For as short of a book as this one is, it is fully flushed out considering the vast history of Bass Reeves. He started out being a slave, then a runaway slave, finally ending up as the first black federal law enforcement officer. I liked it.
I had never heard of Bass Reeves before, but I found his story interesting. From going to former slave and achieving great success as a deputy marshal was a very inspiring story.
Liked reading this life stories of our, often over-looked African American heroes. Those who enjoy westerns and history, will enjoy this book and maybe learn about someone they never heard of. I did and enjoyed the journey. Well done!
I have read several of the books in this series and I always learn something new. I enjoy the fact you can read them in one sittings or just 2-3 quick chapters before bed.
It is beyond me hoe you can call these books "Hourly History" !! History should be facts , not opinions. Like many of these "history" books, this one is filled with the writer's opinions. It would be nice to read the TRUE history.
Bass Reeves is a true legend of the American West. This a very good summary of his career in law enforcement. Reeves was a man that needs to have his story told and this is a start.
His was the stuff legends were made. I enjoyed reading about his marshalling exploits. Led by pure dogged perseverance. I hope there is a larger biography of him and his times. Should be good reading.
Though the book admits that for various reasons not all the information may not be 100% accurate the writing carries the book to the finish line. Interesting, insightful and at times inspirational the life and times of Bass Reeves are laid out for a great read.
It seems that no matter the obstacle, Mr. Reeves continued on. He was and remains a total inspiration, especially to our African-American boys and men.
