One day, as I was riding in the car with my friend, Amanda, I looked down at her middle console, and a book titled Sufficient Grace: A Christian Perspective on Chronic Illness (Drew Kizer) was lying there.
She told me it was about a brother-in-Christ that she knows who deals with Parkinson’s disease.
I immediately purchased the book on Amazon. I felt compelled to read it because my Uncle J. was recently diagnosed with Parkinson’s, and I felt it would help me understand him more and how best to love him through it.

As you read this book, Kizer pours into each chapter with incredible insight into God’s Word, along with his honesty and vulnerability.

I underlined and wrote notes in the margins, as I typically do with every book. But this time, I am going to gift it to my Uncle. He will be able to read it on his own time, and with my notes, it will be like we are having a personal book club together.
With each part that is underlined, or margin scribbled, I hope that he sees the outpouring love I have towards him.

To the author, who is my brother-in-Christ, though I have not met you, thank you for this gift in being able to communicate in a way that I might not have known how to before.

To my Uncle J.: You are the same Uncle I’ve always loved, with or without this disease. We, as humans, are forever changing, in ways we like and in ways we choose not. I am not the young, crazy niece I once was. Now, I have my own classroom, and wrinkles on my face that I pretend don’t exist. I am thankful that what has not changed is the family bond we share. May this always remain.

What will become clear to the reader right away is that Kizer has a beautiful command of the English language. Slowly, what will become even more apparent, is that the reader has always needed to read this book. I highly recommend this book to two groups of people:
1. Christians who want to understand the struggles of others, particularly the struggle with chronic illness. Beyond providing just that, Sufficient Grace will also give a healthy, biblical perspective of everyday struggles and temptation. (This book would make a wonderful guide for a small group or Bible class.)
2. Those who DO struggle with chronic illness, particularly those who struggle while asking the big faith questions along the way.
