I am going to be honest---I wasn’t really feeling Zu in the earlier books, but this one? This one changed everything. Getting to see his backstory, understanding what really shaped him, and watching him navigate all these struggles? Yeah, I get him now, and honestly, he turned into one of my favorite characters.
With the tension already high between him and Chevy, this latest turn of events shakes Zu to his core. The realization that he could lose his best friend before they even have a chance to make things right? That hits different. And as if that wasn’t enough, he’s out here watching one of his own with the woman he thought was his forever—talk about a gut punch.
But Zu doesn’t even have time to dwell on that because his little brother, Dionysus, is out here wildin’ in the streets, making reckless decisions that Zu has to keep cleaning up—without the crew knowing. And then here comes Sasha, aka Freckles, stirring up feelings in him that he doesn’t even want to acknowledge. Zu has been burned before, and putting his heart on the line again? Yeah, he’s resisting with everything in him.
And then—when his brother goes missing? That’s the breaking point. The weight of his past, his loyalty to the crew, and his desperate need to protect what little family he has left? It’s crushing him. I felt every single moment of his struggle. There were points where I really thought it would all be too much for him, that he’d break under all the pressure. He buckled, no doubt—but he never folded.
And just when you think things might settle? Chevy hits them with the hardest slap in the face yet. But of course, there’s no time to even process that because BOOM—another cliffhanger! And this one? This one has me panting at the thought of someone else being hurt.
Chevy’s Promise is up next, and with so many unanswered questions, I already know that one is going to have me on an even bigger rollercoaster.
One thing’s for sure—we only f** wit the ZOO!!*
