I wasn’t familiar with Messi before reading this exciting picture book biography, but whether you’re a soccer fan or not, his passion and dedication are inspiring. Perry’s storytelling is lyrical and engaging as she convincingly demonstrates what a fabulous role model Messi is. Lozano’s bright and colorful illustrations are full of soccer details that fans will be eager to spot. A must read for soccer and sports fans and highly recommended for anybody looking for inspiration about overcoming obstacles.

This book is worth the read, even if you and your family aren't soccer fans. Messi's story is one of passion and perseverance despite substantial obstacles and the author has done a great job of making him a relatable role model even though he's one of the most famous people on the planet. I'm not a soccer fan, but I'm a fan of Messi after reading this book!

A great little picture book biography! I find that I didn’t actually know all that much about Messi so it was interesting to learn more about him. My son is big into soccer and I know he’ll love this one!

Vibrant graphics and poetic writing makes this children's book a hit. The story tells of Messi's soccer career but includes the personal side as well. Anyone wanting to learn more about his origin story would do well to start here. Also included is a timeline and interesting back matter.

Growing up in a “loving, noisy, and soccer-obsessed” family in Rosario, Argentina, little Leo Messi started playing soccer as soon as he could stand.   His grandma Celia took him to a local club practice when he was four, and insisted he be allowed to play; despite his small stature, he quickly rose in local ranks.  He had setbacks - his loving grandmother died when he was 11, and shortly thereafter he was diagnosed with a growth hormone disorder - but by the age of 13 he had been recruited by FC Barcelona.  Far away from his family, Leo struggled to make friends and was frustrated about his medical situation, but his sadness melted away when he was on the field.  His dedication to the sport he loves paid off, leading to a successful career and superstar status. 

Young readers and Messi fans will love every aspect of this picture book biography.  They will be inspired by his story of persistence and determination, and appreciate learning the basic facts of his childhood and early career.  The writing is concise, providing a clear picture of  Messi’s troubles and his triumphs.  The audience will love tidbits such as Leo’s childhood nickname from his brothers (“La Pulguita”, the little flea, and the way one of his early coaches bribed him with cookies.  The colorful, full-bleed illustrations are full of action and fun; soccer-savvy readers will love looking for recognizable details in the backgrounds (jerseys, stadiums, etc.) and appreciate that little Leo is always seen wearing a pink shirt, reflecting the superstar’s signature color.  Back matter includes a comprehensive timeline and information about Messi’s many accomplishments and accolades. This picture book biography has enough information in it that even my 6th and 7th grader soccer super fans would enjoy this overview of Messi's life. There's definitely a poetic element to some of the pages, with words bouncing around on the page like soccer balls, so it will hold elementary interests as well. There's a complete timeline and more Messi Facts at the end of the book, and one photograph on the back cover. I can see this being a popular choice at school book fairs.

What a beautifully written, inspiring picture book about soccer great Lionel Messi. It will certainly be a favorite among young soccer fans, but the book's reach goes far beyond the sports world. It's a story of hardship, familial love (I got choked up reading about proud Grandma Celia), passion, and perseverance. Back matter provides additional intriguing details. Thoroughly researched, thoughtfully told, and brightly illustrated, this book is a must-have for every home, school, and library!

This is a fascinating and beautifully-written biography of arguably the most famous sports star in modern times. I didn't know much about Messi's back story but he is a truly inspirational figure, having overcome so much on his ascent to the top. This will be a huge hit with kids of all ages, and a good way to entice reluctant readers who will be attracted by the vibrant art and thrilling text. Highly recommended.

Everyone knows Messi, the biggest soccer star in the world, but I didn't know all of the hurdles Messi had to pass in order to get where he is today. He may have been born with extreme talent, but Messi's Magic shows how it is perseverance and maybe a few cookies that allowed that talent to grow into the professional we see today. Kids will love picking up this book to learn more about their soccer hero and will learn about persistence and overcoming obstacles in the process.

If soccer is the most beautiful game, Messi's Magic is the most beautiful celebration of the greatest player of all time. Readers will be inspired by Messi's perseverance and grit as he overcomes debilitating health issues and homesickness at a young age to grow up and become a global phenomenon. Unlike most expository sports books, this is a lyrical and engaging story. A timely purchase right before the World Cup returns. Highly recommend!!
