As a church consultant and renewal leader for over twenty years, the first question I ask every struggling pastor is, "What is the biggest problem in your church?"
Invariably the response will be something like this. "The lay people just do not want to get involved." or "They just want to be entertained on Sunday mornings."
Yet when I ask the laypeople what they think the is church's main problem, they often respond, "The pastor will not let the laity do anything."
I find that both of these perceptions are often true. How can this be? It is a matter of motivation.
This book covers one element of motivation which leaders of volunteers must realize. All people are not created equal. God created each of us with certain unique gifts and graces. When working in one's appropriate gift mix, burn out is minimized and tasks become joyful. The opposite is true when trying to minister in someone else's gift. It is like Saul's armor, burdensome and restricting.
This book can be used to identify each person's motivational gifts so they will joyfully accept their role in the body of Christ.
On the other hand, the leader must learn the appropriate ways to motivate the people he is leading.
Our ministry leadership books include several chapters on motivation.
