Lady Matilda has always been an introvert, preferring her books to awkward conversations with strangers. As her first Season arrives, her mother insists she put away her bluestocking and concentrate on finding a husband. But Mattie is terrified of finding herself betrothed or even worse— not betrothed. The arrogant men of the ton terrify her.
Mr. Harry Walters is an orphaned, ex-Bow Street runner turned investigator, who makes a living by his wits. Working for Paddy O’Brien and his Peelers, often taking assignments for the Home Office, Walters is used to working closely with the beau monde. When a peer approaches him about a new assignment, Harry realizes they are both after the same man. He accepts the job but soon finds himself also protecting the earl’s sister.
While working in costume at a masquerade, Walters makes a fatal mistake when he asks Lady Matilda to dance. It takes only a few stolen glances and one waltz for two unlikely souls to become hopelessly entwined. Mattie is determined to win the heart of this handsome, rugged man. Harry is just as determined to keep her safe.
Will fate find a way to bring a common man and an earl’s sister a happy ever after? Or will his lack of title and dangerous life keep her at arm’s length?
Set in the hectic district of Cheapside during the Regency, Paddy’s Peelers search the dregs of London with skill and cunning to uncover political plots, bring criminals to justice, and perhaps unexpectedly find love along the way. A sweet but action-packed romance.

This is my second time reading a book from this author and I was thoroughly captivated from the beginning of the story to the end.
Mattie and Walters are from two different worlds.. she's the sister of a Duke and he is an orphan turned spy for the crown..
However they stumble upon each other when a pair of swans attack Walters and Mattie comes to his rescue.. with the help of these swans and spending time together to help Mattie gain a little bit of confidence.. Mattie and Walters develop feelings for each other and even when they go separate ways they can't stop thinking about each other.. they can't stop feeling like something is missing in their lives..
The mystery part of this story was so good especially when Mattie's brother and Walters' siblings helped take down the villain.
This story was incredible with the happiness between the two main characters but we also witnessed a happily ever after between side characters!
I can't wait to see more in this series.
I received this book from the author as an advanced reader's copy in exchange for an honest voluntary review and this is purely based upon my own personal opinion and that of no else.
Well written, able to hold the attention and keep you turning the pages till your done. Full of drama, mystery, society rules, different classes, crime, villains, heroes, Family, friends, love, sadness and many twists. Lady Mitilda is the sister of Nicholas. She has a fear of speaking to most people. It causes her to stutter. She's at the park when a child is getting close to the pond and the swans. A man from nowhere saves the child at the cost of falling into the pond and getting bit. Harry Walters is on a case when he is bit causing Mattie to help him. She asks him to return her handkerchief and meet up. As they continue to get together feelings bloom for them both. Harry and Nicholas are working together to find more evidence against the Duke of Colvin. Has lots of action and emotions to finding what the Duke is up too. But who is the Vicar, can't wait for the next book to find out. Would recommend to everyone.

Mr. Harry Walters is an orphan who was rescued by Paddy O’Brien and his wife and now works for Paddy O’Brien and his Peelers and is comfortable moving among the different social classes. Lady Matilda (“Mattie”) is a very shy young lady and not ready to be pushed into her First Season to find a husband. Disguised at a masquerade, Harry asks Lady Matilda for a dance, and the two of them immediately are drawn to each other. With both coming from different social classes, is there any possibility for a commoner and an Earl’s sister to fall in love and marry?
This first book in the Paddy Peelers Mystery series is an exciting and well written historical mystery romance. It had so much drama, action, intrigue, suspense, and so many emotional issues and plot twists that were very engaging. I enjoyed the cladding difference romance, the strong family connection, and how beautifully everything turned out. The ending was wonderful and surprising. I highly recommend reading!
Nice read about the eldest f seven adopted siblings of an Irish couple who investigate and fight for justice. Harry meets Mattie during an incident in the park and from there their relationship progresses until they have their happy ever after. The crime is still not completely ended and will be addressed in later series of the family
Allow a day for this sweet, suspenseful Regency forbidden-love second-chance spy romance in London between 19-year-old Miss Matilda Bancroft, sister to Nicholas Bancroft, Earl of Darby, and 29-year-old detective Mr Harry Walters.

I received an ARC from both Booksprout and Hidden Gems. I'm willingly leaving a review. TRIGGERS: No details because it's clean, but we know a certain duke visited gambling dens, doxies, and had a taste for young boys too. A bit of gory details, such as bloody faces, and people being beaten up, including children. It's part mystery, clean romance - three couples, friendship, and tight families. If you don't know what Puce Vandyke points of lace is, I recommend you search for pictures; it's beautiful. In chapter 14, I thought for sure it was trap since everything was so easy. I didn't understand the logic of going to a masquerade to keep anonymity and then being able to recognize the minions that weren't supposed to be there in the first place; they would also be wearing a costume... It was really funny when Darby gave Walters a heads-up about his future mother-in-law. As a bonus, we get the story of all the O'Brien's children. I really liked how Mattie met Harry, how they saw each other afterwards, how their friendship grew, and then love; the pace was believable. There's a whole paragraph that repeated a whole scene that we saw in person in the previous chapter. I'm wondering why it's there.
I was first drawn to this series and introduced to this author through the anthology Rakes and Reticules. I loved the idea of a childless couple taking in children who were struggling to survive, raising them as their own, educating them, and then setting up a detective agency with each of them having important roles in it as adults. It fascinated me and I have yet to be disappointed in the series (this is the second book I've read in the series, since I read them out of order).
Harry Walters is on the case of a treasonous duke and working for a guy who has his own reasons for wanting to bring the duke to justice. Harry is a master of disguises and keeps a watchful eye on the Darby house (the guy who hired him). He's intelligent, dashing, thinks outside the box...he's got it going on.
Darby's sister notices an old man watching from across the street, has seen him a few times, but thinks he's just waiting for somebody and goes about her business. While she, her maid, and her driver are in a park, a child gets away from his mother and runs for the pond where some mute swans are swimming with their cygnets. Mattie sees the child and sees a man running to save the boy and a swan attacks the man. She takes her parasol to the swan and doctors the man's hand.
Harry is injured, but he's quite taken with the lovely Matilda and engages in a conversation with her that leads to other things. *No spoilers*
Mattie has to have a season and is dreading it. She's awkward with men. She has no idea how to talk to them. They make her nervous to the point where she stutters. It doesn't help matters any that her mother is riding her about everything and wants her to marry well. She needs Harry to help her with other things.
This is a mixed-class trope with characters that I absolutely adored, mystery, action, and some sweet moments between Harry and Mattie that catapulted to a fantastic ending. The story is well written and intriguing, making me want more of Paddy's Peelers.
I want to give a shout out to Ms. Wynne for giving us detailed descriptions of the characters and the periodic and subtle reminders of certain attributes throughout the book. It makes connecting with the characters so much easier, keeps the momentum of the story going, and makes the reading experience much more enjoyable. YAY!
I loved this story. It clicked on every level and was a great romance.
Easy, easy five stars.
*Although this is part of a series, it can easily be read as a stand-alone novel
I really enjoy historical romance and the added element of investigating mysteries takes it to another level. I am perfectly willing to believe that Lady Matilda and Harry fell in love at first sight, even if they were at a masquerade and can’t even see each other fully. The way that the whole thing is written just works. It seems totally opposites attract at first but as they grow to know each other they find more and more in common. Aubrey Wynne does a fantastic job of making this time of societal change come to life around these characters. There are lots of great characters besides the main couple. I especially enjoyed Paddy and Maggie O’Brian and would love a prequel book about them. Can’t wait to delve into more of this series.

I enjoyed this book. I plan to continue to read the series. A decent plot, some good characters nd an intriguing concept of a family made up of rescued wits who each have a special talent, such s doctor, lawyer, cop, actress, disguise guru, etc. It’s quite clean with only a few kisses here and there. A couple of minor irritants though-the occasional modern phrase/word would show up. I grew tired of the constant ‘dem’, da’, ‘t’hings’, ‘dey’, etc. which was inconsistent with other words like ‘beating’, ‘holding’ which they would pronounce fully instead of saying ‘beatin’ ‘holdin’ which is more likely. Anyway those are small things.
Great book by Aubrey Wynne. Very shy Lady Matilda unknowingly gets Harry, an investigator working for her brother, to help her with her shyness problem and then their secret meetings start. Even though she is always accompanied by her maid, when her brother finds out, their meetings end by mutual agreement as he is not titled. As danger enters the picture, things get exciting for all of them. Interesting beginning to a new series.
I throughly enjoyed the story even though I confused the two of the characters in the plot with each other. I liked to two main characters and the story woven around them. I also enjoyed the back stories of each character
Wow! There is a lot going on in this story! Patrick O’Brien had been a constable in Dublin where trouble was brewing, the department was disorganized and the pay was poor. When his wife Maggie’s English half-brother told them about the Bow Street Runners, the couple relocated to London so that Patrick (Paddy) could join them. One day Paddy came across an eight year old boy who was being viciously attacked. He disbursed the gang and brought the sick and beaten child home with him. Together, he and Maggie restored the child’s health, declared him family, and educated him. Over the years, Paddy and Maggie adopted five more boys and one infant girl. They were all encouraged, educated and loved. Now each one of them worked in some capacity for the family’s investigative business. Twenty-nine year old Harry was currently on a job for the Earl of Darby that involved trailing the Duke of Colvin. It just so happened that the Home Office was also interested in the Duke’s activities regarding another matter, and enlisted Harry’s services. Meanwhile, the Earl of Darby’s younger sister, Lady Matilda (Mattie), was nineteen, very shy and dreading the upcoming season. One day while Mattie was at the park sketching the swans, a young child broke away from his mother and was quickly heading to see the cygnets. The adult swans, intent on protecting their young, prepared to do the child considerable damage. However, just as the boy was about to be attacked, a man came running in, grabbed him and shielded him with his body. After the mother retrieved her son, the swans turned on the rescuer and Harry soon found himself in the pond. Mattie grabbed her parasol and used it to fend off the angry birds, allowing him to drag himself free of the water. Harry sat in the sun to dry off, and he and Mattie spent the whole afternoon talking. At one point she realized that conversing with him came naturally and she did not falter or stutter even once. Reluctant to let him go, Mattie made arrangements to see him again under the guise of needing him to help her practice talking to men for her upcoming season. Now you have the daughter of an earl smitten with an investigstor who spent the first eight years of his life in an orphanage and brothel. As the attraction between Mattie and Harry heats up, so does the investigation. This story is full of action, danger and surprises. There are emotional highs and lows, new found friendships, disguise opportunities, heroic feats and multiple family gatherings. We met Paddy’s Peelers in other stories, but I have been really looking forward to a series just focusing on Paddy and his family, and I must say, it was worth the wait. This is a well written, richly told tale created by a masterful storyteller who knows how to engage your emotions and hold your attention. I loved it and can’t wait to see what comes next!.

Dive into an intricate world of historical intrigue with Aubrey Wynne's ‘Crime, Courtship, & Conspiracy,' the first novel in the Paddy Peelers Mystery series.
Mr. Harry Walters is an orphan who was saved by Paddy O’Brien and his wife. They have taken in a variety of orphans and they are now a family, not connected by blood, but my choice. Harry works for Paddy O’Brien and his Peelers, taking assignments for the Home Office and members of the Ton.
Lady Matilda, affectionately known as Mattie, is a shy, bluestocking who struggles to converse with men, but her mother is pushing her to mingle in society and find a husband. Mattie and Harry meet serendipitously at a park when he is saving a child, and Mattie steps in to rescue him from the muted swans. Mattie is so at ease around Harry, he doesn’t overwhelm her like the egotistical men of the ton and a natural friendship begins. Harry is very attracted to Mattie, their differing social classes and his business with her brother complicate any romantic prospects. When Mattie requests Harry’s help to conquer her shyness around men, he hesitantly agrees, despite knowing he should refuse.
This story is brimming with action, drama, familial bonds, mystery, class differences, crime-solving, and intriguing plot twists that kept me glued to the pages. I adored Mattie's loving and supportive relationship with her brother, who desires nothing but her happiness. Harry and Mattie are characters you fall in love with and are rooting for them to find a way to be together. The supporting characters were fantastic and greatly enhanced the story, I especially enjoyed the friendship Mattie developed with Miss Pendleton and the inimitable Lady Roberta. A surprising ending ties everything up perfectly, leaving me smiling with joy.
I thoroughly enjoyed this crime-solving, romantic, mystery series debut and believe others will too. Aubrey Wynne masterfully balances history, mystery, crime-solving, compelling characters, and a charming romance.
I eagerly anticipate more thrilling adventures with Paddy’s Peelers as they tackle crimes in London, unravel political plots, bring criminals to justice, and perhaps discover love along the way. If you are looking for a fast-paced, engaging, crime solving mystery and a romance you won’t forget, I highly recommend you pick up this book.

Crimes, Conspiracies and Courtship is the first book of the historical romance series by Aubrey Wynne, Paddy's Peelers Mystery.
This is set in Regency era London, starting with patchwork family who all work in the family business, investigating crimes and the like, often alongside the Bow Street Runners. The family is headed by Paddy and his wife, and made up by the children that they adopted, after leaving Ireland for London. Paddy has been investigating crime his whole life and its a passion he has passed onto his adopted sons and daughter. They get their work amongst the aristocracy, and even from the Crown.
It's a really quaint set up.
In this first book we meet the first of Paddy's adopted sons, Mr Harry Walters. Harry has a couple investigations going on, and they both point towards the same villain with some nefarious plans for treason. His suspect also happens to be a significant member of the aristocracy. During the investigation, with a little luck, Harry meets Lady Matilda. And they keep on bumping into each other.
It is clear they have some great chemistry. They work well off of each other, and it was easy to love both Harry and Matilda. However, they come from very different stations. Matilda is the daughter of a titled gentleman, while Harry has no title, only his career as an investigator. It felt nice to read them getting to know each other, but it was also heart warming seeing how these two could make a life together without causing major scandal.

"Crimes, Conspiracies, and Courtship" by Aubrey Wynne is a delightful and enchanting sweet romance that captures the essence of love intertwined with mystery. From the very first page, Wynne draws you into a world of charming characters and a captivating storyline that keeps you hooked until the very end.
The novel beautifully balances elements of romance and suspense, making it an absolute page-turner. The chemistry between the protagonists is palpable and heartwarming, crafting a love story that feels genuine and heartfelt. The author’s skillful storytelling brings each character to life, making you deeply invested in their journeys and personal growth.
Wynne’s prose is lyrical and engaging, painting vivid pictures of the setting and making you feel as if you are right there, walking alongside the characters. The plot is well-paced, with just the right amount of twists and turns to keep you guessing while allowing the romance to bloom naturally.
I especially appreciated the depth and development of the characters, each having their own unique traits and backstories that add richness to the narrative. This book is a perfect blend of romance, drama, and intrigue, making it a must-read for anyone who loves a good sweet romance with a dash of mystery.
Overall, "Crimes, Conspiracies, and Courtship" is an absolute gem that leaves you with a warm heart and a satisfied smile. Aubrey Wynne has crafted a beautiful tale that is sure to be cherished by romance enthusiasts everywhere. Highly recommended!
Lady Matilda is known as Mattie to her family and friends. She would rather enjoy reading a book than meeting with people.
Mr. Harry Walters is an orphaned who was saved from the streets by Paddy O’Brien. He is an investigator working in the family’s business.
Mattie and Harry meet by accident at a park while he is saving a child and Mattie ends up helping save Harry from the muted swans. Once Harry realizes Mattie is the sister of his client he tries to distance himself from her. Mattie wants him to help her in overcoming her shyness with men and he can’t say no to her. Will Harry solve the crime and find a way to be with Mattie?
I absolutely loved this book!! There was just the right mixture of mystery, crime solving and romance in the book. Mattie and Harry were both very likable characters. Their love story was oh so sweet, delightful and entertaining. The secondary characters were absolutely wonderful and really added to the story. The book flowed beautifully between the crime solving parts and the romance with Mattie and Harry. If you enjoy class difference romance along with crime solving mystery in your books this one is for you. I highly recommend this book and look forward to the next book!!
Since Patrick O’Brien, formerly of the Irish Constabulary, and his wife Maggie moved to London, they have taken in and raised six boys and one girl from the streets of Seven Dials. After working for Bow Street, Paddy started an investigative service. Each of the children grew and were educated in his or her particular skill or interest, and they all became part of Paddy’s Peelers.
Harry Walters was the first of the O’Brien brood. He is a top-notch investigator. Lady Matilda Bancroft is the sister of Harry’s current client. Mattie is extremely shy and awkward around men. When she meets Harry, she finds him easy to talk to. They spend time together so that she can practice talking to gentlemen. Soon they start to care for each other. Is there a way for the sister of an earl and an orphan from the streets to find happily ever after? Likely, if they are patient. The investigation intensifies as the Peelers, Bow Street, and the Home Office work together to put the Vicar out of business. Mystery, intrigue, suspense, and danger make this a page-turner. There is also a great introduction to the O’Brien family, their loyalty and family support and love. I received an ARC of this book via BookSprout and voluntarily reviewed it.
A historical romance with intrigue, suspense, drama, mystery, and interesting characters always catches my attention. I liked Lady Matilda's disposition and how she navigated through the epoch’s conventions, while Harry's character came from a working-class background and was upright, loyal to his family, protective, and had worked hard to get where he was. The story kept me intrigued by the class differences and Harry's struggle with himself because Lady Matilda was determined to achieve what she longed for. The investigation and how it unfolded were interesting. I found it quick to read, and I enjoyed the romance between Lady Matilda and Harry. This is the first story about the Peelers by Paddy O'Brien, and it left me interested in reading the next ones. I voluntarily reviewed this copy I received from Hidden Gems.
I've never been a fan of historical romance. But this author does it in such a way that you just can't put it down. I accepted the first book by mistake and was hooked. This is my 4th. Mattie was really shy when it came to talking to men outside her brother or his friends. Well at the park sketching she noticed a little boy heading towards the pond where the swans were and she was going to intervene but a man beat her to it. After saving those little boy the man ended up getting attacked by a swan and fell in the water. She assisted him and protected him from getting further attack and tended his wound. Harry you know who Matilda was because he worked for her brother. He knew he shouldn't keep her acquaintance but had a hard time turning her down. I absolutely loved how their relationship grew.

What will happen when an adopted orphan, Harry Walters, now a detective for Paddy’s Peelers meets Lady Matilda Bancroft? Well, she will rescue him from an attack by mute swans. Wynne has done an excellent job of introducing us to the first of the O’Brien’s brood to enter into romance. Paddy and his wife Maggie raised seven children who suffered unfortunate circumstances and each uniquely tragic, 6 boys and 1 girl. All of whom are now flourishing under the O’Brien’s care. This series will cover each sibling bound by love, not blood, with a conspiracy against the Crown as a backdrop. It’s already an exciting beginning. Ready to start Book 2. A reread means a 5 star 🌟 review. I have received an ARC from Booksprout and I am leaving an unbiased review voluntarily.
What an interesting bit of non-fiction mixed with fiction this story is! I could totally understand where Mattie was coming from, being a rather shy bird myself when I was younger. Harry seemed to be quite the hero and I adored the scene with the swans. I did find the story lacked some of the intensity I thought the plot was calling for, especially the ‘climax’, which wasn’t much of one. But the chemistry and longing between the two was adorable and I so love a boisterous family , such as the O’Briens! A good story.

This is the story of Harry Walters & Matilda Bancroft. Harry was an orphan from the Rookeries who was found as a young lad and taken in and adopted by Paddy O’Brien and his wife Margaret. He now works as a detective in Paddy ‘s Peelers, the investigative agency started by Paddy, and his current case is for the Earl of Darby.
Matilda Bancroft is the sister of the Earl of Darby. She meets Harry when she wields her parasol to fend off swans after Harry saves a toddler who was headed for the water. She’s always been shy when talking to men, but finds it easy to talk to Harry. Socially they are very different classes, but their story starts here…..
This is the first book in the new Paddy’s Peelers series set in Regency London. Paddy’s wife Margaret is not able to have children herself, so they end up giving a home to six boys and a girl who grow up working in the ‘family business’. The series continues with the stories of the other family members, which I look forward to reading.
Aubrey Wynne has written an excellent story with some great characters and I really enjoyed this book. She has the history side well researched too, so it’s nice to have a mix of fiction together with some historical people, places and events. We first met the Earl of Darby in a separate book as part of the Wicked Earls series by various authors, so check that out too for another good read.

I really enjoyed Crimes, Conspiracies, and Courtship. I appreciated the note the author put at the beginning explaining the origins of the term "peelers" and how it relates to the story. And speaking of stories, this one was great. It was a wonderful blend of romance, action, and mystery. I loved the characters, both Harry and Mattie, and the rest of the O'Brien family. The book was engrossing, and I look forward to reading future books in the series and getting to know the rest of the Peelers better. If you enjoy historical stories with mystery and romance, I definitely recommend this book.
I received a review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This is the first book I've read from this author, which just happened to be the first in a series. I had been wanting to revisit historical romance for a while and this came at the perfect time. I found the romance and relationship between Harry and Mattie wonderful! It was nicely paced and acknowledged the differences in their stations and I really liked how the romance played out. The suspense portion of the story confused me somewhat, although perhaps I was just more invested in the romance.
Overall, this is an entertaining and enjoyable read and I would very happily read more from this author in the future.
Regency Romance with Mystery Harry, an orphan raised by a kind couple, grows up to become an investigator and a member of Paddy’s Peelers. Lady Matilda, an earl’s sister and a reluctant debutante, dreads the pressures of Society. Fate throws them together, and soon, their hearts are at risk—especially since a match between them defies convention. This story blends romance, action, and intrigue in a compelling way. I enjoyed watching Harry and Mattie navigate their differences in status and the dangers surrounding them. A lovely read for fans of Regency romance with a touch of mystery and a cross-class love story at its heart.
A very enjoyable story to read with a perfect blend of mystery, action and romance. The dialogue is engaging with descriptive prose which brings you into an immersive experience. The main characters, Mattie and Harry are perfection and all the supporting characters are so wonderful. Mattie and Harry are from different worlds but they have an instant connection and their love builds into something substantial and everlasting. I love the strong family connection and sense for justice. This is the first book in the series and I eagerly await more of Paddy's Peelers.
Lady Matilda is weary of meeting people. When she talks to a gentleman she gets tongue tied. Until she meets Harry, a detective. She talks him into meeting with her to help her with her affliction. Though they start to care for one another, nothing can come of it. He was born an orphan and currently her brother is a client. This was a wonderful story filled with mystery, romance, family, and justice.
