In the cold, bitter wasteland known as the Deadlands, it’s hunt or be hunted. Somewhere on this frozen hellscape lurks a sinister demon, a creature hellbent on destroying the world as we know it. Natives call it the Wendigo—a spawn of Hell that embodies famine and pestilence. But its curse is not like that of a Lycan or Undead… A Wendigo’s curse preys on the minds of mortal men. With the help of hostile environments, the Wendigo can make a weak-minded man see paradise, Tempting them with comfortable lies much better than harsh reality… And while their prey is in a state of comatose, Wendigos claim their bodies as hosts. But Drakini of Fyrefell has never had an ordinary mind… Her schizophrenic mind allows her to see creatures that don’t actually exist. With the help of these creatures, only she can defy these Deadlands. Now, she stands as humanity’s final hope against this demonic horde. If she can’t learn how to shatter the Wendigos’ illusions, all of humanity will be lost.
She was recruited at the beginning of the war. Now we are a number of years later. She has been married and pregnant. She has been continuing to gain more skills.
I would highly recommend this novel and author to readers of fantasy world 🌐 adventure thriller relationship novels 💏✨ 2025 😏😯
I LOVED DRAKINI FROM PAGE ONE IN HUNTRESS. I KNEW HER CHARACTER WAS GOING TO CONTINUE TO GROW AND I WAS GOING TO CONTINUE ROOTING FOR HER. DRAKINI IN HUNTRESS WAS AMAZING. DRAKINI IN DEADLANDS IS 1000X BETTER.
THIS BOOK STARTS WITH DRAKINI AND THE HUNTERS TRAVELING TO THE DEADLANDS. THEY GET SHIPWRECKED AND END UP STRANDED ON THIS FROZEN LAND. THEY ARE CAPTURED AND STRUNG UP TO DIE. CUR SAVES THEM ALL. THEY HAVE TO FIGHT REALITY AND ILLUSIONS TO DEFEAT THE STEPPENWOLF. IT TAKES YEARS AND DRAKINI LOSES EVERYTHING, BUT ALSO GAINS SO MUCH.
I FOUND MYSELF WAKING UP EVERY MORNING AT 4AM JUST SO I COULD CONTINUE READING. SLEEP WAS JUST NOT IMPORTANT.
THE ENDING HAD ME YELLING OUT LOUD AND NOW COUNTING DOWN THE DAYS UNTIL THE NEXT BOOK IS RELEASED.
Drakini and Wisteria are back again on another mission for King Sylvian to hunt and kill the Wendigos!
This time she is older, wiser, stronger, and more powerful than she could ever imagine! Oh, and she’s got herself a man (or two!) 🫣
Devin Thorpe did a great job writing in some romance while still sticking to his dark fantasy roots with this series! I definitely fell for Cur and need more of him going forward!
BUT THIS ENDING…. Holy cow! I did not see that coming and it was the PERFECT ending to the Deadlands Duology, and it sets up Bloodbound (last book in the Bloodbound trilogy) perfectly!
Y’all have got to read this duology and the Bloodbound trilogy as well! It was sooo good and one of my favorite fantasy series of all time!
Reading Order of Devin Thorpe’s books: 1. Bloodlust 2. Huntress 3. Hellhound 4. Deadlands 5. Bloodbound
That's a book that enjoyed and also disliked...I can not tell that was bored at any paragraph. I loved her character she's real in the weird dark way the plot sets. But also is sometimes deceiving because she jumps from being all powerful to weak and resourceless. The plot is based on deceptions and ilusions, but the author takes it to some extremes where entire second characters are wiped out, left as hulks. Even the MC is distorted by those deceptions, since the reader is following her lead in first person this sometimes xocking and sometimes exciting or daunting. Time is also flowing at it's own deceiving will. So I definetely would recommend the book for those willing to suffer a good dark story. Definitely it's hard to rate.
In Deadlands, Drakini’s journey deepens as she battles monsters both literal and psychological. Her courage and resolve drive a gripping fight against darkness to save humanity. Thorpe continues to impress with his vivid worldbuilding and the eerie, evocative landscape of the Deadlands. A strong follow-up—highly recommend the book and the full duology.
Deadlands begins with the Hunters following young Prince Slvian’s command to sail to an uncharted island and kill the Wendigos, a new creature threatening their existence. Being the first ever female Hunter, Drakini isn’t welcomed among her fellow assassins and with no one to lean on or have her back she finds herself all alone. When they finally reach land they see that the Deadlands are an icy tundra, having only the clothes on their backs (and none of their weapons) they hastily begin their hunt. Hostility and discord among their group causes them to not think clearly and fall into a trap. Which leaves the question, will they be able to rely on one another?
The world building was so well constructed that it felt like I was really there. There were so many characters that I became invested in, they felt real and didn’t just fill space within the story. I absolutely loved this book and if I could give it more than 5 stars I would!! I mean, that bombshell at the end was alone worth 5 stars! I’m still trying to pick my jaw up off the floor!
**I’m really hoping we don’t have to wait too long for Bloodbound.
