"I've always been a monster, Ivy. The disease just gave me permission to show you."
In a perfect female-led society where men know their place, Ivy never saw the darkness lurking in her best friend's eyes. But when a mysterious illness transforms him into something powerful and dangerous, she'll discover that her own heart might be darker than she ever imagined. A dark sci-fi romance that will make you question everything you thought you knew about power, love, and monsters.
HEA guaranteed.
This book can be read as a standalone. An enemies-to-lovers romance set on a dystopian planet, The First Alpha King is a dark, steamy, sci-fi romance that explores sociological and psychological themes. It redefines and delves into what it truly means to be an alpha and an omega. It contains he falls first, evil male lead, villain male lead, Beauty and the Beast, friends to lovers, friends to enemies, enemies to lovers, and touch her and die, and morally grey female lead.
I thought the concept was really interesting. I think it has a lot of potential to be great. The writing can use some work. I think some editing is needed as I saw many typos and contradictions and few plot holes. I also felt like the conflict was not dramatic enough. The FMC was very wishy washy and I hated the way she treated the MC. The resolution at the end of the story just felt so inorganic. Spice was fine - I typically like it to be more drawn out and each scene felt very rushed like it was just thrown in there to appease readers.
I read this book because so many reviews said it was good. I finished it because I was hoping it would get better - it got worse. First book ever that I regret finishing. I have DNF books before but I kept hoping and then started skipping multiple pages to finish and never missed anything of importance in the book.
1. I thought the plot original. Granted, I haven’t read a lot of Omegaverse outside of Addison Cain (who combines a lot of violence with great world building). I loved the idea of people who travel to colonize a planet with the intent to make a perfect society. It’s a reverse “Handmaid’s Tale” where the men are second class citizens, subservient and docile. The reason being that back on Earth they are violent, are a threat to a woman’s personal safety where she can’t walk down a street without fear of being mugged or worse. All the reasons regarding the fear that women feel for their personal safety on Earth are completely valid. But in trying to avoid this in the new colony, we do see a reversal about men seen as equals. In some places there is genuine affection but it’s under the weight of condescension. In some case it’s outright dismissal and emotional abuse such as the one woman who keeps her young son on a leash. By his actions we see that he has disassociated with his complete withdrawal from human interaction and eye contact. 2. The idea that we have “normal” humans so young in its colonization on a new planet that only 1 generation has been born on it that has grown to adulthood so far. It made me wonder at what point is there an “omegaverse” in this story especially as the men are so subjugated. 3. But then we have mutation or is it a disease? Who knows for sure but from it we develop an infected colony that display traits such as Alphas, Omegas and Betas. It’s a violent world where the Alphas rule and serve based on a show of strength. Where their sanity rests on the consumption of meat and somewhat on Omegas. Here is where the story I think was really strong. Oleander, the MMC, is an Alpha. He’s the Alpha of Alphas. His childhood friend and true love is Ivy, a Beta. We see that Betas are not desired by Alphas or Omegas. They are also arguably the most sane but highly susceptible to commands from basically everyone else. It can be argued they are the least safe. We follow Oleander and Ivy as Oleander fights to retain his sanity so as not to hurt Ivy. We see Ivy fighting Oleander because of her personal beliefs. I saw that people didn’t care for Ivy very much but I really did like her. If you’re looking for smut, there is some but it takes its time because that’s not the main focus of the story. It’s strictly about Oleander and Ivy coming to terms with different beliefs, different morals, a different way of thinking and living. I think I just could understand Ivy. She believed that every living creature that draws breath should not be killed. This was the belief taught by the colony but one that Ivy truly embraces. To kill rabbits, pigs or any animal for food is abhorrent to her. Hurting another person is abhorrent to her. To damage an ecosystem is also abhorrent. And I TOTALLY get that. It’d be like if someone gave me an axe and said “go kill that cow.” I couldn’t do it and probably would rather starve if I couldn’t find a vegetarian option. Because it’s a little easier to eat the meat that you didn’t see alive one moment and then slaughtered before your eyes the next. So I got it and found Ivy didn’t bother me but rather that I did sympathize with her predicament. Like the 18 year old soldiers sent to Vietnam. Just kids given a gun and told to kill another human being before they kill you. It’s much easier said than done if you’re the one holding the gun. 4. The prose. I thought the author’s descriptions were fantastic. A little flowery but for me not in an annoying way. In fact, I was a little jealous that she could write such metaphors and similes. For instance, when Oleander overrides her own thoughts and desires with his own (Alphas can override a person’s thought and actions and even turn their brain into a sort of mindless follower) how it affects her is beautifully described:
I sense Oleander standing over me, but I won’t look. “I can make you do anything,” he murmurs. He’s talking to himself. “But I don’t want to. I want you to be Ivy. I want Ivy. I don’t want a robot or a doll.”
I’m a trembling leaf. I’m a plant yanked from the ground and tossed aside; my roots ripped from the dirt. I lay, waiting for my heart to slow down, for my head to stop pounding, for life to make sense again. I might wait forever. “You hurt me,” I whisper, even though I don’t know if Oleander is still in the room to hear me. “You hurt me so much. I hate you.”
Sometimes, there’s even humor amidst the dark like when Ivy continues to try to convince Oleander to stop with the violence, to regain some of his sanity:
I’m trying to think, but it is impossible with Ivy right here, smelling like sex and sounding like a three-person podcast.
If this kind of writing isn’t for you and you’d rather read something that just goes right to the smex, then this isn’t for you. If you want to read something that has interesting world building and, for me, an interesting version of an Omegaverse being “born” rather already existing than I’d recommend giving it a try. The inner dialogue is fascinating and touching, especially from Ivy who recognizes that she is cruel to Oleander and yet for her, he is her everything though he doesn’t know it.
Bonus? I absolutely LOVE that cover. It so perfectly describes Oleander and the tone of this book.
OK. I have mixed feelings about this book. If I have to get to the bottom line, I feel that it left me feeling a bit awkward and wanting in the end. First of all, I liked the writing style – the author is definitely a good one at that – and the story flows quite well. I liked the original idea of the origins of the Omegaverse – a colony in a new planet, matriarchy that was a bit too much, regarding males as second-class citizens and a disease/virus (not exactly clear) that comes and changes everything. Brute male Alphas, sane but susceptible to mind control Betas and Omegas that are a bit too crazy and territorial to the point of murder. Amidst all this, Ivy and Oleander (a name I don’t find fitting for him somehow). A Beta and the Alpha of the Alphas – after the disease strikes. Love and power-struggles, complete chaos, the end of the society as they knew it and the rise of many, many moral questions that we don’t get an answer to but definitely leaves us ponder. That being said, there was a bit of exaggeration in the behavior of both our MCs that didn’t sit well with me. Also, the ending left me wanting more for some reason, although technically Ivy and Oleander’s story is complete. So, even if I am on the fence regarding this book, I will take a leap with the next one in the series because this dystopian, omegaverse world has potential. 3.5 stars
I've been waiting (definitely NOT patiently) for this book to finally arrive.
I didn't know where The First Alpha King would take me but having read the first book in this series and having been blown away by that story, I knew, wherever this journey would take me I could only be epic. My gut feeling was not wrong.
Ivy and Oleander are two characters unlike any other character I've read about so far. This entire BOOK is unlike any other book I've read so far. Are they good? Are they bad? Are they simply mad? You just can't tell. Which pretty much sums up TFAK pretty good. You're never on stable ground with this story, can never be sure about anything.
It's hard to explain. I guess you will just have to read it to understand and see the genius behind the construction of this world with all it's complex beauty.
And afterwards, if you haven't yet, definitely go read The Last Alpha King. Still my favorite read of 2024.
PS: This story is for people that don't need their books to be picture perfect, simple and like most other books out there. TFAK is a book that is definitely outside the box. If you can't be open to that, you should not read.
“I know he loves me, but his love is a scary, wild thing.”
“The First Alpha King,” by Belle Knock
I loved book 1 of this series and this book took a spin I did not see coming. After reading book 1 I expected this book to fall along the same lines, but it surprised me. It starts out with a female ruled society where men are used for what they can provide for like breeding and hunting. The men going crazy like book 1 was more build up then I expected and not remotely the same as the first book, which was a pleasant surprise. The inner misogyny thoughts were horrible but on the same hand men were treated little better than slaves so neither side was truly good. During the entire book I felt like it was psychologically messed up and there were no good answers on what to do or how to fix it. I ended up loving the moral dilemma of the book and made me think of things and see things that remind me of our current world but on a normal everyday non-supernatural scale. 5 out of 5 stars.
-Omegaverse -Villain Gets the Girl -Morally Grey -Different Planet
A complex romance filled with greed, unrequited love and new found power
This is my first read by Belle and I am blown away with everything about it.
What happens when a community ruled by women, where the men are basically servants, gets an awakening in the form of illness that makes alphas, omegas and betas emerge? A little bit of madness, a little bit of bloodshed, the formerly weak becoming top dogs and the ones that had all the power losing it - a whole new chain of command.
I cannot put into words how much I loved this. The complexity of Oleander and Ivy - both “villains” but you get to decide who truly is the worse of the two. Mix that with wonderful world building and a plot that will grasp you by throat and sink its teeth in deep…that’s what this story is. I enjoyed the depth, the spice, the suspense and the way this talented queen made me dislike myself for loving characters I feel i shouldn’t have. Definitely one of my favorite reads of the month and I will diving into the others of this series.
This is my first read by the author, and I wasn't sure what to expect, though the blurb definitely grabbed my attention.
What a world. What a story. At first, I was unsure. But something was eating at me to keep going; I was entranced, after all. I just couldn't name why. And it continued through to the very end.
Ivy and Oleander were different from any other characters I've read before. They each got under my skin at times, but I do feel this was intentional on the author's behalf. The story was different from any other story I've read before. I have to say, this one hooked me and I'm going to continue the series!
It is very hard to explain without giving too much away. If you enjoy dark, twisted romance with a dystopian element and an alpha/beta/omega storyline, I urge you to give it a try.

This is a book that surprised me because it was a different kind of story than I expected, in a good way.
The plot was interesting, to say the very least, and the characters were done perfectly. While I truly hated Ivy for a lot of the book due to her treatment of Oleander and her terrible judgments of him, I eventually grew to like her even with her high and mighty beliefs in herself.
Oleander was a monster, yes. He made terribly selfish decisions driven by his love and need for Ivy without thinking things through. But the absolute love and devotion he had for her made my heart sing.
This book was much different than what I normally read due to the strong feminist beliefs at the detriment to men plot, but it was well worth the read, and I highly suggest this book to romance lovers of all kinds.
⭐️⭐️ 2 Stars Overall 🌶🌶 2 Spicy Peppers (there is open door spice but not very descriptive)
DNF at 50%
Simply put, the story starts with a community of humans on another planet, the women run everything and treat men like work horses. About 25% into the story the men start to come down with an illness that starts to change them physically and mentally, resembling something like a werewolf. Where it fell flat for me, is the male POV made him seem more like a Neanderthal and it didn't work for me, lol.
I can see where the author was going with this idea and I love how different it is from other books I've read but the delivery fell flat for me personally. Definitely worth trying to see if it's more to your liking because it was definitely unique.
What i thought started off as a great idea for a story line turned into a hodge podge of plot lines that went nowhere. This book was all over the place. No sub-plot seemed to complete it's path. Characters were choppy and not well defined. Wishy washy most of the time. I kept reading hoping that the writer would find her stride and pull the book together and make a really good story but it just never happened. I found that I was jumping entire paragraphs just to finish to book. Even the steamy parts were like a 13 year old girl was trying to write an adult novel. Just short choppy descriptions of characters, places, actions, all of it. I won't be continuing this series. One bad book was enough.
I’m not a huge fantasy reader but when I read the blurb I wanted to give it a go. The story really picks up in part two. What a man wouldn’t do for love even if that man is an alpha. Dedicated to showing the woman he loves how deeply it runs. Learning how to evolve and grow. Learning how to fight for what you believe in and not lose yourself in the process. There were times the MFC drove me a bit crazy but you can also see how it ties into her up bringing. If you want a strong alpha type who doesn’t care about what anyone thinks but the one he loves. This definitely delivers. I received a copy of this book in advance and share my opinions willingly
This is the first book in AWHILE where the ending has actually left me angry.
I liked that it was a different take on omegaverse and it was well written, but the actual story itself just made me angry. In this society men are inferior to women. As a feminist you might think I would love that, but I want equality, not to put others down so that I can rise up. The FMC felt really wishy-washy and she started one place but ended the complete opposite.
Please read this book if you like: *Alpha/Beta/Omega designations *Spice *Dystopian Society
Favorite Character: I don't think I had one in this one.
Favorite Quote: "She burns with the beauty of the sun, and I've always loved fire"
Honestly I have mixed feelings about this book. It was very well written. I absolutely adored Oleander but I absolutely despised ivy. She used him as a punching bag a doormat and was only kind to him when it benefited her. Whereas he did everything in his power to make her happy and to love her. I feel like he would have been better off leaving her and getting somebody that would have truly loved him for who he was.

I enjoyed this book about how humans had travelled to another planet and colonised it, this story starts after they settled and the second generation. had grown up. I love the twist about men being second-class citizens, until a virus rips through their colony. This book has twist after twist and leaves us with the moral question, of should you go back to the way it was before or stay with the new order, where there is a U-turn in leadership. This is a very interesting and steamy read with great characters with Ivy and Oleander. I was hooked from the start. 5 stars!
★“His love is a monster that wants to consume me”★
This Omegaverse story was very uniquely told, with a slow building of events of within a strictly controlled dichotomy of a society which was flipped on its head when the disease reared its ugly head. I really enjoyed Oleander’a character and was slow to warm up to Ivy’s but soon realized that her goals were what had blinded her to what she could have with him, together. Looking forward to catching up with The Last Alpha King, which I had apparently missed!
I hate that I read this book. I hate even more that I don’t just skip to the end but instead READ EVERY STUPID PAGE.
I loved the idea of a dystopian society that was a mirror of our own(ish), the reversal of patriarchal society, the alien planet, the virus, the shift and destruction of society only to be rebuilt and shaped in an entirely different way. Only it wasn’t - they went from a matriarchal society with men being oppressed to a class based society where all “lower” class were subjugated…much like the planet they fled from…neat.
Beautiful charming story. Really dystopian, I appreciated the world building. The writing style was really readable and I read it so fast it was over too soon. I read the first book in the Omegaverse series too and the lore keeps getting better. I can’t wait to see what comes next from this author. Spicy - yes. Dark - double yes. Be warned, this book is not light, fluffy reading.
This dystopian world is full of a twisted darkness that is eating the minds of men, turning them into something feral and all together unknown.
She thought he was the cause of it all, so it was vengeance that she would take from him. Yet maybe, he is all that is standing between her and destruction.
Try to resist the chemistry. Try to resist the drama and angst.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I don't know where to begin. I love the social undertones in this book. Ivy and Oleander. I initially disliked Ivy, but I learned to love her because Oleander loves her. Oleander is a "bad boy" love-sick puppy who is obsessed with Ivy, who is career-driven and a rule follower. In their society, men are valued less than women until the "sickness" begins. There are Alphas, Betas, and Omegas, and the power struggle begins.
Someone help this author- we readers are here in the omegaverse for some love, and sexy time. Not a moral discussion on men vs. women or a male beat down… but he is also an alpha. So disappointing and the same chapter over and over… I would give 0 stars if I could… I started skipping chapters even- hoping for redemption… still sucked.
The concept was great for this story and the beginning had me very interested but unfortunately about half way lost me a bit. I'm not sure why, it kind of just fell flat for me. I think the story flowed well, maybe the characters weren't to my personal taste. I had to give 3 stars for me personally but it may be a higher rating for someone who connects better with the characters.
I typically don't read dystopian smut, but I'm so glad I picked this up! I really love a psycho golden retriever and that's exactly what Oleander is. The character growth from Ivy and Oleander was perfection. Four out of five only because it's indecisiveness was a touch over the top. This is definitely 5/5 on spice🥵🥵. Absolutely recommend!
The story follows a storyline that is new and different interesting, but it wasn’t my cup of tea. The FMC was annoying and I found myself wanting to stop reading so many times. The story is creative and new, but it just didn’t connect with me.
I’ve read many dark romantic omegaverse and this one was surprisingly good, it wasn’t as dark as what I’m used too but it was cutely dark, I’ll definitely read the other 2 books
2.5 it was an interesting plot but it was strange. How big exactly did he grow? Anaconda dick?? Seems like hes way to big for them to even have sex. He said she weighed about as much as a teacup so makes he think they are VERY different sizes. DNF
