Checkmate: A Gay Young Adult Romance
Baseball star Isaiah Banks has a crush, but it’s not on one of his fellow high school athletes. In fact, his crush isn’t on an athlete at all. Isaiah has fallen head over-heels for chess nerd Brownyn Gates.
Bronwyn is small, clumsy, and awkward, but don’t tell Isaiah that. In his eyes, Bronwyn is the smartest kid he’s ever met. His glasses and ginger hair make him the most beautiful person he’s ever seen. But he worries he will never get the time of day from someone of Bronwyn’s genius and beauty. In fact, he swears the universe is trying to keep him from expressing his love.
One problem or another thwarts each attempt at approaching Bronwyn for a date until finally meets the boy of his dreams . . . and meets the disappointment of his nightmares. A fun read
I zipped through Checkmate and had a great time reading. Isaiah is such an engaging character. I rooted for him to succeed from the first page. His (unfortunately for him) roadblocks, missteps, and obstacles asking the guy of his dreams on a date are funny and oh-so-sympathetic. His determination, aided by his friend's humor and advice, make the outcome even more satisfying. Highly recommended for a completely enjoyable short read.
