi scad o stea din cele 4 pe care i le-aș fi dat altfel pentru că mi-a tot tăiat avântul.

Povestea are loc prin Praga anilor ’90 și e spusă de cel mai incompetent om din lume, Kvetoslav. Când era mic, singura lui pasiune și singura materie la care era bun era istoria – a dat la facultatea aferentă, dar n-a reușit s-o termine. Apoi a vrut să dea la seminarul teologic, dar a renunțat și la ăla. Până la urmă, s-a făcut polițist. Însă e șomer când începe cartea, pentru că a fost dat afară din poliție – ar fi trebuit să păzească o doamnă ce primise amenințări cu moartea, dar s-a îmbătat la datorie și tipa a fost spânzurată când el dormea în casa ei. În restul cărții, mai apucă să fie angajat ca bodyguard de un tip, dar deși tipul respectiv stă pe loc, Kvetoslav uită complet că trebuia să-l păzească și se duce să se plimbe. Practic, mai incompetent de atât nu prea poți să fii.

Ei bine, pe tot parcursul cărții, Kvetoslav nimerește peste crime extrem de ciudate și violente. În primele pagini, aude clopotul unei biserici bătând într-un mod ciudat, cheamă poliția și, cu polițiștii după el, urcă în clopotniță și dă peste un inginer spânzurat de un picior prin care i se trecuse o funie și care e folosit pe post de limbă de clopot. După cum se dovedește, aceea e doar una dintre crimele unui un ucigaș în serie psihopat, căruia îi place să-și chinuie victimele în fel și chip, iar Kvetoslav își pune și el mintea la contribuție ca să încerce să ajute la rezolvarea misterului.

În plus, în oraș a apărut un tip dintr-o familie nobilă veche, care are un pitic pe creier: vrea să restaureze biserici gotice vechi din Praga conform planurilor lor inițiale – mai exact, vrea să dărâme orice turn baroc de pe o clădire gotică, de exemplu. Iar Kvetoslav are tot felul de viziuni dubioase – mai ales cu trecutul, dar nu numai, așa că e oarecum de acord cu constructorul diliu.

E genul de carte în care nu ești niciodată perfect sigur dacă lumea e realistă sau paranormală, în care se întâmplă tot felul de dubioșenii semi-plauzibile, care-ți fac mintea să stea în loc. De după fiecare colț mai apare un posibil inorog, o crimă oribilă, un mister de rezolvat.

Însă Miloš Urban se asigură că cititorii nu vor muri de atac de cord după două crime consecutive și le dă un timp de răgaz, în care Kvetoslav se plimbă prin Praga și descrie arhitectura și peisajul – e ca să te liniște��ti un pic, să pui semnul de carte și să nu o citești cap-coadă pe nerăsuflate cumva.

Mi se pare în un mister cum reușește cineva să povestească de slalom printre „troiene de ocru, ruginiu, siena și cafeniu”, de cripte subterane inundate în care pică mașini și de o tipă care poartă o centură de castitate, toate în aceeași suflare. Dar Urban reușește.

Traducerea de Anca Irina Ionescu mi se pare în regulă, în sensul în care textul e citibil și nu are mari ciudățenii.

Oh, honestly, this book appeared to be really something else. I admit that amount of stars I gave doesn't strictly go from the fact how much I despise when names - especially names of streets, names of main characters - are translated as well. Here, it made me feel like this book is less Czech than it should be.

The plot was boring. The crimes appearing weren't interesting at all, characters seemed to be only one-sided, as if one trait given by author was enough to describe everything. Kvetoslav, the main character, was blank horrible mimosa, who didn't know what he wanted and treated people around him as his enemies. The villains were totally out of place. Rozeta's role in whole plot is total mystery for me. Actually, the whole plot is a big mystery to me, beacause I feel like the author decided that he doesn't have a good idea how to finish the book, so he did it the easiest but the most stupid way.

0.5 of my stars comes from the descriptions of Prague - which were good, gave the feeling of how majestic the city is. But nothing else really can make me give that book something more. I understand why people may enjoy it at some degree, but if the book aspires to be a crime book, I really need something good. And the psychic thing didn't help at all - I guess it made me don't take this book seriously even more.

Gothic novel, murder mystery, lots of architecture and history and just a little Kafka or that undefinable thing he shares with any other Czech author you know and love thrown in -- though not enough to stop anything making fairly good sense -- this was most enjoyable. Apart from its love of the Gothic -- and references to Walpole and Radcliffe and others -- there's some cool stuff about cities in here.

...the phenomena that defined and constituted the material of Prague: her buildings...Without her old buildings -- fragile and vulnerable collectors' items of incomparable worth -- Prague would not be Prague, whereas the buildings erected in the last hundred years or so are no more than mass-produced consumer objects, indistinguishable from those you can see in any industrial town (60-61)

I began seeking out any surviving traces of the city's stone inhabitants, long since cannibalized for building material. Only the names remained... (65)

A fabulous romp through the city of Prague which is at once a murder mystery and a Gothic horror story with a surprising twist at the end. Urban is very much the Czech Republic's answer to Umberto Eco!

Tr Robert Russell. I’m not the best reviewer for this as I’m not a great reader of gothic novels but I still enjoyed it. Personally I thought the comparison to Umberto Eco was, superficially at least, a fair one (even though it has been a long time since I read The Name of the Rose) but there’s also an undercurrent of Dan Brown in there (except monumentally better written).

The crux of the plot is based around the architecture of medieval Prague - and as it is one of my favourite cities I loved this - although I did get confused/bogged down by some of the unfamiliar Czech history. The paranormal elements are fairly understated and almost seem to be a bit pointless until you get to the end - which I loved. In fact I would probably prefer to read a book based on the epilogue than the book itself!

In short, probably a perfect literary book if you are a fan of gothic novels and Prague and don’t mind a bit of silliness along the way. This has been sitting on my shelf for years (the bookshop I bought it from closed over ten years ago…) and although it’s not really my thing I’m glad that I finally got around to picking it up.

This unusual book initially appears to be a crime novel set in Prague circa 2000--the narrator is a failed policeman drawn back into police work through having been on the scene to rescue a man hung by the Achilles tendon from a church bell. However, while it continues to be about this and other crimes (mostly a series of bizarre murders), it cannot really be said to fit any genre very well. The ex-policeman is a shy, unhappy failed historian (he was more interested in how people lived than in political history and dates, so he dropped out of the university and nearly became a priest before going into the police); he also has periodic psychic experiences in which he sees life in the 14th century.

The book is atmospheric and spooky, somewhat apocalyptic, as the narrator and the knight who employs him show an increasing hatred for modern life and a desire to return Prague's New Town (originally built in the 14th century) to its original state. The extent to which the novel entirely succeeds is in my opinion uncertain. I feel I want to like it more than I actually do, but unquestionably it's a provocative tale with a boldly bizarre ending.

I should add that it's a particularly odd book to read when one has been skimming through various works by Jiří Karásek ze Lvovic, especially Gotická duše, which basically follows a protagonist obsessed with gothic churches in his wandering around Prague. Presumably Miloš Urban had Karásek at least partly in mind.

Rozhodl jsem se konečně dohnat letitý čtenářský rest, co mi už dlouho ležel v hlavě, a pořádně se začíst do Urbana. Sáhnul jsem kvůli dostupnosti po této jeho druhé nejranější knize a zažil jsem něco, co jako čtenář už dlouho ne. Kniha mě doslova vtáhla do sebe a nechtěla pustit. Autor se mi trefil do vkusu úplně se vším - od popisů architektury po pitoreskní a zvláštní postavy. Chvíli má člověk pocit, jako by četl Umberta Eca, pak Gustava Meyrinka, najednou cítí přízračné popisy Franze Kafky, aby se nakonec bavil u zvláštních, jaksi parodických, postaviček a lá Louis Borges. A přece je to všechno Miloš Urban. Někomu možná přišli popisné pasáže příliš dlouhé, či povaha hlavního hrdiny a jeho až fanatická fascinace gotikou nesnesitelné, já si ovšem knihu tuze užíval. Je to jedno z těch děl, o kterých nevíte, že vám v hlavě a v životě chyběly, dokud jste je nečetli.

Jsem zvědavý, jak si kniha povede ve srovnání s dalším Urbanovým dílem, nicméně teď nemůžu hodnotit jinak.

Cool! Weird! About a bloodless, socially uncomfortable loser and failed police officer who gets embroiled in a series of murders which have something to do with the Gothic churches of the Prague New Town. Excellently combining the usual bloody horrors to be found in this sort of horror novel with a grander, existential loathing of the modern age, a compelling repudiation of contemporary western civilization which will leave you empathizing with...well, I won't spoil it. But it's real solid, and the writing is quite strong, especially for this sort of thing. Definitely pick it up if you get the chance.

I think I need to read this book again. I went into it with certain expectations and it was not what I expected. It also took a long time to read, and so at times I had to re-read things to remember what was going on. I suspect, given more of my attention, I'd really love it. As it was, I adore anything set in Prague (my favorite city in the world), and the characters were fascinating, so I'm left with a sense of having somehow failed the book.

Este libro llegó a mis manos de casualidad ya que me lo regalaron y me lancé a leerlo por dos motivos, el primero que salvo a kafka y kundera no conozco nada más de la literatura de este país y me apetecía descubrir algo nuevo. Lo segundo es que se trataba de una nóvela negra con toques góticos ambientada en Praga que es uno de mis viajes pendientes más ansiados. La verdad es que fué una decepción y no me gustó nada.

Atmospheric gothic thriller set in Prague, a city that lends itself to the book. It was up and down for me, probably 3.5 stars. Enjoyed the brooding atmosphere, the architectural placements and the ending but something in the base storyline just failed to grab me and I am still not sure what it was. Likely to revisit this at some stage.
